West Indies in Bangladesh Test Series - 2nd Test

Bangladesh v West Indies

West Indies won by 10 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Fidel Edwards with the ball.

Even as the two openers walk out to bat, the news coming in is that the crowds are pouring in now. That is good news. Isam quips, "It doesn't happen often in Bangladesh that a Test match's first day, before the first ball is bowled, has a full house."

I reckon I do not remember too many recent Tests where stands have been full house before play. Not even the first Australia-South Africa Test could manage that.

9.15 am Abul Hasan has become the 65th Bangladeshi Test cricketer, he has played four T20Is already and picked up two wickets, both against Pakistan. So that should give him some confidence going into this game.

Here is Mohammad Isam, at Khulna again, "The eastern end has filled up almost, the western side still hasn't. But there were long lines outside, so maybe a matter of time. This is the biggest sporting occasion in this city in its history..."

We certainly hope it is a full house, or as close to being one as possible!

9.10 am Here is what Mohammad Isam, our Bangladesh correspondent has to say about this venue. This is the Test debut of south-western Bangladesh, the first Test to be played here, the seventh Bangladesh ground to host Test cricket, and the 107th overall.

Tickets for the first two days play has been reportedly sold out and you can imagine how excited the people of this region is to watch international cricket. The team hotel is around 3km from the stadium and people have lined up the streets to greet both teams in the morning, huge cheers going up . The city has been gripped by the advent of cricket, and many buildings have been lit up while near the team hotel, the roundabout has been adorned in decorative lighting.

This is also a region that is the home of Shakib Al Hasan (Magura district) and Rubel Hossain (Bagerhat district) in this current Bangladesh team while the likes of Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Tushar Imran, Imrul Kayes, etc. The first-class team has won the National Cricket League twice, so one can imagine how well-followed cricket is.

9 am, Toss The news from Khulna is that Bangladesh have won the toss and elected to bat first. West Indies have brought in Fidel Edwards in place of Ravi Rampaul, but Chanderpaul is playing. Rampaul has a groin issue it seems.

Bangladesh have made a couple of changes too, Nazimuddin and Abul Hasan are in, Junaid Siddique and Shahadat Hossain sit out.

8.40 am Hello and welcome to the second and the final Test match of the series between Bangladesh and West Indies. This is the first ever to be played at Khulna, so there is a bit of history to be made here. I am Suneer Chowdhary and will take you through all five days - or whatever number it lasts!

After the first couple of innings had yielded more than 500 runs each in the first game and West Indies were sitting pretty at 209/1, a draw looked the most likely result. But things changed quickly like they often do in the sub-continent and after a brief battle for supremacy in the Test, Tino Best bowled West Indies to a famous win.

We are minutes away from the toss in this vital series-decider.

0.1

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, length ball, on the off stump, punched to the off side for a quick single. Not too much bounce on that one from Edwards.

0.2

Edwards to Nazimuddin, no run, fuller on the off stump and pushed hard to the left of mid-off, who rushes across to field it. Could have gone for a single but they refrain.

0.3

Edwards to Nazimuddin, no run, outside the off stump, length ball and Nazimuddin lets that one go through to the keeper

0.4

Edwards to Nazimuddin, FOUR, shot, a push down the ground and the pace from the delivery, the timing and the quick outfield combine to ensure that he gets off the mark with a four!

0.5

Edwards to Nazimuddin, no run, on the middle stump, quicker, a tad shorter and he defends to the off side

0.6

Edwards to Nazimuddin, no run, length ball and he shoulders arms rather exaggeratedly, lets it go through to the keeper, but there is no bounce on it.

End of over 1 (5 runs) Bangladesh 5/0
Nazimuddin    4* (5b 1x4)      FH Edwards    1-0-5-0
Tamim Iqbal    1* (1b)

Tino Best will share the new ball with Edwards. Two opening bowlers, who bowl really quick. Or at least aspire to. Three slips and a gully in place.

