Pakistan tour of Australia, 5th ODI: Australia v Pakistan at Perth, Jan 31, 2010
Australia won by 2 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)
31 January 2010 - day/night match (50-over match)

1230hrs All in readiness. Salman Butt to face Ryan Harris

1210hrs Pakistan have won the toss and will be batting first, but the big surprise is that the toss was won by Shahid Afridi, and not Mohammad Yousuf. Yousuf, the designated captain, pulled out with a troublesome knee, and Afridi will be leading Pakistan in an ODI for the second time. There are other big changes too: Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Yousuf are out; in come Sarfraz Ahmed (keeper), Shoaib Malik and Khalid Latif (opener). Malik will have to slot in for both Ajmal and Yousuf - as an offspinner and as a middle-order batsman.

Australia have made two changes too: Michael Clarke and Peter Siddle are both out with slightly sore backs, and their places are being taken by Adam Voges and Mitchell Johnson.

The closest match of the series has been the first, when Pakistan batted first, the only time they did so. So here's to a close game.

1155hrs Ever since their loss in the Sydney Test, Pakistan have been a demoralised unit just going through their motions most of the times. When in Australia, you don't want to go through your motions. It is hardly a surprise that at the very end of the tour, Pakistan are yet to win a thing here. Today, at the WACA, they strive to prevent a 5-0 whitewash, something that has happened to them only once previously. Unpredictable as Pakistan might be, one thing we and they can rest assured about: Australia won't give a quarter. Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the final ODI between Australia and Pakistan. I am Sidharth Monga, I will be calling the game, and Venkat Raghav will be scoring it for us.

0.1

Harris to Salman Butt, no run, starts off with a length ball angling across - the other night Harris got appreciable outswing

0.2

Harris to Salman Butt, no run, goes through with the angle again, Butt - as with the first delivery - leaves it alone

0.3

Harris to Salman Butt, no run, ad again, angling across him, pretty wide, and But shoulders arms again

0.4

Harris to Salman Butt, no run, one more delivery allowed to go through undisturbed to the keeper

0.5

Harris to Salman Butt, OUT, oh what a soft dismissal, four deliveries wide of him and left alone, Harris bowls in the same area again, and Butt chases it. No feet involved, just a tentative push away from the body, and the edge settles comfortably in Haddin's gloves

Salman Butt c †Haddin b Harris 0 (3m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Once again, out comes Younis Khan in the first over. Three slips in place

0.6

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, and Harris begins with a wicket-maiden again, just like two nights ago. He might want to dig this pitch up and take home. This one Younis leaves alone outside off

End of over 1 (wicket maiden) Pakistan 0/1 (RR: 0.00)

    • Younis Khan 0 (1b)
    • Khalid Latif 0 (0b)
    • RJ Harris 1-1-0-1

Khalid Latif, in his fifth ODI, will face Mitchell Johnson now

1.1

Johnson to Khalid Latif, no run, starts with a shot delivery, tucking Latif up, who goes back and across and defends

1.2

Johnson to Khalid Latif, no run, fuller, presents it the full face, not much intent to find gaps

1.3

Johnson to Khalid Latif, no run, stays in the crease and defends a length delivery

1.4

Johnson to Khalid Latif, no run, slightly back of a length, across him, played with an open face towards point

1.5

Johnson to Khalid Latif, OUT, and just like that, another one goes, stays back to a fullish delivery, plays in front of his body, and it goes in the air to the left of Johnson, whose left hand pushes Pakistan down to 2 for 0! It wasn't even a slower one - 146ks. If somebody's slower ball comes at 146ks, though, devil save us from the faster one. There was a puff of dust when the ball pitched, so it could just have stopped at Latif

Khalid Latif c & b Johnson 0 (8m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Shoaib malik, coming back into the side, in at 2 for 0

1.6

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, oh my word, that's the quicker one! back of a length, rising outside off, at 153.6ks, folks you have got to believe my eyes, Malik fends and is beaten

End of over 2 (wicket maiden) Pakistan 0/2 (RR: 0.00)

    • Shoaib Malik 0 (1b)
    • Younis Khan 0 (1b)
    • MG Johnson 1-1-0-1
    • RJ Harris 1-1-0-1
2.1

