England in Bangladesh ODI Series - 1st ODI

Bangladesh v England

England won by 6 wickets (with 24 balls remaining)

13.21 Hello and a very warm welcome to coverage of the 1st ODI of England's tour to Bangladesh. I'm Sahil Dutta and at some point I'll be joined by Liam Brickill and Andrew McGlashan to take you through today. Excitingly for all of us, Andrew Miller is in Dhaka and has unearthed this exclusive, unexpected gem of news - Craig Kieswetter has been handed his cap so will make his England debut today. A quick note to all the feedbackers, I will entertain only 15 emails about England's South African-born batsmen, so get the best ones in early, or hold your peace.

Already it's time for a change, since Liam has sauntered in and demanded he's taking over the comms.

Morning all! First of all, we have some team news, here's the England side for today: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Ryan Sidebottom.

Toss: Alastair Cook has called correctly, and England will bowl first at Shere Bangla National Stadium. Shakib al Hasan has said that, while he's not sure about the turn in this wicket, "it will keep low, that's for sure".

Play will begin shortly, and while Kieswetter is making his debut today, Prior will be keeping wicket.

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Aftab Ahmed, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 6 Shakib al Hasan (capt), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Abdur Razzak

While we all wait for play to begin. why not have a look at the preview, for an in-depth look at the factors relating to this game. For a more intimate view of touring Bangladesh, check out Andrew Miller's Tour Diary. He's the Father of Bangladesh Cricket, you know. And for all our US cricket fans, you can watch every match of the Bangladesh v England series live online on ESPN360.com. Please note this service is available free to all users in the USA who have access to ESPN360.com.

David Lloyd reckons England may have missed a trick in fielding first, as he feels the pitch may die and become very slow and low later in the game. Just a small crowd in the ground at the moment, although that may change once the lights come on later.

10.3

Broad to Junaid Siddique, OUT, lucky break for England, Broad finally pitches it up, and Siddique clips a leg-stump half-volley straight to square leg. He was slightly deceived by the slower ball, but it was a soft dismissal that England really needed. Kieswetter was the catcher, his first contribution to international cricket

End of over 12 (9 runs) Bangladesh 82/2 (RR: 6.83)
Aftab Ahmed    2* (4b)      TT Bresnan    6-0-34-1

15.3

Sidebottom to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, width given, Shakib has a go at it and third man cleans up

15.4

Sidebottom to Tamim Iqbal, 2 runs, full, wide half-volley the batsmen get through for one as Pietersen fields, but a sloppy return to Prior allows them to scurry through for a second

15.5

Sidebottom to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, slower ball, much slower this time, but lots of width given again and Tamim plays an un-Tamim-like delicate late cut

15.6

Sidebottom to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, angling in to the batsmen, tucked to midwicket but straight to the fielder

and that will be drinks. Great start from Bangladesh has been squandered slightly with some soft dismissals, but Shakib has joined Tamim in the middle, and Bangladesh will be hoping they can build a good partnership here.

A slight delay as Shakib requests the screen to be moved

16.2

Broad to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, fuller, driven in the air but through the gap through cover. He's very lucky to get away with that, as it would have been easily catchable if hit at a fielder. Sweeper cleans up as they run one

16.4

Cook brings Collingwood on now, Prior up to the stumps. Colly could get some grip on his offcutters here, Swann got some turn in his first over.

Collingwood to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, good start from around the wicket, off cutter, slightly straight and Shakib works it away to leg for a single

18.3

Collingwood to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, slightly quicker, good ball on off stump and Tamim gets a thick outside edge on it and the ball rolls down to third man. Definitely not deliberately played

18.4

Collingwood to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, very, very slow, really flighted, but Tamim plays it watchfully down to long off

Good crowd coming in now

18.5

Collingwood to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, round the wicket to Shakib, a bit too straight though and he's able to work it to leg, a slight fumble gives them the chance to run through for one

18.6

Collingwood to Tamim Iqbal, no run, ooh, Tamim thinks about the paddle sweep, but it's too far outside off and he adjusts to play it off the face, but the ball goes straight to short third man

Good first over from Collingwood there, he may have a lot more bowling to do in this game

End of over 19 (7 runs) Bangladesh 110/3 (RR: 5.78)

19.3

Swann to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT, Gone! Shakib goes, Swann strikes in his second over! Shakib skips down the wicket and is done in by some drift and really sharp turn there. Prior makes no mistake with the stumping and the Bangladesh captain goes.

Bangladesh in a tricky situation here after their superb start. Tamim needs a good partner here. And that it appears that Shakib wicket was caught behind, although Prior whipped the bails off as well after he caught it

Abdur Razzak    0* (3b)      GP Swann    10-0-32-3
Tamim Iqbal    125* (116b 13x4 3x6)      LJ Wright    1-0-4-1

And Bangladesh decide to take the Powerplay, finally, as Cook brings Broad back on. Fine leg is inside the circle...

