Shakib Al Hasan, the former Bangladesh captain, has become the No. 1 Test allrounder in the latest ICC rankings following his outstanding performance against Pakistan in Mirpur. Shakib's rise ended Jacques Kallis' lengthy hold on the position.

"Without any doubt it's great news for me and for the country's cricket, and I'm really happy. I have had the self-belief that it will come my way sooner or later because for a long time I was in the top five, so it was a matter of time," Shakib told the Daily Star. "It's fantastic that the performance in the last Test of the year helped me achieve this feat, but it would be much better if we could manage a good result from the last Test match."

Shakib became the first Bangladesh player to score a hundred and take five wickets in an innings during a Test, and his 144 and 6 for 82 won him the Man-of-the-Match award. The century was Shakib's second in Tests and it lifted his average to 34.68. He averages 31.36 with the ball and has 96 Test wickets. Pakistan, however, won the Mirpur Test to take the series 2-0.

Kallis, who made 31 and went wicketless in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Centurion, was the No. 1 allrounder for 3696 days and will have the chance to reclaim the top position during the final two matches of that series in Durban and Cape Town.

Daniel Vettori, Shane Watson and Stuart Broad complete the top allrounders list in Test cricket.

It is really true that Bangladesh have lots of players but maximum players have no such common sense about how to play cricket ..... I really like Shakib Al Hasan as a Bangladeshi fan.........He a really good performer and alone fighter..... I feel happy for him and also feel sorry that He doesn't get any support from other players.....I wish one day Bangladesh will play good.........thats all..........All the best to BD and speciall to Shakib Al Hasan :) :)

@SamRoy, I am genuinely amused that you blamed Dalmia as more a money maker than thinking about cricket (proof: Bangladesh got early test status. Wondering how much Bangladesh paid or ICC got benefited?) where whole world is now after ICC aka BCCI for ONLY focusing on money instead of cricket. During Dalmia's time, ICC had a policy to spread cricket globally which resulted in countries like Argentina, Singapore etc. started playing cricket. After Dalmia, ICC aka BCCI tried to beat Modi and wanted to show the world that they (ICC) could also make money. Cricket was long forgotten, money came in. I know why you are criticizing Dalmia and alleging that Bangladesh were given test status before time. Its only because without proper leadership, Bangladesh have produced players who are placed in a high that no Indian could ever reach and no one would do so soon.

A lone fighter in poor side. Reminds me of sachin of 90's. Congrats!!

Posted by   on (December 25, 2011, 9:58 GMT)

just like sachin of India shakib is carrying the flag of BD....very nice to see him in the top!!

Posted by   on (December 25, 2011, 8:29 GMT)

why there is lot of argument for Kallis Vs Sakib!! we should remember that both of them are great players.Kallis is a experence campaigner and Sakib is still young but ready to be a great cricketer.Kallis get support from others team member from SA but Sakib Doesn't and probably that makes him more unique... best wishes for both of them.

Posted by Pablo123 on (December 24, 2011, 22:35 GMT)

@ Ssanam and others - judging by your comments - you guys are completely delusional. To think Shakib will overtake Jacques Kallis's records is the craziest notion in cricket - ever !

And to also set some other comments straight - Jacques is not in bad form - what makes you think that? The guy is in sublime form. Just because he doesn't hit a 100 at will does find him in bad form, he just does not have bad form, period.

He is in great shape and probably will play another 4 years. He has not hinted on retirement and there is no way he'll be pushed towards it. Much like Sachin, his team, the board and the entire Country of South Africa would have him play till 50 if we could. Long Live KING Kallis.

Shakib...Worcestershire needs you back mate! The couple of seasons you spent with us seems to have done you no harm :)

Posted by Pablo123 on (December 24, 2011, 22:20 GMT)

Just to clear this up for a few silly people. Shakib is NOT the first person to be ranked No.1 in both tests and ODI - Jacques Kallis has been in that position a few times, in both all rounder AND batting rankings in both, something Shakib will never achieve. Don't take anything away from Kallis - he is king of cricket.

Posted by   on (December 24, 2011, 19:20 GMT)

'Shakib Al Hasan' is currently worlds number-one ranked 'allrounder' in both Tests and ODIs. What an AWESOME feat to achieve for a cricketer from a country like Bangladesh that does not have as much cricketing history/infrastructure as most other cricketing heavyweights. It is so surprising to note that NONE of the Indian cricketers have achieved this dual-feat (since inception of ICC Rankings) and sooo very heartening to see my fav - Shakib, on top!!! ...Shakib - you ROCK!

Great Sakib, Good job Keep it up ..

@Sazzad Hossain Lemon - After 2011 WC, Shakib has played 5 Tests whereas Kallis has played only 3. So YOU better get the facts right.

Goon on you Shakib! Carry on the good work

Posted by Dan9999 on (December 24, 2011, 1:32 GMT)

Just would like to point out the fact that Jacques Kallis was the no.1 test all-rounder for 10 YEARS and 40 odd days. Absolutely outstanding!

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 21:34 GMT)

Well done Shakib. Looking forward to seeing more from you in future. Keep it up.

