BCB retains Mushfiqur as captain

20

Mushfiqur Rahim has been retained as Bangladesh's captain, after he accepted the job following a discussion with BCB president Nazmul Hassan. The Bangladesh board handed Mushfiqur - who had resigned his post following Bangladesh's ODI series loss to Zimbabwe in May - the captaincy till December 31 this year, meaning he will be in charge till the home series against New Zealand that begins in October.

Mushfiqur, in the days following his resignation, had admitted to making a "mistake". The board had said they would conduct an investigation into the matter, but it was ultimately Mushfiqur's discussion with Hassan that produced the decision.

"The tenures of Mushfiqur Rahim and [vice-captain] Mahmudullah ended recently," the BCB's media committee chairman, Jalal Yunus, said. "Mushfiqur has talked to the president, there he agreed to lead Bangladesh. He and Mahmudullah have been given extension as captain and vice-captain till December 31, 2013."

The decision to keep Mushfiqur in the job, provided he agreed to it, was always a certainty, given that he had led Bangladesh to an ODI series win over West Indies last year, a Test win over Zimbabwe, drew a Test against Sri Lanka and also secured an ODI series draw against the same opponents. Mahmudullah remains his deputy despite a run of low scores in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

The captaincy issue was one of several discussion points during the BCB's ad-hoc executive committee's meeting on Wednesday, which lasted more than six hours. Another major decision to come out of the meeting was the confirmation of Shane Jurgensen as head coach till the 2015 World Cup. Jurgensen was made the interim coach last year, after Richard Pybus quit the job in October. He is considered to be a calming influence on the team.

Bangladesh's three-man selection panel will be in charge till September this year. The tenure of chief selector Akram Khan, Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar expired on June 30, but they will select the squad for the New Zealand series. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the selection panel is unlikely to change even after September. The board's cricket operations committee did not propose an expansion of the selection panel to a five-member committee, as they had talked about doing recently.

Undoubtedly, Mushfiqur Rahim is a very good leader and is of course a smart decision to still have him as a captain. We've a good batting line up with consistency being the issue. With practice, this problem will be minimized and solved too hopefully. As far as bowling attack is concerned, spinners have never been a problem. We are heavily specialised in that department . Wat we lack is super pace attack. I hope the selectors are well aware of it. Good luck, tigers!

Decision to retain M. Rahim as a captain is good. But it will do good if team management try with few emerging players like Anamuls , Mominuls along with Tamim,Nasir,Shakib,Mahmudulah. It is very bad to see that players who failed to show their talents regularly such as Ashraful ,Nafees, given chances regularly. Players around 20 years should have been chances. Bangladesh have nothing to lose , so they should try to build a team for future.

Its OK Mushfiq is back as captain but he must stop talking too much in the field - its really annoying and against the tradition of cricket. He can show signals to fielders where to go. Praising bowlers for all the good balls is also not needed. He can learn from Mat, MS and Sanga. He misses lot of good catches and he need to reduce the numbers. Because of his height, his diving ability is also limited and miss lot of catching opportunities which other keepers would have caught. Bangladesh need world class wicket keeper and more tall players.

May be this good decision .......

I believe this is a good decision. Mushfiq is the right man to lead Bangladesh right now. He has enjoyed reasonable success by leading his team to the Final of the Asia Cup 2012 and a series win against the Windies. His attitude is positive and the players look up to him so he's the right man for the job, if you ask me.

Right decision under the circumstances. Mushfiqur can improve his chances as a leader if he can perform a little better as a batsman. He is the key to hold middle/late order batting when the top order fails (which is often). Shakib should bat at 4 in pretty much all formats.

well good for bangladesh.. i am indian but still i admire them alot.. looking at them remember the great Indian team in the early 2000's under ganguly just like shakib and then none other than rahim who is Bangladesh's Msd all the best BD expecting more than fireworks in wt20 '14

Good decision. Don't think we have a better option at the moment. He has done well as a Captain and performed consistently too

  • on July 3, 2013, 14:59 GMT

December is not too far away. I wonder why they decided to extend his Captaincy until then. He is a very reliable bat; done well as skipper. Yet the BCB will give him the reins for just a few short months. The guys at the BCB are on a power trip it seems.

  • Warm_Coffee on July 3, 2013, 14:24 GMT

Smart move by BCB to keep Rahim and extend SJ till after the World Cup. This should be Bangladesh's ODI 11 for the next 2 years and no more tries failures like Jahurul, Ashraful, Raqibul etc because our batting top order collapses because of them. Tamim, Shamsur, Anamul, Shakib, Nasir, Rahim, Mahmudullah, Zia/Gazi, Mashrafe, Razzak and Shafiul.

  • TheRisingTeam on July 3, 2013, 14:13 GMT

Good decision and hopefully it will be extended beyond that. Rahim needs to learn to control his emotions, he's 25 and one of the most experience players in the team and will be very important for the next 5 years. Bangladesh Cricket is positive now and win, lose, draw whatever should not bother Rahim, the team and management as long as Bangladesh team is putting in good performances and making the opposition work for their wins, that's all that matters for now. Its good to see our players getting a good break and making the most of it by going on holidays, spending time with friends and families and others practising their cricketing skills and playing domestically abroad because a fresh Bangladesh team is vital in the next 2 years since it will be the busiest for Bangladesh Cricket.

Bangladesh Cricket revolves around Mushfiqur, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal and now Nasir Hossain also. Few more like them would definitely boost Cricket in BD.
