Rahim, Chanderpaul seal big run chase

Sylhet Royals 198 for 4 (Mushfiqur 56, Chanderpaul 51) beat Rangpur Riders 197 for 4 (Shamsur 98*, Imrul 53) by six wickets
Scorecard

Sylhet Royals blazed their way to a six-wicket win after they chased down 198 against Rangpur Riders with an over to spare. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mushfiqur Rahim paved the way with quick-fire half centuries before Elton Chigumbura brought out the crucial blows to complete the victory.

The seventh win in nine games all but confirmed their qualification in the last four while Rangpur slide further down the pecking order.

With 29 runs required from the last three overs, Chigumbura hammered Murad Khan for two sixes off the last ball of the 18th over which cost 17. It left the Royals to take 12 off 12 balls which was brought down further by yet another clubbed six by Chigumbura which leveled the scores and left a comfortable finish.

Most of the credit, however, goes to Chanderpaul who drove and hacked the ball to hit six boundaries and two sixes in his 29-ball 51. He and Paul Stirling added 48 for the first wicket but Stirling's dismissal in the fifth over didn't deter Chanderpaul as he and Mushfiqur took the score to 75 off the Powerplay.

The second wicket pair added 45 before Mushfiqur added another 46 for the fourth wicket with Nazmul Hossain Milon. The Bangladesh captain struck five fours and two sixes and was the real impetus as he brought down the asking rate to a manageable region for the Royals. The target fast came within reach and, as soon as Chigumbura joined Mominul Haque at the crease, it was always going to be Royals' game to lose.

The chase overshadowed Shamsur Rahman's unbeaten 98 as the Riders opener completed his fifth half century in the tournament. He struck eight sixes in his 50-ball innings but could not quite reach three figures after he gained just a single ball in the final over. Shamsur faced just nine balls in the last five overs after reaching 90 at the end of the 15th over.

It was a stunning knock from Shamsur, peppering the leg-side boundary with flicked, pulled and slog-swept sixes while also using the straight boundary on two occasions. But it would not count for anything as the limitations of the Riders bowling attack were exposed quite badly.

Shamsur Rahman's unbeaten 98 is the fifth half-century in this tournament. Hope this guy will very soon make his spot in the national team at least for the short format. Foreign players are also showing the cause, since some of them don't get the chance to show their talents very often.

As a Sylhet Royals supporter,i must say how impressed i am with the captaincy of Musfiqur Rahim as he has led from the front. There is less outstanding individuals in the Sylhet Royals team than others but they seem to play as an unit and gel together by producing unexpected successful results.

The Bangladesh national team can learn a lot from this successful formula.

I think Cricinfo should publish an article on that Bangladesh should have three different squads for three formats.Shamshur and Milon should get chance for ODI while Shamshur and Shabbir should get chance for T20.And Marshall and Mehrab should get chance for test.

Its really disgusting when any foreign player performed boosting its highlighted on the other hand when our local boys (who are not part in the national team ) performed ,it did not focused ??

But BPL 2nd edition helps BD to find out some excellent boys (in Opening -Shamsur, Layer order -Sabbir, Middle order_milon) top class hitter batsman

Shamsur Rahman should get a chance to play for national team. He proves his talent in the Bpl. So selectors have gets a lot of talented players. This is a very good competition for our national team. More than one player for one place. This is a very good point. That's the sign of improvement of cricket.

Shamshur deserved not to get century.

Shamsur deserved a 100 but the best of reward is that he's got a spot in our limited overs team for Bangladesh.

Poor & selfish cricket played by Shamsur in last 5 overs of batting. He blasted to 90* in just 41 balls by tearing & smashing all the opposition bowlers. He was hitting sixes at his will! But once he reached 90, he was just playing very safely & defensively. He played no attacking shots in those last 5 overs! Very disappointing & silly approach! Riders could have scored nearly 210 or more if he would not have changed his game.

Interesting that the teams that have Zimbabwean players chigumbura, taylor, coventry, masakadza are in the hunt for places in the next round of the BPL, could we just be seeing the renaissance of Zim cricket(albeit in BPL/ next stop IPL then champions league?) , at least in the T 20 version of things? Would be nice to see some Bangla and Ireay, dutch and west indians in zim structures-Englich and south african players are already represented in the 0 over and 4 day versions of the local cricket...give us more !
