Dhaka Gladiators 197 for 9 (Gayle 114, Sajidul 3-23) beat Sylhet Royals 193 for 6 (Mushfiqur 86) by four runs

Chris Gayle's hurricane 114 led Dhaka to their second BPL final, Dhaka Gladiators v Sylhet Royals, BPL, Mirpur, February 15, 2013

Chris Gayle powered to his tenth Twenty20 hundred in Dhaka Gladiators' Race to the Final, but despite the huge target of 197 the Sylhet Royals gave spirited chase, and ultimately fell just short of the 24 runs they needed in the final over. With five runs needed off the last ball, Elton Chigumbura swung Mashrafe Mortaza to deep midwicket, where Darren Stevens held the catch to seal Gladiators' berth in the final of the BPL.

Royals captain Mushfiqur Rahim had batted steadily for most of the chase, keeping his side on par with the Gladiators at the 10th and 15th-over marks. He had an 82-run stand with Dwayne Smith, who made 41, for the third wicket and added 46 runs with Nazmul Hossain Milon.

With 55 to defend in the last four overs, the Gladiators got two good overs from Alfonso Thomas and Shakib Al Hasan. Thomas bowled a good penultimate over to give his captain Mashrafe Mortaza 24 runs to defend in the 20th. He nearly made a mess of it, bowling a crucial no-ball when Anamul Haque had caught Mushfiqur, who was eventually run out off the next ball for 86 off 44 balls. Chigumbura was dropped soon after by Raqibul Hasan at deep square leg but was not able to hit the final ball over the boundary.

The result validated Gladiators' last-minute buy - Gayle. The Jamaican blasted 114 off 51 deliveries, hitting 12 towering sixes. His ninth six was the longest in the tournament at 103 metres and it nearly reached the second tier of the stands behind long-on. It was the third hundred of the season, and the highest so far.

The Royals' fielders stood with hands on hips and necks craned, following the path of those big hits. They had been on top until the 10th over, having reduced the Gladiators to 64 for 5. Tillakaratne Dilshan was out off the first ball of the innings to Sohag Gazi, before Mohammad Ashraful was caught at fine leg off Chigumbura. Shakib Al Hasan blasted 38 off 21 balls with four sixes but he was cleaned up by debutant Sajidul Islam, who then removed Stevens off the next ball. Anamul's dismissal in the ninth over was a major blow, but it just opened up the arena to two of the biggest hitters in the field.

The Gayle-Kieron Pollard partnership played out two quiet overs, but the pair got going in the 14th over, taking 24 off Suharwadi Shuvo. Gayle scored 23 of those, striking three sixes and a boundary. He smashed Nazmul Hossain Milon for 29 runs in the 17th over, and took 16 off Sajidul in the next, also bringing up his century. He soon got out, and the Gladiators' tail couldn't take the total past the 200-run mark.

The result meant the Royals will have to face the winner of the knockout match between Chittagong Kings and Duronto Rajshahi.

However Sylhet wins the heart of Dhaka!!

Posted by Warm_Coffee on (February 16, 2013, 14:15 GMT)

Chris Gayle was made for T20 Cricket.

Posted by ExtremeSpeed on (February 16, 2013, 10:45 GMT)

Good young talent of BPL 2 who can potentially play for the national team - Narul, Milon, Shamsur, Taskin etc

@derherp - He failed in all 11 innings against Bangladesh end of last year :P

Posted by   on (February 16, 2013, 10:35 GMT)

I thought that Mushfiqur Rahim's innings of 86 was far better than Chris Gayle's 114,because Mushfiqur was facing far better bowling attack then Gayle and had to sacrifice his wicket.Chris Gayle played a tremendous of innings, but bulk of his runs was scored against the three part-time bowlers.

Most people are commenting that Sylhet Royal lost the game due to Milon coming ahead of Elton which could be true, but to me the game was lost because the Royals did not have the fifth specialist bowler.Facts and figures prove that.

Sylhet will win the FINAL obviously inshallah!

Posted by   on (February 16, 2013, 8:53 GMT)

i thnk hossain milon ahead of elton was the game turner

Honestly speaking, This time I enjoyed BPL more due to the absence of Pakistani players. Also some quality foreign players got chance to play BPL.