Posted by Chris_P on (December 23, 2011, 21:33 GMT)

Well deserved to Shakib. His performances have spoken for themselves. For those who say this justifies Bangladesh's test status, wake up. Shakib is obviously a class act, but to be brutally honest, almost all his team mates would struggle to get into any first class side in most countries, not due ot lack of talent, but almost entirely due to lack of first class experience and assiciated application required to succeed.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 19:43 GMT)

@Indian boy: You are saying dat this position iz due to Kallis decline. How many tests are played by Kallis in a year? BD doez not get much chance of playing test cricket @ all. Remember da fact.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 18:06 GMT)

well done Sakib, Keep it up Good job, Really we are proud of you.

Posted by stez on (December 23, 2011, 15:40 GMT)

No offence Shakib but I think I know who I'd rather have in my team out of you and Kallis. Stay at no. 1 as long as Kallis and I'll reconsider. Ask yourself the question, who out of these 2 would get in the current England team? I am English by the way, not South African!!

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 14:21 GMT)

Well done Shakib, I was hoping you would get a double hundred on that last test though, but oh well.

To the people comparing Kallis with Shakib..Kallis is a LEGEND and will always be no doubt, however the rankings are based on present performances, not what they performed through their careers. Besides, Kallis has played for quite a long while now, it's only natural he would have massive records due to the sheer number of matches and his talent, who's to say Shakib won't just get better from here? Every1 starts somewhere ;)

I just hope the god damn team plays better from now on.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 13:32 GMT)

welldone sakib, really we are proud of you. Go ahead......................

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 13:19 GMT)

regarding the current situation, shakib is better than kallis....not only that kallis is performing poorly but also that shakib is performing excellently, jaque is one of favorite player and a true living legend of the game....shakib is a legend-to-be who still got more 12-14yrs to play compared to kallis's 2-3...but kallis would return, no big deal..we need an improve board mainly not people like kamal we can produce more shakibs constantly in the future.....

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 13:08 GMT)

Shakib's achievement is great. It will boost the bd players mentally, i hope. However, Shakib has to continue his performance to be great like Kallis. In case Shakib get supports from other teammates (what Kallis gets from Steyen, boucher, Amla, smith...) then Shakib's performance will be far better than this.

Posted by Jawwad123 on (December 23, 2011, 13:05 GMT)

I don't get why Indian supporters can't resist Bangladesh's progression in cricket. When you can't praise them, at least keep quiet. Have as much fun now, it won't be long before India slump and people begin to ridicule the India team!!

Posted by me54321 on (December 23, 2011, 12:48 GMT)

Well done Shakib! No doubt Kallis deserved is lengthy stint at the top, but these days he's not really a genuine allrounder. I haven't checked his stats, but I'm pretty sure his bowling returns recently aren't anywhere near what they used to be. I think the title of world's best allrounder will be much more hotly disputed in the coming years with Shakib, Watson, Broad, and I'm sure others vying for it.

Posted by India_boy on (December 23, 2011, 12:40 GMT)

not to belittle this tremendous achievment, but one has to agree that his claim to no.1 spot is helped more by Kallis's own decline than by his own efforts. Kallis a collossal in world cricket and one who has literally carried the mantle of all-rounders on his shoulders for the last 1 decade, is sadly a spent force now. he will gradually go on to the lower rungs of all rounders in the top 10 and finally out of the list in another year or so. otherwise who can imagine toppling him from the perch when he is performing the way he has been in the last 10 years. that said, shakib is definitely one of the best roundies today, right there with Vettori!

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 12:15 GMT)

3696 days is too long.. Well done Shakib. Keep performing like this. proud of you mate.. :)

Posted by ssanam on (December 23, 2011, 12:09 GMT)

@Mitchel Van Wyk. No one is kidding you.You are kidding yourself! How long you want Kallis to remain at the top?Young and energetic players like Shakib displaces players like Kallis. In due course,Shakib will surely surpass the records of Kallis.May be within a very short time. But that is beside the point.Accept the fact and learn to appreciate the achievements of others without any reservation.

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (December 23, 2011, 11:16 GMT)

The efforts put by Shakib remember me the Sachin in Indian team of 90s...Sachin will score 100s, 50s and get wickets too and only one or two were able to support him with a 40 or 50...but in 80% those matches, if Sachin bat or bowl well, India were winning...but thats not the case for BD.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 10:59 GMT)

wait, what about kallis, vettori, broad, watson. you've gotta take these ICC rankings with a pinch of salt.

Posted by TendiyaRocks on (December 23, 2011, 10:42 GMT)

All who says that he gets wickets merely because they attempt to "see him off" seriously need to watch his bowling spells. He gets the ball to turn with his round arm action and has a brilliant arm ball too.

@johnathonjosephs Re: 5fers and "seeing him off": And as for if he'd played for England and the opposition having no option: Swann bowled 1 50+ spell and 2 40+ spells among his 5 fers and out of which in four occasions he conceded 100+ (and no, all of those 100+ were <3 rpo, clearly implying that no one "went after him")

Contrast that with Shakib, who only bowled only one 40+ over spell and conceded 100+ on two occasions, and on both occasions, he went over 3 rpo+, ie batsmen attacked him on those occasions.

