South Africa in Australia ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Australia v South Africa

South Africa won by 3 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the third ODI between Australia and South Africa. The series is tied 1-1 with three to play. Today's is a day-night clash at the SCG, always a great place for a cricket match. This match will put one team within a win of taking the trophy. Toot toot.

For Australia, Mitchell Johnson is back. Do you have him in your Fantasy League team?

The weather I'm told is rather good for cricket, with clear skies overhead and a nice sun beating down.

Ricky Ponting has got the toss right and has chosen to bat first. Johnson will have to wait until the second dig to get the cherry in his hand. Johan Botha admits he would have batted as well. South Africa have made no changes to their XI. Shaun Tait and Nathan Hauritz are back for Australia. Hauritz's last ODI was in 2003. Cameron White is out, meaning Brad Haddin will bat at No. 6.

Here are the teams:

Australia 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 David Warner, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Nathan Bracken, 11 Shaun Tait.

South Africa 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Neil McKenzie, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Johan Botha (capt), 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

"With White out, does that mean that he will be released for tomorrow's Final against the Blues?" asks Jason. Unlikely, because he's still in the squad for the fourth ODI on Monday.

It will be Jamie Alter and Sanjay Murari taking you through the game today.

Alex: "About time! Five real bowlers in an Australian lineup, as opposed to 3.5 and some part-timers."

Speaking of bowlers, here's Dale Steyn to Shaun Marsh, from over the stumps.

0.1

Steyn to Marsh, 1 leg bye, pitches outside leg stump, he's late on the shot, brushes the pad and they get a leg bye first ball up

0.2

Steyn to Warner, no run, pitches outside off stump and no shot offered

0.3

Steyn to Warner, no run, lands outside leg stump, swings in, he hops and tucks it fine

0.4

Steyn to Warner, 1 wide, swings and gets some good carry, except its pitched outside leg stump and gives Boucher some work to do behind the stumps, nevertheless Steyn will be excited

0.4

Steyn to Warner, no run, pitches fullish outside off stump and draws a loose shot

0.5

Steyn to Warner, no run, 138.4ks, back of a length and dabbed toward cover

0.6

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, thats a loose ball, pitched up wide and Warner gets a chance to free the arms, so he reaches out and sends that screaming past cover for boundary number one

End of over 1 (6 runs) Australia 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
DA Warner    4* (5b 1x4)      DW Steyn    1-0-5-0
SE Marsh    0* (1b)

Makhaya Ntini will take up the attack. Running in from around the stumps.

1.1

Ntini to Marsh, no run, beauty to start off with, pitches on a length and deviates past the bat as Marsh plays inside the line, neither front nor back

1.2

Ntini to Marsh, no run, just back of a length and Marsh hops across to defend it back

1.3

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, hops across tentatively again, defending high on the bat, ball rolls into the off side and Marsh is away, but its Warner who is struggling and needs a full stretch of a dive to get home, had a direct hit come in he was a goner

1.4

Ntini to Warner, no run, pitches full and swings in, Warner gets across and clips to midwicket

1.5

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, 142.3ks, hits a length, he gets across and knocks it for one

1.6

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, a loose shot, Marsh is looking to leave a wide delivery but doesn't manage to get the bat out the way in time and it slips the toe end and runs down to third man

End of over 2 (3 runs) Australia 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
SE Marsh    2* (5b)      M Ntini    1-0-3-0
DA Warner    5* (7b 1x4)      DW Steyn    1-0-5-0

2.2

Steyn to Marsh, no run, 142.3ks, pitches on a length and he again pats it back

2.3

Steyn to Marsh, no run, pitches wider, tempting the drive, but he resists watchfully

2.4

Steyn to Marsh, no run, pitches a foot outside off stump and straightens, Marsh comes forward gently and shoulders arms, a pretty confident leave that one

2.5

Steyn to Marsh, no run, comes forward and pushes a fuller one straight to cover

2.6

Steyn to Marsh, no run, 143ks, again angling across well and so Marsh leaves it be

End of over 3 (maiden) Australia 9/0 (RR: 3.00)
SE Marsh    2* (11b)      DW Steyn    2-1-5-0
DA Warner    5* (7b 1x4)      M Ntini    1-0-3-0

3.1

Ntini to Warner, 3 runs, pitches in the slot and this one is lofted over mid-on, two fielders give chase, de Villiers slides near the ropes and throws the ball past Botha behind him, so a free run

3.2

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, good ball, hitting short of a length to draw a tentative push and a thick outside edge that runs between the slips and gully and down to third man for one