Mushi I'm very sorry for u. Cricket sometimes mysterious to u as last day as Asia cup final also. But u r the hero of our Bangali heart. Don't be upset it is just a match u loose. We got from u a lot of things. I believe once upon a time you get the world cup & ur all feelings come into act. U have great heart of cricket thats why I believe u can do it.

what a match.. hats off to mushfique... i think behind the success of this royal team he is the main person...... GAYLE showed how to entertain the crowd(with his muscle power) MUSHFIQUE showed how u can win without actually wining the match(by his heart)....... i am a DHAKA supporter , & i was in the stadium... every six's of Gayle made us crazy but when sylhet was batting (MUSHI) all the people at the stadium can't hold their tear...he entertained all of us by making us cry & that me & us will never forget......

Posted by rakibul-narail-bd on (February 16, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

a bad decision mushy to bring inexperienced milon against gayle.

Posted by Tapash on (February 16, 2013, 6:29 GMT)

Sylhet Royals lost to Dhaka because of player setting. Why they sent Milon before Chigumbura. Chigumbura is known as strong hitter and required rate was above 12. We don't see any reason Sylhet lost except mismatching players position.

Posted by   on (February 16, 2013, 6:11 GMT)

sylhet royals are best team in bpl 2013 have one more chance i think sylhet will be final i like sylhet royals bpl rock

More proof he can't bat against quality attacks...

Congrats DHAKA!! one of the best match in BPL-2 ! \m/

The cricket in Bangladesh is reaching in a different height considering the popularity. We get coverage almost in every day with matches or articles covered by dedicated cricinfo staff Mohammad Islam or others and yet we don't have a dedicated Edition like other countries. As seem to me (no compare though), BD cricket is more happening than Pak cricket these days, yet Pak got a dedicated edition! There's a huge fan base following BD cricket from locally & abroad and I bet this number would be next to India in terms of traffic. So, I demand a dedicated Edition for Bangladesh and reasonably it would be commercially viable for Cricinfo.

What a game best T20 game ever seen. Can't wait to see rest of the tournament.

Glory Glory Dhaka Gladiators!!.....what a match.....this guy Gayle is just a bully....strategic mistake though for sylhet putting Milon before chigumbura....I know Milon has done well but chigumbura is an international cricketer with lots of experience and have far more ability than milon.....I heard Gayle won't play the final.....but gladiators is still strong

Good to see Gazi getting Dilshan out for a "Golden Duck", will give him great confidence for the Sri Lanka series and players like Dilshan will have to up their guard and know it will not be easy as they once thought.

@MAR ZAN ,cricinfo publishes BPL news on the homepage in bangladesh news

Posted by reyme on (February 15, 2013, 23:35 GMT)

This article should go to the front page of cricinfo. Feel sorry for the fans who missed out on this. For me, it was the greatest T20 match ever!

Posted by PT15 on (February 15, 2013, 22:30 GMT)

big congratulations to Dhaka Gladiators for the win, good game of T20, i am a fan of Shakib Al Hasan that's why hoping for the dhaka's win but hard luck to Sylhet Royals, for me shakib inning was also very important as he remove the pressure from the gayle in the beginning of the match and it gives gayle time to settle down, you can argue about his place in the all-time allrounder list but you can't argue about his place in the current generation of allrounder, he is among the top 3, but why r u criticizing India for cricinfo's fault, i am also from India but i also try to watch most of the game, u have got very good players

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 21:43 GMT)

Most exciting T20 match i have watched in a long time!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (February 15, 2013, 21:24 GMT)

Elton Chigumbura would have outshone Gayle if they got him in before the last 2 overs , amazingly he still managed tot ake it to the last ball he is an incredible batsman remind me of a modern Desmond Haynes with that short snappy backlift and clean hitting, great to see Gayle back but he needs to does this at international level - will be interesting to see hwo both he and Elton Chigumbura go against each other in the coming ZImbabwe West Indies tour.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 21:22 GMT)

if cricinfo dont publish our BPL NEWS ON HOME page than we all BANGLADESHI supporter will avoid CRICINFO

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 21:20 GMT)

i am really sad about cricinfo why best match of BPL are not showing in cricinfo home page , its really shame . can ask cricinfo why we read all article in cricinfo becoz we want read something exiting news and its BPL play off match and CHIRS GAYLE PLAYED best cricket we ever seen and u guys not showing that . this news much better than other news what u showing in home page

Posted by neer17 on (February 15, 2013, 21:08 GMT)

It is definitely one of the most entertaining T20 match ever I've seen!

