West Indies in Bangladesh 2012-13 November 23, 2012

Sohag Gazi picked in Bangladesh ODI squad

Bangladesh have included batsman Naeem Islam, offspinner Sohag Gazi and fast bowler Rubel Hossain in the 14-man squad for the first two ODIs of the five-match series against West Indies, which begins on November 30. Fast bowler Shafiul Islam also returns to one-day internationals, having recovered from the shoulder injury he picked up while fielding in the Asia Cup in March.

Abul Hasan, fresh off his record-breaking century at No. 10 in the Tests, was also picked.

Success in the first Test against West Indies propelled Naeem, Gazi and Rubel into the squad: Naeem scored a first-innings century, Gazi finished with a match-haul of nine and Rubel claimed the wickets of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo on return from injury. Naeem is back in the one-day squad for the first time since playing against Pakistan in December last year, the same series in which Rubel too played his last ODI before picking up an injury.

Those who missed out from Bangladesh's last ODI assignment, the Asia Cup, include Nazimuddin, Elias Sunny, Imrul Kayes, Nazmul Hossain and Shahadat Hossain.

In his last appearance for Bangladesh, Sunny conceded 36 runs from three overs in the first match against New Zealand. Kayes had won a place in the Asia Cup squad after a good domestic season in 2011-12, but fell away again, much like Nazimuddin who had played the Asia Cup but had an ordinary time. Pace bowler Shahadat's nightmare performance in the Asia Cup final would have certainly played a part in his non-selection.

Both Bangladesh and West Indies will play a warm-up game each ahead of the series, and the board also announced the BCB XIs that will play these games.

Squad for the first two ODIs: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Naeem Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Sohag Gazi, Abdur Razzak, Abul Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Shafiul Islam.

BCB XI for Bangladesh practice game on Nov 27: Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Asif Ahmed, Marshall Ayub, Jahurul Islam, Elias Sunny, Farhad Reza, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Enamul Haque Jr, Soumya Sarker.

BCB XI for West Indies practice game on Nov 28: Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Asif Ahmed, Anamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Elias Sunny, Farhad Reza, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Enamul Haque Jr, Soumya Sarker.

Its very difficult sellecting playing xi without shakib. Will u pick a batsman or a bowler?? Nafees will be included i think. 1.Tamim 2.Nafees 3.Anamul 4.Naeem 5.Mushfiq 6.Nasir 7.Mahmudullah 8.Mashrafee 9.Razzak 10.Gazi 11.Rubel. In that case Mahmudullah Naeem & Nasir will have to bowl 10 overs among them. It wont be a wise decision playing an extra bowler in place of a bat. Lets see what the sellectors do.

There should be a minmum of 5 new playrs in the ODI squad as some player like naem should be always selected for his test playing ability ... now we will see how slow Bangdesh scores in the ODI when quick run will be needed ... BCB should emphasize on to build up 2 seperate teams for ODI and Test matches. For now minimum of 5 players should be changed.

I think Sohag Gazi is going to be the next casualty. He is a debutant in test arena and he was bowled for almost 50+ overs every innings. Then gets picked for the ODI too, question is he a class mate or friend of Mush and Shakib, as only these boys seem to be getting chances. Gazi is a good prospect, just wish that they dont give over load on his mind and body by playing him in every match and break him down in 6 months. Give chance, nothing wrong in that but manage the work load too..

The way Shahriar plays, he is more suited for ODI's I guess. What has happened with player's like Shuvagoto hom, Jahurul ? They never took advantage of their opportunities! I don't know why did the selectors pick Naeem for the ODI series ? He is yet to be consistent in Test matches.

As Shakib will not be playing at least the first 2 ODI's, team needs one specialized batsman. If Mushfiqur, Mahmudullah and Nasir don't step up,...we will concede the series.

Ziaur Rahman Should have been in the ODI squad. As we have seen his ability as a big hitter of the ball and scoring quickly down the order in addition to his decent medium pace bowling. Surley BD won't use 4 fast bowlers and hence Ziaur should have been picked instead of either Abul hasan or Shafiul.

Poor Enamul...Gazi nd Abul shouldn't be in the team

  • RAHUL on November 24, 2012, 17:32 GMT

They should add another batsmen in the national team. Cause Gayle will try to lead West Indies to 300. WE don't want it to happen what West Indies did to New Zealand.

Selectors should keep eye on Shahriar Nafees and Syed Rasel for One day. Nafees could be failed in Test but he is very good one day player. Statistics speak for both of them.
