Abahani bowler leaks record 39 runs in an over

ESPNcricinfo staff

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club picked up a fourth win in the Dhaka Premier Division, beating Abahani Limited by 28 runs in Mirpur. It was Abahani's fourth loss in five games, and their seamer Alauddin Babu's 39-run over became a world record.

After Dhanmondi were put into bat, they were off to a sound start despite losing Junaid Siddique early. Jahurul Islam, who made 60, added 89 runs for the second wicket with Dilshan Munaweera. They lost a few wickets in the middle overs, but a final onslaught put them right on top.

Elton Chigumbura, the Zimbabwe allrounder, hammered 50 runs in the last 2.5 overs, including the 39 from the last over of the innings bowled by 21-year-old Alauddin. A promising seam-bowling allrounder who was discovered at 17, Babu had played for Bangladesh's Under-19 side in 2010, before graduating to senior cricket. He had also spent time in the National Cricket Academy and plays first-class cricket for Rangpur Division.

He gave away five off the first ball which was a no-ball, and then bowled a wide. Off the next five balls, Chigumbura alternated between sixes and fours, before Alauddin bowled another wide and was finished off with a six. Chigumbura finished with an unbeaten 69 off 54 balls with four fours and five sixes. Alauddin ended up conceding a whopping 93 in his 10 overs, but not all the Abahani bowlers were this profligate. Al-Amin Hossain took four wickets for 38 runs.

Alauddin's 39 was the most runs conceded in an over in List A cricket, beating the Netherlands legspinner Dan van Bunge, who leaked six sixes in an over to Herschelle Gibbs in the 2007 World Cup. It is also the most in Dhaka Premier Division history, beating Naeem Islam's 36 (six sixes) off Marshall Ayub in the 2009-10 season, also at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Abahani were deflated by Chigumbura's finish, but their second-wicket partnership between Shahriar Nafees and Tharanga Paranavitana added some solidity. The pair put together exactly 100 runs, but the rest of the Abahani batsmen couldn't hold on to the advantage. Mosaddek Hossain managed 43, but that was not enough as Dhanmondi bowled them out for 254.

Offspinner Abul Bashar took four wickets while seamer Shafiul Islam picked up three.

@kunal25 - lol you're not making much sense. Zol is not an all-rounder, Mosaddek is so he wins hands down over him plus a year younger so try hard all you like. I remember Unmukt Chand was being hyped by you guys but he doesn't look like getting anyhwere close to the national team now :) and Zol is the same. Wonder who is next overhyped player? :) :P good to see you're so interested in a minnow team. Something is bothering you.

@Siddharthaa87:- Unlike an overrated team like India, at least countries like Bangladesh offer contracts to players from the lesser nations and can earn a decent living as well. Even a UAE cricketer named Saqib Ali has been offered a DPL contract to come and play check it out :P So I don't think Elton will at all agree with your silly comment :) hopefully you Indian fans are still not hurt by the thrashing we gave your team last time out because believe me there will be more to come :P :) till then good luck!

@smack-DAT you are exaggerating no one saying that Bangladesh is the best team in the world and yes Shakib was best all rounder in the world for quite a while(3 years)and still 2nd best all rounder in the world ( he could be the #1 if he is playing more International for his country) and Mosaddek Hossain is the potential cricketer for the country and he has to grow and learn more. @Siddharthaa87 Chigumbura looks like come to play cricket and knocking some bad balls around the park and @Legaleagle don,t you think you should appreciate Bangladeshi clubs to hire Zim cricketers so they can earn more money which is Zim board is not willing to help financially ?

Bangladesh is a great Cricket playing nation, BAN cricket team is the world best team, Champion of Champions ( So what if they dont have trophies in their cabinet!!) they were the runners up in Asia cup!! Shakib is the all time best all rounder and the best thing happened to Cricket. Mosaddek Hossain will be the world greatest batsmen, he will break all the records including highest runs, centuries, and even the world record of Sir Don 99.94. So all Bangla fans,Happy now!!!

Why some of Indians are so happy for this record by an unknown bd bowler!!!! Before this record there was 3 Indian bowlers on top 5 list. I understand the frustration of some Indian friends as they are going down from 2nd(DB Ravi Teja) , 4th (Sukvinder Singh )and 5th (ASK Varma ) position to 3rd,5th and 6th.below the previous top record 36 (x6) HH Gibbs (36) off DLS van Bunge South Africa v Netherlands St. Kitts 2006/07 35 (64wd6666) RV Gomez (35) off DB Ravi Teja Hyderabad (India) v Kerala Chennai 2009/10 34 (5x6 1x4) IVA Richards (34) off DA Graveney Somerset v Gloucestershire Taunton 1977 34 (4x6 2x4) SC Ganguly (32)(nb 2) off Sukvinder Singh India v India B Chennai 2000/01 32 (4x6 2x4) PV Manikantan (32) off ASK Varma Kerala v Andhra Chennai 2007/08

It is funny how every post about Bangladesh eventually become a place for Indo-Bangla war. Indian fans often complain that we compare our players with their but the truth is it is always one of the Indian fan who start comparing and when Bangladeshi fan answer back they start crying over it. People like Legaleagle, Albert will be in every single post saying something rubbish. if they really dont like our team than why on earth they are in every single post about us? Scared of something huh. Legaleagle U should be more worried about your team. Our players are far better than over hyped Pak players and Indian fans no wonder your team is the best team in Asia at the moment but u never know what future hold for you. So rather than trying to create a fight just enjoy the game before BCCI send ur team to other country where they get thrashed like the 8-0. (Admin Please Post this)

Bangladesh must be very popular team to talk about ! no wonder why on earth people from different cricket playing nations are concerning more and more on Bangladesh domestic league? I do understand frustration of Pak supporter no foreign players are willing to play in their domestic league and for Zim supporters you should be very happy and proud playing in Bangladesh. And some Indian supporter should concentrate on there colorful 20/20!

@jimbond on (October 2, 2013, 6:42 GMT) TEST status for IRE???Where does it come from???For the sake of the argument i would agree with you that Bangladesh is a pathetic team. But they have got very good cricketing facilities;such as-stadiums,plenty of first class professional players and most important thing financially sound cricket board. But what IRE have???Simply nothing...Their players even play at the England ground doesnt matter how good they play as they are handful amount in numbers...So kindly don't make yourself fool by thinking others fool.

Why the Indian"s outlook is so narrow! Cricket is a funny & uncertain game. Several times India was the victim of this uncertainty & beaten by Bangladesh! That"s why maximum Indian are not well wisher of Bangladesh, I think. Bangladeshi Cricket has been going on their own way. They are proving themselves gradually. India haven"t invited Bangladesh in their soil still now. I think India is afraid of if they loose any game against Bangladesh in their own soil.
