South Africa in Australia ODI Series - 4th ODI

Australia v South Africa

South Africa won by 8 wickets (with 71 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the fourth ODI at Adelaide.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and there are no surprises, they will be batting. Cameron White comes back for Nathan Hauritz, and Ben Hilfenhaus replaces Nathan Bracken. For South Africa, the injured Mark Boucher is replaced by Morne Morkel. AB de Villiers will keep wickets.

Just to remind you, South Africa lead the five-match series 2-1. A win here will seal the deal for them.

Here come the teams. It looks to be pretty hot out there. The pitch looks a belter. A good crowd gathered. Dale Steyn will take up the attack. There are runs in this pitch. Shaun Marsh faces up. Two slips in place.

0.1

Steyn to Marsh, FOUR, starts off on the pads and that's a freebie for Marsh, who only has to get a little bit of bat on ball and its down to fine leg for four

0.2

Steyn to Marsh, no run, better ball, angling across Marsh off a full length and he leaves

Marsh has been in form. He's admitted he needs to convert fifties into hundreds.

0.3

Steyn to Marsh, no run, good shot, pitches on the stumps and Marsh on-drives rather sweetly, but Albie falls across at mid-on and intercepts the shot, well stopped there

0.4

Steyn to Marsh, 1 wide, 139ks, pitches and angles across and then bounces and deviates a lot and it takes a leaping effort from Boucher to stop it running away

0.4

Steyn to Marsh, 1 run, a push into the covers and some good running gets him one

Warner fill now face ...

0.5

Steyn to Warner, no run, good stuff, hitting a great length and seaming across to beat the bat

0.6

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, pitches full and Warner drives to extra cover to get off the mark

So that's the first over.

End of over 1 (7 runs) Australia 7/0 (RR: 7.00)
DA Warner    1* (2b)      DW Steyn    1-0-7-0
SE Marsh    5* (4b 1x4)

Makhaya Ntini comes on, from around the stumps. Still two slips for Warner.

1.1

Ntini to Warner, 1 wide, pitches full to invite the drive, Warner chases and gets beat on the shot

1.1

Ntini to Warner, 1 wide, another swing and miss, pitched up full and wide and Warner wafts

1.1

Ntini to Warner, no run, better stuff, just back of a length outside off and Warner has to defend

1.2

Ntini to Warner, no run, tucks him up with a short one, which Warner defends to midwicket

1.3

Ntini to Warner, no run, pitches it up outside off and he drives and misses as it swings away

1.4

Ntini to Warner, no run, again back of a length and Warner defends it to point

There is a solid buzz around the ground.

1.5

Ntini to Warner, OUT, chipped straight to mid-on! Ntini continues to mix up his deliveries well, slipping one in full and straighter and swinging it back into Warner, who goes for a flick but finds Morne Morkel stationed inside the circle, so that is an early breakthrough for Ntini in his first over

DA Warner c M Morkel b Ntini 1 (9m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28

Warner departs for 1. In comes Ponting. There is some swing out there for Ntini, who changes the angle.

1.6

Ntini to Ponting, no run, pitches full and wide and Ponting shoulders arms

End of over 2 (2 runs) Australia 9/1 (RR: 4.50)
RT Ponting    0* (1b)      M Ntini    1-0-2-1
SE Marsh    5* (4b 1x4)      DW Steyn    1-0-7-0

2.1

Steyn to Marsh, FOUR, full and straight and Marsh clips it off his pads square on the leg side

2.2

Steyn to Marsh, FOUR, awesome! Steyn now gives Marsh width on the off side and he punches a sweet drive past extra cover, no one could move as the ball screeched away

2.3

Steyn to Marsh, no run, back of a length and seaming across and he leaves it be

This is a batsman's deck, mind you. An a quick outfield.

2.4

Steyn to Marsh, no run, pitched up full, Marsh goes for an off-drive and inside-edges to leg

2.5

Steyn to Marsh, OUT, good catch! Steyn angles it full and wide across Marsh, who flings the bat at the width but ends up slashing it off the toe end of the bat over backward point, Morne Morkel runs in from third man and dives forward to hold an excellent take, his second in consecutive overs

SE Marsh c M Morkel b Steyn 13 (14m 9b 3x4 0x6) SR: 144.44

A bad shot from Marsh, throwing his bat at the ball. Good catch from Morne. In comes Mike Hussey.

2.6

Steyn to Ponting, no run, pitches full and wide and he shoulders arms again

South Africa have sent back the openers for cheap. What a start for them.