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 20:51 GMT)

Gr8 knock from big hitter... Entertaining cricketer... But Royals Mushfique tried hard to foil them... Whatever Gayle and Mushfique both played well... This is the best match of BPL season 2..

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (February 15, 2013, 20:46 GMT)

It wasn't the greatest T20 match like some fans pointing out but a very good match, could've gone either way and that's what made it exciting to watch. The way Gayle changed gears after the 12th over was amazing because he was still on like 30 then suddenly on a 100.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 19:23 GMT)

The most fantastic T20 game up to date ever played and the players faces showed that it was a pure pleasure for them to have been involved in such a awesome match.Any genuine cricket fan would have enjoyed this brilliant match.

The best thing about it is that we could all have the pleasure again of seeing these two teams in the final.

Great advert for BPL and Bangladesh.

I think we should have a part 3 of Dhaka vs Sylhet and Shohag Gazi vs Chris Gayle!

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 19:00 GMT)

The reason there is no coverage on main page is because its not IPL. Its all India other than international games on the main page

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 18:56 GMT)

Only from the Great Gayle!!!!

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 18:48 GMT)

Sylhet could have win this game Nazmul Hossain Milon bowled and bat really bad today at they very important part of the game he was getting one while have 7 more wickets in hand he should have hit the ball anyway good game really good game i wish sylhet can make it to the final again.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 17:58 GMT)

Great match..and second consecutive hundred by gayleforce in T20 non international...Dhaka on the basis of player to player can give every team a scare..the only problem is when they will reach champions league..the players like gayle, pollard and others will choose their IPL sides where moolah is quite high or if not then they will chose their home countries teams..

but still exceptional match..tha little rahim nearly pulled off a scare!

Posted by Tokai69 on (February 15, 2013, 17:58 GMT)

Really surprised seeing no coverage of this game in the main page! One of the best game ever I've seen this T20 format!!

Superb Yaarrr , how could it miss it oh no :( , just missed one of the best innings ever played

Posted by SNH4CRICKET on (February 15, 2013, 17:53 GMT)

This is the third of the season of BPL 2 . Gayle played a great t20 innings and I THINK HE HAS CAME OUT OF BAD PATCH.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 17:49 GMT)

Once I felt it could be the Final match in BPL 2. Both Team played head to head. Gayle is a monster, lol. But all credit goes to Mushfiq for the amazing counter attack. Congrats to Dhaka Gladiators. better luck for the next match for Sylhet Royals. :)

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 17:45 GMT)

wow.. awesome.. just awesome.. great match played in this bpl so far...

Gayle will always bring $$$ to the game of cricket. Every 2020 franchise should buy this man

Posted by reyme on (February 15, 2013, 17:31 GMT)

This is perhaps the best T20 game every played in the history!

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 17:30 GMT)

@ siri12345 Well said ! ! And Mushfiqur Rahim should have sent Chigumbura ahead of Milon.

Posted by British_North_America on (February 15, 2013, 17:24 GMT)

Well, there is wrong information in the report, it was the third hundred after Ashraful's and Shahriar's.

Posted by CrICkeeet on (February 15, 2013, 17:21 GMT)

it was the best t-20 match ever!!

Posted by M_Rakibul_Islam on (February 15, 2013, 16:58 GMT)

Chris Gayle was on 27 (29 balls), this is what happened to his next 20 balls: 4, 1, 4, 6, 1, 6, 6, 2, 6, 6, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 2, 1, 1, 6, 6. 15 minutes later - Gayle 114 (51 balls)! That's really awesome. Credit goes to MUSHFIQ too! 86 of just 44. And SAJIDUL is the surprise of the day, he has taken wkts of Shakib & Stevens in his 1st 2 deliveries in T20 career. 3/23 in 4 overs: What a way to debut in T20!

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 16:38 GMT)

Congratulations and Thanks to both the teams for such an awesome match.
