West Indies in Bangladesh Test Series - 2nd Test

Bangladesh v West Indies

West Indies won by 229 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Brathwaite and Powell are the openers today. The West Indies opening spot seems to be cursed on this tour. First Barath, then Simmons ... Will these two last the distance? Shahadat Hossain has the ball and runs in with three slips. I am Nitin Sundar, taking you through the day's action.

Hello and a warm welcome from Mirpur for the second Test. While we await the toss and team details, do check out the preview to this game. Written by one of our finest reporters.

The early news from Mirpur is that the hero from Chittagong, Elias Sunny, will not play. He has been down with dehydration and an upset tummy since yesterday. Suhrawadi Shuvo comes in, so it is a like-for-like replacement. More woes for the WIndies - Lendl Simmons is out with the back injury he sustained in Chittagong, while Ravi Rampaul misses out too with a hamstring injury. Kieran Powell and Kemar Roach are reportedly the replacements.

Mohammad Isam lets us know that there are very few lines outside, though its a weekly holiday. Which is quite strange since Bangladesh are Test-crazy. Meanwhile, Darren Sammy wins the toss and West Indies bat. Mushfiqur terms it a do-or-die match, so rest assured Bangladesh aren't playing for a draw. The pitch for this game was the one used for the T20 and the second ODI. Not a blade of grass on display, so the juice, if any, will be early.

0.1

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, starts with a very good length, dipping in from off stump, defended into the off side.

0.2

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, FOUR, Brahtwaite is away with a flowing drive into the covers. Shahadat pitches it up and a touch wide of off stump, in search of movement away from the bat. It shaped away a bit and swung nicely into the middle of Brathwaite's bat. Away from the body, but in full control

0.3

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, lets this one go outside off as Shahadat shortens the length marginally.

0.4

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, short of a length around off stump, defended from the crease.

The pitch has a near grey tinge to it.

0.5

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, on the pads this time, Brathwaite turns it softly to square leg.

0.6

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, good length to end the over, and a solid forward defensive.

Any Indian readers out here who attended the Metallica concert last night? I hear it was a top-notch show ...

End of over 1 (4 runs) West Indies 4/0
KC Brathwaite    4* (6b 1x4)      Shahadat Hossain    1-0-4-0
KOA Powell    0* (0b)

Rubel runs in to the left-handed Powell.

1.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, length ball angling across, left alone.

1.2

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, fuller, on leg and angling towards middle, defended from the crease.

1.3

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 run, stays on the back foot again as he defends a short ball to the covers for one.

1.4

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, Brathwaite stays on the backfoot now and defends.

Shuvo is the 62nd Bangladeshi to play Test cricket and probably the luckiest, says Mohammad Isam.

1.5

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, angled into the pads, worked defensively to the leg side.

1.6

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, stays put on the back foot and defends the last ball to the off side.

End of over 2 (1 run) West Indies 5/0
KC Brathwaite    4* (9b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-1-0
KOA Powell    1* (3b)      Shahadat Hossain    1-0-4-0

"7 wickets on debut, then a lot of juck food! Now stomach upset! Come on BCB, look after your guys," says Aryan. One slip vanishes early. Only two now.

2.1

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, 1 run, length ball on leg stump, defended to the leg side.

2.2

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, pokes a ball slanting into the pads to the leg side.

2.3

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, 3 runs, well played. Brathwaite gets a length ball on the pads and punches it pleasingly past mid-on for three. Good solid piece of timing.

2.4

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, 1 run, the pitch is already slower than Powell would like. He is early into an on drive and inner edges through square leg.

2.5

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, sharp bouncer, but too wide outside off to trouble Brathwaite.

2.6

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, late inward shape, but nicely negotiated by Brathwaite who pushes it wide of mid-on for one more.

End of over 3 (6 runs) West Indies 11/0
KC Brathwaite    8* (13b 1x4)      Shahadat Hossain    2-0-10-0
KOA Powell    3* (5b)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-1-0

3.1

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, short of a length to Brathwaite, who defends to the leg side.

