Barbados-born Ricardo Ellcock was a genuinely fast bowler who battled with injury throughout his career. In six seasons with Worcestershire he only briefly showed any form, but it was when he switched to Middlesex that his fortunes changed. In eight matches he took 32 wickets, enough to persuade England's selectors to take a punt on him for that winter's tour of the Caribbean. Sadly, he had to withdraw after being diagnosed with a stress fracture of the back. He missed all of 1990 and made an unsuccessful comeback in 1991. He called it a day and returned to the Caribbean where he invested his saving into qualifying as a pilot. He eventually joined Antiguan airline Liat and then moved to Virgin Atlantic where he became the fleet's first black captain.