1.1

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitched up on the middle and driven down to mid-on, a sprawling fielding effort

1.2

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, length ball outside the off stump, Tamim leaves that one go through to the keeper and it goes at a decent height to Ramdin.

1.3

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitched up outside the off stump and driven, straight to the cover fielder

1.4

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short from Best, tests him early with the kind of deliveries that troubled Bangladesh last game but Tamim goes down quite early. Well played that.

Tamim Iqbal stops Best in his tracks, just as he is about to release the ball. It is a security guard passing by the sight-screen.

1.5

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short of good length, and on middle stump, Tamim goes back and has a rock-solid defence back to the bowler. Already signs of this being a slow track.

1.6

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, another one on length and on off-stump, defended stoutly to the off side to end a maiden over.

End of over 2 (maiden) Bangladesh 5/0
Tamim Iqbal    1* (7b)      TL Best    1-1-0-0
Nazimuddin    4* (5b 1x4)      FH Edwards    1-0-5-0

2.1

Edwards to Nazimuddin, OUT, gone, caught at short-leg, out! It was a short ball yet again, cramping the batsman for room and Nazimuddin can only fend it away to short-leg! Yes, short-leg, they have one in place for such kind of bowling and he is immediately in action. The ball did not bounce as much as it could have from that length, but what counts for the visitors is that it got them a wicket!

Nazimuddin c Powell b Edwards 4 (11m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Shahriar Nafees comes in at three. He averages 26.82 in the 23 Tests he has played.

2.2

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, no run, Another one dug in short and it bounces uncomfortably at the batsman! It was on the middle stump, waist high and the batsman had no clue how to play at it, fends it off again but fortunately for him, it goes to the off side and not to the short-leg.

2.3

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, the same brand of bowling, and for the third time in the over, it does not rear up too much. Nafees taps it uncomfortably to the leg-side and it flies over short-leg for a single.

And now Tamim Iqbal stops Edwards in his action. Dangerous territories here!

2.4

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, fuller one this time and Tamim Iqbal seems rattled by what has happened at the other end, misses a cover-drive

2.5

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off stump and he lets that length ball go through to the keeper

2.6

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, pulled away for a four! Edwards bowled another of those short balls in the over, Tamim Iqbal chooses aggression and gets it away to the square-leg fence.

End of over 3 (5 runs) Bangladesh 10/1
Tamim Iqbal    5* (10b 1x4)      FH Edwards    2-0-10-1
Shahriar Nafees    1* (2b)      TL Best    1-1-0-0

3.1

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, fiery again, on the leg-stump and pushes the batsman back, who plays it down to the leg side

3.2

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, change of length, fuller and driven to the covers, intelligent bowling that.

3.3

Best to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, short and pulled away in front of square, an indication how slow the pitch is! He seems to have had enough of the same length aimed at him and he also had a bit of room to free his arms there

3.4

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, length ball and the batsman's on the back foot, defended to the leg side

3.5

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on a good length, pitching middle and off and goes away from the batsman, through to the keeper, low down to Ramdin yet again.

3.6

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the leg stump, short of length but the batsman does not find too many demons in playing it off the back foot, back in the direction of the bowler.

End of over 4 (4 runs) Bangladesh 14/1
Shahriar Nafees    5* (8b 1x4)      TL Best    2-1-4-0
Tamim Iqbal    5* (10b 1x4)      FH Edwards    2-0-10-1

Edwards to continue.

4.1

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, length ball on the middle stump and he pushes it to the leg side

4.2

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, (no ball) FOUR, outside the off stump, fuller, but not over-pitched, and the batsman was almost waiting for it. Gives it his all, and more importantly finds the gap in the cover region. Over-stepped too.