3.2

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, pitched further up, defended with a reluctant forward push once again.

3.3

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, 3 runs, aha, chopped on almost. This pitch is slow, and the Windies openers are still grappling with the sluggishness. Brathwaite this time, early on a loose drive away from the body and the ball goes close to the castle before running away to fine leg.

3.4

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, Powell lets one go through outside off stump.

3.5

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, gets behind the line and defends to the off side.

3.6

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, Powell is resolute on the back foot as he defends again.

"Indians into Metallica? I'd never guess!" Hani, what is even more unguessable is what happened at the concert last night. Google for info.

End of over 4 (3 runs) West Indies 14/0
KOA Powell    3* (8b)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-4-0
KC Brathwaite    11* (16b 1x4)      Shahadat Hossain    2-0-10-0

4.1

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, bumper from Shahadat, Brathwaite ducks under it easy. It was whanged in too short.

4.2

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, tries to go very full this time, good variation, but it is slanted into the toes and Brathwaite deals with it confidently.

Shubho: "I find the whole concept of Indian heavy metal fans singing along at a Metallica concert with their heavy accents hilarious. I wonder whether the band was able to keep a straight face." Well, wannabe-ness is not necessarily an Indian phenomenon. Still, I spare a tear or three for the people who were cheated last night.

4.3

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, defends with a very straight bat. No sideways movement, at least not consistent.

4.4

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, FOUR, lovely stroke. The beauty of a straight drive, perfect for a Saturday morning. Over-pitched by Shahadat, Brathwaite comes down on it with a decisive straight bat and drills it straight past the bowler

4.5

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, 2 runs, slanted into the pads from outside off, defended away to the leg side for a couple. Nice touch on that shot.

4.6

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, hustles him with a bouncer to finish the over, Brathwaite ducks early. Good start this from the Windies.

Cancelled concerts aren't just an Indian phenomenon, either. Mohammad Isam lets us know that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan concerts were cancelled thrice in a month in Dhaka, as brought to our attention by Prothom Alo reporter Ariful Islam Roney

End of over 5 (6 runs) West Indies 20/0
KC Brathwaite    17* (22b 2x4)      Shahadat Hossain    3-0-16-0
KOA Powell    3* (8b)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-4-0

Wow, that was early. Shakib into the attack already.

5.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, tossed up outside off from over the stumps, driven well into the extra cover area.

Slip and short leg in place.

5.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, fuller still this time, Powell leans out to defend.

Carson sounds angry to me. "Can somebody tell me why WI continue to put their four least experience batsmen at the top of the order and leave Chanders and Samuels to bat at 5 and 6. by time Chanders come in they will be less than 50 with 3 wickets already down. By time Marlon comes in they will be less than 100 with 4 wickets down. How can the two senior batsmen play their natural games with such a silly batting line up. Push Samuels to # 3 and Edwards to # 6. Have the young bloods bat with the experienced fellows. That sounds like common sense to me. Then again that seems to be lacking with the entire WICB," he says.

5.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, plays back to a short ball straightening outside off. Defended into the mid-off area.

Round the stumps now,

5.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, angled into the off stump and straightening down the line, defended from the crease.

5.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, more air, Powell gets forward to smother.

5.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, worked off the pads off the front foot past short leg to end the over.

"For all those who were criticizing Braithewaite for his BLOCKOHOLIC batting, here he is slapping you all." That comment came from Ankit, and not Harbhajan Singh.

End of over 6 (maiden) West Indies 20/0
KOA Powell    3* (14b)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-1-0-0
KC Brathwaite    17* (22b 2x4)      Shahadat Hossain    3-0-16-0

6.1

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, slanted into the pads, worked defensively to mid-on. Brathwaite is always gentle towards the freebie on the pads.

6.2

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, back of a length around middle and off, Powell defends down the track.