So I'd say that argument is pretty much invalid. Whatever Shakib has done is phenomenal - don't even consider the fact that he's from the bottom ranked team - the guy is still awesome.

Need more Shakib to uplift the standard of Bangladesh Cricket.

Posted by UmarFarook on (December 23, 2011, 9:59 GMT)

Shakib is a wonderful player Bangladesh ever produced. At the same time, these days there are no any real all-rounders like Imran, Kapil, Botham or Hadlee, in the World. Any batsman who can bowl may become an allrounder. Anyhow I congratulate Shakib to achieve this feat.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 9:50 GMT)

although bangladesh are a weak team giving Shakib more chance to pick up points... i wonder if their were other players who were in stronger teams who didnt make the batting, bowling, allrounder rankings because of the strength of the rest of the team hence kallis held it for longer... as much as i hate the ranking system used it is what it is its based on current performance not potential or previous feats as in my last post he doent like to bowl... in fact against pakistan in the last game for both, kallis bowled and batted twice 1/77 in 23 overs,105 & 10... Shakib 7/129 in 50 overs 144, 6... if i was picking a team i would go for kallis all day long however on current performance shakib deserves this may not be for long but nevertheless

Posted by ssanam on (December 23, 2011, 9:40 GMT)

Congratulations,Shakib.Keep up the good work. Some Indian so called cricket lovers will find fault with the ranking system !Please don"t be disappointed.Overlook them and stay well.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 9:33 GMT)

Its actually laughable to see many fans comparing Kallis and Shakib. It is like someone comparing Sachin Tendulkar and Allistar Cook. Kallis is a legend of the game. And Shakib surely is a young world class player. Shakib have achieved this feat by extreme hard work. He is playing for Kolkata Knight Riders and Worcestershire. And he is doing great for them as well. But if he wants to climb the ladder from a world class player to a legend of the game he will have to carry on this performance for another 10 years like Kallis or Botham. This feat will not make it easy for him as all other teams will target him from now on. Thanks Shakib you are a real pride of all Bangladeshis. We just hope few others of your team mate will take inspiration from your success. Carry on Sir!

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 9:29 GMT)

Sakib is talented player, but bangla need more player like him.

the former Bangladesh captain, has become the No. 1 Test allrounder in the latest ICC rankings following his outstanding performance against Pakistan in Mirpur. Shakib's rise ended Jacques Kallis' lengthy hold on the position.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 8:15 GMT)

You have got to be absolutely kidding me!! I cannot beleive what I am reading! He has scored only 2 hundreds and 9 50's with average of 35 in comparison to Kallis' 12,000 runs and average of almost 57. The guy can play but there is no comparison for who we should be calling the best all-rounder in cricket...which should include fielding aswell...and Kallis' 173 catches stands out a little.

Posted by streetblader on (December 23, 2011, 8:07 GMT)

Yeah, thats the only way bangladesh cricket can create some worthwhile news... play countries like WI and Zimbabwe, lose all the matches, and allow one cricketer to score some runs and wickets and be happy about it... BD is a disgrace to cricket and should be stripped off of all matches to avoid the torture on watchers/listeners/readers...

Posted by recycle-bin-is-empty on (December 23, 2011, 8:02 GMT)

Congratulations to Shakib, he carries the pressure of entire team and hopes of many fans without much support from his team-mates and yet, he has established himself as the best all-rounder in world cricket today! And that too at such a young age of only 24!! Hopefully he will keep himself fit and play for a long time and achieve many more such feats.

Posted by SamRoy on (December 23, 2011, 7:42 GMT)

@sarmin80 And I hope that Bangladesh can draw at least 25% of the test matches they play. I have given up on this team. They shouldn't have been given test status so early (of course Dalmiya never cared for quality of cricket, he was more interested in money making). Bangladesh must learn how to draw matches. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and NZ weren't much better when they first started but they drew test matches (not just at home but away too). That means they had more application. BANGLADESH BATSMEN HAVE 0 (ZERO) APPLICATION. In the next five years if Bangladesh loses more than 80% of their test matches they should unceremoniously dumped from test cricket. Should be stripped off their test status. It's been 10 years and still they lose almost every test match they play at home (Away from home they lose everything).

Well done Sakib. It's a great achievement for you as well as for our Country. We are proud to have a player like you. But one small advice to you please inspire others to perform well though you are not captain of the team. Please don't get complacent on this achievement and keep trying to improve further. Lastly we pray and hope you remain in this position for long time. Best of luck SAKIB.

Despite all the negative comments regarding you don't deserve a no 1 position as a test all rounder, shakib, we love you and we keep on loving you. And we are very proud that you brought us such a huge joy in the month of victory. Wish, some of your colleagues will understand that one day and the Bangladesh Cricket Board value your cricket brain one day. To all the negative comments, who cares all these? You ARE the no 1 and no1 can take this away from you.

