Chris Gayle has been reappointed West Indies captain for the upcoming tour of Australia, according to reports in the Caribbean.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) sat down in Barbados on Saturday to approve the selectors' recommendation of Gayle and several leading dailies in the region have reported Gayle's return as leader for the tough tour. The WICB is expected to name a 15-man squad later on Monday.
Gayle, 30, has not played international cricket since the home series against India in July due to the ugly contractual dispute between WICB the players' union. In his absence, the selectors were fielded depleted teams, led by Floyd Reifer, against Bangladesh and in the Champions Trophy. The name of Daren Ganga, who captained Trinidad & Tobago to the final of the inaugural Champions League, has been closely linked in the ever-changing story of the captaincy.
Gayle has led the side since 2007 but said in May that he wasn't intending to remain in the job in the long term and would also consider giving up Test cricket in the near future. His comments frustrated the WICB's new chief executive Ernest Hilaire, who said in September that Gayle's future as the captain was not guaranteed, but after several months off due to the player strike Gayle is simply keen to return to any form of cricket.
John Dyson, the recently deposed West Indies coach, revealed selectors had previously balked at moves to restore Ganga to the captaincy over concerns that his batting was not up to the rigours of international cricket. Ganga scored three centuries in 48 Tests between 1998 and 2008, averaging just 25.71.
"There was certainly some hesitation there," Dyson told Cricinfo. "Daren is obviously an impressive bloke and he is well suited to leading the Trinidadian side, but from my talks with selectors, the feeling was that he had not really grasped his opportunities in his 48 Tests.
"I think Gayle will probably hold onto the captaincy, but it would be wise of the selectors to find out just how committed he is to it. He had a lot of learning to do in terms of leadership when he first took on the job, but I think he has the raw materials to be a good captain. Many of the things that have happened to the West Indies team haven't been his fault. A lot of people would be tempted by the IPL and other leagues, and I think more and more players will let it be known that they are not totally committed to their teams. If Chris is committed to international cricket, I think he could yet be a good captain."
Gayle has had mixed results as captain, winning three Tests out of 14 and 13 ODIs out of 38. He led West Indies to two series wins in one-dayers, including an away victory against England last year, and against the touring Sri Lanka. He presided over a surprise win in the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg but his side went on to lose the next two games and the series. His other Test wins came against Sri Lanka in Port-of-Spain to level the two match series and a deciding win over England at home earlier this year, before West Indies handed back the Wisden Trophy when they toured just after.

I almost concur with x-factor's selection (Test matches only) however, Since the squad has now shown that Simmons will be left out; with one eye on the future and the other on caution. I would either stick to the tried and tested MORTON in place of an older Dowlin or better still have Darren Bravo warming the benches and room-mating with his brother Dwayne. I would be also tempted to leave Benn to improve on his fielding and running between the wickets in preference of Mohammed in the knowledge that I'd expect Sarwan, Gayle, Miller and possibly Nash to support the 'pace batery'. Gayle and Barath should be a good opening foil. It should serve as the ideal vehicle to help Gayle rein in his stroke-play and lead by example. Barath (Darren Ganga) opening pair is inexperienced and a recipe for disaster. It should be borne in mind WI's plans are not those of the Austrailians or their opposition for that matter.

Posted by valdez on (November 02 2009, 17:56 PM GMT)the position of captain of the west indies team is very difficult and complex, one must command the respect and admiration of all players from different islands, many captains in the past have been frustrated by the lack of commitment and attitude from variious players not wanting to perform at his best under a particular captain. To me the only true leader we ever had was the great sir frank worrell. everyplayer wanted to perform and give 100 per cent for sir frank, he was a very special man , knew how to communicate and was one of the boys, didnt act aloof so everyone loved him. Clive lloyd was a good captain but he had the best team in the world do his job was fairly simple, sir vivian richards was a no nonsense type of guy that didnt accept mediocrity, you either perform or leave the field. gayle has a more laid back approach. i would like to see sherwin ganga on the west indies team
Posted by RickMD on (November 02 2009, 17:47 PM GMT)I think it's wise to appoint Chris as captain. My concern is that whom ever they pick as the team is that they would need to get match practise as a team. I believe it was obvious that the success of the T&T team in the IPL 20/20 was because of the cohesiveness of the team. What will happen to the WI "2nd string team"? Will they be given an opporunity to make it on the team?
