Nat Thomson was a major figure in the early days of Australian cricket, playing regularly, but without any great success at first-class level, for New South Wales for 20 years. He appeared in the first two Tests in 1876-77 as an opening batsman - he was the first man to be dismissed in Tests - and his career effectively ended when business commitments meant that he was unable to accept an invitation to tour England in 1878.
