England in Bangladesh ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Bangladesh v England

England won by 2 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)

Right, England's openers are making their way out to begin the pursuit of 261. Alastair Cook played superbly in the first game, and will be hoping to be able to continue his good form today. For his part, Craig Kieswetter will be looking to make the most of his second crack at international cricket. I, Liam Brickhill, will be taking you through the first 15 overs of the chase

0.1

Shafiul Islam to Cook, 1 run, pacy ball first up, just back of a length on off stump and punched firmly into space

0.2

Shafiul Islam to Kieswetter, FOUR, dropped! Kieswetter is dropped by Rahim first ball, pushing forward to a fullish ball he gets a thickish edge which flies between keeper and slip. Another let-off on nought for Kieswetter

0.3

Shafiul Islam to Kieswetter, OUT, he's gone this time! Kieswetter advances down the pitch to a similar ball as the previous one and goes for a drive. The edge was thicker this time and flew fast and low to slip, who clung on. First blood to Bangladesh!

C Kieswetter c Imrul Kayes b Shafiul Islam 4 (3m 2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

Well, well, Bangladesh have a vital breakthrough early on. Can they put England under pressure here?

0.4

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, full and straight first ball, Pietersen drives firmly to mid on

0.5

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, great ball! A pacy, rising delivery outside off stump whizzes past the edge of Pietersen's bat, and the crowd go wild!

0.6

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, slower ball, pushed into the covers

End of over 1 (5 runs) England 5/1 (256 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 5.22)
KP Pietersen    0* (3b)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-5-1
AN Cook    1* (1b)

1.1

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, starts by angling one across Cook, a loosener which the England captain lets go

1.2

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, ooh, Cook has a little nibble to a length ball on off stump. Play and a miss, and the crowd roar their appreciation

1.3

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, much better shot from Cook, struck firmly but straight at the extra cover fielder

1.4

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, much fuller ball with some nip, Cook drives carefully to mid off

1.5

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, pushed out to mid off once again, Cook very watchful out there

What a great start from Bangladesh, but if you can't keep the Cricinfo scorecard open all day (maybe the boss is watching) we now have some pretty cool Twitter wicket alerts which will keep you up to date.

1.6

Rubel Hossain to Cook, FOUR, Cook finds the gap with a square drive, on the up. Great timing there, he didn't try to hit it too hard and placed it perfectly, once the ball was past the fielders it raced away

End of over 2 (4 runs) England 9/1 (252 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 4.50, RRR: 5.25)
AN Cook    5* (7b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-4-0
KP Pietersen    0* (3b)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-5-1

2.1

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, nice and straight, the ball skidded on to Pietersen, who got behind it in solid defence

2.2

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, 3 runs, more width on that one and Pietersen punches off the back foot through extra cover, Razzak chases the ball down before the rope

2.3

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, bang on target, and good pace too. Shafiul collects the ball in his follow through and threatens the non-strikers stumps, but Pietersen was well in

2.4

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, another good ball, on off stump and a little inside edge rolls off the pad into the off side

2.5

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, maintaing the good line, but Cook is up to the challenge, getting in line nicely and drives, but straight to mid off

2.6

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, punched straight back down the wicket, Shafiul attempts a diving stop and gets a hand on the ball as mid off runs round to cut it off

End of over 3 (3 runs) England 12/1 (249 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 5.29)
AN Cook    5* (11b 1x4)      Shafiul Islam    2-0-8-1
KP Pietersen    3* (5b)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-4-0

It's only taken two innings for Syed to write Kieswetter off "Dont Ever expect great performances from english wicket-keepers. It happens rarely... Can someone count the number of keepers England had to experiment with in recent years?" Fair point though, England have tried zillions of keepers in one-day cricket since Stewart retired.

3.1

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, strong shot, pitched up and slammed at mid off. Well fielded

3.2

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen moves across and gets his head over a length ball, played down in defence

3.3

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, FOUR, that was very close! Pietersen charges down the track, trying to flick the ball through midwicket but the ball takes the inside edge, just missing the stumps on its way to the fine leg boundary

3.4

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, 1 run, pushed firmly just to mid on's left, and the batsmen take the chance for a sharp single

3.5

Rubel Hossain to Cook, FOUR, full, wide, and put away in style. There isn't enough swing to be bowling like that, and Cook took full advantage, silencing the large crowd

3.6

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, full again, but straight, and Cook punches a bottom-handed drive at mid off. A slight misfield, but they wisely decide not to risk a run

End of over 4 (9 runs) England 21/1 (240 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 5.25, RRR: 5.21)
AN Cook    9* (13b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-13-0
KP Pietersen    8* (9b 1x4)      Shafiul Islam    2-0-8-1

4.1

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, solid shot, not looking to do anything special is Pietersen, just searching for timing, and he pushes this one off the back foot straight to short extra cover

4.2

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, down the track and bunted straight back at the bowler, who fumbles the ball, but no run taken

4.3

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, back of a length and Pietersen rides the skiddy bounce easily, tapping the ball down towards mid on

4.4

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, slower ball, looked like an offcutter, Pietersen forward in defence

