Bangladesh's preliminary squad

  • Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, Mahmudullah, Shamsur Rahman, Tamim Iqbal, Muktar Ali, Sohag Gazi, Rubel Hossain, Anamul Haque, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Nasir Hossain, Arafat Sunny, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mithun Ali, Shafiul Islam, Taijul Islam, Abdur Razzak, Marshall Ayub, Imrul Kayes, Jubair Hossain, Al-Amin Hossain, Shuvagata Hom, Robiul Islam

Legspinner Jubair Hossain has been included in Bangladesh's preliminary squad for the tour of the West Indies, the biggest surprise among the 25 players named. Jubair, an Under-19 player, will now report to trainer Mario Villavarayen on July 1, with the rest of the preliminary squad, to begin preparing for the mid-August tour.

Although he didn't play a game in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, Jubair impressed the Bangladesh management as a nets bowler over the last few months, with several players, coaches and selectors taking an interest in him.

Jubair is of short stature, comes off a few steps and whips up his arms but, deceptively, doesn't bowl quickly. He slows the pace down and lets the ball drift and turn.

He is an interesting choice for two reasons. Firstly, the Bangladesh selectors have been, in recent years, reluctant to pick someone so inexperienced. Secondly, his elevation leaves question marks over what first-class performances mean; someone like specialist legspinner Noor Hossain, who took 21 wickets in this year's first-class cricket, having also taken 20 and 22 in the previous two years, has been leapfrogged. Jubair has not played first-class cricket yet.

Bangladesh have never picked a specialist legspinner in Test matches while only Wahidul Gani, famous for mentoring Mohammad Ashraful and Shahriar Nafees as a youth coach, played a solitary ODI in the 1980s.

B'desh team management & captain distroy Tamim batting. They want Tamim bats not his natural style batting slowly & This effect Tamim batting performance. In 2009-10 captain & management let Tamim play his natural style. And everyone known how amazing he playing that time....

Imrul & Shafiul should get chance in main squad. They were impressive during BD A tour of WI. Inform Imrul will b better choice than Tamim now. He got a FC ton in WI. Shafiul can b a choice for shorter version. He performed well in WI. Al-Amin & Taskin have no experience of playing in away condition. Only one of them should b in main XI.

A tour to Europe some 5 ODIs against Ireland and Scotland would be great right before that Caribbean tour so they are prepared a bit plus would be a big plus for world cup season next year due to the similar conditions. But Bangladesh has a tough ask of drawing even 1 test match in the Caribbean unless there's rain to be frank. Just look how our A team played there recently and that too included players like Shamsur, Mominul, Robiul etc all whom recently played/play in main squad. We have the talent but lack the applications to gel as a team unless the BCB is willing to act on that now.

Surprised to see Tamim Iqbal still in the squad. He desperately needs a break. Another failure will only contribute to his destruction. Ultimately Bangladesh will be the loser.

BANGLADESH XI: Anamul Haque, Imrul Kayes, Mithun Ali, Mominul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shuvagoto Hom, Nasir Hossain, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Mortaza, Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed. Drop Tamim, Mushfiqur and SHakib for series or 2 so they can come down to earth and take a responsibility and gave good results for BD team.

They need to be out of Bangladesh for a while.

What a nightmare this season have been for Bangladesh. Its not the best time to be a Bangladeshi fan. I hope they can turn it around in this tour.
