Match facts

February 12, 2014
Start time 1700 local (1100 GMT)

Big picture

Bangladesh are tenth in the ICC's Twenty20 rankings. Sri Lanka are No. 1. The hosts have little to lose in the two-match series but they will be desperate to cause an upset, if only to show the side is unaffected by Tamim Iqbal resigning the vice-captaincy and the other changes in leadership.

With Mahela Jayawardene back in the T20 line-up after missing the games in UAE, Sri Lanka are likely to test the combination they will field at the World Twenty20 next month: a blend of youth and experience. Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan have the responsibility of firing the innings, Kumar Sangakkara and Jayawardene will steady the middle order, and the captain Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews will provide the end assault. Lasith Malinga will lead the bowling, with Thisira Perera, Nuwan Kulasekera and Sachitra Senanayake completing the attack.

Mashrafe Mortaza has been given charge of Bangladesh's T20 team in the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim and he will have to manage an environment made delicate by Tamim's stepping down.

Bangladesh's counter will be led by openers Tamim Iqbal and Shamsur Rahman. If Tamim's neck problem rules him out, Anamul Haque will have to fill that role. Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain will be in charge of the middle order, helping the likely debutant Sabbir Rahman, Bangladesh's best domestic Twenty20 batsman. Shakib will also have to lead the bowling.

Watch out for

Bangladesh need a plan to stop Kusal Perera from running away the game, like he did last year in Pallekele. Perera scored a first-class hundred two weeks ago, and made 84 in Sri Lanka's last Twenty20.

Shamsur Rahman is Bangladesh's form batsman. He is an aggressive opener, always on the front foot and quick on the drive. Sri Lanka will be aware of the impact he can have.

Team news

Tamim has a slight neck strain while Shamsur was down with fever two days before the match. Both are expected to play though. Mithun Ali is expected to keep wicket in Mushfiqur Rahim's replacement, though Anamul Haque is also an option. Arafat Sunny is also another likely starter; he could replace Al-Amin Hossain.

Bangladesh (likely) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Shakib Al Hasan 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Mithun Ali (wk), 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah/Sabbir Rahman, 8 Farhad Reza, 9 Sohag Gazi, 10 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 11 Arafat Sunny

Jayawardene will return home after splitting the webbing on his left hand while taking a high catch during practice and will be unavailable for the rest of the T20s and ODIs. This is the same area where he injured himself while trying to grab a low chance in the slips in the first innings of the Dubai Test against Pakistan last month. Also, Lahiru Thirimanne's injury means the No. 7 slot could go to Seekkuge Prasanna, or Angelo Perera.

Sri Lanka (likely) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara, 5 Dinesh Chandimal (capt & wk), 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Seekuge Prasanna/Angelo Perera, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Sachitra Senanayake, 11 Lasith Malinga

Pitch and conditions

The Chittagong surface will be flat once again. There will be little lateral movement, and the fast outfield could make for a high-scoring game.

Stats and trivia

  • The Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong will be hosting its first Twenty20 international.

  • Bangladesh will not climb the T20 rankings even if they win 2-0. Sri Lanka will cede the No. 1 spot to India if they lose 2-0.

  • Jayawardene will become the second Sri Lankan after Dilshan to play 50 Twenty20 internationals.

  • Mortaza will be Bangladesh's fifth Twenty20 captain. He has already led in seven ODIs and a Test match.

"Every single game now is important for us before the World Cup. We have to get prepared with the conditions and weather."

i do not know about wicket but as a t20 team our attack is the worst and if i remember we lost most of the recent t20's due to first innings mammoth total. it looks not a good decision by captain.

This Sri Lanka team is easily the world best T20I team and I predict they will be world champion in the forthcoming T20 WC (if normal cricket is played). Bangladesh has nothing to lose in this 2 matches, therefore, and I would like to see all three newcomers debut in the first match...

    1. Tamim/Anamul 2. Shamsur 3. Shakib 4. Mominul 5. Nasir 6. Sabbir 7. Mithun (WK) 8. Arafat 9. Mahmudullah/Gazi 10. Mashrafe (capt.) 11. Al-Amin/Farhad

  • POSTED BY anver777 on | February 12, 2014, 4:28 GMT

Tamim Iqbal needs a strong knock before the WT20 !!! Prasanna's inclusion is a plus point for SL !!!!

  • POSTED BY SriLankanYoungBlood on | February 12, 2014, 3:36 GMT

Since 35+ 3 seniors playing i wish SL defeat and BD win. But I feel SL will this becoz BD has some bad habit getting first game very lightly. bowls every where field very badly. If they correct that they could win d match and win the series. Other thing they have to concern is Kusal Perera who plays with 150-200 SR every time and it's important to get rid him as early as possible. 3 seniors and Chandimal make runs for themselves normally getting run a ball couldn't go total more than 160 Good Luck BD.................

