South Africa in Australia Test Series - 1st Test

Australia v South Africa

South Africa won by 6 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

11.28 am: Matthew Hayden has just thundered on to the field. He hasn't done much thundering with the bat of late, scoring only 32 runs in the series against New Zealand. His partner Simon Katich, however, scored a terrific hundred in the first Test against New Zealand at the Gabba. They were waiting to get on to the field before the South Africans came out of the dressing room.

Makhaya Ntini will open the bowling for South Africa from over the wicket. Three slips and a gully in place. Does the WACA have more pace and bounce than it did last year? I'll let you know soon!

I'm George Binoy, your commentator for this Test, and Srinivas Raju is on scoring duties.

Toss, 11.00 am: Ricky Ponting has won the toss and Australia will bat. The teams in a moment ... You can follow our commentary even if you aren't at a computer. Go to http://ci.plusmo.com on your mobile to get ball-by-ball updates on your phone.

Just the one forced change for South Africa. Prince is injured and Duminy replaces him. Prince was hit on the left thumb in the nets yesterday, it was the same spot that he was hit in the recent Test against Bangladesh. An x-ray revealed a crack in the thumb and the expected recovery time is ten days, which would mean he's an unlikely starter for the Boxing Day Test.

The fantasy game cut-off is in five minutes (11.15 am) so you'd better hurry if you want to make last-minute changes to your fantasy team.

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

No surprises in the Australian line-up.

Australia: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Brett Lee, 9 Jason Krejza, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Peter Siddle.

The umpires for the first Test are Aleem Dar and Asoka de Silva. The third umpire is former Australian medium-pacer Paul Reiffel.

10.55 am: South Africa's best-laid plans have taken a hit even before the start. Ashwell Prince got hit on his finger by Makhaya Ntini during a net session yesterday and has been ruled out of the Test. His bad luck hands JP Duminy his Test debut.

If you had Prince in your fantasy team, it might be a good time to take him out. Remember the cut off time is 15 minutes prior to the start of the game.

10.40 am: Good morning (even though it's a bit late in the day for that!) and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of South Africa's tour of Australia. The first ball is about 49 away and the toss is scheduled for 11.am. Brydon Coverdale, our reporter at the WACA, tells me its a perfectly sunny day in Perth, there are no clouds around but there's a cool sea breeze. Sounds a fine day for playing, or watching, cricket.

This is the big one. The champion v the challenger. Australia are ranked one in the world and wiped out New Zealand 2-0 at home recently (after losing in India). South Africa are No. 2 and they haven't been beaten in a Test series since 2006, and they brushed aside Bangladesh at home in the lead-up to this clash. Check out Brydon's preview for more details on the build-up.

0.1

Ntini to Hayden, no run, whoa that's a wayward start, Ntini pitched it well outside leg stump and Hayden let it go, not as spectacular as Harmison's wide but it was still pretty off line
