New Zealand tour of Australia, 2008/09 / Commentary

Trans-Tasman Trophy - 2nd Test

Australia v New Zealand

Australia won by an innings and 62 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

10.28 Hayden touches the Australian flag as he leads his team out to cheers from the crowd. Lee to bowl to Redmond. Three slips and a gully.

10.15: We're about 15 minutes from the start. Before I go on, let me congratulate Matthew Hayden for playing his 100th Test today. He's one Australia's late bloomers and really has stormed the cricket world in the last eight years. He was in and out of the side in the first half of his career and in that period competed with Matthew Elliot for one spot. It was only in 2000 when he made the opening slot his own. Read Nagraj Gollapudi's interview with him here.

MacGyver: "I think Ricky needs to work on his tossing as well as his batting. 0 from 5 now."

Toss: News just in. New Zealand have won the toss and not surprisingly, will bat.

Teams:
New Zealand 1 Aaron Redmond, 2 Jamie How, 3 Jesse Ryder, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Peter Fulton, 6 Daniel Flynn, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Tim Southee, 10 Iain O'Brien, 11 Chris Martin.

Australia 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Brett Lee, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Stuart Clark.

As you can see, both teams have made one change each. Shane Watson goes out and Nathan Hauritz, the offspinner, takes his place. That obviously means this pitch will aid the slower men a lot better. For New Zealand, Peter Fulton returns to the side after a long layoff to boost the batting and he takes Grant Elliott's place.

9.55 Good morning everybody and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second and final Test of the series between Australia and New Zealand. The action moves to the Adelaide Oval where New Zealand will fight to save this series. It's also a very good morning to Raghav, Peter English and Brydon Coverdale, who's found himself at the Oval.

We'll fill you in with news of the toss and teams very shortly.

Well it's quite refreshing to see the NZ batsmen dominate an entire session. They would ideally have settled for an unbroken opening stand, looking at the way the pitch has played. I suspect How will be kicking himself for throwing it away. Redmond's on fire and it took the one over from Hauritz to set him off. He and Ryder brought up the 50 stand in a flash and NZ will have to push the momentum in to the second session at least. The bowlers haven't had things easy so far.

Just a note before we take a break. We've experienced a lot of technical issues with the internet connection this morning so that will explain the occasional loss of commentary and flat descriptions in parts. It's being looked in to, I can assure you. Technology! Anyway we apologise for the frustrations. Any tech glitch can be very annoying for the commentator as well as the reader so I know how you feel. Fingers crossed.