4.2

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on the middle stump, changes his line to closer to the stumps and in turn gets more respect from the batsman. defended back to the bowler

4.3

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, down the leg side and he lets it go through to the keeper

4.4

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off stump, fuller from the bowler and Tamim pushes it to the covers, to the fielder

4.5

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, on the off stump and Tamim Iqbal punches that half-volley through the covers for a four. This was fuller than the previous one and the batsman, without the worries of swing or seam, gets it away to the fence

4.6

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on the off stump and Tamim lets it go through to the keeper

End of over 5 (9 runs) Bangladesh 23/1
Tamim Iqbal    13* (17b 3x4)      FH Edwards    3-0-19-1
Shahriar Nafees    5* (8b 1x4)      TL Best    2-1-4-0

Change in bowling as Sammy brings himself on.

5.1

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the middle, angling away and the batsman defends it on the front foot

5.2

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off stump, pitched up to the bat and the batsman goes for a drive, the slowness of the pitch defeats him and he gets it to mid-off

5.3

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, shorter and outside the off, punched through the covers for a single

5.4

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short one from Sammy, Tamim spots it early enough and goes under it easily.

5.5

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, another one that is pitched shorter outside the off stump and this time Tamim stands up tall and pushes it through the covers. There is a deep fielder already and a single is all that they get

5.6

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, but it is a four this time! The drive through wide of mid-off to a ball that is pitched right up to the bat and is outside the off stump, timed into the gap.

End of over 6 (6 runs) Bangladesh 29/1
Shahriar Nafees    10* (12b 2x4)      DJG Sammy    1-0-6-0
Tamim Iqbal    14* (19b 3x4)      FH Edwards    3-0-19-1

After that early setback and some uncomfortable moments, the batsmen have done well last few overs.

6.1

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off stump and on a length, Tamim defends it away from his body and it trickles to the off side

6.2

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, 2 runs, Oooh! That was close, could have gone anywhere, instead almost rolls over to the third-man fence! It was another of those short ones that did not rise and the batsman closes the face of his bat, leading edge flying in the air, over the covers and to the fielder

6.3

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, length ball and defended well this time

Already one slip is off. Two slips and a gully now.

6.4

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on a good length area and with an off-stump line, defended on the front foot to the off side

6.5

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, a bouncer on the leg-stump line, fended it off to deep square-leg for a single. Interesting, West Indies have both, the deep square-leg and fine-leg in place, so the batsmen can expect some attempts at bouncers.

6.6

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, no run, another bouncer and the batsman is on the back foot before taking his bat away, allows the ball to his chest guard and roll over to the leg side

End of over 7 (3 runs) Bangladesh 32/1
Shahriar Nafees    10* (13b 2x4)      FH Edwards    4-0-22-1
Tamim Iqbal    17* (24b 3x4)      DJG Sammy    1-0-6-0

7.1

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short of length, on the middle stump line and patted back on the back foot

7.2

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, fuller this time, slower too from Sammy but way outside the off-stump, the batsman lets it go through to the keeper

7.3

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off yet again but another change in length, pulled shorter from the West Indian captain. Tamim wanted to waft at it but the slowness defeats him

7.4

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitched on off stump and going away, and Tamim does not fiddle in its path

7.5

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, another one on the off stump and angling away, left alone by the batsman

7.6

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, and for the third successive time in the over, it is outside the off, only this time it is way outside and Tamim watches it as it goes through to the keeper

End of over 8 (maiden) Bangladesh 32/1
Tamim Iqbal    17* (30b 3x4)      DJG Sammy    2-1-6-0
Shahriar Nafees    10* (13b 2x4)      FH Edwards    4-0-22-1

8.1

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, no run, round the stumps and a nasty delivery that rises up more than the batsman expected, and this one is also jagging back into the batsman, fended away

and now he back to over the wicket!

8.2

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on a length and instead of letting that one go, he goes for a drive and realises very late that he shouldn't be doing that. Lucky not to get an edge.