3.3

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, slants back in off a length and Warner gets to the pitch firmly, pushing a single into the covers, that is some positive running

3.4

Ntini to Marsh, no run, similar delivery and Marsh pushes into the covers, much more gently

3.5

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, straighter delivery and he shuffles and dabs it toward midwicket

3.6

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, tip and run from Warner, getting across and tucking a good moving deliver to the on side and setting off, he's struggling but stretches out the bat to just beat the direct flick from the midwicket fielder

End of over 4 (7 runs) Australia 16/0 (RR: 4.00)
DA Warner    10* (10b 1x4)      M Ntini    2-0-10-0
SE Marsh    4* (14b)      DW Steyn    2-1-5-0

4.1

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, more aggression from Warner, who drags a length delivery from outside off stump along the ground just wide of midwicket, not a short delivery and thus a premeditated shot, though not middled by any measure

4.2

Steyn to Warner, no run, pitches on off stump and he gets in line to defend it back

4.3

Steyn to Warner, SIX, stunning shot! Steyn holds back the length marginally and Warner just pulls that over midwicket for six, that was smacked right off the middle of the bat, what batspeed

4.4

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, now he goes to the off side, reaching out and steering a full and wider delivery between the covers and point, its a long chase for Duminy and the ball just wins that race

4.5

Steyn to Warner, no run, well stopped Duminy, that had four written all over it! Warner again comes onto the front foot and pummels the ball hard but Duminy flings himself around and stops

4.6

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, slower ball outside off stump, too full and Warner again gives it a thump, but Duminy dives at cover and takes some pace off the ball, so just a single to Warner

End of over 5 (15 runs) Australia 31/0 (RR: 6.20)
DA Warner    25* (16b 3x4 1x6)      DW Steyn    3-1-20-0

5.1

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, good running, just tapped into the off side and they set off rapidly

Steyn changes the angle ...

5.2

Ntini to Marsh, 1 leg bye, nips back in off a short length, Marsh hops up and deflects to third man

5.3

Ntini to Warner, no run, pitches it up and Warner thumps it hard, but Duminy intercepts again

5.4

Ntini to Warner, no run, fractionally short of a length and Warner goes for a short-arm pull, but the ball is not on for that sort of shot and he ends up dragging it to midwicket

5.5

Ntini to Warner, 3 runs, pitches fuller and he swings the bat at it, just clubbing over Botha at mid-off, not timed from Warner but he does pick it over the infield, a few more to his name

5.6

Ntini to Marsh, no run, a touch shot, just whipping it from off stump, but to Amla at midwicket

Marsh seems more edgy, dabbing the ball away, while Warner is all 'see-ball-will-hit'.

End of over 6 (5 runs) Australia 36/0 (RR: 6.00)
SE Marsh    4* (16b)      M Ntini    3-0-14-0

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, short of a length, 139ks, he whips it away for a single past midwicket

6.3

6.4

Steyn to Marsh, no run, pitches just outside leg and straightens, hits the flap, can't be out

6.5

Steyn to Marsh, no run, pitches full and straighter, well on-driven but Albie dives across to stop

DA Warner    32* (22b 3x4 1x6)      M Ntini    3-0-14-0

7.1

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, pitches on a length and thats pushed into the off side for one

Botha puts in a short catching cover

7.3

First change, after eight overs. Kallis will replace Steyn. One slip in place.

8.1

Kallis to Warner, FOUR, what placement! Warner short-arm jabs a length delivery, not timed well but the ball just evades mid-on and races away to the boundary, what a guy, and the 50 is up too

8.2

Kallis to Warner, no run, 130ks, much fuller outside off and he pushes straight to cover

8.3

Kallis to Warner, 1 run, 113ks, slower delivery, turned from middle and off to midwicket

8.4

Kallis to Marsh, 1 run, ooh, turned off the pads just wide of mid-on, a loose shot that

8.5

SE Marsh    8* (23b)      JH Kallis    1-0-8-0
DA Warner    45* (31b 5x4 1x6)      M Ntini    4-0-22-0

9.1

Ntini to Marsh, no run, tries one of those cute dabbed singles, but mistimes it and slip fields

Marsh has been sluggish, but I guess it works when Warner's going berserk at the other end.

9.2

Ntini to Marsh, no run, pitches on a length and he pushes that one straight to the cover fielder

9.3

Ntini to Marsh, no run, a lovely delivery, 130ks but moving off the upright seam to bat the bat as a clueless Marsh pushes at it away from the body, that ball gently wobbled to Boucher

9.4

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, comes onto the front foot and pushes a single down to mid-on

Since he can't time them today, he's better off just getting Warner back on strike, like that.

