Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka at Brisbane.

I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for this Test. Yes, the entire Test - it's a solo mission.

10:14 local, 00:14 GMT Right, time to start. The Australian openers are set. Vaas has the ball. Two slips and a gully, and a man in short on the leg

9:50 local, 23:50 GMT Word from the middle is that Sri Lanka have won the toss and they'll have a bowl. And they have left out Lasith Malinga.

Said Mahela Jayawardene from the middle: "We've got a few guys who can swing a bit. Give it another hour under the sun and hopefully it will dry up and take some spin on the first day. We felt this pitch may probably not be that quick. We thought the best options would be to play our three seamers who can swing the ball. We challenged ourselves and had some positives. We have to make sure we don't make those mistakes."

Ricky Ponting steps up: "It's not that disappointing I lost the toss. Once it quickens up, it can be harder on day two, so not that disappointed. All the guys who have come into the side have worked really hard for the opportunity. We will have no preconceived gameplans. It's just about being able to execute your own gameplan."

And on the surface, he says: "There's a bit of moisture on the top of it."

Here are the teams:

Australia: 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Phil Jaques, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Mike Hussey, 7 Adam Gilchrist, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Stuart Clark, 11 Stuart MacGill.

Sri Lanka: 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Marvan Atapattu, 3 Michael Vandort, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene, 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Farveez Maharoof, 10 Dilhara Fernando, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Cricinfo's Kumar Sangakkara has an injury update on himself. "The hamstring is getting better and the rehab has been going well. Hobart [the second Test] is looking pretty realistic right now, but I've got to get back to full fitness otherwise it's too much of a risk."

9:45 local, 23:45 GMT Play has only been delayed by 15 minutes, and things will begin at 10.15am local time. Glenn McGrath is now presenting Mitchell Johnson with his baggy green. Huge smiles for Johnson, with the rest of the team gathered round eagerly, too.

Johnson: "I spoke to Glenn yesterday on the phone, to receive it from him, it's a very proud moment. It would nice to get on there first and grab a few wickets."

McGrath: "I'm pretty excited about seeing Mitchell play here today."

9:33 local, 23:33 GMT A bit of bad news - there's been some overnight rain in Brisbane, the trusted Jenny Thompson informs me. The covers are coming off, although an on-time start is unlikely. There's still a good chance of play in the near future, and there's good drainage at the ground. The showers should clear and break up this morning, but there is rain following.

"The two umpires have met with the match referee and the toss should take place in about ten minutes," says Jenny. "It's very dry, the covers came off about ten minutes ago. The outfield will be slow, and a bit damp, so that will play on the captains' minds, whether to bat or bowl first."

Australia haven't played Test cricket now for some ten months, but you won't bet against them coming out hard. It's something of a new era for Australia, without Shane Warne, McGrath and Justin Langer. Phil Jaques has earned his spot alongside Matthew Hayden at the top, and it's a special day for left-arm pacer Johnson, who makes his Test debut at home. He's a strong chance for sharing the new ball with Brett Lee. After taking 40 wickets at an average of 24 runs in 25 one-day internationals, there's a lot of expectation from him.

Overcast skies in Brisbane, with showers forecast for the next three days, should suit the quicks. The bouncy Gabba surface will definitely assist legspinner Stuart MacGill.

The Gabba, as our budding statistician Mathew Varghese pointed out yesterday, is Australia's fortress. They boast an extraordinary record here, having not lost a Test since 1988.

Sri Lanka have the ever-reliable Muttiah Muralitharan, but they too will rely on their fast bowlers, led by the canny Chaminda Vaas and backed by Farveez Maharoof and Dilhara Fernando.

Unfortunately there is a major hitch with the absence of Kumar Sangakkara, who tore an hamstring during the tour match at Adelaide.

Sri Lanka have yet to win a Test in Australia after eight attempts. The last time they toured, in the winter of 2004, they lost in Darwin and drew in Cairns. In 18 Tests between these two sides, Sri Lanka have won just one match, at Kandy back in 1999. Since then, Australia have lost just two of 29 Test series.

Much of the focus of this first Test will be on Muralitharan's attempt to break Warne's world-record Test wicket tally. He's just nine short, and averages five wickets per Test against Australia.

Jenny's just passed on an interesting bit of news, which I'm just reading. Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar, the expected umpires for this Test, did not get their visas processed in time, so the ICC was forced to send an SOS to Rudi Koertzen and Tony Hill to make an emergency dash to Brisbane.

11:19 local, 01:19 GMT We're back! Play ball!

11:11 local, 01:11 GMT The covers are off and the Sri Lankans are practising fielding. No idea of re-start time yet. The ground's not very full.

10:51 local, 00:51 GMT The rains not let up, and the covers are still on. Yawn. This rain was expected over the first two days, but its depressing when it actually arrives. There's plenty of people disappointed at the ground and, judging by the emails coming in, there's plenty of you out there as well. Unfortunate scenes.