6.3

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, every now and then Shahadat puts in a lot of shoulder into a heavy ball. Like this one, the angle was very good too, and Powell had to weave away from the line after thinking of playing it.

6.4

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, slanted across, well wide of off stump and it is an easy leave.

6.5

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, closer to off stump, but not enough to make Powell play.

6.6

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, another leave outside off from Powell as Shahadat plugs away outside off.

Hani is back: "I did.. I'm just..... WOW! You said they were cheated, I read it's postponed for 24 hours, doesn't mean they will get admitted tonight? And a F1 Race in India - Congrats!"

Well, there were 1000s of people who waited for the concert patiently from around noon yesterday. They sure were cheated, and will have to go through the same again. Btw, you can check out all the F1 developments on ESPNF1.com

End of over 7 (1 run) West Indies 21/0
KOA Powell    3* (19b)      Shahadat Hossain    4-0-17-0

7.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, flighted on off stump, Brahwaite defends.

7.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, straighter, and defended carefully from the crease.

Slip and short leg in place.

7.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run

7.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, pitched up on the pads, worked fluently straight to mid-on.

7.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, lunges out languidly to reach the flight and smother a ball on off stump.

7.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, gets forward again and defends into the covers.

Tahsin must be desperate to get featured on commentary feedback. "Here is the history of cricinfo," he says. "ESPNcricinfo (originally CricInfo) was launched in 1993 by Dr. Simon King, a British researcher at the University of Minnesota with help from students and researchers at universities around the world. It initially operated as a volunteer-based collective, and started life as a simple IRC bot. It was soon made available via Gopher as well, and with the advent of the Mosaic web browser in April 1993 became one of the earliest content web sites on the Internet."

End of over 8 (maiden) West Indies 21/0
KC Brathwaite    18* (29b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    2-2-0-0
KOA Powell    3* (19b)      Shahadat Hossain    4-0-17-0

The grunting Shahadat runs in round the stumps now.

8.1

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, offcutter landed outside off and going away. Powell lets it go.

8.2

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, short of a length outside off, another leave.

Ruddy: "Think of it in another way, if the youngsters make a very good start, Chanderpaul and Samuel can do even more damage. But if he youngsters do not give WI a very good start Chanders and Samuels can try to steady the ship some what"

Two slips and a gully.

8.3

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, angled in this time, defended to the leg side.

Aaand we have our first celebrity feedbacker for the day. And a dangerous man, at that. "Kraigg is basically diet chanderpaul...for the next five years....and Powell is a nightwatchman compared to Gayle, hes not even remotely good enough to be in the West Indies side," says the one and only Marsellus Wallace.

8.4

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, FOUR, the front leg up in the air, the knee bent, the batsman stands tall and pulls. Where have I seen that before from a Windies batsman? Oh yes, from a certain Mr. Gayle. Too short, easy pickings, easily played.

8.5

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, FOUR, full toss, a meaty full toss on the off and it's eased past extra cover, what a gift

8.6

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, lets a length ball outside off go through to the keeper.

End of over 9 (8 runs) West Indies 29/0

9.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, similar ball, a bit straighter, defends solidly down the pitch.

9.3

9.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, fuller and straighter still, Brathwaite turns it to the leg side

9.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, covers the line and defends a fuller delivery.

9.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, another slow, loopy ball on middle, defended down the pitch.

"Who do you think is a bigger grunter - Shahadat or Sharapova?" Towhid asks. I don't watch (or listen to) much tennis, so I'll let the others enlighten him on this.

End of over 10 (maiden) West Indies 29/0
KC Brathwaite    18* (35b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-3-0-0
KOA Powell    11* (25b 2x4)      Shahadat Hossain    5-0-25-0

Rubel is back on, with a wide slip and a gully. Over the stumps.

10.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, back of a length on off stump, defended to the off side.

10.2

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, opens the face and guides defensively towards point.

10.3

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, angled away outside off, another leave.

