Teams: West Indies

Lendl Simmons will replace his fellow Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies opener Adrian Barath in the squad for the two Tests in Bangladesh.

Barath suffered a hamstring injury during the first ODI in Mirpur and played no further part in the three-match series, which West Indies won 2-1. He will remain with the team in Bangladesh and continue his rehabilitation.

Simmons was in impressive form during the limited-overs leg of the tour, scoring 202 runs in two ODIs and 23 in the Twenty20. He did not play the final ODI in Chittagong because of a minor back problem.

He was in the side for the two home Tests against Pakistan in May, and started the Test series against India as well before being dropped for the third match. Simmons averages 16.21 in the seven Tests he has played but says this opportunity comes at the right time since he is in form

"I'm playing very well and feeling quite comfortable and confident," he said. "I had a good ODI Series so the aim is to kick on and get some big scores in the Test Series as well. This is a chance for me to put everything right and look to cement a spot. It's a matter of concentrating hard. When I get a start I know I have to look to build on that. I have made some big scores at first-class level so I know that in the long version of the game you have to be patient and build a foundation."

During the ODI in Chittagong, West Indies' batsmen were found wanting on a turning pitch and were bowled out for 61. The first Test will be at the same venue, beginning October 21, and Simmons said he was ready for the challenge the pitch would pose.

"Watching the pitch here in Chittagong, it is quite different to the ones we played on in Dhaka. In Dhaka you were able to play your shots a lot more freely. The one here was quite slow and the ball was gripping a bit on the surface. On this pitch you have to be very watchful and patient. The key is to get a start and once you get in you can't give it away. That will be my focus."

Squad: Darren Sammy (capt), Carlton Baugh, Devendra Bishoo, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Shane Shillingford, Lendl Simmons.

@metman:baugh has never scored century in test whereas ramdin hs is 166 he is even bettet player of spin than baugh

The major problem is in the opening dept. And this is vital in all formats of the game, moreso test cricket. However Gayle will soon be back & that will bring some relief WI & Sammy. Someone will have to partner Simmons at the top. Our bowling is fine, with Samuels performing with both bat & bowl. W/keeping is solid & brilliant at times. Bravo jr will have to improve & do so quickly. Sammy is a concern but not a very immediate one. A few weeks will determine how concern. By and large the team should pull through. Hope so!

why to take sammy as captain make ramdin as captain give chance for roach to make team balance

Posted by cyborg on (October 20, 2011, 0:50 GMT)

Well let's see how kraigg brathwaite and keiron Powell get along at the top of the order , I find it unfortunate Andre russel and barath aren't playing that first test , glad Fidel is is there , Lendl Simmons looks good , team looks a good outfit , I'll be watching with intrest , let's go shiv, Sammy is a good leader , make gayle proud , contact him for advice and let Gibson consider his entry back into the team

Yea lets leave out a player who has two triple centuries, why not?

I keep hearing this bash Sammy song……what I don't hear is anything about the batting...Adrian Barath to date has not lived up to his potential and is always hurt, Darren Bravo should be dropped he is not making runs and is one of the worst fielders in cricket. Sammy is the best person to lead this team, Justified by him taking wickets and proving himself a capable tactician and one of the best fielders in any form of cricket. Do you really want to have Ramdin as captain? Nonsense! WI is playing a much better brand of cricket under Sammy and Coach Gibson and they are winning…….Before Sammy took over when last did anyone give WI a chance to win.

It behooves me that the fact that Sammy is bowling all-rounder, who so far has justified his place by taking wickets and proven himself a capable tactician (not unlike Shaid Afridi) is lost on many people. Calling for Ramdin to take over the captaincy is ludicrous, I have seen nothing to indicate that his batting has improved since the last time he was dropped. The only thing the team is missing in a consolidator in the middle order.

Posted by delboy on (October 19, 2011, 17:49 GMT)

@Metman you've ask one rhetorical question after the next. When Sammy is on the BENCH Ramdin is captain. In the absence of Nash, who do you propose lead the team? It might also be that the WI are beginning to see sense in taking an extra specialist keeper rather than have to fly one out at short notice. I do not agree with the suggestion of Simmons keeping wicket with his back issues let him focus on opening. I also would not open with Simmons and Samuels no matter how well they bat together, should one of them fail the line up becomes too brittle. I would have Shiv, proven ability to see off opening bowlers and Simmons open, moving experience up front. This would allow Samuels to come at 3, with the inexperienced Edward dropped down to 5. By putting too many inexperienced players in the line of fire (i.e. when the opposition bowlers are fresh, ball new) you are asking to be bowled out cheaply. Too many EXPERTS pick a team in isolation of the opposition's plans and capabilities.

1 Kirk Edwards, 2 Kraigg Brathwaite, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Lendl Simmons, 6 Denesh Ramdin, 7 Kemar Roach, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Shane Shillingford, 11 Ravi Rampaul. Sammy is there only as captain. If I could Fidel Edwards would be in this team ahead of Sammy and Kemar or Fidel asked to play as the all rounder. 5 specialist batsmen, a keeper, two spinners and 3 fast bowlers. Just can't understand the continued situation with Benn, Taylor and Gayle. What is the matter with Andre Russel?? Select the best team and then appoint from that team the best candidate as captain. The one that smiles need to go and wipe the smile off his face especially after the last game! How much longer are we to wait for the best available players to be put together at the same time? Still will remain a WI fan inspite of this mis-management and hugh egos ruining our team and individuals. Good luck WI

@rameshrams 567 ! And were'nt you all doing the same thing with Carlton Baugh after just one failure ?@delboy ! I didn't asked,' why are there 2 keepers in the team' !A team,in this case is 11, is selected from the squad !In the past the WI used to take Ramdin as the lone keeper on tours which included 5 ODIs,and 3 tests.,and players do get injured !Furthermore, one would expect 2 keepers on a tour with 5 ODIs,and 3 tests, than on a tour with just 2 matches.