End of over 3 (8 runs) Australia 17/2 (RR: 5.66)

3.1

Ntini to MEK Hussey, 1 run, pitches full and Hussey dabs into the covers to get of the mark

3.2

Ntini to Ponting, FOUR, lovely shot from Ponting, just coming early onto the front foot and taking it on the half-volley, driving elegantly through the covers, he plays that shot really well

3.3

Ntini to Ponting, FOUR, rubbish ball, short and swinging way down the pads and Ponting clips it away past a tumbling de Villiers, who had no chance of getting to it

Plenty of swing for Ntini. He just needs to control it.

3.4

Ntini to Ponting, no run, beats him this time, holding back the length and Ponting has a waft outside off stump, feet not to the pitch, and the ball jags back

3.5

Ntini to Ponting, no run, better area to pitch it in, and the late movement back in moves the ball very close to the top of off stump as Ponting shoulders arms to it

3.6

Ntini to Ponting, 2 runs, drifts down and he clips it down to fine leg to end the over

End of over 4 (11 runs) Australia 28/2 (RR: 7.00)

5.1

Ntini to Ponting, no run, 141ks, pitched up outside off and he shoulders arms

5.2

Ntini to Ponting, 1 wide, again he gets too much swing and the ball drifts down the pads

Problem is, he bowls from so wide of the crease that the swing is hard to control.

5.2

Ntini to Ponting, no run, pitches on the stumps, pushed into the covers, where Gibbs dives

5.3

Ntini to Ponting, no run, goes for a big shot outside off but mistimes it, chopping to point

Steyn to Ponting, 2 runs, again too straight and Ponting flicks it out to Morne in the deep

6.2

Steyn to Ponting, no run, big shout for leg before, pitches fullish and seams back in to beat Ponting's bat as he pushes down the line, he didn't get a big stride forward and is hit just outside the off stump, and when I say just I mean just ... the umpire Ian Gould figured he had gotten safely across, but my that was close

Second slip moves out and comes to short cover. Looks like McKenzie.

7.5

Ntini to Ponting, FOUR, shorter and he gets back and carves it backward of point, well played

7.6

Ntini to Ponting, FOUR, bang, that's four! Dropped in short and in a flash he pulls it over midwicket

9.4

JA Morkel to Ponting, FOUR, lovely shot, just pushing the ball straight down the ground

RT Ponting    38* (34b 7x4)      M Morkel    1-0-3-0

Albie continues. His first over was a horror.

11.1

JA Morkel to MEK Hussey, no run, lovely drive there off the front foot, but well stopped at cover too

Fine leg comes up. A deep cover-point comes in.

11.2

JA Morkel to MEK Hussey, 1 leg bye, hits a middle-and-leg length to cramp Hussey, who deflects it to gully

11.3

JA Morkel to Ponting, no run, what are they doing out there? Albie serves it up full and gets some swing, Ponting drives away from the body off the front foot and gets an outside edge to de Villiers, but there is no confident appeal ... de Villiers collects and sort of says something very unconvincingly ... that was a clear edge .... I cannot believe that!

Quintin: "This match has South Africa written all over it. I said in the beginning SA will win the series 4-1. Why the Aussies brought Hilfenhaus back only they will know. He was too expensive in the last two games he played and they dont have the bowlers to defend a low total. There are better bowlers than Hilfenhaus. The Aussies need some batting in depth that is a problem and their bowlers aren't bowling good line and lengths. I personally don't know what the coaches and captain are thinking because these strategies haven't worked why keep to it."

But obviously the new players don't play too many good spinners in state cricket so they don't know how to work them around. South Africa bowl Australia out for 222 in 48 overs. Real bad from Australia, who failed to see out their alloted overs. South Africa need 223 to win the series. It was a disciplined effort from them. We will be back in a while for the second innings. You could spend the break checking out Cricinfo's Facebook page.

"The predominantly right handed Australian middle order (Hussey, Haddin, White and Hopes, with Clarke to return) are unlikely to get much respite from their difficulties with quality spin any time soon," says Stephen Rendall. "They have NZ in a five match series starting in February and, while Australia will find the going easier against NZ, they will have to find a way to deal with Vettori who bowls extremely well to right handed batsmen looking to work him around in the middle overs - look for lbw decisions with the arm ball sliding in and failing to turn."

End of over 48 (3 runs) Australia 222/10 (RR: 4.62)
     M Morkel    9-0-41-1
SW Tait    4* (6b)      DW Steyn    10-1-49-3
