Stewart Pether was an excellent all-round sportsman, winning Blues at Oxford for cricket, rugby and golf - he also played hockey for them but did not win a Blue. He played 10 first-class matches for Oxford University in 1939, taking 31 wickets at 20.06. He also played regularly for Oxfordshire in the years before the war.

He joined the army in 1939 and avoided a posting to Burma as he was needed to play rugby for the Army, and later landed on Gold Beach on D-Day in 1944 as a major with the 2nd Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment. On June 11, his sergeant was killed next to him, but he was saved thanks to the bullet hitting the brandy flask in his breast pocket. On July 17 he was badly wounded by a shell from a German 105mm self-propelled gun. After the war he taught geography at St Edward's School, Oxford.
