Shakib retained as captain for Zimbabwe series

Shakib Al Hasan, has been retained as captain for the home one-day series against Zimbabwe, while Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal, both of whom were out injured, have returned to the Bangladesh squad. Mohammad Ashraful also returns, making yet another comeback after having been dropped for the last ODI series against New Zealand.

Shakib led the side to a historic whitewash against New Zealand, and was also the leading wicket-taker and run-scorer in the series. Mortaza, who was captain for the first game, injured his ankle and missed the remainder of the series. He had resumed bowling in the nets earlier this month in a bid to get fit for the Zimbabwe ODIs. The selectors were satisfied that he has recovered sufficiently, but have retained Shakib as captain. "Mashrafe is now fit and has been included in the side. But the board has decided to give the captaincy to Shakib for the Zimbabwe series," Rabeed Imam, the Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman, told AFP.

Bangladesh will also be bolstered by the return of key batsman Tamim - named the Test Player of the Year by the Wisden Cricketer magazine - who has recovered after undergoing surgery in September for a long-standing wrist problem. The injury bothered him throughout Bangladesh's tour of England earlier this year, and he missed the New Zealand series while undergoing post-surgery rehabilitation.

While Mortaza and Tamim were expected to be selected if they were fit, Ashraful's comeback is the latest in a year where he has been in and out of the team on account of his prolonged poor form. He was dropped for the New Zealand one-dayers, but was then handed a top-level central contract by the board in a sign he was close to the selectors' thoughts ahead of the 2011 World Cup. He recently led a second-string Bangladesh side to the country's first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the Twenty20 competition at Guangzhou. "Ashraful finds a place after his stellar performance in national cricket," Imam said.

With Tamim, Ashraful and Mortaza returning, batsmen Shahriar Nafees and Jahurul Islam, and seamer Syed Rasel, who were part of the squad against New Zealand, have been kept on standby. Uncapped allrounder Sabbir Rahman is also among the four players on standby.

Fast bowler Nazmul Hossain, who was also injured during the first ODI against New Zealand, has also been selected.

The five-match series, which starts on December 1 with the first game at Mirpur, will be Bangladesh's last ODI engagement before the World Cup.

Ashraful scored a lot of runs in the recently concluded National League as usual, whereas Shahriar Nafees couldn't really kick on! So, can't really blame the selectors....Shahriar had to win the battle but unfortunately he could not do so! And against NZ, he played only one big innings...other than that one, his bat couldn't fire that much. However, I wouldn't expect a lot from poor ASH either....he's just good enough for one out of ten matches! Rather I would say, Jahurul shouldn't have been dropped....he played few really good little innings of 40s and 50s recently!

I as a supporter of Bangladesh National Cricket team, pray and hope that they welcome player and keep them who are performing. Not them whom are fluke. Why they drop Shahriar Nafees and give chance to Rakibul Hassan I don't understand. Does he have any poltical link. Shahriar does good performence on recent series against New Zealand on the other hand Rakibul hassan does a flop show on the same series. Shahriar Nafees could also be replace Junaid cause he also has not done well on the same recent series.

why does bangladesh play always with team like zimbawe newzealand ireland and india? like indian playing with srilanka in india and and then play against them in srilanka each years.

  • Enamul on November 29, 2010, 10:23 GMT

@Manoj Mishra : Yes u indians can expect bd to fall down before WC, thats why trying to put the moral down to them by making weird comments. As india will face their first WC match with bd on their home ground n you dont wanna see another repeat of what happened in the 2007 WC. So keep trying ur best to show bangladesh team down. Very brave u r. But still India going to fail utterly int he WC,I bet. Bcoz God never help jealous n bad people. Day will come BD team will make Indian Team cry repeatedly as it happened during 2007 WC n u people wanna forget those days.

well, poor team selection i guess.exclusion of shariar nafees(despite his ton in the nz one days & the domestic arena),was to have picked, & inclusion of ashraful(despite bein in poor form in the last couple of season) is really a blunder & ave put the team at bay.comeback of tamim & masrafee must ave added morale booster to the team however return of ashraful would downsize the high-up ambition, tigers have gathered 4m the nz series thrashing them at their home soil last month.how can the think-tank make these of of errata? i was at fault when the selection took air & i dare say they wud b paid by the zim boys 4 their poor thinkin,.but thanks 4 retaining sakib as captain as mashrafee has been in & out in last couple of series. hoping to lift the series trophy by sakib with roaring attitude

This is going to be a tough series for Shakib in as a Captain. But if he succeeds, he will be able to retain the captaincy for a long period which includes the WC. Time has come for Mashrafe to come back and appear as "Mashrafe" once again and not to woe about the lost captaincy. The series should be (at least we expect to be) an acid test for Ashraful… it is an 'either perform now, or go home with your enormous talent' situation for him. Roqibul is yet to materialize his ability into performance at international level; he should be closely monitored as well. Welcome back Tamim. Go n' charge Tigers….