2.2

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, opens the face on it, can't get it past point

2.3

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, shorter outside off, left alone

2.4

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, nearly an lbw, stuck on the crease, the ball comes back in, the height - he is hit in the thigh - saves him

2.5

Harris to Younis Khan, 2 runs, finally Pakistan are away, Younis plays in front of his body, gets the inside half of his bat, and gets a couple through midwicket

2.6

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, sharper delivery, more effort, shorter, outside off, and left alone

End of over 3 (2 runs) Pakistan 2/2 (RR: 0.66)

    • Younis Khan 2 (7b)
    • Shoaib Malik 0 (1b)
    • RJ Harris 2-1-2-1
    • MG Johnson 1-1-0-1
3.1

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, full delivery, nicely punched down the ground, Johnson sticks his left hand out and fields

3.2

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, oh, stays low at 150ks, just outside off, and hits a crack and goes second bounce to Haddin

3.3

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, slower ball outside off, defended

3.4

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, more drama here, Ponting at point claims a catch, Malik reckons it's a bump ball. Third umpire's verdict awaited. Malik is safe, it is a fulltoss that he has driven straight into the ground, it was close so no harm in checking

3.5

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, shorter delivery, angling across Malik, and he lets this one be

3.6

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, Malik's off the mark too, opens the face late on it, and gets a single down to third man

End of over 4 (1 run) Pakistan 3/2 (RR: 0.75)

    • Shoaib Malik 1 (7b)
    • Younis Khan 2 (7b)
    • MG Johnson 2-1-1-1
    • RJ Harris 2-1-2-1

Gareth: "Where has Harris been? 150 kph, late swing, the ability to bat! I will never understand the Aussie Selectors. Next week they may give Mike Whitney a call up..." No swing so far today, though.

4.1

Harris to Shoaib Malik, no run, length delivery, just outside off, comes forward and defends

4.2

Harris to Shoaib Malik, no run, slightly shorter, keeps Malik on the crease, defended without trouble

4.3

Harris to Shoaib Malik, no run, short and wide, Malik sees a release shot, but goes too hard at it and is beaten

4.4

Harris to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, runs this one down to third man for a single

4.5

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, shout for lbw, but it's angling down the leg side, Younis falls over while looking to work it to leg and misses. Bowled from behind the crease, it seemed like - no replays so not sure

4.6

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, shorter, just outside off, and he shoulders arms

End of over 5 (1 run) Pakistan 4/2 (RR: 0.80)

    • Younis Khan 2 (9b)
    • Shoaib Malik 2 (11b)
    • RJ Harris 3-1-3-1
    • MG Johnson 2-1-1-1
5.1

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, stays back and defends a length delivery angled across him

5.2

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, gets the edge with a back of a length delivery, but it's too thick and the ball travels towards third man

Matt has more on Harris: "Harris is a much improved cricketer over the past 2-3 years, I dare say if it weren't for injuries he's only recently come back from, he'd have been called up before McKay, Bollinger and perhaps even Siddle. Good to se him making the most of his opportunities."

5.3

Johnson to Younis Khan, no run, slower ball, Younis stays back and defends

5.4

Johnson to Younis Khan, no run, short, rising high towards the chest, Younis jumps, rides the bounce, and keeps the defensive shot down

two slips and a short gully for the short delivery

5.5

Johnson to Younis Khan, no run, this time he doesn't fend, he stays inside the line and lets it go through to Haddin

5.6

Johnson to Younis Khan, no run, fuller this time, but not driveable, Younis goes back and across and defends

End of over 6 (1 run) Pakistan 5/2 (RR: 0.83)

    • Younis Khan 2 (13b)
    • Shoaib Malik 3 (13b)
    • MG Johnson 3-1-2-1
    • RJ Harris 3-1-3-1
6.1

Harris to Shoaib Malik, no run, length delivery just outside off, Malik covers the stumps and shoulders arms

6.2

Harris to Shoaib Malik, no run, slightly shorter, closer to off stump, Malik has to play at it, he pushes it towards cover

6.3

Harris to Shoaib Malik, 3 runs, overpitched, no swing, and angled into the pads, nicely clipped away through midwicket

