West Indies in Bangladesh ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Bangladesh v West Indies

Bangladesh won by 8 wickets (with 180 balls remaining)

Right, at long last, here comes the start. Danza Hyatt and Kieran Powell are the openers, both not first-choice. Shafiul has the ball. Two slips await.

Sachit: "Strange to see Simmons getting rest, he should have got one last chance before Indian tour to face conditions in subcontinent as he is not there in test side. Also he showed great character in first 2 ODIs. Instead Bravo Jr could have been rested." Simmons is out with a back issue actually. Meanwhile, we hear the clouds are clearing up.

Toss: Sammy calls heads, but it is tails and Bangladesh choose to bowl. "The pitch was covered for over 17 hours, so there will be some assistance," says Mushfiqur. The hosts have made four changes to the side in search of a consolation win. Ashraful, Kapali, Razzak and Rubel are out. Shuvo, Shuvagoto, Shahriar Nafees and Nazmul Hossain are in. Bishoo, Rampaul and Simmons are missing out for WI. Martin, Brathwaite and Powell step into the XI.

1.25 PM Some portions of the outfield look like a tractor has been doing circuits on them! Chittagong has taken a beating from the rain gods by the looks of it. The latest update is that, as things stand, we will have a full 50 overs game delayed by 30 minutes. Toss at 1.30 PM and match start at 2.00 PM. All this is assuming it doesn't rain in the interim.

1.10 pm Will be a touch ironic if a wash-out saves the home team from a whitewash. Bleak outlook at the moment. The officials are out there with the captains. We hear the outfield is quite damp, and sawdust is being sprinkled around the boundary edges. Even a 15-30 minute shower could end the game prematurely. Meanwhile, rain is well off the agenda in hot hot Abu Dhabi where Sri Lanka are Pakistan are sparring away.

12.50 pm Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the third ODI in Chittagong. West Indies have already won the series 2-0 after two crushing victories in Mirpur.

The forecast for today is not great, I'm afraid. It rained on the eve of the match and this morning there was a light drizzle, which has stopped now. The covers were on until 12.30 pm and there will be an inspection of the conditions at 1.00 pm. The toss was scheduled for 1.00 pm so that is likely to be delayed. Thunderstorms are predicted for later in the day.

Remember, if you're in the US, you can watch the game live on WatchESPN.

0.1

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, full and straight to start off proceedings, it is solidly defended down the track.

0.2

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, back of a length, spongy bounce and a touch of inward cut. Hyatt stays in the crease and blocks to the off side.

0.3

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, wider of off stump, and straightens after angling in. Hyatt shoulders arms.

0.4

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, similar ball, this one dies from a length and Rahim takes it on the second bounce. Another leave.

0.5

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, another leave outside off as Shafiul goes fuller.

0.6

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, another full ball, Hyatt punches confidently to mid-on to end the over, a maiden.

Nazmuk runs in for his first game of the series. Two slips for Powell.

1.1

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, full ball on off stump, off-driven to mid-off.

1.2

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, back of a length outside off, Powell defends to the off side from the back foot. A touch of Chris Gayle to this man's mannerisms at the crease. Tall, languid, minimalist.. Wonder if he is also menacing.

1.3

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, no menace so far, lets a length ball outside off go through to Rahim.

1.4

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, stays low outside off as Nazmul works away on a length. Powell defends into the off side.

1.5

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, half an appeal for lbw, the ball landed outside leg though and hit Powell high as he missed the whip.

1.6

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, 1 run, better line, shaping away from leg to off again, but no seam movement. Powell works it through square leg for the first run.

"I can't accept the missing out of Rubel. He is the quickest among BD pacers. He is also a good fielder in the deep. Also performing better than Shafiul interms of line & length. Alok Kapali should have given another chance," says Mazhar.

2.1

Shafiul Islam to Powell, 1 wide, whippy and angled across Powell, who throws his bat at it without moving. He misses and it is called wide.

The rain may spare this match, but it has sucked the life out of this pitch, and made the outfield unimaginably heavy.

2.1

Shafiul Islam to Powell, 2 runs, well played. On the pads, and Powell places the whip well between mid-on and midwicket to get a couple. The ball barely travels across this outfield.

2.2

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, lets a ball very close to off stump go through to the keeper.

2.3

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, stays in the crease and laces a fuller ball gingerly, straight to point.

2.4

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, another leave. This is a sluggish start at many levels.

