Jurgensen becomes full-time Bangladesh coach

29

Shane Jurgensen, the 36-year-old Australian, will continue as Bangladesh's head coach for the rest of the year. He was the side's interim coach in their previous international series, against West Indies in which the home side won the ODI series 3-2.

The decision was taken by the board's cricket operations committee during a meeting on Saturday. His 11-month appointment will be formalised once the Bangladesh board approves it next week. Several other coaching appointments are likely over the next week.

"Shane Jurgensen was the most suitable candidate among those who had applied for the position," BCB's media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said. "The cricket operations committee will recommend his appointment till December 31 this year."

Jurgensen first became part of the Bangladesh coaching set-up in October 2011, taking charge of the bowling, and took over as interim head coach after Richard Pybus quit last October. Bangladesh have been struggling to find a coach for the long term after Jamie Siddon's four-year tenure ended soon after the 2011 World Cup. Stuart Law was in the job for less than a year, and Pybus lasted only four months.

Jurgensen was New Zealand's bowling coach between 2008 and 2010 and had also recently been a coach on New Zealand Cricket's high performance programme. He has coached for nearly 15 years at a number of different levels since his first trip to the United Kingdom with Horsham Cricket Club at the age of 21.

Stuart Karppinen, the trainer at BCB's National Cricket Academy, will take over as the national team's trainer during the tour to Sri Lanka next month. The positions of batting and fielding coach are still being negotiated, and the Bangladesh board are looking to name a local as the assistant coach.

"Stuart Karpinnen will be our trainer for Sri Lanka, I won't mention names but we have lined up candidates for two specialist positions," Yunus said. "The batting coach is someone from the UK and the fielding coach will be Australian.

"We will negotiate with them, and possibly try to bring them before the Sri Lanka series. If we don't get the specialist positions from our list, we will take local coaches to Sri Lanka.

"We wanted a local assistant coach, for which four former national players have shown interest. We will advertise for the position so that others can apply."

Saqlain Mushtaq is also set to return as spin bowling consultant though he wants to do the job for 100 days in a year.

sorry for mistake the correct thing is: @Rafelgibt yeah you are right .But I don't think Shakib is badly injured .I think he don't want to play test to attend in ipl. and someone from the BCB said if he play then he have to play all format of games but if he doesn't then he can't play in ipl .

@fire_dargon on (February 11, 2013, 9:01 GMT) i think we both are concern of Bangladesh cricket that's the reason we are here, aren't we?Your team is quite ok.But the fact is that according to the few reports of different media Shakib,Shafiul,Nazmul are injured enough to miss the test series. So, my team was selected base on that. But selection of Nafees;it is clear that he cant settle against bouncy ball (if you watch his last few innings) and Taskin Ahmed (he played 3 matches got 5 wickets in last NCL) is quite interesting.Otherwise we both selected almost the same players for the Test squad whether you like it or not.No hard feelings only prayers for Bangladesh cricket team.

Also just like to say it would be ideal if the Zimbabwe series had 3 test matches instead of 2 since both teams are not getting enough Cricket and won't be participating in ICC Trophy. ICC allows test matches to be played at night now so maybe a third Zim-Ban test can be played at night so we can see whether it will work just my opinion.

  • AzAb12754 on February 11, 2013, 11:16 GMT

It doesn't matter how much our batting, fielding or spin bowling has improved we still lack top quality fast bowlers which is a must in Cricket. With no disrespect to our current fast bowlers, apart from maybe 1 the rest are pretty ordinary. Therefore realistically its important some of our top players play abroad in different conditions when there are no International assignments.

    @Rafelgibt if you ask me my 15 man squad then they are . 1.Tamin 2.Nafees/Jahurul 3.Anamul 4.Shakib 5.Nasir 6.Musfiq 7.Mahamudullah 8.Shohag 9.Rubel 10.Enamul/Taskin 11.Shafiul/Nazmul 12th man Abdur Razzak . You may like it or mayn't but I like it .

@Rafelgibt Whatever we say it doesn't matter until the selector select the squad . You are talking about Mominul if he play well it is good for us . But what I am trying to say he always in aggressive mode how can he be good for test . and Shadat, he may have good records but the way he played some previous game I don't think any one like to include him in the squad .

  • Rafelgibt on February 11, 2013, 8:25 GMT

@ fire_dargon on (February 10, 2013, 17:39 GMT) what seems to be a funny?Have you got the better 15 men than my proposed team?Kindly mention it.And regarding Mominul he is a consistent performers in domestic circuit and last year he got the debut in international level. So, my point he is ready for a go in TEST (Not in ODIs and T20s). Again SHAHADAT got the most impressive bowling stats(far beyond than international standard) among the TEST bowlers of Bangladesh. As we dont have other pace bowlers; so, he also got go in TEST.Otherwise, rest of the 13 are the best players to play test for Bangladesh.

  • fire_dragon on February 10, 2013, 17:39 GMT

@Rafelgibt Not a great squad you are including Shadat and Mominul in test . are you serious or just joking.

  • Rafelgibt on February 10, 2013, 6:57 GMT

For the SL TEST series i would recommend the following 15 man squad: Batsmen@ Tamim, Anamul, Naeem, Mominul, Mushfiqur, Nasir ,Mahmudullah, Johurul Islam, Marshal Ayub; Spinners@ Sohag Gazi,Elias Sunny, Enamul (Jnr); Pacers@ Rubel, Abul Hasan, Shahadat Hossain (As we don't have other choices). Among those 15, Marshall is the highest run scorer in the last NCL and Enamul (Jnr) seriously deserves a genuine chance to get into the national side.Hope wth this team we are going to show a very good fight against SL.Roar Tigers Roar>>>>

@ The_Ashes cant agree with you about the inclusion of Shamsur & Milon, Milon particularly .They are good players no doubt but performing well in the BPL, doesnt mean they can perform in the ODIs too. If u check their BCL or NCL records you will get the point why. Its too still early for them to get in the national squad in the present situation, though they are more than the perfect age to make the debut. I would like to retain more or less the same squad vs WI, may be E Sunny and Zia is going to be dropped. In place of them may b the best choice would be to include Shafiul and Enamul jr or Taskin Ahmed. And in the mean time Sabbir,Shamsur,Saqlain and mayb Millon can show their skills in the upcoming Dhaka Premier League.

  • Rafelgibt on February 10, 2013, 3:50 GMT

A very right choice by BCB.No doubt he is the best man to serve as our national coach.Hope he would show his best caliber as our head coach.Wish him all the luck for the upcoming tours.

  • fire_dragon on February 10, 2013, 2:40 GMT

@The_Ashes your choice is good but I am not sure about Alok Kapali. But Taskin Ahmed can be included .

gr8 decision...Mr. Jargensen is the right man for the post..We need Mr. Salauddin too with our team...

  • on February 9, 2013, 15:05 GMT

A very good coach and a very good choice for Bangladesh. We need someone who has no issue in their stay in Bangladesh,is familiar with the country and with it's local upcoming talents.

I feel strongly that Shane Jurgensen is the right man to move Bangladesh cricket forward by identifying the problems that exists and finding the correct solutions to rectify these problems.

Big name coaches come with lots of baggage and demands in which Bangladesh does not need.