6.4

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, short, angling in, Younis sways out, leaves the bat hanging - quite reminiscent of his dismissal in the third ODI, but the ball doesn't come in enough this time

6.5

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, driven, again early into the shot, the bat face turns towards leg, hence it goes in the air but bounces short of mid-off

6.6

Harris to Younis Khan, no run, comes forward and pushes this one to cover

End of over 7 (3 runs) Pakistan 8/2 (RR: 1.14)

    • Younis Khan 2 (16b)
    • Shoaib Malik 6 (16b)
    • RJ Harris 4-1-6-1
    • MG Johnson 3-1-2-1
7.1

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, 3 runs, looking for swing, there is none to be found, and overpitches on the leg stump, Malik clips it through midwicket, a shot that comes naturally to him

7.2

Johnson to Younis Khan, 1 run, short again, into the ribs, this time worked away safely towards square leg

Mark has a word of caution re Harris. He writes, "At first I was surprised with Harris' selection since he averaged more than 32 with the ball in ODI's (prior to his recent strong performances). But I'd like to see how he fairs against stronger teams before I judge his ability (but so far, his performances look promising)."

7.3

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, a word of caution for Malik too, he need to be quick and decisive with a Johnson bouncer, else he will keep pinging him in the helmet like he did just now. Bowled at 150ks, the bouncer rises towards the head, Malik is like a rabbit in the headlights, just turns his head away late, the ball hits the shoulder and then the helmet. No pain showed, though

7.4

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, Ponting follows that bouncer up with a diving save at backward point, good stuff by Australia all around

7.5

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run

7.6

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, lovely straight-drive, overpitched just outside off, and he just meets it with a straight bat, no big back lift, no big followthrough, just good connection with full face. The push-drive brings Pakistan's first boundary

End of over 8 (8 runs) Pakistan 16/2 (RR: 2.00)

    • Shoaib Malik 13 (21b 1x4)
    • Younis Khan 3 (17b)
    • MG Johnson 4-1-10-1
    • RJ Harris 4-1-6-1

Clint McKay replaces Ryan Harris

8.1

McKay to Younis Khan, no run, Younis drives again, and the bat turns in his hand early again, and instead of mid-off, the shot goes towards mid-on

8.2

McKay to Younis Khan, no run, gets a stride in this time, and defends towards cover - all those loose drives have been the ones that he has played in front of his body

8.3

McKay to Younis Khan, no run, half-volley outside off, hit powerfully, but straight to mid-off

8.4

McKay to Younis Khan, no run, angling in to Younis this time, he presses forward and defends it to leg

8.5

McKay to Younis Khan, OUT, another Aussie bowler gets a wicket in his first over - actually all three have struck with their fifth deliveries! And another soft dismissal here, this is a length delivery fairly wide of off, Younis gets half a move forward and pushes at it away from his body, the edge is snapped by Haddin

Younis Khan c †Haddin b McKay 3 (34m 22b 0x4 0x6) SR: 13.63

Umar Akmal faces yet another crisis. Two slips in place

8.6

McKay to Umar Akmal, no run, three bowlers tried so far, and all three have started with wicket-maidens! Akmal stays on the crease and defends this length delivery

End of over 9 (wicket maiden) Pakistan 16/3 (RR: 1.77)

    • Umar Akmal 0 (1b)
    • Shoaib Malik 13 (21b 1x4)
    • CJ McKay 1-1-0-1

9.1

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, no run, short, sharp, just outside off, gets on top of it and defends

9.2

Johnson to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, makes him jump around in the crease, and he has no clue when the ball bounced and took the leading edge and went over gully

9.3

Johnson to Umar Akmal, no run, another edge, and this one falls way short of White at second slip. Good sharp delivery, just outside off, has to play at it

9.4

Johnson to Umar Akmal, no run, beats him outside off, short of a length, close to off, makes him play, and then the angle beats him

9.5

Johnson to Umar Akmal, no run, fuller, wider, and left alone this time

9.6

Johnson to Umar Akmal, no run, sure signs of dual bounce, hits a crack at back of a length, and bounces another time before reaching Haddin

