A new four-day cricket tournament called the Bangladesh Cricket League will kick off on December 27. The franchise-based tournament will be played between four teams, split by regions.

Walton Central Zone, comprising players only from Dhaka Division and Dhaka Metro, Prime Bank South Zone (Khulna Division and Barisal Division), Islami Bank East Zone (Sylhet Division and Chittagong Division) and BCB North Zone (Rangpur Division and Rajshahi Division) will take part in the competition. Three of the four teams have been bought by companies but the fourth, North Zone, will be run by the BCB because it had no takers.

The BCB has not yet initiated the process of obtaining first-class status for the BCL. The National Cricket League (NCL) still remains the country's only first-class competition.

The national selectors have picked 80 cricketers for the franchises to choose from, specifically from their regions. The tournament will be held at two venues, Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur and the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, and will run till January 11. The rest of the tournament will be completed after the BPL.

From the outside looking in, whether franchises are the way to for First Class cricket is an interesting question. But good on the BCB for restructuring the First Class scene. Four teams should provide for all games being high quality, and the main things Bangladesh need are high quality FIrst Class cricket domestically and regular Test matches for the national team. With boards everywhere focussing so heavily on junk cricket, its good to see at least one board is also looking at what can be done in the true form of the game.

@Sinhaya-2:-Yes imminent for Sri Lanka a declining team v a rising team :P

Keep going...need more competitive first class matches with good pitches.. BCB should focus on our TEST cricket that is the way to go in right direction....without performing in TEST level we can not convince world cricket that we can be a major power in world cricket. Please do not blame players..we have everything just need to focus on right areas...this BPL, DPL can only bring money, power but quality lies their...see INDIA ..how they are struggling after successful addition of IPL ..

I like the way Bangladesh Cricket as a whole is going, future looks fantastic. We can already see critics of Bangladesh scared.

Our original one NCL is just of poor quality I mean they use fast bowlers for like 15-20 overs in the game and the rest if spin. I hope this one really goes well but I pretty much doubt it knowing how much these people behind BCB are disinterested in Test Cricket.

very good for bd cricket

I heard these will be day/night games and pink ball will be used. Test matches can now be played in night now can they? so this is a good test to see will it actually work.

@TheRisingTeam: Well whitewash is imminent, and with the positive energy of my brother sinhaya, we will rise on top

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (December 24, 2012, 14:44 GMT)

@Sinhaya-2:- I'm aware of that under-19 Asia Cup earlier in the year but you're forgetting that those matches didn't count as list A and a lot of our young players in that tournament i.e. Anamul Haque were missing. But lets not be premature and predict our series like that because no one knows the outcome. Sri Lanka are favourites but just don't underestimate Bangladesh. Infact, I dare your team to not use the experience Sri Lanka trio so we can see which team is going up and down in the years ahead. The only decent young players of Sri Lanka I have seen so far are Chandimal and Matthews but the rest don't look that promising.

This is good news. Long form cricket needs to become more ingrained in Bangladeshi youth cricket players. The lack of long forms of cricket in early stage cricket development in Bangladesh is why Bangladeshi players tend not to value their wickets, and this is precisely why young Bangladeshis appear on the world stage and repeatedly give away their wickets cheaply in trying to play rash shots. Four day cricket is vital so that Bangladeshis improve their mental approach to the game. First class cricket needs to become a regular, year round thing in Bangladesh.

@Sinhaya-2: See brother, when did we lose 5 in a row? leave it, we will beat them 5 in a row in february

Posted by   on (December 24, 2012, 13:43 GMT)

bcb should give chance young players in bpl and other high leavel cricket

No List A competition till 2 years why ???? Please BCB arrange ListA tournament instead of club cricket either try to earn ListA status for club cricket. Our FC competitions is not well organized yet. No need to arrange two different FC tournament in a calender year. Eight NCL teams with 2 (it could be 3 when national and A team players will go for international duty)foreign players (minimum 90 FC+ListA match experience in England, Australia & South African Domestic Cricket either Test experience) could play twice with home & away system. The companies could be owner of 50 % with divisional cricket association. Every teams should have A team, Academy team, U-18, U-16, U-14 and U-12 teams. I think this will be the appropriate domestic competition for us.