8.3

Edwards to Shahriar Nafees, 1 leg bye, on his pads and expectedly short, tucks it to fine-leg for a leg-bye

8.4

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off stump on a length and the batsman lets it go through to the keeper

8.5

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, shot for no result! It was a bit quicker, outside the off stump and Tamim stood tall and punched it to the cover fielder, Kieran Powell does well to stop it

8.6

Edwards to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on the off-stump line yet again and he defends it on the front foot, back to the bowler

End of over 9 (1 run, maiden) Bangladesh 33/1
Tamim Iqbal    17* (33b 3x4)      FH Edwards    5-1-22-1
Shahriar Nafees    10* (16b 2x4)      DJG Sammy    2-1-6-0

Sammy will continue. 2 slips, a gully, short-cover in place.

9.1

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the off stump and defended on the front foot

It is when Sammy bowls when the actual realisation on how slow the pitch is, sets in.

9.2

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off, way outside in fact and the batsman has nothing to do with it

9.3

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, shorter one and the batsman was going on the back foot, but it took ages for the ball to arrive at him, taps it away

9.4

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, outside the off stump and it is slow too, goes for a cut that goes in the air but falls short of the deep point fielder

9.5

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, short of length on the body and pushed to the leg side for a single

9.6

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off stump and yet again, it is too wide to trouble the batsman

End of over 10 (2 runs) Bangladesh 35/1
Shahriar Nafees    11* (21b 2x4)      DJG Sammy    3-1-8-0
Tamim Iqbal    18* (34b 3x4)      FH Edwards    5-1-22-1

Change in bowling now. After a five over spell from Edwards, Tino Best comes back.

10.1

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitches outside the leg, hits the batsman on his pads and there is a huge appeal from Best and only him! The umpire was having none of it.

10.2

Best to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, outside the off, length ball and he punches it square to the sweeper fielder for a single. Yes, we already have deep fielders everywhere.

10.3

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, bouncer attempted again but for one it is outside the off stump and secondly, it does not rise up too much. The batsman is able to let that one go through to the keeper

10.4

Best to Shahriar Nafees, 2 runs, on his pads, and for a change it is fuller, punches it down the ground and it is the mid-off who has to rush across to field but which time they take two

10.5

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, quick, outside the off stump and blunted by leaving it alone to the keeper

10.6

Best to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, shorter from Best, one of the many he has attempted today and the batsman has enough time to rock back and pull it away to fine-leg for a single

End of over 11 (4 runs) Bangladesh 39/1
Shahriar Nafees    14* (25b 2x4)      TL Best    3-1-8-0
Tamim Iqbal    19* (36b 3x4)      DJG Sammy    3-1-8-0

11.1

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off and the batsman lets it go through.

11.2

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, closer lines to the batsman and he has to get his bat and pads together and tap it to the off side

11.3

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, fuller and outside the off, driven but without any timing, possibly because of the lack of pace and it goes to the mid-off fielder

11.4

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, it was a short one but it never arrived. Nafees went for the pull after awaiting for its arrival, and needed to give it a good thwack for it to get to the deep square-leg fence

11.5

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, FOUR, four more and this time it is better timed! Shorter and he pulls him nicely into the same region, interesting to note that his back-foot did not swivel too much there

11.6

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, another one that is banged in short and this time he lets it go through to the keeper

End of over 12 (8 runs) Bangladesh 47/1
Shahriar Nafees    22* (31b 4x4)      DJG Sammy    4-1-16-0
Tamim Iqbal    19* (36b 3x4)      TL Best    3-1-8-0

Mamu: Anamul Haque would be a better choice than Nazimuddin.

shakil: "tino don't do your best this time pls pls pls......" So far he hasn't!

12.1

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short one from Best immediately after the drinks break and plays it in an ungainly fashion to the off side

12.2

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitched up by Best and driven to mid-off, a good shot, but unfortunately for no runs

12.3

Best to Tamim Iqbal, 1 leg bye, dug in short again and for the second time in the over there was no conviction in the shot, which sees him go on to the back foot and push it to the leg side

12.4

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, short of length and dabs his bat down quickly, defending it back to the bowler

12.5

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, short again and this time he pulls it from the middle of the bat, almost, almost falls into the lap of the short mid-wicket fielder! Fielded well by Edwards, who is a surprising choice for a fielder at that spot!