End of over 10 (1 run) Pakistan 17/3 (RR: 1.70)

    • Umar Akmal 0 (5b)
    • Shoaib Malik 14 (23b 1x4)
    • MG Johnson 5-1-11-1
    • CJ McKay 1-1-0-1

Bowling Powerplay taken

10.1

McKay to Shoaib Malik, no run, accurate, just around off, defended off the back foot

Akmal is wearing a rather horrible green shade of zinc on his lips. Doesn't look the kind of character you would want to run into in a sparsely populated subway

11.1

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, starts on target, just off and around, Umar defends off the back foot

11.2

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, length delivery, comes forward and defends this one back to the bowler

11.3

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, back of a length, outside off, gets the outside half of the bat, but is safe

here comes the fifth delivery of the new over - all three wickets have fallen to the fifth deliveries of new spells

11.5

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, not this time, he gets a big stride forward and defends towards cover

11.6

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, fuller, beats him outside off, Haddin doesn't collect it cleanly - Hopes may not have got a wicket, but all four bowlers have begun with maidens so far

12.3

McKay to Shoaib Malik, no run, looks to cut, but it is too full for the shot, gets a bottom edge but is safe

12.4

McKay to Shoaib Malik, no run, stays back and plays with a straight bat this time, back to the bowler

12.5

McKay to Shoaib Malik, no run, and again, back of a length, no room, and all he can do is defend

12.6

McKay to Shoaib Malik, no run, slashes outside off, misses it by light years, plays way outside its line - anyway, three maidens in a row for McKay, and three maidens in a row for Australia. One run has been scored in last five overs!

End of over 13 (maiden) Pakistan 17/3 (RR: 1.30)

    • Shoaib Malik 14 (35b 1x4)
    • Umar Akmal 0 (11b)
    • CJ McKay 3-3-0-1
    • JR Hopes 1-1-0-0

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, and another legcutter outside off, and once again he is stuck on the crease and pokes at it, and once again he misses the edge

13.6

Hopes to Umar Akmal, 4 byes, how did he miss that one? this is as close to off stump as you can get without actually hitting it, and Umar ends up playing inside the line of it, Haddin is blinded by the bat, and concedes four byes - don't forget Haddin is standing up to the stumps

End of over 14 (6 runs) Pakistan 23/3 (RR: 1.64)

    • Umar Akmal 2 (17b)
    • Shoaib Malik 14 (35b 1x4)

Haddin back up to the stumps for Akmal

15.3

Hopes to Umar Akmal, 1 run, and good running again, soft hands, and the ball has hardly even crossed the stumps at the non-striker's end by the time Akmal makes the single

Haddin stays up now, saw Malik move around a bit and hence...

15.4

Hopes to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, yes and no with this single to backward point, Umar is quick so Ponting has to go to the non-striker's end, but Malik has made it easily

15.5

Hopes to Umar Akmal, no run, hit back to the left of Hopes, but he fields well

17.1

Hauritz to Shoaib Malik, 1 run, and starts off with a fulltoss, which is worked away past midwicket for one

17.2

Hauritz to Umar Akmal, no run, some drift there as Akmal presses forward and defends this to cover

Sarfraz shares his name with a crazy fast bowler back from the seventies and still famous for wacky quotes. Almost a cult figure Big Sarf is. Our Sarfraz - the keeper - tried some crazies too, sweeping fast bowlers on a WACA pitch, and failed three times. Good for him that he is out, might have gone back with a broken jaw had he stayed for a long period

49.2

McKay to Iftikhar Anjum, OUT, Ponting picks this one late, and then virtually flies across to hold onto this one. McKay goes fast and follows a backing-away Rao, and gets out a limp shot, lobbed towards midwicket where Ponting does the rest

Iftikhar Anjum c Ponting b McKay 16 (10m 8b 2x4 1x6) SR: 200.00

1610hrs From 2 for 0, and 3 for 16, Pakistan have done well to reach 212, thanks again to Umar Akmal and Fawad Alam, and Shoaib Malik. Will this be enough to prevent a whitewash? Seems unlikely, but the pitch is cracking up, so can't completely count Pakistan out. Join us for the chase in half an hour.
