Mashrafe Mortaza is among four changes in the Bangladesh team for the first two ODIs against New Zealand later this month. Anamul Haque, Rubel Hossain and Naeem Islam are the other inclusions in the 15-man squad.

The changes were made from Bangladesh's last ODI series played against Zimbabwe back in May, which they lost 1-2.

Mashrafe's last ODI appearance was against West Indies last year after which he suffered a heel injury during this year's final of the BPL. This was the latest addition to his catalogue of leg injuries over the last 12 years, which has forced him to miss 103 ODIs during his career.

The only cricket behind him is the Dhaka Premier League where he 11 wickets from six matches at an average of 19.45 for Mohammedan Sporting Club.

Similar to Mashrafe, Naeem's last ODI was also against West Indies last year after which, like the pace bowler, he picked up an injury, on his quadriceps, during the BPL. He recovered sufficiently to tour England with the Bangladesh A side where he made a century, and has also played in the DPL.

Squad for first two ODIs against New Zealand

  • Mushfiqur Rahim¬†(capt.), Mahmudullah (vice-captain), Anamul Haque, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi, Rubel Hossain, Mominul Haque, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Ziaur Rahman, Shamsur Rahman
  • Who's in: Mashrafe Mortaza, Anamul Haque, Rubel Hossain, Naeem Islam
  • Who's out: Jahurul Islam, Mohammad Ashraful, Robiul Islam, Sajedul Islam

The other two players included were Anamul, who skipped the Zimbabwe tour to attend college examinations, and Rubel who had to be withdrawn after the Test series there due to a bout of chicken pox.

Jahurul Islam is the only batsman who has been dropped from the team that lost the ODI series in Zimbabwe. He was out for a golden duck in the only game he played, and although he has been training with the Bangladesh Test squad off-late, Anamul was persisted with instead of him.

Robiul Islam has not also recovered adequately from a quadriceps injury that prevented him from playing in the ongoing Dhaka Test. Sajedul Islam has not been in form for quite a while now and is the other dropped player from the squad while Mohammad Ashraful is suspended pending a tribunal of alleged involvement in BPL corruption.

Bangladesh and New Zealand will play the first ODI on October 29 in Mirpur after the ongoing second Test.

i think the best combination of BD team will be...1.Tamim iqbal 2.Shamsur rahman 3.Nasir hossain 4.Mominul haque 5.Sakib-al-hasan 6.Mushfiqur rahim 7.Mahmudullah 8.Ziaur rahman 9.Sohag gazi 10.Mashrafe mortaza 11.Abdur razzak....nasir is the perfect man for no.3 position...good luck bangladesh...

My Best 11 for 1st ODI is: Tamim Iqbal, Shamsur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Ziaur Rahman/Al Amin, Mashrafe Mortaza, Sohag Gazi, Abdur Razzak. Here I have included (7 batsman, 2 Seam bowlers & 2 Genuine Spinners)

Posted by Talim Bangladeshi on (October 27, 2013, 12:44 GMT)

my team: tamim, anamul, nayeem, mominul, sakib, mushi, nasir, gazi, mash, shafiul, razzak. this team is only for 1st odi. if anamul fails again, replace him and take shamsur in his place. mushi should use his bowling options like mominul and nasir. mash and shafiul r the best pace attack. and please keep rubel out. all d very best for bd team.

Even though BD has right combination of players but incorrect batting order has often let them down. BD should make 3 changes from the test squad to the ODI squad. Include Masrafee & Shafiul as pace bowlers and replace Marshall with another batsman. Neither Mahmudullah or nor Naeem is a good replacement as their style of play is not so impressive.

BD selectors and captain should really give some thought about batting order and be prepared this ODI team for next world cup. Tamim & Anamul should always open. Nasir should be considered for no 3 position followed by Mominul & Shakib.

My team: Tamim,Anamul/Shamsur,Mominul,Mahmudullah,Shakib,Mushfiq,Nasir,Zia,Mashrafee, Shohag,Razzak....Anamul can be included for some early boundaries as u need early boundaries to put pressure on the opposition and it's not bad if they come from both ends!!,the batting order(the middle order)can be interchanged as per match situation...

Posted by   on (October 26, 2013, 17:06 GMT)

In fact team selection depends upon the pitch on the particular day,but i think that Rubel Hossain cant be included,he will go for plenty, and i am afraid Mushfiq wont enjoy bowling him ten overs.Shafiul is a good swing bowler in these conditions and it depends on the pitch whether he should be included or not.If the track is a slow one then I think Bangladesh should go with none of them in fact, rather they should include both Mashrafee and Zia in the team. Then we will have almost 11 batsmen,in a way everyone has got some capability with the bat,and both of them are good hitters too.So if we play with this team we will post good totals in the board every time.I am saying this because sometimes even after a good start and in a flat wicket, when u lose few wickets in the middle and u r maybe 5/6 down with still around 15 overs to go,u cant be agressive all the time. But with this long batting the team can keep the momentum all through the 50 overs....