12.6

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off stump, on a length and he lets it go through to the keeper

End of over 13 (1 run, maiden) Bangladesh 48/1
Shahriar Nafees    22* (34b 4x4)      TL Best    4-2-8-0

Slow over-rate so far with the three medium-pacers bowling. But now it is time for spin as Sunil Narine comes on. Replaces the captain.

13.1

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on the middle, fuller and the batsman takes a long step forward to defend it off the middle of his bat

13.2

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, leg stump line in an attempt to get some turn, but nothing in it and the batsman pushes it to deep square-leg for a single

13.3

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the middle again and a bit of flight, takes his foot out to defend it to the off side

13.4

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, a tad shorter and he goes for a cut, but misses, but there is no appeal from the keeper

13.5

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, bit of a leg-stump line, he comes forward to defend but it hits the pads and pops up to the leg side

13.6

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the off stump and pushed to the covers, they think of a single but decide against it

End of over 14 (1 run) Bangladesh 49/1
Shahriar Nafees    22* (38b 4x4)      SP Narine    1-0-1-0
Tamim Iqbal    20* (41b 3x4)      TL Best    4-2-8-0

Narine did not seem to get too much purchase from that first over of his.

14.1

Best to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, short on the leg stump but easily flicked away to fine-leg for a single to bring up the side's 50

14.2

Best to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, outside the off stump and punched to the covers

14.3

Best to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, shot, the shot of the morning for sure! Short of length, on the off stump and he was waiting, spanked it from the middle of the bat to deep mid-wicket and a couple of bounces later, it was on its way into the fence

14.4

Best to Tamim Iqbal, 2 runs, another shorter ball and another one pulled away to deep square-leg for a couple of runs

14.5

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, pitched up to the bat and driven back to the bowler, immediately Tamim looks back at the toe end of the the bat

14.6

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, another one fuller on the off stump and is punched back to the bowler. Best picks up in his follow through and rips it back, it is a wayward throw that goes to the second slip but the batsman is safe.

End of over 15 (8 runs) Bangladesh 57/1
Tamim Iqbal    27* (46b 4x4)      TL Best    5-2-16-0

15.1

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, pitched outside the leg-stump from round the stumps but no spin, hits the pads and rolls down to the on side

15.2

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, shorter from the bowler and on the off stump, pushed to the covers for an easy single

15.3

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, this one spins a little from a length but the batsman has enough time to go on to the back foot and play it through the covers

15.4

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, no run, on the middle stump and Nafees defends on his back foot

15.5

Narine to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, the batsman comes forward and carves out a single to the left of the cover fielder

15.6

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, goes down the pitch and wants to loft it into the stands, instead the lack of timing allows it to go only to the long-on fielder, but on the bounce.

End of over 16 (3 runs) Bangladesh 60/1

16.1

Best to Shahriar Nafees, no run, bouncer and comes up quickly this time, surprise, surprise! The batsman goes for a pull and misses as the wicket-keeper collects it over his head.

Best was stretching his leg at the start of that ball.

16.2

Best to Shahriar Nafees, 1 run, pitched right up to the bat and on the middle-stump, excellent thinking after that bouncer. Played well too, flicked away to backward square-leg for a single

16.3

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, slower from Best and defended on the front foot this time, he stares at the batsman who smiles back.

16.4

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short of length that pitches middle and angles slightly away, defended to mid-off by Tamim Iqbal. He thought of a single but was wisely sent back by the non-striker

16.5

Best to Tamim Iqbal, no run, short ball and Tamim is so early into the stroke that it hits the bottom of his bat and goes back to the bowler. And the two, the batsman and the bowler have another chat. Best has a wry smile on his face too.