Chris, on email: "The best way to relieve Brisbane from drought is to put on a cricket match, it seems... "

A few of you have been sending in links for the local radar over Brisbane. Looks like there's going to be bursts of heavy rain, with some windows of opportunity for cricket.

Jeremy Hancock: "Today's my 25th b'day. After not watching an Australia Test since the Sydney Test last season, i took the day off work so i could sit and watch play with beers in hand to celebrate my b'day. I have been looking forward to it for the past two weeks. And now some rain has to spoil my party! I'm tempted to play the world cup final on dvd instead!"

Hang in there, Jeremy, the radar says intermittent bursts. There may be a clearing soon. One beer at a time.

10:31 local, 00:31 GMT Its not looking good, folks. The rain is getting heavier, heavy covers going on.

A good amount of emails coming in from you fans. Looks like it will be the waiting game at Brisbane.

The aptly titled 'Confused', on email: "Any thoughts on why Sri Lanka would not play Malinga on a damp Gabba? Given how well the place drains, and the firm base that's invariably there, surely a 150Km/h swing bowler would be ideal."

10:22 local, 00:22 GMT The rain is back, slight though it may be. Hayden and Koertzen share a word. Boos from the crowd as the rain gets steady and the umpires say lets all go back inside.

Here's Maharoof to share the ball with Vaas. Hayden to face.

1.1

Maharoof to Hayden, no run, back of a length outside off, he gets back and cracks it to cover

1.2

Maharoof to Hayden, 1 run, fuller in length, Hayden lunges forward and tries to work it to leg, falling over in his shot, and picks up runs as the ball screams past mid-off

1.3

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, back of a length, he gets up and then decides to let it pass safely

1.4

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, fuller length outside off, Jaques gets well forward and pushes to extra cover

1.5

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, full on the stumps, Jaques punches it back down the ground, very hard, Maharoof gets his right hand out but cant touch it, as the ball hits the nonstrikers' stumps with Hayden well out of his crease...stopped a certain four

1.6

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, beaten! This ones shorter in length and screams pas the outside edge of Jaques' bat

End of over 2 (1 run) Australia 1/0
PA Jaques    0* (10b)      MF Maharoof    1-0-1-0

Overcast conditions. A tinge of green on the surface. Early seam for the bowlers.

2.1

Vaas to Hayden, no run, length delivery, pitching on middle and off and seaming away from Hayden, who gets back and pushes to cover watchfully

2.2

Vaas to Hayden, no run, good movement from Vaas, who now pitches very full on a great channel and beats Hayden, driving loosely off the front foot

The slips are looking very interested

2.3

Vaas to Hayden, no run, good length delivery outside off, Hayden judges it better this time around, extending the front leg and then shouldering arms

2.4

Vaas to Hayden, no run, great channel again from Vaas, encouraging Hayden to get onto the front foot and drive, but he wisely leaves it be for the 'keeper

2.5

Vaas to Hayden, no run, fuller still, Vaas looking for movement and to get the left-hander driving, but the swing forces Hayden to get across and defend it back

2.6

Vaas to Hayden, no run, good length on and about off stump, Hayden tries to work it away but is hastened into the shot by the movement and plays to backward point

Second maiden from Vaas

3.2

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, good length outside off, good lift as Jaques gets up and lets it pass safely

3.3

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, short of a length, going across him sharply and beating him as he gets back and then pulls out of the shot, unconvincingly

3.4

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, fuller length, again pushed across Jaques who gets forward to play and gets beaten

3.5

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, short of a length, pitching on leg and moving in as Jaques gets up and lets it come into his midriff, the ball then dropping safely away from leg stump

3.6

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, full and pushed across his off stump, and he leaves it be

End of over 4 (maiden) Australia 1/0

4.1

Vaas to Hayden, no run, good length outside off stump, swinging away towards the slips as Hayden gets the front leg out and shoulders arms

4.2

Vaas to Hayden, 1 run, good length again but this time Hayden uses his feet to come forward and tap it towards extra cover, calling for the sharp single immediately and Jaques is quick to respond

4.3

Vaas to Jaques, no run, back of a length, pitching on off and moving away but Jaques shuffles across and keeps it down with impeccable back-foot defense

4.4

Vaas to Jaques, no run, back of a length again, this one comes in, but again Jaques gets up on the toes, right behind the line, and defends it back to Vaas

4.5

Vaas to Jaques, no run, back of a length, moving away, Jaques hustles to get in line and drives off the back foot, but he cant beat the off-side field

4.6

Vaas to Jaques, no run, fuller length, well wide of off stump, and he says no thanks to that one

Jaques not off the mark yet

End of over 5 (1 run) Australia 2/0

Decent crowd in now, as the rain's let off for a while.