Posted by stefanbrasse on (November 02 2009, 17:02 PM GMT)Test Squad: C. Gayle [captain], A. Barath, Darren Bravo [Openers]; R. Sarwan, N. Deonarine, S. Chanderpaul, B. Nash [Middle-Order]; Dwayne Bravo, D. Ramdin, J. Taylor [Lower Order] D. Mohammed, F. Edwards, D. Sammy, S. Benn, K. Roach. My first team! C. Gayle, Darren Bravo, R. Sarwan, N. Deonarine, S. Chanderpaul, B. Nash, Dwayne Bravo, D. Ramdin, J. Taylor, D. Mohammed, F. Edwards I think its a great team this!
Posted by westindiescricketer on (November 02 2009, 16:53 PM GMT)Appointing Gayle as WI captain is a horrible move. He does not know the game. He is learning on the job and he was never even considered for his captain of his respected island team til the WI board appointed him captain because it would look bad if the WI captain wasn't even captain of his own domestic side. The West Indies domestic season is not like other countries. The schedule is four matches and you cannot argue that he can't captain because he has to play international cricket b/c the domestic sch and WI sch are not clashing at the present moment. Ramnaresh Sarwan would have been the better pick for captain begin and end! Test XI: Gayle, Barath, Sarwan, Deonarine, Chanderpaul, Nash, Ramdin, Taylor, Edwards, Permaul, Roach (Roach/Barath/Deonarine will have growing pains but you need to stick with them bc the jump from WI domestic to international is huge) ODI XI: Gayle, Simmons, Sarwan, Chanderpaul, Deonarine, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith, Ramdin,Taylor, Edwards, Rampaul
Posted by WestIndiesCricket.ORG on (November 02 2009, 16:52 PM GMT)It is rightly so that Gayle should remain captain. Although Ganga is relatively well spoken and has a sound head, he must perform at the international level to be even considered to be in the team, much less as its captain. Shiv game up the captaincy because he saw his batting (which he certainly cherishes more) beginning to suffer. It was not his fault as the side was not pulling its weight and that made the notches in the 'L' column much more unbearable for a captain. But Shiv did the right thing to gave it up and restore his place as world class batsman. Ganga has not made that move as yet to be selected and Gayle, although I do not think he is consistent enough to be a test batsman, is probably the only other person other than Sarwan to lead the team. But with the captaincy on his shoulders, he also did not cope well. One thing we need to remember, with this current WI line up in the past 7 years, whomever the captain is must not let losing be an issue which affects their game.
Posted by STOPPER on (November 02 2009, 16:02 PM GMT)it should be gayle, barath, simmons, sarwan, shiv, dwayne, darren b,ramdin, edwards, taylor, rampaul, tonge, mohammed, nash and deonarine. a good 11 to start with gayle, barath, sarwan, shiv, simmons, dwayne, ramdin, deonarine, rampaul.edwards, taylor, deonarine in for extra batting it its a turning pitch mohammed to play.
Posted by phoenix_29 on (November 02 2009, 15:58 PM GMT)Does ICC have some rule of 15 players on tour....with this kind of BIZARRE scheduling, the limit should be taken up to 20-22 players on tour making Australia play some non-stop cricket since the ASHES,no doubt that they have so many front line players injured.
Posted by stabba on (November 02 2009, 15:28 PM GMT)Otherwise from being captain, you should be able to bat bowl or keep.Ganga cant do any one of those