16.6

Best to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, full-toss, probably an attempted yorker and it is flicked away to deep square-leg for a single

End of over 17 (2 runs) Bangladesh 62/1

17.1

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, 2 runs, outside the leg stump and the lack of pace allows him to place it in the gap on the leg-side, to in front of the deep square-leg fielder

17.2

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on the leg stump and he comes forward and defends it back to the bowler

17.3

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, continues that leg-and-middle line and the batsman pats it away to the leg side

17.4

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, quicker on his pads and pushes to mid-wicket

17.5

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, a change in length, shorter from Narine and he tries to force it through mid-wicket but straight to the fielder

17.6

Narine to Tamim Iqbal, no run, fuller on the off stump and driven to mid-off, again not for runs

Sammy replaces Best.

18.1

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, outside the off stump, shoulders arms and did I spot a bit of movement after it passed the bat? Beats the keeper too

18.2

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, slow from round the stumps and outside the off stump, left alone by the batsman

18.3

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, no run, keeps up with that outside the off stump line and the batsman continues to let them go. Question is, who will blink first.

18.4

Sammy to Shahriar Nafees, OUT, gone! caught behind, it is the batsman who blinks!. It was another one outside the off stump, but he made it to angle slightly in before it moves away, Nafees could have left it alone but he went for a forward defensive stroke, gets a feather and is caught behind!

22.2

Sammy to Naeem Islam, no run, fuller to the batsman on the off stump and driven to mid-off

22.5

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, no run, outside the off, length ball, left alone, the same drill

22.6

Sammy to Tamim Iqbal, OUT, bowled him! Whoa! That actually comes into the batsman from outside the off! The bowler had made Tamim leave all those deliveries and suddenly brought this one into the batsman from one that was slightly shorter. The angle ensured that it would jag back into the batsman and the lack of bounce allowed the ball to hit the stumps, of course aided by the batsman's decision to leave it alone! Intelligent stuff!

Back after the break for the second session of the first day at Khulna. West Indies did well to eke out three wickets on what looks like a difficult pitch to bowl on. Naeem Islam and Shakib al Hasan at the crease. Sammy to bowl.

An excellent session of cricket, good batting, thoughtful bowling and while West Indies will go into the lunch-break the happier of the two sides, there is nothing in this pitch that can prevent batsman from batting all the way. After an indifferent first spell, Darren Sammy turned out to be the man of the session with those two wickets to turn the game in favour of the visitors.

Will be back in 30 after the lunch break.

26.1

Sammy to Naeem Islam, 1 run, pitched up to the bat, outside the off stump and driven immediately after lunch. No sighters! Straight to the fielder but he is deep and they get a single

26.2

Sammy to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, round the stumps, with the keeper up and on the middle stump, driven down to mid-on

26.3

Sammy to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, pitched up to the bat on the off stump and he drives to mid-off

26.4

Sammy to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, continues to pepper him outside the off stump, as this is fuller too, Shakib is able to push it to the off side

26.5

Sammy to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR, edged and dropped! Played on his patience, continued that line outside the off, Shakib went for a drive and it flew off the edge to the second slip. Bravo was there but he floors a sitter!

What a wicket that would have been for Sammy and for the West Indies. Fidel Edwards comes on now.

27.1

Edwards to Naeem Islam, OUT, gone, bowled! This is the second poor one of the session, off only the second over of the session. Pitched up and he went for the drive, gets an inside edge and chips the bails. Shakib had earlier survived his attempt at a drive, Naeem does not! The shot may have been on but given how early it was in the session and in his own innings, there was a scope to leave the ball.

Naeem Islam b Edwards 16 (31m 22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 72.72

27.2

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, full-pitcher and a huge appeal there for an lbw, but it looks like it is going down the leg-stump. The ball pitched middle and there is a sudden sight of in-swing, which hasn't happened all day!

27.3

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, another one on the middle stump, but not full enough and the batsman brings his bat down in time to push it to the leg side

27.4

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, driven well, straight down the wicket, and so straight that the stumps at the non-striker's end are disturbed. No run is the result!

27.5

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, pulls back his length a little and the batsman defends on the back foot

27.6

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, and a poor delivery to end an otherwise excellent over, down the leg side and swinging further away from the bat and the batsman has nothing to do with it.

