South Africa in Australia Test Series - 2nd Test

Australia v South Africa

South Africa won by 9 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

10.29 am: Right. moments away from the start of this high-stakes Test. South Africa have the chance to win their first ever series in Australia. The hosts will want to put the Perth game behind them and keep the series alive.

The umpires are Aleem Dar and Billy Doctrove. Hayden and Katich are out there in the middle. Dale Steyn has the new ball and will be bowling from over the wicket from the Members End. Three slips and a gulyl for him. "Ntini, Steyn and Morkel just had a group huddle, looks like they were trying to pump themselves up for a big new-ball session," says Brydon.

Remember if you aren't going to be at a computer all day, you can still follow our ball-by-ball coverage by keying in http://ci.plusmo.com on your mobile.

10.17 am: "We're just setting up for the national anthems now," says Brydon Coverdale from the MCG. "A little bit of added interest for the Australian anthem - it will be sung by Eddie Perfect, the star of Shane Warne - The Musical, which is currently playing in Melbourne."

I've got those talking Boonie and Beefy dolls from the 2006-07 Ashes on my desk and Boony is piping up. "Ho,ho ho, it's father Boonie," he chirps in Christmas spirit. "Boonie army, boonie army." He's as up for today's contest as a doll can be! If they made a South African doll, I wonder who it'd be. Andre Nel?

If you're the sort who likes cricket news to be delivered to you, it might be a good idea to check out the Cricinfo Daily.

10.15 am: Warney doing some commentary for Channel 9 this Test, he's out there for the pitch report. His comments on what Australia need to change in their bowling for this Test: "You've got to get a little bit fuller, especially here in Melbourne. You've got to get wickets with the new ball because it does get a little bit flat. Most of the time you've got to attack.

"Hauritz will do a good job with that holding role where you can rotate the fast bowlers at the other end. I like Krejza's line but he needs to learn a bit more about the defensive side of his game."

Toss, 10.00 am: Ricky Ponting's won it and Australia will bat. Ponting thinks there's a bit of moisture in the pitch. Graeme Smith: "We would have batted too. It's an interesting wicket."

So Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich will head out to the middle in about 30 minutes. To say Hayden is under a bit of pressure would be understating it. He's said he would consider his future at the end of the series.

You've got about five minutes to make changes to your Fantasy teams (if you haven't already!). If you're wondering whether to sub out Hayden, you might want to read this first.

"Matthew Hayden has had a horror run in the last couple of months, scoring 282 runs in his last 13 innings, but the MCG has been his most prolific venue: in nine Tests he has scored 1072 runs at an outstanding average of 76.57," writes S Rajesh. "In his five most recent Tests here, his record is even more scary - his scores read 136, 53*, 9, 56*, 65, 137, 153, 124, and 47, giving him an aggregate of 780 and an average of 111.42."

9.45 am: Good morning! Seasons greetings from all of us at Cricinfo. Welcome to our coverage of the first day of a massive Boxing Day Test between Australia and South Africa. I'm George Binoy, and I'll be bringing you the action as it plays out ball-by-ball. Srinivas Raju is the scorer for the Test. I hope you had an extremely merry Christmas and aren't too tired/hung over for some cricket. They're expecting over 70,000 at the MCG today so the atmosphere will be terrific. If you are in the vicinity, you should definitely think about adding to the crowd.

There are a few clouds around but a good warm day in Melbourne, the forecast 27 degrees.

Both teams had named their XIs on Christmas Day. Australia made only one change, replacing the offspinner Jason Krejza with Nathan Hauritz. Peter Siddle retained his spot ahead of Ben Hilfenhaus. There was some concern over Andrew Symonds' knee but it evidently wasn't serious enough to warrant a replacement.

Australia: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Brett Lee, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Nathan Hauritz, 11 Peter Siddle.

South Africa haven't made any changes to the team that pulled off the run-chase in Perth. Why would they?

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.
