Shakib undecided on knee surgery

Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that his left knee requires surgery but he hasn't decided when to perform the operation. Earlier this month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had declined him permission to play in the Sri Lanka Premier League as a precautionary measure.

"The problem (in my left knee) won't be fixed without an operation. But I haven't decided when it will be," Shakib told Bangla daily Prothom Alo. "It may be after the World Cup (T20) but if it means that I will miss the West Indies series, I will do it afterwards."

Shakib is part of the Twenty20 squad for three matches in Trinidad & Tobago next month, before heading to Sri Lanka to play the ICC World Twenty20. He is also set to appear for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Champions League T20 from October 13 before the home series against West Indies in mid-November. Further in the 2012-13 season, Shakib will be playing in domestic leagues, including the Bangladesh Premier League as well as tours with Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and the IPL to round things off.

Dr Debashish Chowdhury, the BCB doctor, said that Shakib has been diagnosed with degenerated meniscus, but it won't put him out of action very soon. "The latest MRI suggests that he is suffering degenerated meniscus. Usually it is caused due to impact, but in Shakib's case it is due to overuse. He's a spinner so the knee has to twist that way," Dr Chowdhury said.

@ExtremeSpeed...I think you don't Remember we are 2 times U19 world champions and you have never been the finalist of it!...agreed that we din't perform well in this U19 world cup and you guys really played good cricket congrats on that but that doesn't make you guys the best team in the world!...talking about afridi well he was injured so therefore was not the part of the team in the 2nd odi against Australia and guess what we still beat Aus quite comfortably WITHOUT AFRIDI...so you better not worry about that and we don't rely on afridi batting anymore.Best of luck to Shakib hope he get well soon.

Its really a shocking news for all the BAN fans all around the world.......But after reading the article it is found that the injury is not that much serious but its a alarming one.......This is the time SHAKIB must consider his playing preferences after playing for his country......International cricket, Country cricket, IPL,CLT, SLPL and so on.....The problem is that T20 requires more than 100% in the match....Last IPL KKR played 14 matches in 30 days plus extensive travels throughout IND......SHAKIB was part of every single match (best 11 or sideline).....This just cant be happening every year........SHAKIB must have to think about it before get into big injury that might take best of his skill as it happened to few greats before......Hope he gets well soon..ROAR TIGERS ROAR>>>>>>

He doesn't have time to get his operation done after the Port of Spain Tour because world cup T20 World Cup starts on 18th, and after that in November there is Zimbabwe series, I think he should not go on the Zimbabwe Series after T2o world cup and get his operation done as soon as possible.

  • on August 31, 2012, 14:08 GMT

why does he hav to play CLt20 and WI series??? its better to do the operation after WCt20!! cos its better to lose that series than to lose the best player of the team..btw he cud also do do it before WCt20 but ofcourse WC is important for a player n nation!!

@WickyRoy.pakilover - !"Bangladesh with shakib=minnow, bangladesh without shakib=associate membr," - And your point is exactly? This is an article about Shakib's injury. Minnows were good enough to be ranked higher than a decline Pakistan in the Under-19 tournament hope it goes well and pray Afridi finds his form against Australia instead of going out for another 'golden duck' :D

I think after westindies series is the appropriate time.

  • Nicholas94 on August 30, 2012, 12:24 GMT

Terrible News.. Hope he doesn't stay out for that long. I wish him a full recovery when he undergoes surgery.

  • Great_Sport_Games on August 30, 2012, 12:24 GMT

As an Indian fan must say Bangladesh are lucky to have such a class player very underrated hope he's okay and does well but surprised he didn't play as many IPL games for KKR even though in the games he has played won a few man of match awards.

If you read the article carefully, the injury is minor but if left too late will aggravate the injury therefore may get worse to treat as he said himself its overdue now so there's a risk of an element there but hopefully it will be sorted soon. Bangladesh needs the worlds best all-rounder to compete for the national team.

  • on August 30, 2012, 12:07 GMT

Well the knee injury doesn't look that serious as in terms of long term injury but it does require treatment and I agree that the best way to solve this is after the West Indies series because without him, Bangladesh will struggle to win their games. Forget the Champions League its a meaningless tournament anyway but if it also means missing Bangladesh's domestic season and BPL then so be it because International matches early part of next year against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are far more important. Also I liked in the article when he said if his potential surgery will cause him to miss Indies series then he'll do it afterwards, that's a great attitude to have great player he is.