9.5

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, a thick edge off Warner's bat this time, as he flashes it at one pitched up outside off stump, gets a single down to third man so its Marsh who's back on strike

9.6

Ntini to Marsh, no run, short of a length and Marsh looks awkward as he fends it to point

End of over 10 (2 runs) Australia 58/0 (RR: 5.80)
SE Marsh    9* (28b)      M Ntini    5-0-24-0
DA Warner    46* (32b 5x4 1x6)      JH Kallis    1-0-8-0

The second Powerplay has been taken by South Africa.

10.1

10.2

Kallis to Warner, 1 run, clubs a fuller delivery, Steyn runs to his left at mid-off and dives to save runs

10.3

Kallis to Marsh, no run, pitched up and that one is well on-driven, except it cant beat mid-on

10.4

Kallis to Marsh, FOUR, whats this? Marsh has pierced the off side, and with a rather lovely shot too, that one pitched marginally full outside off stump and Marsh struck it on the rise for four

10.5

Kallis to Marsh, 1 run, hits a length and now he rotates the strike with a dab to the off side

All slips have been replaced. Square leg has come to midwicket. Long-on has come in.

10.6

Kallis to Warner, 1 wide, thats a wide, sliding down the pads, no contact from Warner, Boucher takes

10.6

Kallis to Warner, 1 run, comes forward and drives on the rise to mid-off, where Steyn tumbles

End of over 11 (8 runs) Australia 66/0 (RR: 6.00)

SE Marsh    14* (31b 1x4)      M Ntini    5-0-24-0

Warner has pinched the strike so he gets a new over. He's on 48 from 35 balls. The crowd loves it.

11.1

Ntini to Warner, no run, pitches on a length, middle and off, Warner wants a run but his attempt to shuffle across the sticks and rotate a single doesn't work, the ball dribbles down the track

11.2

Ntini to Warner, 1 run, nips in off a length to tuck up Warner, who hops and deflects it fine for one

One slip back in place for Marsh. A deep cover-point drops back on the ropes.

11.3

Ntini to Marsh, no run, ah, another one beats Marsh, who continues to flirt outside off stump, that pitched on the seam and wobbled away from the bat as Marsh went fishing, well bowled

11.4

Ntini to Marsh, 1 run, gets some room and angles the bat on it, chopping just past gully

Right, Warner on 49 in front of his home crowd ...

11.5

Ntini to Warner, no run, well bowled, on the stumps, no room to work with, Warner gets behind the ball and shape to knock it to the on side but he mistimes it back to Ntini

11.6

Ntini to Warner, no run, now its a full toss, which Warner cannot put past a diving JP Duminy at cover, so he has to stay on 49, much to the SCG's displeasure, they are backing the local boy

End of over 12 (2 runs) Australia 68/0 (RR: 5.66)
DA Warner    49* (39b 5x4 1x6)      M Ntini    6-0-26-0

DA Warner    51* (42b 5x4 1x6)      JH Kallis    3-0-20-0
SE Marsh    17* (36b 1x4)      M Ntini    6-0-26-0

13.2

Morkel to Warner, no run, fuller, pitching outside leg stump and coming in, Warner pushes it back to Albie, cramped for room on the attempted on-drive past midwicket

14.3

Kallis to Warner, SIX, hah! Kallis drops in an attempted bouncer but Warner collects from off stump and swats it over the infield for a flat six, thats a tremendous shot, and what placement

14.4

14.5

Kallis to Warner, 1 run, hops back and knocks this one off the hips for an easy single

48.6

Ntini to Bracken, 1 run, ah, this one slides in and draws an inside edge back onto the flap as Bracken pushes tentatively at it, the ball then proceeds to deflect down toward gully

End of over 49 (6 runs) Australia 268/9 (RR: 5.46)

SW Tait run out 0 (7m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

So South Africa do well to dismiss Australia inside 50 overs. Still, a target of 270 is not easy under lights. There has been a good crowd in and they are looking at a competitive total. The spinners, especially Botha, bowled very well and tied down runs as well as taking wickets. Duminy did well under pressure. South Africa will back themselves to chase this.

We'll be back for the chase in roughly 35 minutes. You could spend the break checking got a special edition Australia-South Africa quiz, or subscribing to the Cricinfo Daily for all the latest news.