Posted by   on (October 19, 2011, 16:14 GMT)

wi should select a balanced team.four specialist bowlers (sammy not included, cant make team)1 allrounder (samuels)wicketkeeper and five specialist batsmen(sammy not included). this team will compete with anyone, bur brain dead wicb and selectors is unable to get this right.

@ delboy that's why it amazes me that Sammy is still Captain of the side. He isnt contributing with the bat, he repeatedly drops catches especially off Roach's bowling. its not like he's a superstar in the bowling or captaincy dept either. He isnt even in ICC ranking of top 10 allrounders. Gayle & Bravo Sr are ranked 8th & 9th yet cant make the team. Yes he restricts the scoring to an extent and takes a couple wickets now and again but the fact is he is a liability we should not have to & can't afford. Bravo's fielding is inexcusable but he is still younger and more inexperienced than Sammy whose dropped catches are a key reason why we lost both home series during the summer. Both batsmen he dropped went on to make centuries Umar & Dravid. In fact The BCCI should thank Sammy for giving Dravid the reprieve that made him regain his form & confidence or else maybe they would have been embarrassed both in the Caribbean and even more so in England.

I wonder if the coach captain & selectors will use their observation skills and tactical acumen in setting up the team. Its Obvious that Simmons & Samuels bat well together so they should open the innings. that should be a much more stable opening partnership than Kieron & Lendll. Keiron can bat down the order with Edwards @3, Bravo @ 4,Shiv @ 5 , Powell 6, Baugh / Ramdin 7, Rampaul 8, Sammy 9, Fidel 10 and Bishoo 11.

The uninitiate needs to be educated the ALL cricketers MUST be capable of fielding, this discipline includes catching. Some retire without ever learning how to BAT, likewise some BATSMAN would never consider the art of bowling as a strength. At the early stage of a players involvement it MUST be emphasized that it is not good enough to get by in a team sport when your ONLY contribution is your BATTING or BOWLING. Confidence and technique plays a great part which over time affects the player psychologically. He first has to learn how to watch, judge and position himself (not being sexist this applies to HER also) in order to effect a catch or just field a ball. Darren obviously born in the Caribbean is one of the typical kids who was never out at ketch hi shubby, so he never had to field. Batting is his strength. He need extra fielding time not being be-littled. I'm sure Mr Courtney Walsh with batting which amused the world over is remember simply for one thing. He could also field.

@mteman:you should not decide ones batting by single innings ramdin will be upcoming captain for wi

Posted by delboy on (October 19, 2011, 12:19 GMT)

@Metman - what is listed is the SQUAD not the TEAM, players do get injured.

Posted by Metman on (October 19, 2011, 11:28 GMT)

Why 2 keepers for just 2 test matches ?Why was Ramdin recalled ?The way he got out in the last ODI shows that he still CANNOT BAT !Simmons should have kept wicket in the ODIs,and now the WI should have him in the tests, batting down the order.Darren Bravo should have been sent to the HPC ,to learn how to field and catch under the guidance of Carl Hooper, and whilst there,he should have a talk with the greatest batsman of all time,Garry Sobers,on how to bat !

Posted by acrawford78 on (October 19, 2011, 11:27 GMT)

Yeah Sammy is a passenger. His batting lacks technique big time, all bottom hand and there are better bowlers. Baugh is good keeper doesn't drop much.

Posted by delboy on (October 19, 2011, 10:21 GMT)

@VivGilchrist with Sammy rightfully out of your 11 I would go for Ramdin as captain and wkt. His bowling is better than Sammy's (He does not) I would also bring in Dwayne Smith ahead of Fidel. Fidel needs cricket and should be playing in the domestic fixtures his one game on recent trip to England proved that.

Posted by delboy on (October 19, 2011, 10:06 GMT)

@tanstell87 make your suggestions on the basis of a balance team capable of winning a cricket match not one to represent Barbados at the olympics only to find that a few are disqualified.

Posted by VivGilchrist on (October 19, 2011, 9:58 GMT)

Boy, wouldn't Gayle and Taylor be handy now?.... 1 Gayle 2 Simmons 3 K Edwards 4 Samuels 5 Chanderpaul 6 Dr Bravo 7 Baugh 8 Rampaul 9 Taylor 10 Bishoo 11 F Edwards. 2-0 WI.

Posted by Agunjhora on (October 19, 2011, 6:24 GMT)

Simmons, samuels and chanderpaul are key wickets. get them quickly, the match is yours tigers!

Posted by tanstell87 on (October 19, 2011, 6:12 GMT)

Good WI selectors not playing Dwayne Bravo,Pollard & Gayle....Pollard should not be played in ODIs too...they prefer club over country & WI selectors should find their replacements...Cooper who stole the show in CL T20 is ideal to replace Pollard in WI limited overs set-up...good luck WI from an Indian fan..!

Posted by tanstell87 on (October 19, 2011, 6:09 GMT)

WI should field Fidel Edwards & Kemar Roach together with Bishoo & Shillingford & leave out Sammy & Rampaul...

Posted by Sharat400 on (October 19, 2011, 3:32 GMT)

Wow what a team.. this is the Mantra to lose.... where are the batsmen??? atleast where is Dwayne bravo???