Posted by satish619chandar on (December 23, 2011, 7:00 GMT)

To be fair, not much all rounder these days.. Shakib is excellent for BD and have displayed very good skills while bowling as well as batting.. Watto is a very good bowler but wasted as a opener.. Kallis not bowling much also, his bowling lost its zip these days.. Botha could well be a challenge for Shakib but his batting is not utilized properly and he doesn't play tests.. The real challenge to Shakib is Hafeez who is consistent in batting and more than decent in bowling..

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 6:57 GMT)

The 10 year info is slightly WRONG. Please check this link: http://www.relianceiccrankings.com/playerdisplay/test/all-rounder/?id=2125&graph=ranking. Its slightly wrong because only 2 times kallis lost topspot before this. One in 2006 and one in 2005(to flintoff). He came to top 3 in 1999 and never got out. What makes shakib's rank more significant is that He RARELY gets chance to bowl twice due to batsmen failure.

Posted by eZoha on (December 23, 2011, 6:56 GMT)

Shakib is only 24. I hope he keeps improving and BD gets more matches to play. Looking forward to knowing where he ends up.

Shakib deserves it. Shakib is far better than Shane Watson & Stuart Broad. If he gets proper support from his team mates, he will be the G.O.A.T . (Greatest of All Time). Keep Going Shakib. We love you. ( A message from a true Cricket fan)

Posted by the_unforgettable on (December 23, 2011, 6:14 GMT)

Shakib is probably the best thing Bangladesh cricket has produced in this decade!! The ranking just shows the progress of the recent performance, no need to mention that Shakib is performing better than Kallis, but still overall Kallis is a better all rounder as far as the stats go!! As mentioned in the comments here, both have advantages and disadvantages for playing their respective teams and situations, so both of them are worthy of what they are!! Now the it depends on the future if Shakib surpasses Kallis as an all rounder overall!!

Well Done. But you have a long way to go.You must improve your batting.at least keep the .avg above 40.00 in both ODI and TEST.

Some People just don't know how to Appreciate other's.Sakib came to this position because he deserved it, he didn't bacome no #01 position both Test & One day overnight. Kallis is a great player no doubt, but he can not hold the place forever, some one has to take this position, may be he will take back his position but so far he is no 1, best of luck sakib, you are a one man army of So called minnows, doesn't matter what they said, you are rock man, performing in such pressure it's not easy, those who play cricket they know, it's ez to type whatever but hard to perform being a part of under pressurized team like BD. Gd luck man hats off :)

Congrats Shakib-all the more amazing feat given how weak the rest of the Bangladeshi team is now! A world-class talent who could sleep-walk into any Test team! Perhaps one of the top 5 greatest all-rounders of all time! Mashallah!

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 3:57 GMT)

wow Shakib, what's next? I wish Bangladesh would had 2/3 more quality players like you. But Remember Shakib always had to play against stronger opposition and look at his performance, he is performing constantly. He is the 50% of Bangladesh Cricket Team.

To be honest, at this moment no spinner has such control like him except Vettori. The comparison should not be there between Kallis and Shakib, but Trust me, Kallis did not have to bear the whole team and could not show that much talent in first 4-5 years of his international carrier as Shakib did. Congrats....

The guy has never played either Australia or India. rarely plays away and has unimpressive figures against England etc A joke

Posted by jmcilhinney on (December 23, 2011, 3:35 GMT)

Congratulations to Shakib. Not everyone will agree with the ICC rankings and they are somewhat subjective, but they are a very good guide of recent performance if nothing else. I think that most people would pick Kallis over Shakib for the volume of work in his career but Shakib has obviously played very well latel, and this last game in particular, while Kallis has not been at his absolute best lately. Frankly, while he's still got a lot to offer, you'd have to think that Kallis has passed his peak now, being 36. It's hard to say exactly what effect the relative strength of their teams has on their performances too. I do agree that Kallis likely has less opportunity with the ball, given the strength of the SA bowling attack. He also has never had to face that attack while batting. He's obviously one of the greats though, while Shakib probably still has to prove he can maintain that sort of standard over a long period of time. Great achievement though.

Bangladesh doen't play as many test matches as other countries. Does this mean that he achieved this feat in fewer matches than other allrounders??

Excellent player. If Bangladesh had a couple of players like Shakib they would be very competetive. Unfortunately the likes of Tamim has had a bad phase, and I do not know what happened to that good bowler Mortaza. There is still hope with new players like Nasir playing good cricket. They just need a win to get their confidence back. Well played Shakib and goodluck Bangla. I hope the Tigers roar again.

Congrats to him !!! The Bangla Board must take this information as a bitter pill, as it shows only one consistent performer in their side ... they should develop the talents of other players so they play consistently instead of exhibiting good plays sporadically. Some of their players should be sent to the county circuit, especially the good ones like Tamim, Nasir, Siddiqui,Mortaza (is he out of the injury list?), Mushfiq. If the main counties don't take them, they can atleast play in the minor counties league & get acclimatised to the superb pitches in England & also the technical knowhow of the county coaches. Also some good players like Kapali (gets too few games) & Dhiman Ghosh (where is he?) should be brought back to the team ...

shakib is a real talent. i wish india could have one. a great bow. an allrounder's task is always difficult. jacques and shakib is far better than the so called 'shane watson'. watson lacks enough technical firepower. But the others two have.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 0:28 GMT)

Its very very difficult to perform when the team is not performing well. I believe that when the team is performing well and everybody is contributing to the win, then certainly it much easier to perform if you are an allrounder. Most of the time he is a lone star in the team and has to much to do. He is a great player. I believe he is the only bangladeshi player who can into any side in the world right now.

