1st ODI: Bangladesh v Sri Lanka at Dhaka, Feb 17, 2014
Sri Lanka won by 13 runs
17 February 2014 - day/night match (50-over match)

2.45pm Time for the first ball with Kusal Perera on strike. Nine overs will be the first Powerplay

Dilesha: "Interesting team selection by SL. It's good youngsters getting the opportunity. But I feel we are a bowler short! We'll struggle defending this, unless SL take the maximum out of the depth in their batting line-up."

2.20pm Time for the toss: Bangladesh have won the toss and will bowl first.

Bangladesh XI: 1 Anamul Haque, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Al-Amin Hossain, 10 Arafat Sunny, 11 Rubel Hossain.

Mushfiqur Rahim: The last two days have been under cover so there will be something for the bowlers early on. I won't be keeping.

So Bangladesh have left out Naeem Islam, Shafiul Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal. Tamim had a neck strain for the past week, so probably that played up. Anamul Haque will keep wickets.

Sri Lanka XI: 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Ashan Priyanjan, 6 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 7 Angelo Mathews (capt), 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Sachitra Senanayake, 11 Lasith Malinga

Angelo Mathews: We would have bowled first too, the wicket looks a bit damp. But it doesn't really matter, we have a strong line-up.

Sri Lanka have left out Suranga Lakmal, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Perera and Seekkuge Prasanna.

It's 2pm and the umpires are back, checking the pitch next to the playing surface of the day. Rod Tucker says play will start at 2.45pm (local time) and the match has been reduced to 43 overs a side. The first Powerplay will be nine overs and the second one of four overs.

Doc Shams: "Will be happy if there is no patient to visit this evening. Wanna enjoy the match staying relaxed!" You'll have to be patient in that case too, the match has been delayed by rain.

M Tazim Tareque: "@Chalana, it has not been the case always. Besides, ICC has lots of tournament hosted in Sri Lanka where it always rains as much as putting drainage system out of scope. "

Sajidul Islam comes to the rescue: "@Chalana: It has been raining in dhaka for almost 3 days. thats why its taking time...otherwise its a great field to play cricket!"

Chalana: "This is a venue for world T20. Rain stopped at 10.45 and play not gonna start untill 2pm. For a T20 wasting 3hours is not acceptable. Why is ICC approving such substandard grounds for a world event?" Chalana, Isam, who is at the ground, says: "I arrived in Mirpur at 11.45am, it was still raining at the time. When I entered the press box at around 12.15, the covers were being taken off."

We aren't done with SBNS yet, are we? Gaba: "Google says SBNS = Small But Necessary Schools, Bangladesh batters need SBNS to teach them about controlling their rage."

1.30pm Inspection update from Isam: Umpires Sharfuddoula and Rod Tucker are inspecting the areas around the pitch, checking for dampness. I must add, Mirpur's drainage system has been quite poor off late. The umpires are talking to Mushfiqur Rahim by the way, things don't look promising. Seems as if Tucker is telling him that there are wet areas next to the wicket."

Umpire Rod Tucker: "The next inspection is at 2pm, things have improved in the last half hour and hopefully it won't take long after 2pm for play to start".

More from Isam: The pitch just next to the main wicket has wet spots, I think they want that to dry up fast. It is really frustrating, because Mirpur had excellent drainage till two years ago. But BCB decided to change the grass twice, and they also changed some soil around as a part of an experiment. This is a result of those changes, drainage has been poor, the slope exists, but the water doesn't run off the main square quickly anymore."

Isam also replies to Fuzuly: "There's a thriving furniture business at the SBNS, and yes, it is small business network and you can do shopping there."

More good news from Isam who's at the ground: Both the teams are out training. And it's almost time for the inspection.

1.20pm Still 10 minutes to go for the next inspection, why not read what Mushfiqur Rahim had to say on the eve of the match. "We can beat any team at home", said the captain. Not to forget, Bangladesh have not lost a bilateral ODI series at home since 2011.

Some more full-forms for SBNS: "Small Business Network Shopping", says Fuzuly.

M Hasan Shahid: "In one sense delayed match for me! I can finish office at 6 and go home enjoy the full 2nd innings!"

Mehedi Hasan: "SBNS, Shere Bangla National Stadium. It's a geat stadium in Bangladesh and the world about Satellite Broadcast Network System? The Broadcast Network System is world class. And Bangladesh did broadcast the ICC world cup 2011 and upcoming T20 world cup 2014."

Biswas: "SBNS: Surely Bangladesh Negate Sri-Lanka"

Usama fassey: "@Thareq, SBNS?? The Society of British Neurological Surgeons?? (thats what I got when googled). When is the last time the ground saw some rain??" How about Satellite Broadcast Network System?

Ibrahim: "@Tareq: they have done a blunder with the outfield grass - otherwise this stadium has excellent drainage system. Hopefully they will turn the system around soon. "

And there's some good news: the sun is out, despite there being a lot of rain in the last two days.

Rokibul: "There has been raining in dhaka for almost 3 days. so condition will favor the seamers surely if play goes on."

"Why delay the toss? Surely a wet outfield doesn't affect the rate at which the coin spins." Rahman, that's because in case the overs are reduced, the captain winning the toss should make the decision accordingly.

Tareq: "The weather forecast says no more rain today at Mirpur that's really a good news for cricket lovers. But on another note, the drainage system at SBNS needs an overhaul. I mean come on, the rain has stopped at 10:45 and yet the ground is needs to be inspected at 1:30, horribleā€¦"

Mushfique Ahmed: "Statistics suggest, whenever the overs were reduced in an ODI match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the tigers went on to win it. Match is likely to get delayed in this case due to rain as well. Fingers crossed as a Bangladeshi fan! "

12.20pm It's a new day, new week and a new series. Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage of the first of the three ODIs between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, this one in Mirpur. A lot of interest has built up after the two last-ball finishes in the T20s, both of which Sri Lanka won. Bangladesh missed victories by a whisker and will look to achieve that today. The only deterrent for another thriller can be the weather. It rained in Mirpur in the morning and there might be a delayed start. We are waiting for a confirmation.

Our man at the ground, Mohammad Isam, says the covers are being taken off and it is slightly clear in Mirpur right now. No rain in the air for now but the water on the covers suggests there was a heavy shower, which means the toss has been delayed.

12.32pm And Isam tell us that the umpires are inspecting the ground and the next inspection will be at 1.30pm, so the toss is at least an hour away.

Not an issue, you all can read Isam's preview here till the groundsmen do their work.

And Daniel Alexander kicks off the comments: "Two last ball finishes in T20I and a thrilling one-wicket win by the U-19 boys, hope the ODI series will be a cracker too. Exciting week for we Sri Lankans."

5.40pm Who would have thought Sri Lanka would play 40 overs after being 67 for 8? Rubel Hossain and Al-Amin Hossain built the pressure with early wickets and the spinners cashed in later on. Sri Lanka would have been bundled within 100 had it not been for Thisara Perera's career-best 80 not out. Not to forget the contribution of Senanayake's 30 in their stand of 82. Can Sri Lanka defend it now? We'll be back within half an hour for the chase.

Umar Farooq: "A remarkable effort by Perera. Truly outstanding. He has given the lankans a fighting chance here. You've got to feel for Prera missing out of his maiden ton. Lets hope Malinga and company get some magic going and give us a enteranting and fighting 2nd innings from Bangladesh. "

Rhid: "finaly i can go for lunch~!"

James: "180 isn't a great score, but it's an awful lot more than either team would have expected at 67/8. SL will go into the interval the happier team."
