Jack Watson was one of Durham's leading allrounders for two decades after World War Two, playing 131 times for the county either side of a seven-year spell with Northumberland. A left-hand batsman and seam bowler (converting to an offspinner later in his career), he made his debut in 1945 and by the time he retired in 1966 he had taken 394 wickets at 16.63 and scored 2816 runs. He was a policeman and latterly a security officer, and also acted as chief scout for Middlesbrough and was caretaker manager of Darlington on five occasions.