Posted by   on (December 23, 2011, 0:16 GMT)

Hopefully, other Bangladeshi will follow him.

Shakib would get in every Test side in the world, except England's Test side at home. In the subcontinent, he might get a game as the 2nd spinner.

good stuff shakib i think hes a teriffic player this is a great achievement it just shows that bangladesh do have talented side they just lack patience in key moments during tests, shakib deserves the top spot give him some credit guys, its snobbery it kinda reminds me of andy flower its like how can bangladesh have sumone so talented

I donno why some people comparing Shakib wid Kallis. No 1said Shakib is a Better All rounder than Kallis. Kallis will get back his spot within 1-2 month bcz BD not gonna play any test in nxt 4month. I dont understand how playing for a Bad team made it easier for him to be the No: 1 :O. Shakib barely get any chance to bowl two innings and he has to take more responsibility as a batsman. Lots of people saying Kallis doesnt bowl a lot bcz he is the 4th Bowler. Did u see him bowling recently. He gave away so much run nowadays thats why he doesnt get to bowl a lot. He is more of a batsman now. Good Luck to Shakib and Bangladesh.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 22:30 GMT)

@Dave Brown and @Daisy Tanzin How different your opinions are but I agree to both of your comments. I am happy for Sakib. He deserves it. He is working hard on his performance. Unfortunately he cannot hold it for long time b/c of the amount of cricket BD plays. Best of luck Sakib.

is that a typo or was kallis really the top all rounder for over 10 years in a row??

Posted by Patchmaster on (December 22, 2011, 22:24 GMT)

This guy has to create all his own pressure when bowling, because the others don't help him, as opposed to Broad or Kallis, both of which have better fielders to back them up as well.

Posted by sam_laker on (December 22, 2011, 22:23 GMT)

Isn't his arm bent in this picture? I always think that anyone who wears long sleeves while bowling has something to hide.

Posted by SlogSw33p on (December 22, 2011, 22:18 GMT)

I don't what to be amazed at more, the fact that a Bangladeshi is number 1 in something or that Kallis held the record for over TEN years. Yes, 10.

Posted by woodhaven on (December 22, 2011, 22:10 GMT)

seems like #1 and #7 is his fixed position. #1 in allround and #7 as a bowler. seems like shakib the superman in 4 caegories top ten list

Posted by Tigg on (December 22, 2011, 22:08 GMT)

@Dave Brown Right on the money. While clearly a good player Shakib has reached this spot because bangladesh are so poor. You get points based on the significance of your performances. Therefore scoring runs in tiny totals and taking wickets when few others do boosts your ranking. Kallis is the 4th seamer, so hardly gets the chance to take wickets, and bats in a strong lineup so is unlikely to be the only run scorer. While Shakib doesn't get to bowl at the weakest test side, that only effects his career averages. If you bowl 40+ overs per innings, and are the only batsmen that knows which way round to face then your performances gain bloated siginificance. A matchwinner Shakib is not.

Good for Bangladesh cricket though.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 22:04 GMT)

Shakib thoroughly deserves the number one position. In fact, TWICE previously, Shakib took a five wicket haul and scored 96 (once unbeaten on 96) in the same test match. Had he scored those four additional runs each time, he would have been only the second all rounder ever after Ian Botham to perform this match double of a century and a five-for more than twice. Therefore Shakib's feat against Pakistan was no fluke. A top all rounder, who really deseves that number one rating.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 21:48 GMT)

If Abdul Razzak from Pakistan Bat at No 3,4 or 5 and Bowl 2nd Full Spell in other words If Pakistan Team use him properly there is no one better then him as a Allrounder. Shakib is good but not good enough to be called Number 1 Allrounder to be honest

Posted by CharlesCrasto on (December 22, 2011, 21:27 GMT)

Great Job Shakib. @ all the negative comments: C'mon guys, he reached here because he performed great. Show the man some respect, and recognize his achievement. The great Kallis held this spot for more than 10 years. Nobody can take that away from him. But give Shakib his due. A well wisher from Pakistan.

SHAKIB = NO.1 RANKED TEST ALL ROUNDER IN THE WORLD....... SHAKIB = NO. 1 RANKED ODI ALL ROUNDER IN THE WORLD. WOW!!!!! WOW!!!!! WOW!!!!! What have we got here. UNBELIEVABLE feat. What an honor you've brought for us. BIG BIG BIIIG SALUTE TO YOU BOSS. Proud of you and keep it up. You've shown us what it takes to compete with any team in the world. More honors to follow through SOON from other Tigers ...... STAY TUNED... (NASIR..... GET BUSY)

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 20:58 GMT)

@Dave Brown i totally agree that Kallis is or was a great allrounder, my personal opinion is that he does'nt bowl in tests anymore because he likes to concentrate on his batting and seems a reluctant bowler so its a little unfair if he is still regarded as an all rounder in tests...