5.1

Maharoof to Hayden, FOUR, fullish outside off stump, Hayden doesn't move his feet much and square-drives hard, getting a thick outside edge safely over gully for the first four of the day

5.2

Maharoof to Hayden, no run, slower ball, again full outside off and this time Hayden gets a full stride in to the ball and pushes to cover

5.3

Maharoof to Hayden, no run, full just outside off stump, Hayden gets a good judge of it and leaves after planting that front foot well down the track

5.4

Maharoof to Hayden, 3 runs, top shot! Maharoof pitches full on off and in a flash Hayden whips it through midwicket, the balls slows up and Fernando fires in a good throw over the stumps

5.5

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, good length, going across the stumps and Jaques gets back and across to let it pass safely into the keepers' gloves

5.6

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, back of a length on off stump, Jaques gets back and defends

End of over 6 (7 runs) Australia 9/0
PA Jaques    0* (22b)      MF Maharoof    3-1-8-0
ML Hayden    9* (14b 1x4)      WPUJC Vaas    3-2-1-0

Short extra cover comes in

6.1

Vaas to Hayden, FOUR, but then he goes and bowls full on off stump, allowing Hayden to flick it into the gap at midwicket and this time theres no stopping the ball

Packed off-side field, as Sri Lanka hope to get Hayden playing with a closed face or edge one seaming away outside off

6.2

Vaas to Hayden, 1 run, but its too straight, and Hayden shuffles across to work it into the gap behind square for a single

Vaas has issues with the ball, showing it to umpire Koertzen.

6.3

Vaas to Jaques, no run, good ball, pitching on a length and moving into Jaques, who tries to shuffle and work it away to leg but gets squared up deep in the crease

23 balls without a run and he looks a bit iffy

6.4

Vaas to Jaques, no run, back of a length again, now he gets behind the line and defends back to Vaas

6.5

Vaas to Jaques, no run, good length, pitching on middle and leg and moving into Jaques, who shuffles and tries to work it away but cops it on the leg, high and outside the line of impact

6.6

End of over 7 (5 runs) Australia 14/0

7.1

Maharoof to Hayden, no run, operating from over the stumps, Maharoof pitches full outside off and Hayden gets the front foot out before he leaves it be

7.2

Maharoof to Hayden, 1 run, full outside off, Hayden meets it with a good stride in and pushes just wide of Muralitharan at mid-off, but he reacts well and shows off his footie skills to save runs

7.3

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, short of a length on off stump, he shuffles across and gets tall, defending it back to Maharoof

Square leg is very deep for the pull/hook. Hayden has lost a stud or two from the sole of his boot, so he's down on the pitch attending to it. Another holdup as fix-it-all Haydos gets busy. Jaques, meanwhile, must be twitching at the other end.

7.4

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, back of a length outside off, he shuffles and pokes it to the off, but Maharoof moves across and cuts it off, and Jaques is on a duck still

7.5

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, attempted yorker ends up a bit too full but Jaques defends it back

7.6

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, back of a length, moving away outside off and Jaques leaves it alone

We're only a few overs away from the scheduled lunch break. A very short session. But an extra hour in the evening to make up for lost time. A bowling change, as Dilhara Fernando replaces Vaas. From over the stumps.

8.1

Fernando working up a decent pace in his first over

Right, back to Jaques, still on 0. And its going to be Muralitharan to bowl. Cheers for him as he comes on from over the stumps. Murali hasnt bowled in Australia for some ten years. He's nine short of Shane Warne's record. Slip and short leg in.

9.5

Muralitharan to Hayden, no run, tossed up full, Hayden steps out and pushes to Vandort at extra cover, who fumbles but Hayden doesn't chance the single

9.6

Muralitharan to Hayden, no run, tossed up full again, he gets forward and defends to silly point

End of over 10 (1 run) Australia 16/0

10.6

Fernando to Jaques, 2 runs, overpitched on off stump and its whipped away out to deep square leg for a couple and as expected, thats lunch on day one at the Gabba

So the rain has allowed just 11 overs in the first session. Hayden on 15 and Jaques on seven. Just to inform you about the scenario today. We will have 87 overs of play - weather permitting - and the second session will be from 12.40 - 3.10pm local. The final session will run from 3.30 - 6.00pm local.

Oh, when I said Murali hasn't bowled in Australia for some ten years, I was referring to Test matches against the hosts. Sorry for the confusion. You can blame the lack of sleep.

Anyway, allow me, Jamie Alter, to go and get a cup of coffee in the break. But you all do come back and join me in about half an hour for the second session, hear?

Welcome back for the second session. Skies look okay, but theres no rain. Hayden and Jaques back in the middle. Good crowd, and a fairly calm response to Murali's one over before lunch. Maharoof has the ball and will resume.

11.4

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, good length outside off, Jaques leaves it alone

And Maharoof's having issues with his front foot

11.6

Maharoof to Jaques, no run, back of a length on off stump, Jaques defends and Maharoof fields

Aidan emails in: "An anagram of Jamie Alter is Jet Air Meal which, em, has nothing to do with cricket ..."

And so we swiftly move back to the cricket.

12.1

Fernando to Hayden, FOUR, a bit of width from around the stumps and Hayden fairly bludgeons that through the off side, getting back and muscling it away with power

12.2

Fernando to Hayden, no run, short of a length, coming into him, and he gets tall to defend it back

12.3