Most of the BD cricket fan talk much..... way too much. Do they always have to fight with Indian, Pakistani, & Sri Lankan fans?? Sri Lankan fans are always supportive to BD cricket....instead of appreciating that some BD funs are getting involved in pointless arguments. Really shameful. Arafat, from Bangladesh.

@TheRisingTeam, sorry I disagree. Yes we lost to Bangladesh in the U19 world cup this year, but we beat you all in the game in Malaysia in June this year. See this link http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/567252.html What do you mean by beating us in the last 5 U19 matches? I cant recall losing 5 in a row to Bangladehs.

Good luck Bangladesh from a Sri Lankan fan. Your emergence is extremely useful for cricket by all means.

A srilankan is on this page, and they r thinking about our Team and they through us challenge, this proves we r becoming a better team. Sankara play cricket for long time and we play cricket for only 35 to 40 years. definitely srilanka, india and pakistan r our senior team and more powerful then us, but I am hopeful by 2015 we'll become equal powerful as these 3 teams.

@ Sinhaya-2 on (December 24 2012, 04:23 AM GMT)--bro, cricket is a game of uncertainty.so before a seriez no one can tell waht will happen next but wht anyone do just having guess.for example, before windies-bd odi seriez mr. sammy told dat he is gonna win 5-0 but ultimately he lost the series.. r8 nw i think the difference between lanka n bd in odi n t20 format is 50-50 i guess.. on test seriesi guess lanka hv the edge but nowadays the difference between these two teams come so little in ckt power.. im not so gud in english but hopefully u got it:-)

Thats really a awesome move by the BCB...........At least they have taken the initiatives to do well in TEST.........Im really happy for our emerging TEST players.......Wish them all the luck and don't miss out the opportunities .......... ROAR TIGERS ROAR>>>>

Who will be our Next Head Coach??? I like to see Shaun Pollock, SA or Saurav Ganguly, Ind or Stephen Flemming, Nz here. We need a great cricket brain to develop the Cricket Nation.

Franchise based league will good attempt, we need the finance to develop the Cricket but they should make their own infrastructure, as we know Prime Bank Ltd. is going to make their own Stadium in coming day will need more Cricket Brains to develop their Academy what should follow by other franchises.

We really failed to get some very good cricket coaches in Age Level 13, 15, 17 as we had some Srilanka's before. Even we will have to use some basic coaching by legends coachs in short time programs in age level will come in our favor. Hope we all remember the present team came from that 3 Srilankan's (Kalpage & 2 others) & Academy Coach Mackins Aus.

@TheRisingTeam: No you are wrong, we didn't have this trio when we won the world cup in 1996, that was a different team, that time also we used to beat you, lets see in february!!

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (December 24, 2012, 5:44 GMT)

@Sinhaya-2:- Yes I agree with you if you still include the Sri Lanka experience trio but take them out, Sri Lanka are nothing obviously are declining even our under-19 youth team destroyed you in the last 5 matches so the future is clear. First Dravid then Strauss then Laxman and recently Ponting and Sachin, the trend is continuing if you can see so your replacements have an extremely tough time doing the fantastic job your trio have done. Don't forget the last time Ban-Sri met, you lost and that included your experience trio :P

It sounds good important that we take first class Cricket seriously but what you could do to make the matches interesting is have the matches at Mirpur turn like mad and the matches at Bogra fast and bouncy so that our players will benefit from it greatly. Also a great idea to hold the remaining of these matches right after BPL so our regular players can get plenty of preparation time for Sri Lanka tests. But we still need to revamp the current NCL as its still of bad quality.

I really appreciate this initiative by BCB. As long as we play 4 day games we will defiantly improve a lot in test arena. & for those players who miss out BPL (specially the medium pace bowlers) will get their chance in BCL.

Posted by Solace1 on (December 24, 2012, 4:23 GMT)

No problem, our lankan team will still be stronger when you tour us, so we will win!!
