Trans-Tasman Trophy - 1st Test

Australia v New Zealand

Australia won by 149 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Righto, now to the business end of this game. The players are out. Thanks for the mails. Sit back and enjoy. The sun's out. Chris Martin has the new ball. Mark Taylor reckons Matt hayden will come out and bang it around. One again it's a very good morning to you all. Some of you might be at work following this. Some might pretend to be working! Three slips in place and a gully. Hayden walks down the pitch and has a word with Billy Doctrove. Sightscreen issues. Shouldn't this have been sorted out earlier? The third umpire walks out.

10.20: We're 10 minutes away from the start. Here's a selection of your mails.

Justin is in shock: "I can't believe Krejza has been dropped. Australia continue to search for a good spin option so they drop a guy who took 12 on debut?! Warney took plenty at the Gabba. They seem to have a side heavy on batting."

Chester agrees: "Warne always said that if it seamed then it would spin. They should have given Kreja a chance to see how he would go on Aussie decks. Offspinners traditionally struggle here so to give him both New Zealand matches would have given the selectors a good idea as to whether he should be playing in the South African series."

James responds to Justin's remark: "Taking 12 wickets on a spinning pitch in India on debut is very different to the Gabba today. NZ have had time to study the tapes of Krejza, and would be ready for him. If Australia played him and he got spanked we'd be back to square one. Better to wait for a deck with some assistance (Melbourne, Sydney) or some bounce (Perth) to assist his off-spin, and therefore his confidence."

Mark from New Zealand isn't happy with the squad: "How can the selectors pick Elliot and leave out Mills? Elliot's not done anything to warrant selection, Mills could bat at 8 with Vettori at 7."

Mick can barely recognise the visitors: "Never heard of half of the Kiwi team, did they just pluck them out of the crowd?"

Toss (10.05): New Zealand have won the toss and will bowl first. Play will get underway at 10.30. For those who've just joined us, wet conditions at the Gabba have delayed the start of play.

Here's are the line-ups: Australia: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Shane Watson, 8 Brad Haddin (wk), 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Stuart Clark.

New Zealand 1 Aaron Redmond, 2 Jamie How, 3 Jesse Ryder, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (wk), 6 Daniel Flynn, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Tim Southee, 10 Iain O'Brien, 11 Chris Martin.

Kyle Mills misses out and that's interesting. Tim Southee takes his spot. The good news for NZ supporters is that McCullum is fit. Australia have welcomed back Andrew Symonds though his form in the Sheffield Shield (70 runs in 3 games) was hardly sensational.

10.00 The toss is expected in five minutes.

9.45: The teams aren't official yet but Michael Clarke said on television that Shane Watson will play, Krejza will be 12th man. "We thought that the extra fast bowler would play a big part on this wicket," Clarke said. A no-brainer really for Australia. Krejza was always the second choice in the build-up to this game.

Speaking of Krejza, Stuart Capel, one of our readers, makes this observation: "Jason Krezja becomes the first player in Test history to be dropped after taking eight wickets in an innings on debut." Blame it on the Gabba grass.

9.30: Oopsy, looks like we spoke too soon. The captains should have been flicking the coin at the moment but it looks like we will have a delay. I've been reliably informed that the ground is still wet and the groundstaff are using leaf blowers to dry the area directly beside the pitch. There has been some damage to the roof at the Gabba due to the storms.

We understand the umpires will have an inspection at 10 AM and take a call.

The good news is that the outfield is fine. However, the umpires are just concerned about the short-leg type area for the close-in fieldsmen. Rudi Koertzen is optimistic of starting at 10.30 or 10.45. That's a delay of upto 45 minutes.

Here's what Stuart Clark had to say on TV about the 'green' Gabba strip: "It's the first time I've seen grass in about seven weeks. It looks like a good cricket wicket - a bit for everyone."

It looks like England may not see too much grass in India either. Some of those surfaces can be unforgiving for a bowler. The opening games in the Sheffield Shield saw some really low scores here at the Gabba, with the bowlers getting plenty of lateral movement. The players reckon it will be the same for this Test as well.

9.15: Good morning and welcome to the Gabba for the first Test between Australia and New Zealand. I'm Kanishkaa Balachandran and you'll have my company for the rest of this Test. Raghav takes over the scoring so it's a very good morning to him as well.

9.20: We have some good news to begin with. It's bright and sunny at the Gabba so it looks like play will get underway on time. There were worries about the rain so put your umbrellas away for the moment and enjoy the start of the international home season. Getting up early to watch the start of the Brisbane Test is a tradition for some cricket tragis like us so there's something extra special about this game. We'll bring you news of the toss and teams very shortly.

So that's lunch. Remember we lost half an hour this morning due to wet conditions. Hussey and Clarke have pulled things back for Australia with a steady stand of 37. But the session overall is New Zealand's and Southee's in particular. He teased the openers outside the off stump and sent back Ponting with a brute of a delivery. Martin strangely has been ineffective and the swing deserted him this morning. Eamon, from Australia, couldn't resist this quip: "Is Chris Martin taking time off touring with Cold Play?"

Hussey and Clarke have been impressive in their running between the wickets. There were a few close shaves though, edges falling in to gaps and not carrying. Do join us at 12.40 local time for session two.

45.1

O'Brien to Symonds, no run, bangs in the bouncer and that sails over Symonds' arched back

45.2

O'Brien to Symonds, no run, Was that dropped? Can't tell for sure, Symonds clubs a short ball and the ball goes straight to Redmond at short midwicket

45.3

O'Brien to Symonds, 7 runs, Now Symonds clubs another short ball from outside off, the ball just falls short of the rope at deep midwicket and they run four, worse for N there are four overthrows as well as the ball beats the keeper. Due to scoring issues the ball is being scored as 7 runs for the moment. It's complicated and I really can't explain why

45.4

O'Brien to Symonds, 1 run

45.5

O'Brien to Symonds, OUT, what a dramatic over! O'Brien pitches it just a shade outside off and gets Symonds to poke at it, the edge is taken and O'Brien is really pumped up in his celebration

A Symonds c †McCullum b O'Brien 26 (54m 33b 3x4 0x6) SR: 78.78

There's a lot of confusion about the 46th over. The scoring software doesn't have a provision for 8 runs so it was scored as 7 runs for one ball and 1 off the next. Symonds was indeed on strike for all three balls.

45.6

O'Brien to Watson, no run, wide outside off and lets it go

49.1

O'Brien to Watson, OUT, O'Brien's on a roll! He pitches it on a good length outside off and tempts Watson to cut, he doesn't move his feet and lazily wafts at it, McCullum takes the edge low to his right, Watson had himself to blame for this

SR Watson c †McCullum b O'Brien 1 (11m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 12.50