England have won twice and lost three times chasing scores of over 250 on the subcontinent, which should give Bangladesh some hope

4.5

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, no run, bouncer! Good intent by the bowler there, refusing to back down, but Pietersen sways away with time to spare

4.6

Shafiul Islam to Pietersen, 3 runs, dances down the track once again, and tucked through the gap between midwicket and mid on

End of over 5 (3 runs) England 24/1 (237 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 4.80, RRR: 5.26)
KP Pietersen    11* (15b 1x4)      Shafiul Islam    3-0-11-1
AN Cook    9* (13b 2x4)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-13-0

5.1

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, dug in short but doesn't get up, riding the low bounce to work the ball to leg. Rubel has a really slingy action

5.2

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen moves down the wicket and across to change the angle, allowing him to work the ball behind square on the leg side for a single

5.3

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, full toss, and Cook can't capitalise - he ends up just tapping it softly back to the bowler

fine leg to leg slip

5.4

Rubel Hossain to Cook, FOUR, too short and on Cook's hip, I think he was trying to set Cook up there but he pulled the ball easily wide of the fielder to the boundary

5.5

Rubel Hossain to Cook, 1 run, full and Cook swipes to leg, picking the gap and two runs to go with it

5.6

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, that's kept a touch low! Hits the bottom of Pietersen's bat, as he stoops low to keep the ball out. Slightly over dramatic from KP, one might say. It didn't keep that low

End of over 6 (6 runs) England 30/1 (231 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 5.25)
KP Pietersen    12* (18b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    3-0-19-0
AN Cook    14* (16b 3x4)      Shafiul Islam    3-0-11-1

6.1

Shafiul Islam to Cook, FOUR, solid strike! Length ball pitching on off and angled across, Cook just hits through the line and bisects the fielders perfectly

6.2

Shafiul Islam to Cook, FOUR, another boundary, but that should have been out! Cook pulled a short ball in the air towards midwicket, but the fielder runs in much too far and misjudges the catch, the ball flying over his outstretched hands

6.3

Shafiul Islam to Cook, FOUR, and that'll be painful for the bowler. He attempts the slower ball, pitching it up, but Cook slams the ball powerfully through the covers and the ball races away

Round the wicket now

6.4

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, angled in to Cook, who tucks it off his hips but - luckily for the bowler - picks out short fine leg

6.5

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, straighter, and dropped close on the leg side

6.6

Shafiul Islam to Cook, no run, good ball to finish the over, pacy on off stump from around the wicket, but Cook is equally good in defence

End of over 7 (12 runs) England 42/1 (219 runs required from 43 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 5.09)
AN Cook    26* (22b 6x4)      Shafiul Islam    4-0-23-1
KP Pietersen    12* (18b 1x4)      Rubel Hossain    3-0-19-0

Razzak to bowl now

7.1

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, no run, good ball to start. Flighted up on middle stump, and already a hint of turn

7.2

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, 1 run, tossed up on off stump this time, and Pietersen drives off the front foot to deep mid off

7.3

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, Razzak's really flighting them so far, and Cook works this one away to mid on

7.4

Abdur Razzak to Cook, 1 run, too short there, Cook rocks back and tucks the ball to leg, just wide of fine leg and they snatch a single

7.5

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, no run, slightly quicker through the air, Pietersen hangs back and tries to flat bat it back down the wicket, mistimed

7.6

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, no run, pitched up on off and driven very firmly, but the cover fielder is there to stop it and prevent any runs

End of over 8 (2 runs) England 44/1 (217 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 5.50, RRR: 5.16)
KP Pietersen    13* (22b 1x4)      Abdur Razzak    1-0-2-0
AN Cook    27* (24b 6x4)      Shafiul Islam    4-0-23-1

Spin from both ends as Naeem Islam is brought on

8.2

Naeem Islam to Pietersen, no run, good ball, straight and on a tantalising length, but not much turn yet

8.4

Naeem Islam to Cook, 1 run, too short and on the legs as well, Cook plays a risk-free shot to deep midwicket

8.5

Naeem Islam to Pietersen, no run, ooh, play and a miss! Quite wide and Pietersen goes for a flashing cut. The ball goes on with the arm though

8.6

Naeem Islam to Pietersen, FOUR, slammed back past Naeem. Too short again and Pietersen just cleared the left leg and hammered the ball to straightish long on. Powerful shot

End of over 9 (7 runs) England 51/1 (210 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 5.66, RRR: 5.12)
KP Pietersen    18* (26b 2x4)      Naeem Islam    1-0-7-0

9.1

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, wide and Cook slashes hard, but meets fresh air

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, straighter and Cook goes for the slog sweep. Possibly some glove on that, but the ball bobbled past Cook and the keeper to slip

9.3

Abdur Razzak to Cook, 1 run, full and straight, Cook nurdles to leg

9.4

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, OUT, Gone! Delivered from round the wicket, pitching on leg and turning sharply. Pietersen played all round the turn to be struck on the back leg plumb in front. And Razzak breaks his wicketless run - which had stretched to 45 overs in international cricket - with the huge wicket of Pietersen

And Bangladesh take the bowling Powerplay straight away. What's more, Shakib al Hasan has brought himself on.

