South Africa in Australia ODI Series - 1st ODI

Australia v South Africa

South Africa won by 3 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)

2.14 pm: Minutes away from the first ball of the series opener. It is Michael Hussey who is opening with Marsh. Dale Steyn is opening the bowling, right arm over with two slips.

Email time, 1.58 pm: What's the weather like? And the crowd? asks Johan via email. "A cool day, though the sky is clear and there's only a little bit of cloud around," says Brydon Coverdale from the MCG. "Not much of a crowd in yet, but it is 2.00 pm on a Friday afternoon so more will filter in as people finish work."

OiOiOiDave wants to know if Michael Clarke opening? Brydon tells me that Michael Hussey is listed to open alongside Marsh ... a bit of a surprise that. "I think that Brad Haddin should open, he doesnt seem to get many chances to bat in the one-dayers," says Betta.

"Do Australia honestly think they could get 10 useful overs out of Cameron White and David Hussey as opposed to Nathan Hauritz? They should get Haddin to open, Clarke at 6 and Hauritz at 8 to bowl useful overs," says alex, who I think has a point.

"Let's hope South Africa's batting can perform without totally relying on Duminy. Personally I would love to see a bit of big hitting from Kallis," says Jonte. What a find Duminy is though. That catch he took (before he dropped one) in the second Twenty20 was mind-blowing.

Toss, 1.45 pm: Ricky Ponting has won it and Australia are going to bat. They've left out Nathan Hauritz for today's game.

Australia: 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Michael Clarke, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 James Hopes, 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Shaun Tait.

It's not yet certain who will open with Shaun Marsh. Here's a rather odd stat: Australia have never beaten South Africa in an ODI at the MCG. The teams have met at the venue five times for, believe it or not, five South African victories.

The game starts in about 30 minutes. Try our Quiz in the mean time.

1.38 pm: Good afternoon folks and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first of five one-dayers between Australia and South Africa. Today's series opener is at the MCG and we've got news for you right away.

South Africa have announced their playing XI. AB de Villiers is still not right after getting hit on the hip by Shaun Tait in Sunday's Twenty20, so Neil McKenzie comes in for his first ODI in five years. de Villiers did cop a nasty blow ... And Wayne Parnell was unavailable after jarring his neck diving for that catch on Tuesday - the laser-pointer catch - although he may not have been in the starting XI here anyway. Vaughn van Jaarsveld is making his ODI debut.

South Africa 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Neil McKenzie, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Vaughn van Jaarsveld, 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Johan Botha (capt), 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Dale Steyn.

No news of Australia's XI yet, but the toss isn't too far away so we should know in a few minutes. By the way it's George Binoy at the keyboard ... South Africa's over-rate has been outstanding, they got in 18 overs before the first drinks break. Their fielding hasn't been so flash though. Duminy missed a run out against Ponting and van Jaarsveld dropped him at square leg. Ponting's also survived three close lbw shouts. He's looking in fine touch now though and, with Marsh, has taken Australia to a position of strength after the early loss of Michael Hussey.

"I've got an answer to the question asked back in over # 2 about two sets of brothers on opposing teams. There was a response that the last time was the Waugh and Flower brothers in 2001 - I have found (don't ask how) that on October 19 2008, that brothers Lamech Onyango and Nehemiah Odhiambo turned out for Kenya against Nial and Kevin O'Brien for Ireland. Hardly earth shattering teams, but it's an international ODI," says Dave.

I'll be back in 40 minutes for the chase. You could spend the break trying our quiz, or by checking out Cricinfo 3D.