  • POSTED BY wapuser on | February 11, 2014, 23:12 GMT

Good luck bd. Hope to see a competitive match

  • POSTED BY lionspaw on | February 11, 2014, 23:11 GMT

I'm Looking forward to a thrilling contest. BD is an unpredictable team when it comes to shorter format of the game. Seekuge Prasanna is far better than Angelo perera. He proved himself during the pakistani tour. Angelo perera cant even compare with seekuge prasanna's talent.

  • POSTED BY Ain_EL_Sabet on | February 11, 2014, 22:34 GMT

I think Ziaur Rahman can be very effective t-20 baller , why dont the coach train him and include him in Bd t20 squad ? Masrafe is a great baller originally but now he is not what he used to be and I think he would be too expensive and cost us the game.

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 22:29 GMT

Hey, this is T20 man! No.1 or No. 10 doesn't matter. Even Afghanistan from no where may have chance to win No. 1 . So beware. Anyone can become giant killers. So Sri Lankans keep your finger crossed until both matches are finished. N.B. Malinga is not a threat to anyone except for self Sri Lankans, since he gives more runs enabling opposition enough to win.

  • POSTED BY Herath-UK on | February 11, 2014, 21:01 GMT

No 1 Vs No 10 ! Will it incur any interest in many SL fans? I doubt it. I hope SL will stick with Prasanna, being a spinner on BD conditions and a good hitter to be used up the order if required. Better to use both him & Dilruwan if they need to test the better one for the T20 on these conditions.

  • POSTED BY Htc-Android on | February 11, 2014, 19:59 GMT

@LIONS_ROARR. You forgot Malinga also got a half century in Australia.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | February 11, 2014, 19:06 GMT

@ bootlicker. India was slaughtered before and after the 1983 world cup by the west Indies. Still India beat WI 2 out of 3 matches in that world cup, can Bangladesh do that to any eventuality good team? forget SL.

  • POSTED BY LIONS_ROARR on | February 11, 2014, 19:01 GMT

LOL 9 out of 11 SL players are recognised batsmen. Yes i included Kula coz he has has 3 half centuries to his name including one against Aus in Aus.

  • POSTED BY bootlicker on | February 11, 2014, 17:04 GMT

If BAN can beat SL in T20, there is a strong possibility BAN to become the world champs of T20 next month. If SL thrash BAN heavily it will be super practice session for SL to lift the T20 cup this time whoever come to the final

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 16:31 GMT

it is good news for both teams, and i am a srilankan fan. my 11 should be 1 kusal 2 dilshan 3 sanga 4 mahela 5 chandimal 6 mathews 7 angelo perera 8 thisara perer 9 senanayakke 10 kulasekara 11 malinga we have 10 batters i team kusal and dilshan must fire first 6 overs and no wicket 6-10 8 runs pere over ids good and 11-16 if srilanka get good partner ship should be 145 more runs and mathes thisara perera is very talanet in 17- 20 overs sl should be 200 plus runs on the board. only poor chandimal is struggling in his batting lets hope he can recover . and bowling unit malinga 4 overs kule 4 overs senanayakke 4 overs mathews 3 overs 2 overs thisara perera 2 angelo perera 1 dilshan or no bowling foe dilshan mathews angelo perera and thisara all 8 overs lets hope sl won the toos and bat first and big win go lions go no chances for tigers hahahaha

  • POSTED BY jerryman on | February 11, 2014, 15:43 GMT

Good luck SL . Hope Angelo perera gets a chance . Since Dilshan is playing , sl can go in with one spinner in Senanayake. A little surprised not to see dilruwan in the line up. He could play a cameo .. Hoping Dilshan and Kusal P can get off to a flyer.; . T20 not much room for error and Malinga finds his form especially at the death overs

  • POSTED BY Masking_Tape on | February 11, 2014, 15:23 GMT

Why isn't Zia playing?? He should be playing T20 instead of anything else. Funny how they try him for test but not for T20!

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 15:21 GMT

SL are clear favorites and will take the series 2- 0. BD doesn't have the Bowling firepower to defend nor a string of power hitters to chase a total. SL should score 200+ on this flat chittagong pitch.

Thisara Perera should bat at no.7, He needs more deliveries to face rather than just an over. Chandimal should bat at no.3.

  • POSTED BY on | February 11, 2014, 13:30 GMT