End of over 28 (wicket maiden) Bangladesh 93/4

28.2

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, on the off stump this time to Mushfiqur and the captain defends it well, back to the bowler

28.3

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, back to outside the off stump, pitched on the good length and Rahim lets it go through to the keeper

28.4

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, adjusts his line back to the off stump line and pitches it fuller, Rahim pushes it to short cover

28.5

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, short of length and Rahim defends it on the back foot. Needless to say it is outside the off as well.

28.6

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, fuller this time and bowls from wide of the crease, angling in and Rahim offers a straight bat back at it.

End of over 29 (1 run) Bangladesh 94/4

29.1

Edwards to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR, beauty! outside the off stump, quick too and pitched up to the bat, Shakib throws his bat at it and he manages to find the gap to get it to the fence at the sweeper fence

29.2

Edwards to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT, edged and gone! It seems to have taken the outside edge of the bat, the keeper collects it and immediately throws up the ball in celebration. The umpire also does not have any trouble in giving that out and while Shakib is disappointed, it does not seem to stem from the decision. It was a length ball, sucked the batsman into playing at it and it results in a very thin nick through to the keeper.

Shakib Al Hasan c †Ramdin b Edwards 17 (26m 20b 3x4 0x6) SR: 85.00

Two wickets in two overs for Fidel Edwards. He has bowled with a lot of gusto after the break. But Bangladesh have played without any.

29.3

Edwards to Nasir Hossain, no run, on the off stump, length ball and defended back to the off side.

29.4

Edwards to Nasir Hossain, FOUR, edged and through the slips for a four! West Indies haven't had too many slip fielders right through this innings, and this time they had only one in position. The edge easily beats him and the gully fielder and goes to the fence.

29.5

Edwards to Nasir Hossain, no run, straight-driven back to the stumps and for the second time in this session, the batsman fails to get a run because of the non-striker stumps!

29.6

30.2

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, short of length, slower and Rahim goes on to the back foot and defends it back to the bowler

30.3

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, outside the off stump and left it alone, Rahim now needs to bat through this tough period

30.4

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, outside the off stump again, up to the bat and carefully patted down to silly mid-off

30.5

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, on the pads this time, flicked away to the short mid-wicket fielder who is in place, Sammy has his hands on his head!

30.6

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, on the off stump channel, Rahim gives it the respect it deserves, or probably it is the scorecard that makes Rahim go on to the back foot and defend.

31.3

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, outside the off, going further away and Rahim shoulders arm

31.4

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, FOUR, his patience was being tested and this time he goes after that wide one, it was full and takes the outside edge of the bat, runs through the vacant third-man region for a four

31.5

Edwards to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, pulls back his length, on the off-stump line and Rahim is back to defending at it. Pushes it to short cover

31.6

37.4

Best to Nasir Hossain, FOUR, tries it again, but this time it is not only fuller but also drifts to the leg-stump, neatly flicked away to the square-leg boundary, a good, confident stroke

Richard: "He may appear innocuous with the ball but Darren Sammy contributes more consistently in all areas of the game than a lot of international cricketers. Or... maybe i'm just subconsciously comparing him to players from my own country (NZ) who are always struggling for consistency. I think he'd make the New Zealand team. Do you think he'd make any others?"

39.6

Best to Nasir Hossain, no run, that is the best line and length for that kind of a delivery, swinging into the bat, just on off stump and played on the middle, but defended well enough to bring up the second drinks break of the day.

Permaul to Nasir Hossain, no run, lot more flight and on the leg stump, defended it back to the bowler

40.4

40.6

Nasir Hossain    17* (36b 2x4)      TL Best    9-3-25-0

So spin at both ends, as we have Sunil Narine coming on for another spell. So far he has not looked threatening.

