Australia in Bangladesh ODI Series - 1st ODI

Bangladesh v Australia

Australia won by 60 runs

The firm of Haddin and Watson are in the middle. Shafiul has the new ball. We are all set.

9.10 am News coming in from Mirpur is that Bangladesh have won the toss, and will have a bowl.

Shakib: "Looks a good wicket, Australia are the No 1 team, we have to put up a good show, crowd expected us to do well in the World Cup, we have another chance to do well. 250-260 is a very good total on this wicket." Mashrafe is playing today.

Clarke: "We would have batted first anyways. We are at full strength, we would like to start with a win. We have got a good mix of spinners. Spin is going to play a huge part in this series."

Callum Ferguson, James Pattinson, and Tim Paine miss out. Will be a good test for Steve Smith and Xavier Doherty, they went for some runs in the tour game against the BCB XI.

Ranil Abeynaike says it looks a pretty good surface to bat on, there are a few cracks, there is some dry grass rolled in, but there looks to be some moisture there, which he says should dry out pretty soon. Bat first and then turn it on with the spinners, he advises.

8.50 am Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first ODI between Bangladesh and Australia in Mirpur. So much has changed in the past few days. The World Cup is history, Ricky Ponting's captaincy is history, and Michael Clarke has the chance to ease into the leadership role away from home in a low-profile series. What effect will it have on his batting? Will he be able to play a more pro-active role as far as the spinners are concerned, compared to his predecessor? He has already stated his intention to get reluctant bowler Cameron White - who has of late completely lost all confidence to bowl his legspinners - to get in some overs regularly. Brydon Coverdale ponders over more possibilities and expectations in his preview.

Two batting collapses against West Indies and South Africa cost Bangladesh a place in the World Cup quarter-finals, and they would want to continue their improvement that has seen them become worthy opponents at home in recent times. Mashrafe Mortaza is making his latest comeback from injury; there are some concerns relating to whether he is fully fit or not, but Bangladesh would be glad to see their premier fast bowler back.

Mashrafe Mortaza will steam in from the other end, one slip in place

Tawfiqur: "Bangladesh has lot to prove after the batting debacle in world cup. Looks they did not get Alok kapali and Hom in the eleven. They need to show they have middle order batsmen, not a bunch of opening batsmen posing to be middle order batsmen."

2.1

Shafiul Islam to Haddin, no run, hmm, this one kept a bit low outside off stump, Haddin was surprised as he pushed at it from the crease in to the off side

2.2

Shafiul Islam to Haddin, 1 run, a sign of how this pitch is going to play out as the day goes on, Haddin looked to smash this fuller one down the ground, but was through with the shot early, and had to be satisfied with a single as the ball rolled towards midwicket off the inside edge

2.3

Shafiul Islam to Watson, no run, Watto with that front foot drive to a delivery that is not quite there for the shot, but it screams off the middle of the bat, and goes on the bounce to mid off

3.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Haddin, OUT, the Narail express is in business, Haddin has perished to that adventurous method of making room outside leg stump, did so again, Mash followed him with a length ball, Haddin had even taken a few steps down the track, had a weak push at it as the ball came in too close, missed, and middle stump is pegged back, it was the slower one

BJ Haddin b Mashrafe Mortaza 10 (16m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 90.90

5.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Ponting, FOUR, cut away, there were numerous men lurking in that region, but Ricky Ponting gets it through them, he arrested his natural front foot movement, waited for the ball to come on, it wasn't too far outside off, but he timed the shot so well that no one had any chance

5.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Ponting, FOUR, and now the perfect straight drive, Mash goes full, too full on the stumps, and Ricky dispatches it past the non-striker, mid on gives up the chase early

Omair: "Clarke's a very valuable player on the slow subcontinent tracks. I don't think anyone doubts his abilities as batsman or captain. I think the area that he really needs to work on is finding the boundary when he is settled and has gone past 50 or 60. He needs to take a leaf out of Mahela Jayawardene's book. Mahela got to a steady 50 in the WC final and then without us even noticing, found boundaries with late cuts and just really good touch play and raced to 100."

Gareth: "Lot's of Clarke-Doubters over here in Aus, and i think Pup's doing a good job of silencing them and stepping up to the plate. He had a few lean seasons, but he's come of age EXACTLY when his country needed him. True sign of a champion."

45.2

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Clarke, 1 run

45.3

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Smith, 1 run, well, this has been the Australian approach today, play the spinners from down the track, Smith does that and flicks through square leg

45.4

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Clarke, 1 run, scurries down the track and gets the single down the ground

45.5

david: "True sign of a champion is when you can do it under pressure in a World Cup semi final. Yes A "pup doubter" still. Struggles to achieve under pressure. No pressure today. Captains needs to be able too do that. Verdict is still out on Pup."

47.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Clarke, 1 run, full and outside off stump, he slaps it down to long off

47.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Clarke, 2 runs, and again, this time he moves around in the crease before slamming a fuller one down the ground for a couple more

Jack Bauer: "Michael Clarke averages almost 45 in ODI's. Show me a player with more than 100 ODI's with a better average, apart from Dhoni and SRT. I don't like the guy personally, but you all need to stop hating for no reason, and support good cricket." I agree completely

Clarke has done some damage to his left forearm. Liam: "@david: I don't think that the absence of pressure takes any of the excellence out of 90 runs."

47.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Clarke, 1 run, driven down to long on for a single, and Clarke will keep the strike

End of over 48 (7 runs) Australia 239/6 (RR: 4.97)

Mash to bowl the last over

49.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Clarke, 1 run, wide delivery, too wide for Clarke who had to really stretch out to slap that one wide of extra cover, did not get enough power on it, can he get his 100?

Mashrafe Mortaza to Clarke, OUT, now he is gone, got underneath the fuller one and swung it high in the air, long on settled underneath it, and took it tumbling down in the end

MJ Clarke c Mahmudullah b Mashrafe Mortaza 101 (168m 111b 6x4 2x6) SR: 90.99

49.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Johnson, SIX, waist high full toss to end with, and Mitch kills it over deep square leg, just flicked it off the hip and away she went, the last two overs have cost Bangladesh dear

Jake: "I sometimes wonder why Mitch isnt asked to open the batting when the ball is hard and coming on to the bat. Give him a licence to cut loose. What would you lose? He can be very damaging on his day."

Michael Clarke will be proud of his batting performance in his first match as official captain. It was a difficult pitch to bat on, but he went about his task serenely, using his feet almost each time to the spinners. Ricky Ponting looked in supreme touch as he got going with a flurry of boundaries, but his run out and Watson;s dismissal put the responsibility squarely on Clarke, and how has he responded, getting 101 when the next best score is 37.

Shakib was miserly with the ball, but was let down by his other bowlers, especially the spinners who overdid the leg stump line, allowing easy singles. This will be a difficult chase, join us in some time.

Andrew: "The silence is deafening - can you all stop bagging on Clarke now and to your attention to non performers such as White/Smith?"