2.5

Shafiul Islam to Powell, 1 run, Powell times the straight drive well, but the ball slows down to allow mid-off to dive and stop.

2.6

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, Hyatt middles a leave - he was hauling the bat away, but a touch late and the ball went off the meat between point and the slips.

I have got around a 100 comments on the Bangladesh selections. Am not publishing any more of them. Let's chat about more interesting stuff, folks!

End of over 3 (4 runs) West Indies 5/0 (RR: 1.66)

KOA Powell    4* (11b)      Nazmul Hossain    1-0-1-0

Only one slip in place now. I don't see too many edges carrying on this slow-mo pitch.

3.1

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, Nazmul keeps it full on middle and leg, Powell punches it back down the track.

3.2

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, Powell inside-edges a forcing drive off the pads onto the pads and the ball goes nowhere.

3.3

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, 1 run, Powell gets a single this time, forcing the on-drive off the inner half to mid-on for a quickie.

3.4

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, no run, full pitched ball on off stump to Hyatt, who plays it crisply back down the track. In no hurry to get off the mark.

3.5

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, no run, opens the face this time as he presses forward, and steers defensively to point.

3.6

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, no run, beaten outside off. Not necessarily because the ball moved off the straight, but because Hyatt chose to play well inside the line.

End of over 4 (1 run) West Indies 6/0 (RR: 1.50)
DP Hyatt    0* (10b)      Nazmul Hossain    2-0-2-0
KOA Powell    5* (14b)      Shafiul Islam    2-1-4-0

4.1

Shafiul Islam to Powell, 1 run, Powell shuffles across and opens the face, looking to steer from very close to off stump. If the ball bent in a touch he would have been in trouble, but this time he gets a single into the covers.

4.2

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, Hyatt moves nicely into a check-drive into the covers, but doesn't place it.

4.3

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, beaten outside off fore the second time in three balls, is Hyatt. This time Shafiul gets the ball to straighten after angling in from wide of the crease, and Hyatt pokes away from the body.

4.4

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, no run, pretty poor technique from Hyatt. He gets half across, opens the face and dangles the bat in hope well outside off. If he middles it, it is likely to get a single at best. He misses, though.

4.5

Shafiul Islam to Hyatt, 1 run, Hyatt is finally away. Shafiul gets this to come in, Hyatt brings the bat down at the very last moment to get a single towards mid-on.

4.6

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, Shafiul swerves this one away from Powell, who is caught feeling for it well away from the body. Another miss.

End of over 5 (2 runs) West Indies 8/0 (RR: 1.60)
KOA Powell    6* (16b)      Shafiul Islam    3-1-6-0
DP Hyatt    1* (14b)      Nazmul Hossain    2-0-2-0

5.1

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, 2 runs, over-pitched outside off - on this pitch, that's a smart ball to bowl. The firm cover drive goes no where, it just succumbs to inertia on the soggy outfield, and they labour through for a couple. The fielder who put in the slide to stop the ball manages to scuff out some damp grass out, and the groundsmen promptly trot out with a bucket of sawdust.

5.2

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, no run, back of a length outside off, Hyatt shoulders arms.

Short cover walks into position.

5.3

Nazmul Hossain to Hyatt, OUT, and that's the end of Hyatt. A touch of frustration in the shot. Length ball, there for the drive outside off, but Hyatt seemed keen to smash it in the air instead of drive along the ground. He just plonked the front foot forward and heaved a touch early into the off side, but the ball took the outside edge to loop into the lone slip's hand.

Samuels is the new man in.

5.4

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, no run, Samuels likes playing on the back foot, and that's not a good idea on this pitch. His first ball stays low and he just about manages to keep it out as it darts in.

5.5

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, no run, this one angles in, Samuels is again on the crease and defends to the on side.

5.6

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, no run, well bowled Nazmul, gets the ball to nip away from Samuels who fishes from the crease.

End of over 6 (2 runs) West Indies 10/1 (RR: 1.66)
MN Samuels    0* (3b)      Nazmul Hossain    3-0-4-1
KOA Powell    6* (16b)      Shafiul Islam    3-1-6-0

6.1

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, Powell again moves into position and punches into the covers with assurance.

6.2

Shafiul Islam to Powell, FOUR, stop the press, a ball has reached the boundary. Pitched up by Shafiul, Powell had width to work with and used the bottom hand to impart a nice thump. The ball sped through the covers and reaches the ropes.

6.3

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, even fuller, but straighter this time, and Powell plays it into the off side.

