Sylhet Royals 157 for 3 (Mushfiqur 75*, Thomas 2-27) beat Dhaka Gladiators 152 for 8 (Ashraful 38, Nannes 2-27) by seven wickets

Sylhet Royals achieved their fourth win in a row to lead the points table, beating Dhaka Gladiators by seven wickets in Khulna in the first big match-up of this year's BPL. Dhaka also went in the game unbeaten but fall to second after their first loss. The Royals' victory was secured by an expertly paced innings from their captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored an unbeaten 75 from 50 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes to shepherd the chase of 153 in front of a near full house.

After an initial burst from Gladiators' seamer Alfonso Thomas, Royals lifted the pace with a 79-run stand in 61 balls between Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque, before the latter was caught at long-on for 37. When the big hits were needed, Nazmul Hossain Milon, who made 25 off 17 balls, added 55 for an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand with Mushfiqur, smashing six sixes between them. The Gladiators' bowling, apart from Thomas and Saqlain Sajib, looked ineffective.

In contrast to Royals' innings, Gladiators weren't able to control theirs well. Mohammad Ashraful and Anamul Haque scored in the thirties, though neither could push the tempo at the top of the order. Darren Stevens and Josh Cobb lifted the run rate with a few sixes but the Royals kept taking wickets. Mohammad Nabi and Dirk Nannes took two wickets each, while the others too chipped in, and also kept it tight, Sohag Gazi and Bishawnath Halder in particular.

Great that Shiv will be coming he actually played well in BPL 1. Hopefully our Bangladesh batsman will learn some few things from him.

Sylhet Royals is looking invincible. Good to hear Shiv chandarpaul and DR Smith gonna to join soon. They will b indomitable. Loving this BPL 2.....

I will be honest, I did not think of Shylet as this strong! Holy cow! They actually did over power Dhaka! And now with Chanderpaul, smith and soleman joining them! What a team it's coming up to be! Damn! Rock On!

@mehdi: I disagree with you bro. Even the upcoming T20s (in SL and BD) going to be played on this kind of pitch. So it's a better preparation for our boys.

What an innings by Mushfiq. Absence of PAKISTANI making BPL more potential for local players. Its rooking.

Good thing so far is that all 7 teams are still in contention to achieve any of the semi final spots but thats still a long way to go.

Posted by Warm_Coffee on (January 25, 2013, 15:54 GMT)

Totally disagree Mehdi, hope you haven't forgotten that 99 1st innings score and yet the team batting second couldn't even chase that down resulting in a 2 run win. With big scores especially the first innings, so much pressure is on the team batting second and can easily collapse and lose.

A lots of crowd come & watch today's Bpl match. 2nd match was an outstanding match of cricket to watch. It was full house. Bpl now rock on. I like it too much as our players performing well. It also looks good when Shahriar Nafees hit Fidel 19 runs in an over.

I would much rather see a combination of high/low scores in T20s. Sure high-scoring games are fun to watch, but wouldn't the mettle of batsmen be shown truly in the slower pitches?

Today's matches were brilliant, I was hoping rangpur would just take it, not to be.

This kind of slow and lower pitches are not good for T20 and BPL. BCB should prepare batting paradise wicket so that can see lots of close matches. it is very difficult to chase in slow, lower wickets. Many matches were one sided. Hope in Chittagong BCB will look at this matter as well. T20 is all about lots of run..isn't it?
