Sri Lanka in Bangladesh T20I Series - 1st T20I

Bangladesh v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 2 runs

Mithun Ali has the gloves for Bangladesh. First ball coming up. Mashrafe's got it in his hand.

OMAR FARUK: "no Mominul & Mahmudullah two very good player are not playing in this game it is very bad desiition because cricket fan not showing this two player action i hope we are come back next game"

Some people pointing out there are three possible keepers (four if you include Dilshan) in the SL team. They also bat down to no. 9. If only the Sri Lankan judicial system could be as balanced as this Twenty20 team.

Ten minutes to go, so why don't you while away nervous pre-match moments by reading Isam's preview.

Ray: "When Rahim got injured, Bdesh was playing without a full time keeper in a 5 day game. Now they're playing with 2.5 keepers in a 20 over game. A backup for a backup for backup. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to our selectors." Maybe they will play one keeper and a long-stop, to discourage the dilscoop. Probably not though.

A couple of you stating there is no way Priyanjan could be playing, because he's not in the Twenty20 squad. Tough to argue with that logic. Well done.

Peter : "woww sl have really loaded up on the bowlers wud have given Angelo Perera a run tbh considering SL have Mathews and Thisara as other bowling options" Good point. I count eight decent bowling options in that XI.

Neither Ashan Priyanjan nor Angelo Perera are playing, which is a shame for SL fans who were hoping to catch a glimpse of some exciting young talent. With the World Twenty20 firmly in sight, the visitors are trying to get their top team humming.

Sri Lanka: 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (capt and wk), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Nuwan Kulasekara, 8 Sachithra Senanayake, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Seekuge Prasanna, 11 Lasith Malinga

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque (wk), 3 Shamsur Rahman, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Nasir Hossain, 6 Mithun Ali,7 Farhad Reza, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Arafat Sunny, 10 Masrafe Bin Mortaza (capt), 11 Rubel Hossain,

Sachira: "It's Perera time, get ready tigers, battle begins.." More Perera ambiguity. Come on guys, this is getting sloppy.

Dinesh Chandimal says he would have fielded first as well. Feels 140 is about par on the surface.

Mashrafe says Bangadesh are bowling because Bangladesh like to chase. Left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny is debuting, as is Mithun Ali, who is a wicketkeeper-batsman.

Bangladesh have won the toss and will field first.

Habibullah baha: "Wonderful beginning. Updates are excellent. More statistical figure will be entertaining. Let us wish someone from Bangladesh to score a ton. thanks." Kumar Sangakkara is 1 away from scoring his 500th run of the series. Is that good enough?

Zeeshan Mahmud: "There is also another one. Um-perera. As in umperaras giving decisions against Bangladesh." Zeeshan obviously still hurting over that Nasir Hossain dismissal in the second Test. It'll heal. Give it time.

Good weather at the ground, says Isam. We're standing by for toss and team details.

There has actually been a Perera epidemic around Sri Lanka cricket in recent years. I can think of two more prominent Pereras: left-arm seamer Vimukthi Perera and cute-as-a-button offspinner Akila Dananjaya (Perera). Anyone else? I'm sure there's more. Oh, Dilruwan Perera, of course.

Mohammad Isam, our man at the ground, chimes in with this: Huge crowd waiting outside and the ground is being filled up. There's a long queue outside, and promises to be a big crowd.

Lloyd : "we can see good fight between tigers vs lions . Bangladesh are playing really good cricket on their soil and Sri lanka is no.1 T20 team for long time . I believe Perera will score his first ton against Bangaladesh today . good luck for both team . " You're going to have to be more specific Lloyd. There are three Pereras in the SL squad.

Welcome to our coverage of the first Twenty20 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Chittagong. The approach to this match has been dominated by drama. Tamim Iqbal quit the Bangladesh vice-captaincy, ostensibly to focus on his batting. On the Sri Lanka side, Mahela Jaywardene returns home after re-splitting the webbing on his left hand.

0.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, 2 runs, short-of-a-length on Kusal's legs. He turns it in front of square on the on side, for a couple.

0.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, bludgeoned! Mashrafe fires this wide, back-of-a-length. Kusal gets set and bashes this over mid off area to the straight boundary.

0.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, fuller, closer into the stumps. This is turned away to third man for a single.

0.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dilshan, no run, full, pitching on middle stump, Driven to midwicket, where it is fielded cleanly.

0.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dilshan, no run, full, pitching outside off stump. Dilshan doesn't bother moving his feet, but drives it somewhat gently to cover

0.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Dilshan, OUT, gone! Ambitious shot when you're not yet off the mark. Dilshan tries to play the over-the-shoulder scoop to Mash, but the bowler has slowed it down. It pitches around middle, Dilshan misjudges the pace, and it crashes into middle and off. Big strike first over. The crowd is delirious.