41.1

Narine to Nasir Hossain, FOUR, no, he hasn't looked too potent yet, it was on the off stump, fuller and floated up, driven through the covers for a four

41.2

41.6

Narine to Nasir Hossain, no run, length ball and the batsman goes on to his back foot and defends it

End of over 42 (8 runs) Bangladesh 142/5
Nasir Hossain    25* (42b 4x4)      SP Narine    8-0-31-0
Mushfiqur Rahim    15* (44b 2x4)      V Permaul    3-1-4-0

42.1

Permaul to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, on the leg stump, comes down the track and drives it to mid-on

42.2

Permaul to Mushfiqur Rahim, 1 run, very short, accentuated by the fact that the track is slow and gives enough time to Rahim to cut it away to deep point

Permaul to Nasir Hossain, no run, comes forward and defends it back to the bowler

42.5

42.6

Permaul to Nasir Hossain, no run, and now he defends on the front foot, excellent stuff

End of over 43 (9 runs) Bangladesh 151/5
Nasir Hossain    33* (46b 6x4)      V Permaul    4-1-13-0
Mushfiqur Rahim    16* (46b 2x4)      SP Narine    8-0-31-0

Pete: "WI skipper is a tough gig, and Sammy is makeshift but effective. With Narine developing and Gayle back in the team, there's no excuse for not becoming a mid-ranked Test team capable of upsetting RSA, Aus, India, Eng on their day."

Richard: "Watching Darren Sammy play cricket is a joy. He bats how every batsman wishes he could bat, bowls the only effective, is probably the best medium pace bowler in the world (for those operating in the 70-80 mph range) in my opinion, captains with a smile on his face and doesn't take things too seriously. He is without doubt my favourite current cricketer and I hope he stays WI captain for many more years. His positivity is turning the Windies around."

43.1

Narine to Mushfiqur Rahim, 1 run, outside the off stump, floated up in the air and a bit of fumble allows them a single. Is that a result of that flowering partnership?

43.2

Narine to Nasir Hossain, no run, defended on the back foot, bit of turn there for the bowler

43.3

Narine to Nasir Hossain, no run, more turn from the good length but the track isn't quick enough to hurry the batsman and he easily plays it to the covers

Nasir Hossain    35* (51b 6x4)      SP Narine    9-0-34-0

Halfway into the day, Bangladesh have got themselves to 160/5. Narine has a serious talk about something with Sammy. Probably the field.

45.1

Narine to Nasir Hossain, no run, fuller on the middle stump and defended by the batsman to the leg side

45.2

Narine to Nasir Hossain, FOUR, whoa, now that is another excellent shot! Pitched on the off stump and he places it through the extra-cover region for a four! It almost seems like the pitch has become much easier to bat on!

45.3

45.4

End of over 46 (12 runs) Bangladesh 172/5
Nasir Hossain    47* (57b 7x4 1x6)      SP Narine    10-0-46-0

46.6

Permaul to Nasir Hossain, no run, and this time it is shorter, pushed back to the bowler by Hossain, who is three short of his half-century

End of over 47 (1 run) Bangladesh 173/5

Mushfiqur Rahim    24* (57b 3x4)      SP Narine    10-0-46-0

Expectedly, there is a change in bowling. Narine looked below par in that spell and was taken for aplenty. Sammy comes on.

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, pitched fuller to Rahim, who cautiously drives it to short cover

47.4

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, FOUR, alright, so let me remind myself that it is a Test match, first day and the team is five down. And he Dilscoops Sammy over fine-leg for a four! No, seriously!

47.5

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, outside the off stump and lets it go through to the keeper this time. Sanity returns.

Nasir Hossain    52* (64b 8x4 1x6)      DJG Sammy    14-3-38-2

That has been an excellent, counter-attacking knock from Nasir Hossain and Bangladesh have recovered well from where they found themselves in the third over after lunch.

49.2

Sammy to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, on the off and middle now, played back to the bowler

49.5

Sammy to Nasir Hossain, no run, short of length and defended on his back foot, to the off side

49.6

Sammy to Nasir Hossain, no run, bowls from wide of the crease and gets it to angle into the batsman, who drives it back to Sammy