42.1

Broad to Tamim Iqbal, no run, Tamim makes room, stepping to leg but Broad follows him with a shortish ball on his hips, and he flicks it straight to Sidebottom at short fine leg

Sidebottom goes back to the fence now

42.2

Broad to Tamim Iqbal, no run, slower ball from Broad, Tamim has a massive swipe at it and hits out to the fielder on the boundary at midwicket. He turns down the single though

42.3

Broad to Tamim Iqbal, no run, makes room again, trying to hit this one out of the stadium but he doesn't time it at all, the bottom hand comes off the bat and he's lucky that didn't carry to the fielder at mid on, really looped up

42.4

Broad to Tamim Iqbal, OUT, Gone! Tamim moves around again, stepping across to the off side this time and trying to paddle the ball down to fine leg. He telegraphed the movement though, and Broad speared the ball in to shatter the stumps

Tamim Iqbal b Broad 125 (187m 120b 13x4 3x6) SR: 104.16

42.5

Broad to Shafiul Islam, no run, nasty, brutish short ball first up, and the ball whizzes past Shafiul's nose

42.6

Broad to Shafiul Islam, no run, follows it up with a much fuller ball, but it's outside off and Shafiul drives at it. Decent attempt, but he can't find the gap

End of over 43 (wicket maiden) Bangladesh 214/9 (RR: 4.97)
Shafiul Islam    0* (2b)      SCJ Broad    8-2-40-2
Abdur Razzak    0* (3b)      GP Swann    10-0-32-3

Bresnan on from the other end, he's bowled really well today

43.1

Bresnan to Abdur Razzak, 1 leg bye, Back of a length, on the hips and tucked away down to fine leg

43.2

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, no run, just outside off on a length, Shafiul just hangs his bat out but can't get anything on it, the ball dying on its way through to the keeper

43.3

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, Top shot! He's done really well has Shafiul - short and wide but it had to be put away and he did it in style, cuttting and beating a trundling Sidebottom on the fence

43.4

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, no run, he aims a flashing drive at the next one, but hit straight to the fielder in the covers. Good shot though

43.5

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, no run, Shafiul makes some room, but Bresnan follows him and the ball also darts in a touch and he can't get it away

43.6

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, 1 run, short and wide, Shafiul cuts and the ball flies off the top edge down to Sidebottom, who collects cleanly and hurls the ball back in

End of over 44 (6 runs) Bangladesh 220/9 (RR: 5.00)
Shafiul Islam    5* (7b 1x4)      TT Bresnan    9-0-48-1
Abdur Razzak    0* (4b)      SCJ Broad    8-2-40-2

44.1

Broad to Shafiul Islam, no run, short again, Shafiul cuts but Collingwood swoops round from backward point to cut it off, great fielding

44.2

Broad to Shafiul Islam, 1 run, makes room again, chopping the ball down into the covers, where Luke Wright makes a good diving stop, but the batsmen sprint through for one

44.3

Broad to Abdur Razzak, no run, round the wicket, and Razzak clears his left leg out of the way and hoicks, but connects only with fresh air

44.4

Broad to Abdur Razzak, no run, shorter, but not much pace on that at all. Razzak lets it go through, leaving well alone

44.5

Broad to Abdur Razzak, 1 run, Broad drifts onto the pads, allowing Razzak to work the ball to leg. Every run is vital from here

Good crowd in now, filling up nicely

44.6

Broad to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, what a shot from a no. 11! Broad's over is ruined slightly as Shafiul steps to leg and crashes a full ball straight back over Broad's head and the ball races to the boundary. Very welcome runs

End of over 45 (6 runs) Bangladesh 226/9 (RR: 5.02)
Shafiul Islam    10* (10b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    9-2-46-2
Abdur Razzak    1* (7b)      TT Bresnan    9-0-48-1

Sidebottom back again, Wright appears to have given his hamstring a slight tweak fielding in that last over. Can Sidebottom make amends for his expensive bowling by wrapping it up here?

45.1

Sidebottom to Abdur Razzak, 1 run, Razzak clears his leg again and heaves to the leg side, but doesn't really time it at all. The batsmen run through though

Wright looking uncomfortable out there, limping slightly

45.2

Sidebottom to Shafiul Islam, 1 run, hurled in at off stump, almost yorker length but Shafiul jams the bat down hard and they scamper a single

45.3

Sidebottom to Abdur Razzak, no run, Razzak misses out as Sidebottom offers up a juicy full toss outside off. Probably just trying to hit that a little too hard.

45.4

Sidebottom to Abdur Razzak, OUT, and that's a very tame end to the innings. Razzaq makes room to try and hit the ball over the off side, but doesn't time it at all as the ball hits the bottom of the bat and loops very gently to Cook at mid off

Abdur Razzak c Cook b Sidebottom 2 (20m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

So, Bangladesh bowled out five overs short of a full innings. They will be disappointed after the start that Tamim gave them, no-one stayed with him long enough to make a real difference. Sidebottom picked up a consolation wicket at the end, but it must be said he really didn't ball well today - different lengths and lines, although to be fair he was put under real pressure at the start by Tamim's blitz.

England will fancy a target of only 229, especially as they were staring down a much heftier total before Bangladesh collapsed. That said, this wicket is very slow, without much bounce at all, and Bangladesh's troop of spinners will definitely find something in it - I wouldn't be overly surprised to see them opening with spin from one end, although Mortaza is sure to get a crack at the new ball on his return to international cricket. Graeme Swann didn't go for a single boundary in his 10 overs, and was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for just 32. England may just struggle if the Bangladesh spinners can replicate his flight, turn and aggression.

45.4

Sidebottom to Abdur Razzak, OUT

Abdur Razzak c Cook b Sidebottom 2 (20m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00