10.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, 1 run, around the wicket, pitching outside off and Cook plays an awkward-looking swipe across the line to get one to long on

11.2

Abdur Razzak to Cook, 1 run, just a touch too short there, tapped to long on off the back foot

"It's getting a bit buzzy up here in the press box," says Miller. "But fortunately we have a sizeable-palmed ex-England swing bowler to exterminate anything in his path." England could do with some of that clout in the middle.

11.4

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, 1 run

11.5

Hello folks, we should a good game on here. This chase will test England. The spinners are causing a few problems, but it's not actually turning that much out there. You can see that for yourself on our thrilling new Hawk-Eye feature.

12.1

12.6

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, no run, gee, what was that from Colly? He came down the pitch and lost all control of his shot as he tried to whip it through the leg side and finished playing a horrid swipe

England may be struggling here, but Steve reckons he's found a bigger problem. "If Cook carries on like this, England are going to have made a real problem for themselves aren't they? You couldn't drop Cook, but you surely can't open with him and Stauss, and you can't drop Strauss because he is captain! Or, you give Cook the ODI captaincy, and then have a different captain for all three formats. Either way, resting Strauss is going to leave a real mess."

End of over 13 (3 runs) England 61/2 (200 runs required from 37 overs, RR: 4.69, RRR: 5.40)
PD Collingwood    4* (14b)      Rubel Hossain    4-0-22-0

13.3

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, 1 run, stands tall and punches down to long off

13.4

Abdur Razzak to Cook, 2 runs, it's in the air and Cook almost picks out the fielder again. He swings it away over deep midwicket, but the fielder scurrying around can't make it as the ball drops about ten yards away from him...heart in mouth stuff for the captain

13.5

Abdur Razzak to Cook, 1 run, dragged down again and pulled strongly out to deep square-leg

13.6

14.2

Naeem Islam to Morgan, no run, tossed up on middle, driven gently back down the pitch

With a wicket desperately needed, Shakib Al Hasan, probably the most stylish man in cricket, is on.

43.3

43.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Wright, OUT, Shakib does it again! Horrid shot from Wright, swishing aimlessly and needlessly across the line and missing. Canons into off stump, could be too late for Bangladesh unless they get Morgan, though.

44.5

Mahmudullah to Morgan, no run, well, Morgan attempts a big sweep but finds thin air, another dot ball

44.6

Mahmudullah to Morgan, 1 run, better from Morgan, keeps the strike with a collected dab down towards mid on. England's hopes rest of Morgan

James Tredwell on debut has a massive job to do. He just has to hold his nerve and bat for Morgan. This is Shakib's last over.

45.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Tredwell, no run, you'd think he's landing grenades, Tredwell very suspiciously prods at this outside off stump into the off side

45.6

Well this is a dangerous move from Shakib, paceman Safiul Islam is on. Runs will be available but he could take a wicket I suppose.

46.6

Shafiul Islam to Tredwell, no run, slower ball to finish, which takes some guts, and Shafiul lands it well, Tredwell can't do much with that. Excellent finish to the over

Morgan is nearing his first ODI hundred for England.

48.1

Shafiul Islam to Morgan, FOUR, this will help! Full toss smashed to deep square for another boundary, brilliant stuff from him, so calm under pressure

48.2

Shafiul Islam to Morgan, 2 runs, there it is, brilliant hundred from Morgan, but he does not even acknowledge it, he knows he's got work to do

48.4

Shafiul Islam to Morgan, FOUR, this is sterling stuff from Morgan, crisply smashes a full toss over cover for another boundary

48.5

Shafiul Islam to Morgan, SIX, Well there you go! Morgan finishes it style, clipping this high and handsomely over square leg for six! He's been so completely certain and controlled under pressure, fantastic batting. He becomes, incidentally, the first to make an ODI hundred for two nations.

That is all from me, Sahil Dutta, Liam Brickhill and Andrew McGlashan, it's been an enjoyable match and we'll be back on Friday 5th for the final ODI at Chittagong. Until then, do check out Liam's bulletin, which will be ready shortly, and Andrew Miller's Twitter page. Thanks for all the emails, I hope you'll join us on Friday.

The man of the match is, unsurprisingly, Eoin Morgan. He says he didn't even know when he reached his hundred and says he had a clear plan for the run chase and was certain that Tredwell on debut would stick with him.

England seal the series and Shakib at the presentation ceremony says he's have wanted 10 more runs but praises Morgan's innings, saying he assessed the conditions very well.

Alastair Cook is full of smiles, and is particularly pleased with winning the fastest fifty award having just been left out of the World Twenty20 squad.

The deflections and reverse-sweeps always attract interest, but it's Morgan's serene presence under pressure that really impresses. For Bangladesh, Shakib may rue the decision to use Shafiul at the end, pace on the ball seemed to release the shackles, but really their attack lacks a touch of menace at times.

Finally Morgan affords himself a smile as he punches the air and high-fives his captain. Bangladesh came so close here, thanks in no small part to three quick wickets from their captain Shakib.
