Shakib retained as captain for Zimbabwe series

Shakib Al Hasan, has been retained as captain for the home one-day series against Zimbabwe, while Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal, both of whom were out injured, have returned to the Bangladesh squad. Mohammad Ashraful also returns, making yet another comeback after having been dropped for the last ODI series against New Zealand.

Shakib led the side to a historic whitewash against New Zealand, and was also the leading wicket-taker and run-scorer in the series. Mortaza, who was captain for the first game, injured his ankle and missed the remainder of the series. He had resumed bowling in the nets earlier this month in a bid to get fit for the Zimbabwe ODIs. The selectors were satisfied that he has recovered sufficiently, but have retained Shakib as captain. "Mashrafe is now fit and has been included in the side. But the board has decided to give the captaincy to Shakib for the Zimbabwe series," Rabeed Imam, the Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman, told AFP.

Bangladesh will also be bolstered by the return of key batsman Tamim - named the Test Player of the Year by the Wisden Cricketer magazine - who has recovered after undergoing surgery in September for a long-standing wrist problem. The injury bothered him throughout Bangladesh's tour of England earlier this year, and he missed the New Zealand series while undergoing post-surgery rehabilitation.

While Mortaza and Tamim were expected to be selected if they were fit, Ashraful's comeback is the latest in a year where he has been in and out of the team on account of his prolonged poor form. He was dropped for the New Zealand one-dayers, but was then handed a top-level central contract by the board in a sign he was close to the selectors' thoughts ahead of the 2011 World Cup. He recently led a second-string Bangladesh side to the country's first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the Twenty20 competition at Guangzhou. "Ashraful finds a place after his stellar performance in national cricket," Imam said.

With Tamim, Ashraful and Mortaza returning, batsmen Shahriar Nafees and Jahurul Islam, and seamer Syed Rasel, who were part of the squad against New Zealand, have been kept on standby. Uncapped allrounder Sabbir Rahman is also among the four players on standby.

Fast bowler Nazmul Hossain, who was also injured during the first ODI against New Zealand, has also been selected.

The five-match series, which starts on December 1 with the first game at Mirpur, will be Bangladesh's last ODI engagement before the World Cup.

Bangladesh squad:Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful, Raqibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Abdur Razzak, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Nazmul Hossain

Standby: Shahriar Nafees, Jahurul Islam, Sabbir Rahman, Syed Rasel

Ashraful scored a lot of runs in the recently concluded National League as usual, whereas Shahriar Nafees couldn't really kick on! So, can't really blame the selectors....Shahriar had to win the battle but unfortunately he could not do so! And against NZ, he played only one big innings...other than that one, his bat couldn't fire that much. However, I wouldn't expect a lot from poor ASH either....he's just good enough for one out of ten matches! Rather I would say, Jahurul shouldn't have been dropped....he played few really good little innings of 40s and 50s recently!

I as a supporter of Bangladesh National Cricket team, pray and hope that they welcome player and keep them who are performing. Not them whom are fluke. Why they drop Shahriar Nafees and give chance to Rakibul Hassan I don't understand. Does he have any poltical link. Shahriar does good performence on recent series against New Zealand on the other hand Rakibul hassan does a flop show on the same series. Shahriar Nafees could also be replace Junaid cause he also has not done well on the same recent series.

@Manoj Mishra : Yes u indians can expect bd to fall down before WC, thats why trying to put the moral down to them by making weird comments. As india will face their first WC match with bd on their home ground n you dont wanna see another repeat of what happened in the 2007 WC. So keep trying ur best to show bangladesh team down. Very brave u r. But still India going to fail utterly int he WC,I bet. Bcoz God never help jealous n bad people. Day will come BD team will make Indian Team cry repeatedly as it happened during 2007 WC n u people wanna forget those days.

well, poor team selection i guess.exclusion of shariar nafees(despite his ton in the nz one days & the domestic arena),was to have picked, & inclusion of ashraful(despite bein in poor form in the last couple of season) is really a blunder & ave put the team at bay.comeback of tamim & masrafee must ave added morale booster to the team however return of ashraful would downsize the high-up ambition, tigers have gathered 4m the nz series thrashing them at their home soil last month.how can the think-tank make these of of errata? i was at fault when the selection took air & i dare say they wud b paid by the zim boys 4 their poor thinkin,.but thanks 4 retaining sakib as captain as mashrafee has been in & out in last couple of series. hoping to lift the series trophy by sakib with roaring attitude

  • SHAHEDHAWK on November 29, 2010, 7:15 GMT

This is going to be a tough series for Shakib in as a Captain. But if he succeeds, he will be able to retain the captaincy for a long period which includes the WC. Time has come for Mashrafe to come back and appear as "Mashrafe" once again and not to woe about the lost captaincy. The series should be (at least we expect to be) an acid test for Ashraful… it is an 'either perform now, or go home with your enormous talent' situation for him. Roqibul is yet to materialize his ability into performance at international level; he should be closely monitored as well. Welcome back Tamim. Go n' charge Tigers….

Why Rakibul??????????? This should be Sharier Nafees. Ashraful got himself out as fool, he should get chance later after showing better performance. Though i like him.

