New Zealand tour of Australia, Only T20I: Australia v New Zealand at Sydney, Feb 15, 2009
15 February 2009 - night match (20-over match)

Shortly after Australia clinched a nine-wicket victory in a rain-affected women's Twenty20 international against New Zealand at the SCG, it is time to turn our attention to the mens' sides. After the five-match one-day series was series was drawn 2-2 - Australia retained the trophy courtesy their win last time - we move to the smash-bang format.

Word from the ground is that Australia have won the toss and will bat. Brad Haddin is the man in charge. For the hosts, Callum Ferguson, Peter Siddle and Moises Henriques are making their Twenty20 debuts. This is Henriques' first game for his country. New Zealand have handed Martin Guptill, Neil Broom, Grant Elliott and Ian Butler their Twenty20 debuts. Butler's last game for his country was in December 2004. Welcome back.

Here are the XIs: Australia: Brad Haddin (capt/wk), David Warner, David Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Moises Henriques, Adam Voges, James Hopes, Cameron White, Nathan Bracken, Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle.

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (wk), Martin Guptill, Peter Fulton, Neil Broom, Grant Elliott, James Franklin, Nathan McCullum, Ian Butler, Daniel Vettori (capt), Tim Southee, Iain O'Brien.

Daniel Vettori said New Zealand will approach this game as a trans-Tasman decider after ruing their bad luck in the washed-out match at the Gabba. Vettori's counterpart in the ODIs, Ricky Ponting, is not playing tonight but said this match would hold extra significance.

Australia have won both the Twenty20 internationals they have played against New Zealand.

Here come the players. Seems like a cracking atmosphere for a Sunday. Davir Warner and Haddin will open for Australia. James Franklin has the ball.

0.1

Franklin to Warner, 1 run, pitches it up first ball and Warner clips it just wide of square leg

0.2

Franklin to Haddin, no run, back of a length just outside off stump, Haddin stands and pokes at it but ends up pushing it back down the track to Franklin

0.3

Franklin to Haddin, 2 runs, uses his feet to Franklin this time, exposing the stumps, but the bowler drops it short and Haddin carves it behind point, Warner pushes him for the second and gets it

0.4

Franklin to Haddin, 1 run, pitches back of a length outside leg stump, tapped to midwicket

0.5

Franklin to Warner, no run, gets some room outside off stump, crashes it straight to cover

0.6

Franklin to Warner, 2 runs, drops this one short, but Warner gets over the bounce and gets the wrists into play, turning the ball from outside off stump into the gap at midwicket and calling hard

Thats a busy, productive over for Australia. No cracking shots but plenty of intent.

End of over 1 (6 runs) Australia 6/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • BJ Haddin 3 (3b)
    • JEC Franklin 1-0-6-0

1.3

This track looks good. There's some swing - just some - for the bowlers. The rain has held up so far. Cricinfo's own blogger Iain O'Brien comes into the attack now.

2.1

O'Brien to Warner, FOUR, starts off short outside leg stump and Warner flicks it past square leg

2.2

O'Brien to Warner, 1 run, short outside off stump this time and Warner gives it a hard crack off the back foot, but Broom dives across to his left in the covers and takes some pace of that monster hit

2.3

O'Brien to Haddin, FOUR, attempted yorker ends up a low full toss and Haddin just slaps that back past Warner and the stumps, off the middle of the bat, and stands and admires his shot

2.4

O'Brien to Haddin, 1 run, another good hit, this one off the front foot as O'Brien pitches on a length outside off stump, its hit in the air well wide of mid-off, who dives and cuts it off

2.5

O'Brien to Warner, FOUR, stand and deliver from Warner, collecting the ball on the half-volley and muscling it out of the screws, Haddin jump ups and allows the ball pass and mid-off has no chance

2.6

O'Brien to Warner, 1 run, short of a length and he hits it off the back foot into the covers

A bad over from O'Brien.

3.1

Southee to Warner, no run, swing and a miss, Warner flashing at the full and wide one

3.2

Southee to Warner, FOUR, wrong place to bowl, son, thats pitched up and hammered on the rise past mid-off again, the best way to punish the half-volley

3.3

Southee to Warner, 1 run, better delivery, pitching on middle and off and swinging back in, but Warner gets over it and punches it back past the stumps, calling for the single immediately

3.4

Southee to Haddin, OUT, taken this time, and what a ball to get a wicket! Southee sends down a full toss, Haddin walks into the shot and hits the ball back over the bowler, who cups it up in the air and then takes it on the second attempt, to his right .. Haddin can't believe he's bunted a full toss back to Southee

BJ Haddin c & b Southee 15 (15m 10b 2x4 0x6) SR: 150.00

4.2

O'Brien to Warner, no run, short and swinging away, Warner flashes and cannot connect

4.3

O'Brien to Warner, OUT, again back of a length outside off stump, and Warner can only thump it to mid-off's lap, its the captain himself who pouches it in his lap

DA Warner c Vettori b O'Brien 23 (19m 15b 4x4 0x6) SR: 153.33

That wasn't a wicket-taking delivery either. Warner hit it off the middle of the bat but straight to Vettori.

5.4

Southee to Hussey, 1 leg bye, big shout from Southee this time, pitching on a length just outside off stump and getting movement and bounce again, the ball clips David's pads as he shuffles and tries to turn the ball away, its hit marginally over the knee roll, Ferguson calls his partner across for the leg bye

5.5

Southee to Ferguson, FOUR, short and wide and Ferguson slaps that behind point for four

5.6

Southee to Ferguson, 1 run, hits a length and thats an ugly heave across the line to midwicket

The 50 is up for Australia ...

6.5

6.6

14.5

Elliott to Voges, OUT, gets across his stumps and tries to paddle an overpitched delivery, but doesn't manage to get bat on ball and so Elliott traps Voges in front of about leg stump

18.4

O'Brien to White, OUT, up, up, up ... and ... into orbit ... it going, going, and ... oh well held Vettori! Southee to Hopes, FOUR, good way to end the innings, Southee sends down a low full toss and Hopes connects well, swinging the ball over midwicket and the sweeper cannot get there in time

Handy cameo from Hopes. Australia have made 150 for 7. Haddin reckoned 160 was par. For New Zealand, Butler and Vettori were the pick of the bowlers. Don't stray far, we will be back for New Zealand's reply shortly.