1.5

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, no run, shuffles forward again, struck on the pad again. Gazi appeals but he's too far down the track

2.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, no run, length outside off stump, Mash beats a booming drive

2.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, doesn't beat the drive this time. Crunching stroke from Perera as Mash pitches it up. The ball goes screaming through cover-point

2.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, 2 runs, shorter and wider. Kusal is not slowing down. Tries to pull this over midwicket, but doesn't get much power into the shot. Still gives him two

2.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, no run, length on off stump, driven to cover. Thought of a run, but decide against it

2.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball again, driven wide of mid off

Mustafa: "CTG ground dont disappoint BD in terms of Match result & Crowd Support. Can i know how is the crowd?" Looks pretty raucous.

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, no run, length on the pads, Chandimal turns it straight to short-fine leg, but no time for a single

3.1

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, beautiful placement. Kusal fetches this from way outside off stump and gets it in between square leg and short fine leg. He motors on

3.2

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, and again. This time Gazi pitches on middle stump, meaning Perera can get even more power on the shot. Through that same gap behind square leg again.

Deep square leg goes out now.

3.3

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, this time he goes through wicket. Strides down the pitch, and blasts this through midwicket. Super shot, again very good placement. This guy has some eye!

3.4

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, four in a row. Probably the best shot so far. Down the pitch again. This is hammered over midwicket, one bounce and to the fence. Where does Gazi go now?

3.5

Sohag Gazi to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, just a single this time. Length ball on the legs, Turned behind square.

3.6

Sohag Gazi to Chandimal, 1 run, Chandimal gets off the mark with a single to long on, off a fullish ball

End of over 4 (18 runs) Sri Lanka 39/1 (RR: 9.75)

Mezbah Uddin: "Not only in Chittagong but also other venues become crowded when it is Bangladeshi match against Big guns. " Having just spent two weeks covering cricket in Bangladesh, I can categorically say Bangla fans are the best I've encountered anywhere in the world. The team is very lucky to have that kind of support.

4.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, 1 run, length on off stump. Chandimal squirts this wide of midwicket and hands the strike over to Kusal.

4.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, full, pitched outside leg, Kusal just pushes this square on the leg side, into a gap

4.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, SIX, Chandi is not content to let Kusal have all the fun. That is a massive strike, first of the match. Having promoted himself, he launches a full delivery over wide mid-on. Will give him some confidence

4.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, FOUR, some luck now. Mash pitches it short-of-a-lenghth. Chandi plays a sort of ungainly cut. The ball takes an outside edge and flies where first slip would have been.

4.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, FOUR, super shot. Mashrafe pitches wide and full, Chandi gets low and crashes it through the covers, all along the ground.

4.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Chandimal, 1 run, fullish again, on the stumps. Flicked to midwicket, who has to do a bit of work, allowing the single

End of over 5 (17 runs) Sri Lanka 56/1 (RR: 11.20)
LD Chandimal    17* (7b 2x4 1x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-31-1

The promotion to no.3 doing wonders for Chandimal's T20 batting. Early days, but I don't think I've seen him bat like this in the shortest format. Rubel steams in.

5.1

Rubel Hossain to Chandimal, no run, length ball on off stump, crunched straight to cover

5.2

Rubel Hossain to Chandimal, no run, and just as I praise him, he comes down the pitch and plays an ungainly swipe to a short-of-a-length ball. Misses.

5.3

Rubel Hossain to Chandimal, no run, cuts him in half with a short ball. Chandimal doesn't connect with the pull

5.4

Rubel Hossain to Chandimal, no run, good stuff by Rubel. Angled into off stump, length ball. Chandimal is less ambitious, but he can't push it past midwicket.

5.5

Rubel Hossain to Chandimal, 1 run, short, gets the pull this time, but there's a deep backward square-leg to clean up the aerial stroke

First comparison between Kusal and Sanath Jayasuriya by the commentators. Let's keep tally.

5.6

Rubel Hossain to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball, driven to mid off and the batsmen scramble one.

End of over 6 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 58/1 (RR: 9.66)

Sakeeb Ferdous: "I can understand how much pain is endured. Cricket Ball― I feel sorry for you!" Shakib is on now.

6.1

Shakib Al Hasan to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball outside leg stump, no turn. This is nudged around the corner to short-fine-leg

6.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Chandimal, no run, floated up wide of off stump, Chandi chops down, but it's straight to point

6.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Chandimal, 1 leg bye, slow again, Chandimal comes down the pitch and can't get anything more than pad to it

6.4

Shakib Al Hasan to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball on the pads, clipped square, thought of a second, but it's not there

6.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Chandimal, OUT, he hadn't played a decent shot after I talked him up, and he now perishes, holing out to long off. Chandimal ran down the pitch and tried to smash it for six, but he didn't have enough power in the shot. Fielder at long on leaps and takes it just inside the ropes.

