That's tea on the first day. Australia are really reeling here and it was a good decision by Vettori at the toss. The turning point this session was the dismissal of Hussey. He added 73 with Clarke but the remaining stands haven't yielded too many. O'Brien strengthened NZ's position with a double strike. Clarke holds the key. Join us shortly for the final session.

There's a lot of confusion about the 46th over. The scoring software doesn't have a provision for 8 runs so it was scored as 7 runs for one ball and 1 off the next. Symonds was indeed on strike for all three balls.

We're back for what will be an extended post-tea session

MJ Clarke b Ryder 98 (297m 217b 9x4 0x6) SR: 45.16

Very commendable performance by NZ. They had Australia on the mat early on at 3 for 23 and an early end to the innings seemed inevitable. Australia still haven't recovered from the India tour. Take Clarke's 98 out and the performance is forgettable. Clarke got the measure of the conditions and set an example.

Now New Zealand won't have it easy. Join us shortly for their innings.