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 20:50 GMT)

What makes Shakib even more outstanding is Shakib plays for such a poor team that when he bowls the fielder drops 6/7 catches and he doesn't get support from any other bowler to check the run soo he has to do that and can't bowl at wicket taking line and lenght. If the fielding was properly done I think he would have had at least 50 more wickets. Same goes for his batting, despite being a number 5 batsman he has to play the role of both top order and middle order. Most of the time he comes at crease when the team is at 50/4 or less. Also he run out of batsman at the other end. Also we should consider that he don't get the opportunity to play many tests as many other greats in a year. Sobbers, Kallis they all are legends but whatever(with both bat and ball) Shakib is doing with very little support from his team makes him one of the finest cricketer of all time.People won't agree as he is from a minnow team.Just imagine what he could have done if he wa playing for a decent team !!

Posted by tompuffin on (December 22, 2011, 20:33 GMT)

Good job Shakib! Really surprised that Vettori never got the no.1 spot though, but I guess Kallis' batting has been pretty amazing, but it's Shakib that's now on the rise ~ From an NZ fan

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 20:32 GMT)

To counter an arguement, i would say it is easier to accomulate 'ranking points' being in a poorer side. Kallis is what third, or fourth change bowler for SA and bats four. SA are a stong team so they may only bat once, or twice but chasing a low score. Kallis may only bat once per test, as he did against Sri Lanka. Again this is the same woith his bowling. If they bowl a side out cheaply he may not get a bowl, or just a couple at the end. Kallis can go an entire match without significantly having to contribute. Conversly if you play for Bangledesh and yout their best player you will bat twice and likely bowl a lot of balls. You can only score ranking points if your involved in the game, hence whi it is easier for Shakib to score points. For the record as well he is probably one tenth the player Kallis is. Come back when you have 200 wickets and all the wickets he has.

Posted by Pablo123 on (December 22, 2011, 20:32 GMT)

Well done to him, but no one deserves to be ahead of Kallis in any ranking system. I'm sure this will be a very short lived thing for him, Kallis to go back to the top next week and hold it for another 10 years :)

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 20:31 GMT)

'Shakib Al Hasan' is currently worlds number-one ranked 'allrounder' in both Tests and ODIs. What an AWESOME feat to achieve for a cricketer from a country like Bangladesh that does not have as much cricketing history/infrastructure as most other cricketing heavyweights. It is so surprising to note that none of the Indian cricketers have achieved this dual-feat (since inception of ICC Rankings) and sooo very heartening to see my fav - Shakib, on top!!! ...Shakib - you ROCK!

not sure what the talk of Kallis is all about he was a good allrounder in tests years ago its about time someone had over taken him, as over the last couple of years he was a batsman who bowls a couple of overs... the last time he took 5 wickets in a whole test match was back in 2008 against bangladesh...

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 19:41 GMT)

Kallis No. 1 allrounder for 3696 days? Kallis is a great allrounder, but he has held the #1 spot for over 10 YEARS? That is a bit hard to believe.

Congrats to Shakib on an excellent performance.

You always have to give more weight for those who played in "minnow" like teams. Take for instance this lad. Pakistan knows that the other bowlers aren't that great and can be taken apart for runs so they can just play defensively, while if Shakib was playing for England, the opposition doesn't have that option and must score of Shakib. This is what puts him above Kallis in my opinion for bowling. Kallis already has great bowlers in his team, so when he comes to bowl, players look to score off him and usually make mistakes, giving Kallis wickets. Same thing with Warne vs Murali. People used to defend almost all of Murali's balls since he had no support, while Warne had the pressure and support from McGrath, Lee, Gillepsie, Stuart Clark, etc. Plus Warne didn't have to bowl to his teammates (strongest in the world), while Murali did. Thats why in my books Murali>Warne and Tendulkar>Lara and Shakib>Kallis (bowling only, batting is not even comparable)

Posted by cricPassion2009 on (December 22, 2011, 19:05 GMT)

Very happy to note Shakib's rise. Though it is too early to say, Indian subcontinent is seeing another good allrounder after the legends Kapil/Imran/Wasim/Ranatunga. Carry on Shakib. Good luck.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 19:05 GMT)

Shakib is perhaps the best cricketer at present. But he has a long way to go if he has to become like Sir Gary Sobers or Jacques Kallis. Shakib is not a top class batsman, but he is surely a top class bowler. It is not very easy to perform well for a poor test and ODI team like Bangladesh. The rest of Shakib's teammates are too weak mentally. Bangladesh plays ONLY 4-5 tests a year, where South Africa plays atleast 8-10 matches. So it's really a remarkable achievement that he has gained the top spot even after playing so few matches. (Shakib has put an end to Kallis's consecutive reign at the ICC test allrounder where Kallis ruled for 3696 days, or 10 years, 1 month and 16 days)

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 19:01 GMT)

Truly nice to see a player from a lower ranked team, come thru like this. I suppose our Kallis could not remain on top foever. Congrats to Shakib!