Bang_La: ""Oh yes, from a certain Mr. Gayle." I saw such shots many times from one forgotten batsman, Brian Lara. In fact it was his signature pull shot, if you would please unfreeze your brain" But this was a different version of the pull, and the batsman's height was a distinct feature.

10.4

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, shaped away outside off, Powell doesn't poke at it after leaning out.

10.5

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, back of a length now, curved away from Powell and he lets it go again.

10.6

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, wasted bouncer down the leg side, and Powell easily gets out of the way.

Eusha: "Shahadat's grunts give you an impression that he's bowling at 150 km/hr. In reality he's about 25 less than that! I find that amusing. Brett Lee generates more pace without grunting. I remember that Mahela once complained to the umpire about the grunting of Shahadat. Hilarious!"

End of over 11 (maiden) West Indies 29/0
KOA Powell    11* (31b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    3-1-4-0
KC Brathwaite    18* (35b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-3-0-0

11.1

11.4

11.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, Brathwaite is well forward as he defends from outside off.

11.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, lunges out again to defend a full ball.

Carson continues: "The WICB obviously has a plan to have a WI team be represented by the players from the High Performance Centre (HPC). Otherwise I cannot explain what Powell is doing in the test side opening. Look at the A team selected? No wonder they want to discard of Gayle and Chanderpaul in a hurry like they have done with Nash and Sarwan so they can make room for the HPC players seeing the HPC was the WICB's idea. It would really make them look good now wouldn't it?"

End of over 12 (2 runs) West Indies 31/0
KC Brathwaite    19* (38b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-3-2-0
KOA Powell    12* (34b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    3-1-4-0

12.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 run, short of a length on the hips, Powell nudges square for a single.

Eusha lets us know that "Shahadat's grunts are not as sexy as Sharapova's!"

12.2

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, back of a length on off stump, defended with a full face down the strip.

12.3

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, back of a length again, defended fluently into the covers. The ball has seldom missed the middle of the bat today, when the batsmen have played shots.

12.4

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, worked off the pads softly and it gives them enough time for a single before square leg runs in.

12.5

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, another pointless bouncer whanged in in his own half. Easily ducked under.

12.6

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 wide, this is an even worse bouncer. Rubel is losing the plot in a big way. Called a wide.

12.6

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, defends a length ball with an opened face towards cover.

"Victoria Azarenka is a worse grunter than both Shahadat and Sharapova. Her grunts are, well, you have to listen to it to have the, err, pleasure. Shahadat is the best grunter among male sportsmen all around the world," says Sharthak.

End of over 13 (3 runs) West Indies 34/0
KOA Powell    13* (37b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    4-1-7-0
KC Brathwaite    20* (41b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-3-2-0

13.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, tossed up on off stump, defended down the track.

13.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, on the pads, nudged to the leg side carefully.

13.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, short ball, Brahtwaite adjusts by rocking back and looks to guide square. Can't beat the fielder, though.

Slip and silly point in operation.

13.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, defended with bat and pad close together, but the pad is crucially inside the line.

13.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, leans out to defend a length ball once again.

13.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, short ball, hacked into the covers for no run. That'd drinks for the first time in this Test.

Vibhash: "Yesterday Greece's junk bonds got a hope of bailout. Today I see Shahadat's and Sharapova's name being used in the same sentence. May be 2012 is true."

Len Raine responds to Carson: "Kraigg Brathwaite has made bucket loads of runs playing kiddy cricket on a track better than a lot of roads in Barbados and finds himself in the West Indies team. Oh no no comments about that. Lets lambast the player from the so called smaller territories. Typical West Indians. Somethings never change."

End of over 14 (maiden) West Indies 34/0
KC Brathwaite    20* (47b 2x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    5-4-2-0
KOA Powell    13* (37b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    4-1-7-0

14.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, FOUR, the first ball after drinks produces only the second real edge of the morning. Shaped across the left hander, who has a leaden-footed prod at it well away from the body, and the nick flies away wide of the lone fly slip.

Now a second slip, plus the gully. The horse has bolted.