LD Chandimal c Farhad Reza b Shakib Al Hasan 18 (24m 15b 2x4 1x6) SR: 120.00

6.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Sangakkara, 1 run, slow again, pitched on middle, straightening. Sanga goes back and pushes it wide of midwicket

End of over 7 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 62/2 (RR: 8.85)

MDKJ Perera    42* (23b 7x4)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-2-0

7.1

Rubel Hossain to Sangakkara, 5 runs, oh, so close to being a wicket, but he gets five for that instead. He drove a full ball straight to mid off and took off for a single. Mash at mid off took a shy at the stumps and would probably have run him out if he hit. Instead it goes for four overthrows

7.2

Rubel Hossain to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length outside off stump, opens the face to get it behind backward point

7.3

Rubel Hossain to Sangakkara, no run, first bouncer of the day, well directed. Sanga ducks it

Las: "Guys like Chandi needs a serious mental overhaul. Kusal is going at great guns and all Chandi needed to do was to rotate the strike. "

7.4

Rubel Hossain to Sangakkara, FOUR, ugly shot, but well worth it for Sanga. A length ball on middle is muscled over straight-ish midwicket, and all the way to the fence. Played that shot a lot in the last Test

7.5

Rubel Hossain to Sangakkara, 1 run, length outside off, Sanga just fends this wide of cover, and this is a comfortable single

7.6

Rubel Hossain to MDKJ Perera, 4 leg byes, another good bouncer, only Kusal doesn't duck it. He tries to hook and gets it in the side of the helmet. The ball deflects past the keeper and speeds away to the fine-third man boundary.

End of over 8 (15 runs) Sri Lanka 77/2 (RR: 9.62)
MDKJ Perera    43* (25b 7x4)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-13-0
KC Sangakkara    11* (5b 1x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-3-1

8.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Sangakkara, OUT, oh what a catch! It takes something special to dismiss Sanga at this ground, and Nasir Hossain provides just that. Sanga rocks back and plays that straight-ish pull that brought him about a billion runs in the Test match here. But this time, Shakib has got a man out there and Nasir sprints full tilt to his right about seven metres in from the fence, then throws himself to intercept the ball mid air.

KC Sangakkara c Nasir Hossain b Shakib Al Hasan 11 (7m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 183.33

8.2

8.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Prasanna, 1 run, length ball on the pads, Prasanna squirts this off the inside half of the bat on to the on side

8.5

Shakib Al Hasan to MDKJ Perera, 2 runs, lovely, delicate late-cut dissects the men behind square on the leg side. Not much power though, so it doesn't go to the fence

8.6

Shakib Al Hasan to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball on middle, worked away of the pads straight of midwicket again

End of over 9 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 82/3 (RR: 9.11)

Sunny's first over in international cricket is imminent

9.1

Arafat Sunny to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball outside off stump, driven to long on for one

9.2

Arafat Sunny to Prasanna, 2 runs, fired flat on middle stump, and that's really good running to get two. He had hit that straight past the bowler, but sets off for a couple straight away

9.3

Arafat Sunny to Prasanna, 1 run, fullish again, a little more air. Driven to long off now.

9.4

Arafat Sunny to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length on the legs, turning in. Clipped away to the midwicket region, wide enough of the fielder.

9.5

Arafat Sunny to Prasanna, OUT, gone, Nasir gets another catch and Sunny gets a wicket in his first over. Sri Lanka sliding here after such a good start. Sunny gives it some air and pitches on middle and leg. Prasanna goes for a big slog sweep, but can't get enough elevation. Nasir is waiting for it at deep-backward square. Swallows it with ease.

10.1

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length outside off, muscled past the bowler for a single and that takes him to a fifty off 32 balls.

10.2

Farhad Reza to Mathews, 1 run, full ball on the stump, whipped away straight of midwicket. Mathews is off the mark.

10.3

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, fired way down leg stump. Wide called.

10.5

Farhad Reza to Mathews, 1 run, length ball on middle, Mathews swats it down the ground for one

10.6

Arafat Sunny to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, shortish, on off stump and straightening. Kusal chops it down to long on.

11.2

Arafat Sunny to Mathews, no run, very good shout. Hits Mathews in front of leg stump with a fullish, straight delivery. But it might be going down leg.

11.3

Arafat Sunny to Mathews, 3 runs, more overthrows. Mathews clips this without much power into a big gap on the leg side. They scamper two and an overthrow gives one more

11.4

Arafat Sunny to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, full, flighted and on leg stump. Kusal just wants singles for now. Gets it past midwicket

11.5

11.6

Arafat Sunny to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, wide down the leg side

12.2

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, 2 leg byes, hit on the pads, but it's pitched ouside leg and probably missing leg as well. The deflection doesn't go far, but Kusal is a livewire between the wickets.

12.3

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, SIX, a beautifully-struck pick up shot. That's just damn good timing. It's a full ball pitched on leg, Kusal whips this square over the leg side, and it lands about a metre beyond the ropes

12.4

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, no run, hits him on the pads with a slower, length ball. But that's pitched outside leg as well.

12.5

Farhad Reza to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length ball outside off stump. Kusal drives on the up, all the way to long off

12.6

Sri Lanka will feel they fell short of what Kusal's start promised. Bangladesh caught really well through the middle overs, and that held the run rate back. Kulasekara's innings injected a little urgency towards the end, but Bangladesh won't be too unhappy with chasing 169. We'll be back with the chase.