Posted by   on (October 26, 2013, 16:35 GMT)

we can select any 11 player out of 15. nowadays we have lot of alternative player in team. But firstly we have to see what actually want this cricket pitch at 1st ODI.

Posted by   on (October 26, 2013, 15:56 GMT)

i think selection is not carect.... my 11 would be slect,,1.Tamim 2.samsur 3.Nasir 4.muminul .5.sakib 6.mushfiq 7.mahmullah 8.masrafi 9.suhag 10.razzaq 11.rabiul

Posted by Naimur27 on (October 26, 2013, 15:18 GMT)

MY XI for the first ODI 1.Tamim 2.Shamsur 3.Mominul 4.Mushfiq 5.Shakib 6.Nasir. 7.Mahmudullah(OR ZIA if they want an extra seamer). 8.Gazi 9.Mashrafe 10.Razzak 11.Rubel

Posted by hasib9 on (October 25, 2013, 18:53 GMT)

I forgot to include Mominul to my list. He is probably the best #3 option. He is the man of the moment.

Posted by Warm_Coffee on (October 25, 2013, 15:25 GMT)

My 11 - Tamim, Naeem, Mominul, Nasir, Shakib, Rahim, Riyad, Zia, Mashrafe, Razzak and Shafiul.

Bangladesh need to play more ODI Cricket otherwise the team will fail at the world cup. 2012 we only played 9 ODIs and again this year 2013 after this series 9 ODIs. What is BCB doing? please arrange more ODI Cricket especially 5 match series since it is our favourite format and one where we can win games. Even against associates like Ireland will do home and/or away since their pitches are similar to New Zealand down under.

Posted by hasib9 on (October 25, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

For heaven's sake, please do not include Rubel. He can give away winning matches just like Ishan Sharma. Shafiul is so much of a better choice with the new ball and also during batting power play. Remember his WC performance against England? Yes he can bat as well. Zia can be added as a "3rd fast bowler". Here is my team: 1. Tamim, 2. Anamul, 3. Shakib, 4. Mushfiq, 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Nasir, 7. Zia, 8. Gazi, 9. Mortaza, 10. Shafiul, 11. Razzak. Everyone on this list can bat. Razzak, Gazi, and Shakib can bowl 30 overs. The other 20 shared between Mortaza, Shafiul, Mahmudullah, Zia, and one or 2 overs for Nasir. If BD insists on getting a number 3, then Naeem for Zia. Plenty of spin options.

Posted by prosanto on (October 25, 2013, 9:02 GMT)

1.Tamim 2. Naeem 3.Mominul 4.Shakib 5.Mushfiq 6.Nasir 7.Zia 8.Gazi 9.Mashrafe 10.Razzak 11.Shafiul.

I think this is the best XI for Bangladesh. bat very deep. 3 all rounders ( 3,7,8) 2 pacers (9,11) and best ODI spinner(10)

Posted by Nasim_Ahmed on (October 25, 2013, 3:19 GMT)

@TheRisingTeam & AdamShadamComment- Yes, Rubel is an average seamer but which one of our fast bowlers have decent bowling average and economy rate to seal the position of No.11? We can appreciate his efforts in the team while bowlers like Robiul, Shafiul or Nazmul have been suffering from injuries. Regarding him being chopped in the death overs- the scenario often is that Mushi'd rather give a spinner the new ball, then in the death overs when our key spinners are used out, Rubel becomes exposed to the hard hitters of the opposition's middle-lower order. Moreover, our seamers are often victims from the edges off good balls yielding boundaries rather than a wiket due to the defensive fieldset. If any seamer must be kept out of the team regardless of the situation, I think it's Shahadat, :p.

Good selection of squad except Marshall could be included instead of Shamsur as the better alternate opener in case Anamul fails. I miss Robiul and Nazmul though. For the first ODI, the best 11 would be- 1. Tamim 2. Anamul 3. Mominul 4. Naeem 5. Shakib 6. Mushfiq 7. Nasir 8. Mahmudullah 9. Gazi 10. Razzak 11. Mashrafe. Given our weakness in opening, one might suggest Shamsur or Naeem at No. 2 but I'd like to stick to Anamul who is too valuable an asset to just dismiss over few bad patches and should be given ample chances. Besides, Shamsur isn't genuinely an opener either and previous attempts to promote Naeem up the order failed while he had performed well at No. 4/5. Regarding our seaming position, Mashrafe is definitely the first choice but he mustn't take much pressure. If needed be We can include Ziaur in place of Naeem for his support of medium pace.

Mashrafee, a man who cling to cricket beyond all doubt. Injury never dint him. Allah may help to do something in Bangladesh cricket so that the whole world become startle and u finally go rest with pride.