14.2

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, length ball angled across, this time Powell eases into a defensive push.

14.3

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 run, back of a length on the pads, worked to square leg with a turn of the wrists.

"These Windies batsman are taking Shakib apart here! How will he recover from this? 2 runs let through already, he's looking expensive," says a perceptive Damon.

14.4

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, pitched up outside off, Brathwaite now flows into a good-looking defensive push.

14.5

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, another one of Rubel's predictably amiable short balls. Well outside off, easily left alone.

14.6

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, FOUR, another edge. Poor shot from Brathwaite, flaps at a short and wide ball without getting the feet into any kind of position, and produces a laboured thick edge. It goes to the left of gully, who seemed to react late. Nafees was the culprit.

End of over 15 (9 runs) West Indies 43/0
KC Brathwaite    24* (50b 3x4)      Rubel Hossain    5-1-16-0
KOA Powell    18* (40b 3x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    5-4-2-0

15.1

15.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, speared on the stumps, once again defended.

15.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, 1 run, worked off the pads towards backward square leg.

15.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, 2 runs, arm ball, darts in late and Brathwaite is in a slightly perilous postion after propping the front pad across. He manages to dab it to fine leg though.

End of over 16 (3 runs) West Indies 46/0
KC Brathwaite    26* (51b 3x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    6-4-5-0
KOA Powell    19* (45b 3x4)      Rubel Hossain    5-1-16-0

16.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, FOUR, Rubel produces his third nick in seven balls, this time Powell gets a leading edge as he closes the face too early, but the ball safely bounds away through point to bring up the 50 run-stand.

16.2

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 run, too straight, nudged with control through square leg for a single.

Priyashrav: "Speaking of grunts, how can you not mention Shane Warne's epic grunts!" I was coming to that ...

16.3

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, back of a length outside off, pushed into the covers for a single.

In the Bangladesh side, the spinners get the wickets, but the seamers do the grunt work.

16.4

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, his fourth ball is invariably a bouncer. Powell ducks under this one.

16.5

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, and now a good bouncer, slanting away just outside off, and jumping up from short of a length. Powell had to stay out of the line as it zipped past.

16.6

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, gets bat on this one, hanging back in the crease and defending to the off side.

"@Vibhash: It's far better if you compare the inclusions of Stuart Carlisle and Saddam Hussain in the same sentence in the Match Preview for NZ v ZIM T20I," says Santosh. Wow, I must go and read that preview. Something tells me it was the work of Liam Brickhill.

18.3

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, Rubel's making things happen, the first appeal for lbw of the day. But the ball landed outside leg as Powell missed the turn to the leg side and was trapped on the back foot flush in front of middle. Good call from umpire Dharmasena.

18.5

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, length ball outside off, Brathwaite times the cover drive well but only gets a single.

Shahadat continues.

24.1

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, (no ball) 2 runs, the grunter oversteps now, and is redirected through backward point for four more. Brathwaite plays this wristy cut particularly well.

24.1

Shahadat Hossain to Brathwaite, 1 run, on the pads now, Brathwaite works it square for a single.

24.2

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, FOUR, crunchy! Powell whacks a short ball into the covers, sending it on its way with a touch of disdain. It was angling across, giving him room to work with, and Powell stayed back and tonked it on top of the bounce, without bothering much about foot work or follow through.

Round the stumps now.

WI were undone by a debutant left-arm spinner in Chittagong. Here's another. Shuvo comes on with slip and silly point.

26.1

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Brathwaite, 1 run, short ball on off stump, pulled straight to midwicket who concedes an overthrow. Not the best way to concede your first Test runs.

26.2

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Powell, FOUR, flighted outside off, Powell leans out and laces it through wide mid-off for an elegant boundary.

Len Raine: "Here are two more who had crabby techniques : Lambert/WICB & Lehmann/CA." We are slowly beginning to scrape the barrel now.