  • on November 29, 2010, 7:07 GMT

My Best 11 for the Zimbabwe series as well as world cup...

Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Alok Kapali, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain

including Shahriar Nafees, Naeem Islam, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Nazmul Hossain

Why Alok Kapali Should be picked? Because he is one of the finest attacking middle-order batsman who has a great defense and can score runs on a regular basis. Also, he is a genuine wicket-taking leg spinner. And I don't find a strong free flowing middle order batsmen in the current squad other than Shakib Al Hasan.

  • on November 29, 2010, 6:49 GMT

whoever may be the captain of bangladesh, the team will loose to the underdogs zimbawe.zimbawe has a good bunch of youth and experience .so they will guts it out to win the series. After getting their test status by the icc they will be yoning to go out full guns and win the series.

  • on November 29, 2010, 6:45 GMT

This is a shame that selector dropped Shahriar Nafees. But selecting Shakib as captain is the right decision and he must be lead as a captain in the world cup.

  • timohyj on November 29, 2010, 6:31 GMT

This looks like a pretty good team, at least better than Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe's pace attack is toothless and their spin attack is at best only good to slow down the runs a bit in the middle overs. Their pacers never bowl good lines and lengths, easy win for Bangla

  • L.Pearce on November 29, 2010, 6:20 GMT

The challenge has been set for ZIM. BAN hav selected their best full strength squad and as i look at the 15 i see no reason why it should not b the same come WC 2011. People of BAN should be proud and not criticise. c'mon ZIM the challenge has been set!

  • KORBAN on November 29, 2010, 6:18 GMT

I am vary happy to hear the news that sakib is the captain of Bangla tiger. It is a wise decision of bcb. I think it should be continued.

  • on November 29, 2010, 2:59 GMT

Well finally BCB wake up and announce the team!!! Anyway its the best possible team that we have right now. So to me being a bit late they have announce the right team. But one thing I should mention about MD. Ashraful that although he scored few runs but as i closely monitored his performance sitting on the stadium or online/media i think he is still not in his best. As we all know there is a massive difference between domestic cricket vs International Cricket so i'm sill in doubt how well he would perform against ZIM. But he is talented as ever I hope & wish he will make a means this time rather. So everything is set up, Its all yours to grab the ZIM boys TIGERS!!!

  • Sachit1979 on November 29, 2010, 1:56 GMT

I am expecting Bangladesh to go for another white wash. Zimbabwe is more than fragile with almost neglible pace attack and insipid spin attack. I believe Bangladesh should close the series in first 3 matches only and should try their bench strength in last 2 matches. Atleast they desperately need to find out replacements for Roqibul and Ashraful in their playing 11 with more consistent batsmen. Nafees and Sabber would have been my choice. Tamim, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mushfiq, Mashrafe, Naeem, Suhravadi, Abdur Razzak and Rubel have already proved their mettle to cement their place for WC 2011 but other positions are still subject to change.

  • Nadeem1976 on November 29, 2010, 1:11 GMT

Bangla keep on playing with low level teams and stay at low level for ever. Play with some good teams Bangla. Please.

  • on November 28, 2010, 21:52 GMT

Sahariar Nafees should have been picked. Even though he was poor in domestic he id good against new zeland and he always do good against zimbabwe

  • mavenhb on November 28, 2010, 21:36 GMT

I think it will be 3-2 and bangladesh is winning it ofcourse.

  • on November 28, 2010, 21:34 GMT

  • on November 28, 2010, 20:11 GMT

so many fast bowlers, why Shahriar Nafees, and Syed Rasel are out from main squad?

  • on November 28, 2010, 19:26 GMT

I dont get it how Md Ashraful gets another chance after poor show in Asian Games. I think they should have dropped Raqibul and add Jahrul Islam and S Nafees instead of them. This is sending wrong message to the players.

  • on November 28, 2010, 19:18 GMT

Raqibul scored 51 runs in the NZ series with an average of 17, a strike rate of 40% and a highest score of 18. Shahriar Nafees scored 119 runs at an average of 30, a strike rate of 95% and a highest score of 73. I honestly don't see how Raqibul got picked ahead of Nafees...

And I need someone to convince me that Raqibul Hasan has better potential than Shahriar Nafees to be included in 15-man main squad!

  • bdcricfan21 on November 28, 2010, 18:50 GMT

Why has Shariar Nafees been dropped? He gets dropped while Junaid is retained? Shahriar Nafees was one of the better batsmen in NZ series, and his overall international record is one of the best in the BD team. NO wonder why these guys left for the ICL a few years ago. A perennial failure like Junaid and Ashrafool can find a spot but someone with a proven record like Nafees gets dropped even after doing well. Junaid was awful in the NCL tournament as well. Junaid has a career average of around 22 in 41 innings while Raquibul has a pathetic strike rate of 61 in 46 matches with an average of 29. If these two are in our middle order, scoring over 250 will be impossible for BD. Clearly these guys are not international quality cricketers. Also Shakib has been appointed captain on a series by series basis. According to local paper, the captaincy was imposed on Shakib, and he is quite unhappy about this.