Jeez, whats with negative comments ? just because Shakib is a bangladeshi ? Doesn't that give him more opportunity to do well , since the team almost solely depends upon him ? Bangladeshi or not, Shakib's a gem of a cricket player and we should all respect that; he proved that in county when he helped worcestershire get promoted, and also in the IPL.

Posted by USAPakCricFollower on (December 22, 2011, 18:31 GMT)

Congratulations to Shakib. Well deserved, however I don't understand people saying it is more difficult for him playing in a weaker team. As far as the performance is concerned a stronger team's player has to play against the same other teams as Bangaldesh, the only team Bangla does not play is itself. So for Bangla players it is no different than players from say Pakistan. Nothing taken away from his performance which is commendable, however he does not get extra credit for playing in a weaker team when it comes to rankings.

Posted by Sudarshanj on (December 22, 2011, 18:28 GMT)

Yes,,,Shakib is god gifted but the Lotus Kamal is not perfect for BCB...Bring back Sabir Hossain Chowdhury to BCB...Who is the main architecture of today's BD cricket. Mr. Sabir dried filed in Kualalampur during that ICC tournament.....I do not understand why Prime Minister of BD appoint Lotus there, He is ruining cricket involving politics there.....It will be really shame if we see a odd people go to ICC top....

not sure if he's better than Kallis, but he's definitely been deserving of the top 2 places for the last couples of years now. His bowling is better than Kallis at the moment (kallis is more of a 5th bowler while Shakib is main strike), but batting I'd have to give to Kallis

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 18:02 GMT)

honestly speaking... shakib is a true pressure bearer. the whole country depends on him to get a win. he is the key baller, key batsman, key fielder, former captain...all in all. cricket has got another true calm hero, congratulation shakib..

those who r confused about rating system, must know that it completely depends on players' present performance... no doubt, kallis or vettori r far ahead from shakib so far but at present Shakib is the best... He is the most consistent player of BD. so, he deserves it..... but, i think, kallis can be back within shrt tym during the prsnt series against SL... bt, Shakib should be praised without confusion for his incredible all round performance....

Posted by BravoBravo on (December 22, 2011, 17:52 GMT)

Congratulations Mr. Shakib Al Hasan, you make BD team a proud one!!! Carry it on. @N.Sundararajan: I agree that ICC ranking is flawed whether it is for individual players or a team (Test, ODI). The most living proof that ICC ranking is flawed: the down fall of IND in tests, how they have been mauled and hauled by ENG and dethroned from their #1 Test ranking in a very short time.

Posted by dulabari on (December 22, 2011, 17:46 GMT)

It is important to note that Shakib does not get a chance to play against a team like Bangladesh and he bowls to defend small scores. I think as a bowler Shakib is better than Kallis, but batsman Kallis is probably better than Shakib. Also Shakib comes to bat when Bangladesh is 50 for 4 or so, but Kallis bats with much less pressure.

Posted by Razeeb7866 on (December 22, 2011, 17:45 GMT)

Shakib Rockssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Posted by Baundele on (December 22, 2011, 17:45 GMT)

Playing in a weaker team is not easy. You are always facing better bowlers during your batting, and you have to bowl against better batsmen at often odd match situations. So, it is a tremendous achievement for Shakib. Bangladesh already have the players to compete and win against top oppositions. But the management is rubbish. They need to find the right combination and right players. For example, Dhiman Ghosh is the country's best wicket keeper and he is also scoring lot of runs in the domestic cricket; but Mushy is persisted with the keeping duty and misses 4 or 5 catches/stumpings in each innings. Cricket is a little funny game, one or two tweaks here and there can do wonders. And UDRS is a must to prevent Asoka, Tarapore and the co.!

Shakib is without doubt a good allround cricketer but he is not even one-tenth of the player Kallis is. Seeing the top 10 list, there is definitely a dearth of good all-rounders in world cricket today.

Posted by chilled_avenger on (December 22, 2011, 16:22 GMT)

Well done Shakib! He definately deserve to be the No.1 Allrounder among the current lot. I hope he keeps on improving and gives more of these solid performances! Although I am astonished to hear that Kallis held the No.1 Allrounder ranking for more than 10 years since that means Flintoff or Vettori were never ranked No.1 Allrounder in their career! I believe that Kallis had to give up that spot because he has reduced bowling in the last 2-3 years and concentrated on his batting. Kallis has taken 20 wickets in last 21 tests at 50+ average since 2009 so I guess its not unjustified that Shakib has toppled him. Anyways best wishes to both Kallis & Shakib...........

Its funny people are calling to remove Bangladesh's test status while one of them is the top test all round in the whole universe, this should be a good enough slap for them, Bangla just needs a couple more such players, Tamim is already very good player so be a little patient with Bangladesh, they will come good in no time. Congratulations to Shakib he truely deserves this.