Gareth: "@Suneer. I disagree. Imagine how frustrating it must be to in form, have the backing of the entire nation, but not be picked due to a personal disagreement and a 'different direction'. "

28.5

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Powell, no run, short ball, he stays back and dead bats.

Talking of strange omissions, anyone remember Brad Hodge?

28.6

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Powell, 1 run, on the pads to complete the session, Powell politely turns a single square to make it West Indies' session, emphatically so.

There was no movement, very little spin and a lot of patience from the openers. Bangladesh's propensity to over-use the bouncer didn't help their cause either. We will be back in 30 mins, ie around 12.00 pm for the second session. Meanwhile, birthday boy Sid Talya's session report is here.

"Simon Katich is doing a Shoaib Akhtar," says Sumith. What?! Katich has now said he saw Tendulkar shivering as he trotted in to bowl his pies? You never know ...

Shakib will start off proceedings as Bangladesh seek their first wicket.

We are back then for the second session. I spent the break perusing some gems, none better than Dan Brettig's comprehensive profile of John Inverarity. Here it is. I am no expert, but I must say I like the way Australian cricket is heading after the Ashes debacle. Pity Indian cricket isn't learning any such lessons after their drubbing in England.

29.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, short of a length outside off from round the stumps, defended.

Slip and short leg in place.

29.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, straighter ball, worked from the crease to the leg side.

29.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, no run, short of a length, defended from the crease to the off side.

29.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Powell, 1 run, nudged off the pads backward of square leg.

29.6

This sounds like fun, from Ewan. "Is anyone watching the interview with former Bangladeshi Captain Khaled Masud Pilot from local commentator Chowdhury Jaforullah Sharafat? Rubel is back on now.

30.1

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, back of a length delivery angled across off stump, defended from the crease into the covers.

30.2

Rubel Hossain to Powell, FOUR, over-pitched on the pads, meat, drink and dessert for Powell who flicks pleasantly through midwicket for four. Early days yet, but I predict 400 for the West Indies on this pitch.

One widish slip and gully in place.

30.3

Rubel Hossain to Powell, no run, shaping across the batsman now, Powell covers the line as he defends to the off side.

"Brad Hodge has never gotten a fair go because his state cap is the wrong shade of blue. NSW players always have an advantage (unless they've grabbed Michael Clarke by the throat and told him what's what)," says Marcus. Really? Didn't Gilchrist, for instance, make it big only because he moved away from NSW?

30.4

Rubel Hossain to Powell, 1 leg bye, on the pads, Powell looks to flick again but can't get bat on it. A leg bye is taken.

30.5

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, no run, short of a length outside off stump, Brathwaite opens the face as he defends to the off side.

31.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, fuller and slower, nudged square without scoring intent.

31.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, another armer, Brathwaite didn't spot it as he hung back for the cut, and it may have hit the pad flap before the bat. He was outside the line though.

31.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, no run, fuller and straigter, sedate defence from Brathwaite.

31.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Brathwaite, 1 run, maiden 50 for Brathwaite, and he's played quite well here. Hacks away into the covers and scampers through for the single.

32.1

Rubel Hossain to Brathwaite, OUT, Brathwaite has thrown it away after doing the .. em .. grunt work. It is a shot he plays well, as we saw before lunch - the steered cut through point. But this ball was a little too wide for him to have to play at it. And it was through him faster too. He ended up guiding it to the right of Kayes at gully, who takes the catch well.

Smudgeon weighs in on the Kato issue. "Katto needs to watch what he says, people might start to think he's bitter or something! I would have thought after the press conference (in which he denied the throat-grabbing thing was an issue, mind you), he would have preferred to let his bat do the talking. Time to let it go, Katto." The best part of the Katich issue was this stunning headline yesterday, straight out of grate-central. "Kat lays claws on Pup" or some such.

36.4

Rubel Hossain to KA Edwards, FOUR, bouncer handled really well. That was well wide of off stump, and though Kirk was on the shot early, it took extra effort to control it and keep it down. He did really well to play it down through midwicket, rolling the wrists without compromising on the timing.

