Pakistan in Australia Test Series - 1st Test

Australia v Pakistan

Australia won by 170 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

The track at the MCG is a drop-in and Ricky Ponting reckons it is "tacky". Simon Katich and Shane Watson are out in the middle. Around 25,000 in for the start of play, says Bill Lawry. Asif will start things off, here we go!

10.20am There's still ten minutes left for the start. Check out Brydon Coverdale's preview. Joining Cricinfo's crew Down Under for this series is our Pakistan editor Osman Samiuddin, who, like a lot of us, reckons this is Pakistan's best opportunity in years to fix their poor record against Australia. Watch out for those stats on Warne and McGrath. Our stats editor S Rajesh gives us the stats preview.

10.10am Check out the XIs - Australia 1 Shane Watson, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Doug Bollinger.

Pakistan 1 Salman Butt, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Faisal Iqbal, 4 Mohammad Yousuf (capt), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Mohammad Aamer, 9 Adbur Rauf, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

10.00am The news from the middle, Australia have won the toss and opted to bat. Ricky Ponting has recovered from his elbow injury and is playing. Pakistan are without the services of Umar Gul, and Danish Kaneria, who isn't fit. Saeed Ajmal's been picked, and so is Abdur Rauf, the fast bowler. We'll get you the XIs in a bit. Peter Siddle returns for Australia, replacing Clint McKay. No debut for Steven Smith at the MCG, he was brought in as cover for Nathan Hauritz, who is fit.

I'm Sid Talya and I'll be taking you through the first hour of each session today, and joining you later will be David Walsh, who's watching the proceedings from Sydney.

9.50am local time Merry Christmas and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan being played at the MCG. The Boxing Day fixture has always been a major draw in the Australian sporting calendar, and they'll be there in their thousands soaking up the riveting atmosphere. Pakistan are fresh from a 1-1 drawn series in New Zealand, and the two most encouraging features of their performance were the successful return of Mohammad Asif and the arrival of Umar Akmal. Australia were expected to steamroll West Indies but were seriously challenged in Adelaide and Perth; the last Test proving a ripper.