It is no co-incidence that Shakib got this title after being removed from captaincy. Some players need to be not-captain to perform great e.g. Sachin Tendulker. Others need to be captain to be great e.g. Sangakkara, Dhoni, and Misbah. For others it does not matter e.g. Afridi.

Wow - going ahead of Kallis is really a serious achivement and what a player Sakib has been and also still very young. He needs someone to bat with and he would make a lot more runs. This guy is going to take Bangladesh to the next level.

Posted by CricLook on (December 22, 2011, 15:32 GMT)

Its true that Kallis is far ahead of Shakib statistically both with bat and ball. It only shows how difficult to displace a player as Kallis quality which itself is a achievement for Shakib apart from this no. 1 all rounder spot. The way he has to fight all the time in a weak team makes it even harder to achieve anything. Congrats Shakib...!..Inspire your team to follow your path thus create a cricketing legacy......

Great player, but absolutely no support from rest of the team. The problem with Bangladesh is their players lack maturity. Too many even after playing for years do not learn (Ashraful, Tamim). They need to understand the difference between Test and ODI. Keep up the great work Shakib.

Posted by leftisbest on (December 22, 2011, 14:55 GMT)

Goes to show how great Kallis has been, and how small the pool of genuine world class all rounders there has been for a while. I guess Flintoff may have got close to toppling him during his golden period of 2004 - 2005, and Vettori when he was captain?

truly deserving candidate. In any other team, he might have made a real name for himself, by winning matches as well, but here no is really supporting him

despite playing less test matches, shakib has proven himself to be the NO 1 genuine all rounder in both forms of the game. Unlike Kallis or Watson, or Broad he is not specialized only on his bowling or batting rather he is deft at doing anything on the cricket field

Freaking 3696 days? Go on, you genius. I ve always wondered why he hasnt been passed on the mantle of Sir Gary if he has outscored, outbowled and outcaught him long back. The numbers speak for themselves... particularly in the era where all rounders are as hard to come by as blue moons.

Though kallis's dip in form in last 3 matches caused him to lost number 1 place, its a great achievment for shakib. Remember he plays in team which loses most matches in innings distance mostly due to batsmen's fault, so he gets only one innings to bowl, he plays in one of the worse batting lineup of the world, and also bd fielders drop more catches than anyone, still he maintains such great record. Congrats shakib, you are our pride.

So wait. Kallis was the number one allrounder for more than 10 years!!!!!!???

Someone please confirm.

Congratulations Shakib! Bravo... if only a couple of players could truly take inspiration from you. Being a Pakistani, I feel immense pride in someone as hardworking and gifted as Shakib ascends to the mantle. And I also feel all the Bangla-bashers should take a moment and reflect that eventhough as a team the Tigers are not where they should have been, but individual feats like these show that how seriously the Bangladeshis take their cricket and imagine where they'll be 10 years from now.

Lone tiger of Bangladesh Cricket, take a bough....

Congrats Shakib - really a great, great achievement! May be he will inspire many more from Bangladesh. Love this guy and his attitude on the field. An asset to any team that he plays for - Bangladesh, KKR, etc. I really believe that KKR missed a few tricks when they dropped him for few matches during the IPL. Whats more praiseworthy is that this guy is equally good in T20, ODIs and Tests which is some achievement! Kudos! (From an Indian cricket fan)....

Shakib deserves this . . . he is nothing less than outstanding, but Kallis will be back!

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 13:53 GMT)

wow!! You deserve it! Our future cricketers finally got someone to follow.

Quite a funny Rating system ! Shakib is no doubt a good player---but for him to overtake Jack Kallis is definitely showing up a flawed system of ranking all-rounders !

Let us learn not to put too much store by the Rankings---

he is the ..Real Tiger ....well done dude....

well done to Shakib for his great performances in a struggling team. He is a class cricketer but you can't really use these rankings to compare players overall, as his numbers when compared to Kallis' don't really measure up. He is still of immense value to his team though and a credit to the game. cheers

My God!!! I can't believe this...

congrates brother,,,,,,,,it's fantastic to watch you,,,,,,,,,,,,,great allrounder of the any formate of the game,,,,,,,,the one and only of bangladesh cricket....

Not very much surprised, it will happened today or tomorrow,he is one of the finest player from World now. We all Bangladeshi are very very proud of our pride , Tiger Shaaaaaaaaaaaaakiiiiiiiiib Al Hasan. Hopefully he achieved in future a lot for him & for Team Bangladesh. Long live Shakib!

Sorry state of allrounders in Test cricket

Posted by salman_0902 on (December 22, 2011, 13:36 GMT)

atleast there is something positive for Bangladesh

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 13:32 GMT)

Shame on Sri Lankan Cricket! Remember how easy we took Bangladesh?? And now, one of their committed players has become the number 1 . . . . Hope at least now our players will take the matter seriously and play as ONE team or else in the future, I am sure Bangladesh will defeat us in a TEST match. Our Government has to do a major part (best thing is if they all can stop putting their fingers into Sports). DISAPPOINTING!

Posted by   on (December 22, 2011, 13:32 GMT)

Absolutely brilliant! Something we Bangladeshis will take after those hopeless performances! Gooooo Shakib!