6.4

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, slower ball on middle and leg stump, Powell spots it and defends down the track. The bowler picks up and hurls the stumps down, even as Powell moves back into the crease, and to his right to stay away from the throw thanks to the new rule.

6.5

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, works a full ball on leg stump to midwicket.

6.6

Shafiul Islam to Powell, FOUR, another good stroke from Powell, gets nicely behind a length ball and drives smooth and fluent through wide mid-off.

"Is WI trying to compete with Srilanka's run rate? I thought they were playing different teams," wonders Shahzad.

End of over 7 (8 runs) West Indies 18/1 (RR: 2.57)

7.1

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, 1 run, Samuels is away, dabbing a ball outside off stump backward of point for a single.

7.2

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, 1 run, Powell check-drives to mid-off, was really a soft push, and there was enough time to scamper across for a single.

7.3

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, no run, Samuels' technique nearly does for him. Stays back to a length ball that gripped the surface and sat up, and ended up scooping it just to the left of the bowler. Very close to a return catch, that.

7.4

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, 1 run, again, moping on the back foot to a slow, length ball outside off. He manages to run this one off the face behind point for one.

7.5

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, pitched up to Powell who mistimes the on-drive.

7.6

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, half-volley on middle, and Powell plays the best shot of the day for no runs. He drives it right past the bowler and takes out leg stump at the non-striker's end. That ball was travelling, and would have reached the boundary if not for the timber obstacle.

End of over 8 (3 runs) West Indies 21/1 (RR: 2.62)

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, no run

Wide slip for Samuels.

8.2

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, no run, wide of off stump and straightening, Samuels leaves.

8.3

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, no run, another leave outside off, this time Samuels even gets forward.

8.4

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, 1 run, full and wide of off stump, Samuels eases it towards deep backward point for one.

Shafiul goes round the stumps.

8.5

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, gem of a delivery from Shafiul, gets it to come in, hit the seam and then seam away prodigiously. Powell had no chance of even edging that, too good for him.

8.6

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, ends the over with a quiet push to the off side.

End of over 9 (1 run) West Indies 22/1 (RR: 2.44)

9.1

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, no run, over-pitched outside off, Samuels can't time the drive despite being in such good form. Inner-edged onto the pads and rolls away to the off side.

9.2

Nazmul Hossain to Samuels, 1 run, full again, angled into the pads, and Samuels nudges it square for a single.

9.3

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, full ball on off stump, pushes into the covers off the front foot.

9.4

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, FOUR, poor ball, full and outside leg side, Powell happily smears the flick behind square for a boundary.

9.5

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, no run, over-pitched on off stump, firmly driven but straight to short cover.

9.6

Nazmul Hossain to Powell, FOUR, lovely stroke from Powell. Too full again, and well outside off, but on this outfield that doesn't always translate to a boundary. Powell invoked his inner Saeed Anwar and Arjuna Ranatunga to thump the cover drive with a strong working of the bottom hand.

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, 1 run, Samuels stays on the crease and pokes into the off side once again.

10.2

Shafiul Islam to Powell, no run, Powell edges a steer, and it goes on the bounce to the left of the widish slip fieldsman.

10.3

Shafiul Islam to Powell, 1 run, on the pads, Powell chips it off the pads to the on side.

10.4

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, no run, Samuels might rather be facing Garner at Perth. He's not liking this at all. Another play and a miss from the crease as Shafiul keeps it on a leash.

10.5

Shafiul Islam to Samuels, OUT, if you didn't see that coming, you're following the wrong sport. Samuels is on his way. Length ball outside off, Samuels again refuses to reach forward and just looks to carve it over the off side from the crease. No pace to work with, at all. He ends up spooning it to sweeper cover where Shuvo takes an easy catch.

Nasir Hossain comes on round the stumps.

11.1

Nasir Hossain to Powell, no run, speared into the pads, Powell stays back and looks to force to the leg side. Hit on the pads.

11.2

Nasir Hossain to Powell, OUT, what a stunner. Powell's gone to a piece of Muralitharanesque mystery from Hossain. Tossed up, curving in, pitched on leg stump, gripped, spun and beat the outside edge to hit off stump and leave the batsman completely befuddled. All similarities with Murali ended there, as Hossain celebrates with an ugly WWE gesture - the DX chop to be spedcific. The crowd seems to like it, though.

Slip in place, over the stumps. Pollard is not going to like these conditions.

