The club versus country debate has cropped up again as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan has barred players from participating in the IPL during international series.
Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal are the only Bangladesh players associated with the league, and have not asked for NOCs (No Objection Certificates) yet. Bangladesh's Zimbabwe tour commences on April 13 and ends on May 12, while the IPL is scheduled between April 3 and May 26. Shakib plays for Kolkata Knight Riders and Tamim for Pune Warriors and the BCB decision means the pair will be eligible to play in only four IPL matches.
"There is no chance for players to take part in these [IPL] tournaments when an international series is going on," Hassan said. "As far as I know, cricket boards don't allow such things, and we will not provide that opportunity [either].
"We haven't been requested to provide any NOCs yet. I was asked if they can go to the IPL instead of the Zimbabwe tour, but I told them that they wouldn't be able to. I know for sure that even in my capacity, I cannot let them go."
Hassan didn't single out the two players, but warned players against trying to pick and choose formats. "The country comes first, otherwise there is always the chance of the players thinking they can play in these tournaments, where they have more personal benefits. I am not saying that the players are taking chances, but this attitude isn't healthy when you look at the bigger picture."

Good move. It is either no games during internationals or No IPL if there are games. Either board understands players earning chance or the players understand what their top priority should be.. Great job BCB and boards need to buck up their players from going for opting for T20 leagues when they actually have game scheduled for the nation.
I don't think Shakib will be fit anyway before mid April. Any country would have done the same, I guess. BCB has nothing against IPL or any other leagues. But BCB and Zimbabwe board could have found a window to avoid this clash. Looks like it wasn't possible. Players should be given opportunity to earn money too.
I am against deriding IPL. IPL generates money, some competitive cricket is played out there, people love it too.
Awesome decision taken by the BCB president.I must congratulate him for clearing the view from boards point that ho player can choose club cricket over country.Hope player would get the alarm to shake their heads and concentrate more on personal performances for the country.
Finally its confirmed, brave and good move. Really like our new BCB president, he has the desire to make Bangladesh Cricket succeed even enjoys the game as well and watches them in the stadiums. No player in the Bangladesh team including Tamim and Shakib are guaranteed their spots now cause so many for once are eyeing an opportunity to play for the national team. Its all about the right attitude that our players need to have first not what you want for personal gain.
Why would Shakib struggle at IPL especially against Indian players? he picked up 2 man of match awards last seasons IPLin just 7 games :P plus is the youngest and quickest all-rounder in history to pick up together 1000 runs in ODIs and Tests plus 100 wickets in ODIs and Tests :P

This decision saved them from the, year after year, shame that they experience for not playing full quantum of matches at the IPL. Good decision indeed! :)
Posted by baghels.a on (March 7, 2013, 9:11 GMT)@Edd Oliver,warm -cofee , you say it is overhyped but still less than your beloved EPL i think , last heard Man City and Chelsea are out of CL in group stages ,United are out and they will be joined by Arsenal, you say IPL is harming test cricket but similarly EPL which is dominated by foriegners is causing greater harm to English national football team !!! at least India won WC in 2011 , no.1 in tests and odi's , u-19 WC in 2012 after the advent of IPL IN 2008....You people suffer from double standards and are envious of India's and BCCI's success , instead of bashing BCCI please advice your English media and majority of your countrymen to stop being so obssesed with Football and devote some time and resources to cricket then you could have a lucrative cricket league of your own !!! Kudos to Indian cricket and community.BTW la liga,Bundesliga,Serie A much better than EPL !!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps next year some win:win common ground can be achieved - where the BCB get to field the country's top performers and players get to earn a decent living by plying their profession. I know that atheletes have a limited peak-performance life window which needs to be put to best use.