Posted by   on (October 24, 2013, 15:49 GMT)

My 11 would be Tamim, Shamsur, Naeem, Mominul, Shakib, Mushfiq, Nasir, Gazi, Mashrafee, Razzak, Shafiul

Posted by   on (October 24, 2013, 14:25 GMT)

Open: 1.Tamim 2. Shamsur One Down: 3. Naeem Two Down: 4. Mominul 5. Shakib (Al-rounder) 6. Mushfiq 7. Nasir 8. Gazi (Al-rounder) 9. Mashrafee 10. Razzak 11. Shafiul No question that team win the series against NZ.

cricinfo is telling BD lacks no.3 batsman.. So where is Marshall? He should be in he squad. I think he impressed enough with his placid technique in this ongoing test series in no. 3 spot to get a call in the ODI squad.

Posted by Rafelgibt on (October 24, 2013, 11:19 GMT)

Where is Al Amin and why Anamul is in the ODI squad???Clearly Anamul is out of form.He deserves break.Shamsur should get into opening with Tamim and one down should be Naeem Islam. My Team would be Tamim,Shamshur,Naeem,Shakib,Nasir,Mushfiq,Mahmadullah,Zia,Gazi,Mashrafee and Razzak..........All the best

My Team is ..... Tamim, shamshur,Mominul,Sakeeb,Nasir,Mushi,Mahmadullah,Zia,Gazi,Mashrafee and Raj..........

Good to see Mortaza back in the side, he still has 3-4 years of good cricket left in him, he needs to ensure that he does not pick up any further injuries, Bangladesh cricket needs him.

Posted by   on (October 24, 2013, 1:12 GMT)

This is got to be the lineup: Tamim,Anamul, Naeem,Mominul,Shakib,Mushfiq,Nasir,Mahmudullah, Gazi,Mashrafe,Razzak

Honestly where is Nazmul? Why the he'll is he always losing out? He provides genuine swing off the ball... BCB OPEN THE EYES

Posted by CricketChat on (October 24, 2013, 0:33 GMT)

Why did BCB select Mortaza? Good bowler he once was, he has become prone to injuries for several yrs now. Time to invest in youth.

Posted by Nuria_Rahim15 on (October 23, 2013, 19:42 GMT)

@kamrul huq Maroof he isn't out of the squad...:P

Posted by SyedAreYouDumb on (October 23, 2013, 19:37 GMT)

Tamim Shamsur Anamul Shakib Mushi Nasir Mahmadullah Gazi Mortaza Razzak Shafiul would be my ODI team. Had Nazmul been fit he would have been in place of Shafiul who has recently bowled brilliantly. Hearing the ODI team and therefore the odi series coming up has made me more happier and turned our attention away from the abysmal first innings display in the 2nd test.

Posted by asiacricket1234 on (October 23, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

Thank God. At last a good news. Test series is gone but we can still win the ODI series and having Mash back is a great news :). May Allah Bless him and our team

Posted by   on (October 23, 2013, 17:48 GMT)

If both Mashrafe and Shafiul can up their game in the ODI series NZ will have a tough time even before Shakib, Razzak and Gazi start to strangle their batsmen from runs. What the BD team should keep in consideration is ofcourse that the Kiwis have had more time acclimatising unlike the previous Bangla wash tour

Posted by   on (October 23, 2013, 17:23 GMT)

Enamul Haque Jr deserves a chance instead of Abdur Razzak,,,,,also Al-Amin Hossain in place of Rubel Hossain because his death-bowling was the cause of many defeats in recent past

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (October 23, 2013, 16:33 GMT)

What's the point of Rubel? his test average is probably the worst of all fast bowlers right now in World Cricket and even in limited overs he's bad. I remember Samuels smashing him for 30 runs in 1 over last year. My XI - Tamim, Anamul, Mominul, Nasir, Shakib, Rahim, Mahmudullah, Rahman, Mashrafe, Razzak and Shafiul. ODIs are Bangladesh's best and favourite format by the way. Forget about tests since we're rubbish at that form.

Posted by AdamShadamComment on (October 23, 2013, 15:42 GMT)

lately the trouble with him was death bowling's, he got spanked many times and the game was gone!

Posted by   on (October 23, 2013, 15:18 GMT)

Good to see Mortaza back in action. I think this is the best XI for the upcoming ODI against NZ-1. Tamim Iqbal, 2.Anamul Haque/ Naeem Islam, 3.Mominul Haque, 4.Shakib Al Hasan 5.Mushfiqur Rahim (capt.), 6.Nasir Hossain 7.Mahmudullah (vice-captain), 8.Sohag Gazi ,9.Ziaur Rahman , 10.Mashrafe Mortaza, 11.Abdur Razzak

Posted by Hmk12 on (October 23, 2013, 15:03 GMT)

Very good selection, mortaza might be selected in longer format also

Posted by   on (October 23, 2013, 14:37 GMT)

is there any reason to keep mominul out of ODI squad???