11.3

Nasir Hossain to Pollard, OUT, Two balls back Nasir had no ODI wickets. Now he is on a hat-trick. Tossed up outside off and turning in, draws Pollard forward and he helpfully pats it back to the bowler at a perfect catching height. Windies in big trouble now.

Darren Sammy is in early today. Hat-trick ball with a slip and leg slip ...

11.4

Leg slip disappears.

11.5

Nasir Hossain to Sammy, 1 run, full again, Sammy drives down the ground for a single.

11.6

Nasir Hossain to Bravo, no run, Bravo gets forward to a flighted ball and covers the line to defend to the off side.

12.2

Shafiul Islam to Sammy, 1 run, inner edge, goes between stumps and pads towards backward square leg for one.

Very dark clouds coming in to witness Bangladesh's wicket-taking abilities.

12.3

Shafiul Islam to Bravo, no run, length ball outside off, Bravo doesn't play at it.

Slip is very wide.

12.4

Shafiul Islam to Bravo, OUT, If there's rain coming, West Indies are doing their bit to ensure it doesn't wash out the game. Bravo perishes now, to a lazy square drive away from the body as Shafiul plugs away on a length just outside off. The ball did nothing off the pitch, it didn't bounce much either and was dying alarmingly on Rahim who takes a very smart catch, low down.

Slip and short leg, as Shakib comes on.

13.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Sammy, OUT, whoa, another wicket. Sammy gives his critics more grist to work with. It was Shakib's usual fare, angled in from slightly wide of the crease and straightening from middle. Sammy played an appalling shot, plonking the front foot forward and looking to play well away from the pad with an angled face when he should have brandished straight bat. He misses, Shakib hits him flush in front, and umpire Reiffel does the rest.

"Here onwards can Bangladesh only play in Chittagong and skip Dhaka as a venue permanently," asks a hopeful Mashid.

Another slip walks in. What a situation to walk into on debut for Brathwaite.

15.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, 1 run, flighted ball on leg stump, leading edge taken as Carlos looks to work it to the leg side and he turns around in confusion to see it go down towards short third man.

15.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Ramdin, OUT, easy as they come. Shakib skids one along, straight in after landing short of a length on off stump. Ramdin's bat-pad gap was so huge as he played for the spin, you could have built a Dubai-standard mall in that space. The ball had the easy job of finding its way through and hitting the stumps.

18.2

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Brathwaite, 1 run, fuller ball, pushed past the bowler for a single

18.3

19.3

19.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, FOUR, full toss, and Carlos happily latches on with a well-timed whip past midwicket. West Indies inch towards 58.

19.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, OUT, 58 is still some way away and the Windies are nine down. They just can't play spin in these conditions. Shakib again sends in that straighter one that just skids along after landing on off stump. Brathwaite offered bat and pad in hope, but the ball missed the willow and headed for the foam. Plumb as they come, despite the big forward stride.

CR Brathwaite lbw b Shakib Al Hasan 11 (23m 20b 1x4 0x6) SR: 55.00

Two slips, leg slip, silly poiny and short leg. Bangladesh have 58 on their minds ...

19.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Martin, no run, full on middle and off, the No. 11 does well to dead-bat it.

End of over 20 (4 runs) West Indies 56/9 (RR: 2.80)
A Martin    0* (1b)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-0-11-3

21.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Martin, 1 run, over-pitched on off stump, it is dragged to mid-off for a risky single. The throw from Hossain wasn't great, Mushfiqur had to collect from a yard away and whips the bails off. A direct hit would have meant 57 all out.

21.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Martin, no run, Martin defends from the crease as Shakib tosses it up on off stump.

21.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Martin, OUT, West Indies have been shot out for their second lowest total. Shakib flights this on leg and gets it to turn, past Martin's optimistic heave across the line, and onto leg stump. They were 33 for 1 at one stage, and have collapsed in bizarre fashion here, against an inspired bunch of Bangladeshis. And what's more, Shakib has 150 wickets. Well bowled, champ!

The chase should begin in a moment. Stay tuned.

"Bangladesh spinners collectively: 10-1-21-7. Decent spell, that." Not bad at all, James.

"Sheesh! I was defending this WI outfit earlier in the week. Too late to retract?" You could say, Smudgeon. They lost the Twenty20 and are in a hopeless position here. On balance, Bangladesh seem to have competed well so far in this series.

     Shakib Al Hasan    5-0-16-4
KAJ Roach    0* (18b)      Suhrawadi Shuvo    3-1-2-1