36.5

Rubel Hossain to KA Edwards, FOUR, another emphatic pull, but a garbage delivery from Rubel who angles the short ball at a pleasant pace into the body. Kirk kills it with a swivel pull behind square.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have hammered 54 for 0 in 2 overs against India in the HK Sixes tournament. Umar Akmal, the chief destroyer. I have no idea what he's doing in Hong Kong. Would have expected him to be in Dubai.

39.3

Shahadat Hossain to KA Edwards, FOUR, quicker and tailing into the pads, Kirk responds with a really gentle glance that sends the ball purring through fine leg. Poor ball, but played particularly well.

Jordan has a point here. "I know, Nitin, but we don't hear people complaining about Martin Love and Stuart Law not being given enough chances, despite their similar records to Hodge in first class cricket. Hodge was done for years ago. Katich, on the other hand, still has a couple of years left in him.

39.4

Shahadat Hossain to KA Edwards, 2 runs, the timing is getting even better from Kirk. Short and wide outside off, he waits patiently beside the line and dispatches it square with a gentle cut-steer.

39.5

Shahadat Hossain to KA Edwards, no run, a big grunting wasted bouncer short and well wide of off stump. Kirk leaves.

39.6

Shahadat Hossain to KA Edwards, no run, wasted down the leg side, Kirk can't get bat on it.

End of over 40 (6 runs) West Indies 125/1

End of over 41 (1 run) West Indies 126/1

41.1

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, length ball outside off from Shahadat, Powell lets it go.

41.2

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, short ball now outside the off stump, Powell doesn't fiddle with it.

41.3

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, no run, short and angling across, another leave.,

Smudgeon is getting to the end of his tether. "Apologies to Brad Hodge and Katto, but how often did Jamie Cox, Jamie Siddons, Michael DiVenuto, Martin Love, and other overlooked domestic performers whine about not getting a baggy green? Australia's strength has always been it's depth in domestic ranks, and because of that there will always be hard-luck stories...that doesn't mean we have to constantly hear about it."

Round the stumps now.

41.4

Shahadat Hossain to Powell, FOUR, lovely stroke. Powell stands tall to a length ball and somehow generates power on a back foot punch through the covers. The ball veritably pings off the meat of the blade and runs away on its errand.

KA Edwards    18* (38b 3x4)      Shahadat Hossain    10-0-53-0

Shahadat gruntinues.

Evan again. "@Muhammad, He did indeed. But his topic was kinda interesting today. He was discussing about why bowlers like Talha Jubair, Tapash Baisya, Enamul Haque Jr. are lost in history. Surprisingly, I did not know Talha was a the second highest wicket taker in the National league last season. Mr. Jaforullah was below average on the fun aspect today."

Shakib Al Hasan to KA Edwards, no run, defends another full ball on leg stump.

44.3

Shakib Al Hasan to KA Edwards, no run, Kirk could be in trouble here. Belated referral to the third umpire for a belated attempt at a stumping. Short and wide down the leg side, Kirk misses the sweep and the ball goes to Rahim. Kirk was lazy after the ball went through, and dragged his back foot out. Rahim was quick to notice and waited for the opportune moment before whipping the bails off. Kirk was lucky in that he didn't completely drag the foot out, and it was just in. A matter of millemetres. Safe.

Marcus: "In relation to Hodge, Katich etc., for a country which in its sporting culture is so hung up on tradition and sentimentality (as demonstrated by the Katich-Clarke stoush), the treatment of cricketers when dropped, often for the last time has been horrendous here in Australia. Hodge never really got a fair go. Katich was dropped after batting on one leg for his country in Adelaide. Or further back, Ian Healy played his last test match in Zimbabwe rather than being given a farewell at the Gabba. We have our Baggy Green, our singings of Under the Southern Cross and our Boxing Day Test, all sentimental traditions, but dump our heroes like that. Strange is it not?" Well, Katich was the one standing up for tradition in that particular stoush. And we know which way that went.
