England in Bangladesh Test Series - 1st Test

Bangladesh v England

England won by 181 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Hello folks, well that was quite a build-up. Hope I don't let you down. Isn't this exciting? Test cricket. Brilliant. Alastair Cook takes guard - captain Cook (it won't be the last time I say that, sorry) - along with debutant Michael Carberry. We are all set...Shahadat Hossain with the new ball

9.30 Right, enough chat. Carberry and Cook are making their way to the middle, the Bangladesh fielders are out there and, most excitingly of all, Andrew McGlashan is ready for a stint of comms.

9.15 "England's four front line bowlers have only 44 tests between them. When was the last time England entered a test with such inexperience. And please, no answers like 1889. I mean recently," asks Mark. Well there was this one time in 1904 that.... Good point.

Sally makes the point that quite a few of you have. How international we all are. "I'm an England fan and I'm awake. Thenagain, it is only 10:20pm where I am in New York. Seems very weird to be involved in a cricket match late evening. I'm usually having to wake up early!"

Tony Booth has forwarded us his diary "Just woke up and waiting for Cook and Carberry to walk out at the un-earthly hour of 3am GMT....not as bad as it seems though as I am in Hong Kong and it is 11am here! Just crawled out of bed and finishing my Weetabix and cup of tea to be followed up by nibbling on my hob-nob!!" God I would love some breakfast.

9.00 Bangladesh win the toss and field. Interesting decision that, Alastair Cook said he would have batted, so everyone's happy I guess. Shakib reckoned there could be a hint of dampness early on, but with a pitch that could turn later, it seems peculiar to chose not to bowl last. It's pretty lonely in the office here, so please send us some thoughts. If any England fans are awake at this ungodly hour, do tell us why.

Andrew Miller is puzzled, and frankly, quite annoyed with the Bangladesh tactics already. "What's the point in loading your side with spinners and fielding first? Bangladesh pulled the same stunt in Chittagong last time we were here. And they got utterly thumped ..." For more of his gems, do check out his Twitter feed.

8.50 Hello and welcome. Plenty going down in the cricket world today with the IPL starting later, but here and now it's time for Test cricket. I'm Sahil Dutta, and I'll be joined by Andrew McGlashan and at some point Liam Brickhill to take you through all the action from this first Test at Chittagong.

With barely a moment to catch my breath, Andrew Miller, who's at the ground has startling team news. Steven Finn and Michael Carberry will debut for England, with no place for James Tredwell.

"It's a pretty misty morning here in Chittagong. The sun will soon burn the fog away though. It promises to be a scorcher," declares Miller.

Confirmation that England look like this: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Michael Carberry, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Steven Finn

I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing Steven Finn. Pretty much any England seamer who is tall gets the heart fluttering. It's why Steve Harmison provoked half a decade of anguish. Finn looked lively in the warm-up games but two seamers in these conditions would have been a liability.

Tredwell will feel a little hard done by, having taken so many wickets against Bangladesh A, but he offers little that Swann won't provide anyway. Which is why taking two offspinners on tour looked puzzling. And, as Miller points out, "there's always KP, who's bowling for his place."

Those of you following us from the US, don't forget you can access live coverage of this series on ESPN360, so head on over and see the action in glorious technicolor.

Bangladesh are as follows: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Rubel Hossain, 11 Shadahat Hossain

All eyes, as Gnasher's preview will tell you, on their super-hero captain, Shakib Al Hasan.

0.1

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, starts with a low full toss outside off which is stubbed into the covers off a toe end

0.2

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, hits a good length this time outside off, Cook shoulders arms as it sails gently through to the keeper. All eyes on whether this pitch will offer anything early on

0.3

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, 2 runs, outside leg stump, tucked neatly backward of square and they come back for a second although there was a moment of uncertainty between the new batting pair

0.4

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, pushed across outside off, left along again and it comes slowly off the surface

0.5

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, keeps it in a channel outside off but it's a fraction too wide...he has to make Cook play with the new ball. It carries at shin height to Rahim

Shahadat grunts loudly each he lets go of the ball...not dissimilar to some of the female tennis players

0.6

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, that's a decent ball to finish with, slightly tighter to Cook who has a moment of indecision whether to play or leave before withdrawing the bat

Very sedate start all round...both sides feeling their way into the match

End of over 1 (2 runs) England 2/0
AN Cook    2* (6b)      Shahadat Hossain    1-0-2-0
MA Carberry    0* (0b)

So Michael Carberry prepares for his first ball in Test cricket

1.1

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, and he gets a nice sighter outside off and can leave well alone

1.2

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, hint of swing back into the left hander as Carberry plays slightly around his front pad and drives to mid-on

1.3

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, 2 runs, that will be a great feeling, his first Test runs, as he works the ball off his hip down to fine leg and fumble allows him back for a second.

1.4

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, full and outside off stump, quite a slingy action and not much bounce from Rubel

1.5

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, full at the stumps, that's not a bad way to attack Carberry, and it's met with a full face as it's punched into the leg side

1.6

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, a easy leave to end the over...early signs are that it's going to be hard toil for the quicks. Not sure why Shakib bowled first to be honest.

"Why am I awake at this ungodly hour?, asks Tom who clearly has an answer ready. "I have a 2000-word essay due in about 6 hours time and am supposed to be doing that. Instead I am going to watch what hopefully should be a walk in the park for England." Pfft 2000 words, try giving this a go.

End of over 2 (2 runs) England 4/0
MA Carberry    2* (6b)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-2-0
AN Cook    2* (6b)      Shahadat Hossain    1-0-2-0

2.1

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, this one barely creeps off the surface as it's left alone outside off

2.2

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, good line on off stump, Cook defends solidly back down the pitch...England's batsmen should be looking forward to cashing in

2.3

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, stands tall in the crease and plays into the off side

2.4

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, searching for a full length outside off, Cook takes a stride towards the ball then lets it go harmlessly through

2.5

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, huge appeal! Bangladesh go up for a catch down the leg side but umpire Rod Tucker says not out much to the bemusement of the home side...replays suggest it came off thigh pad

2.6

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, gee, this one scoots low outside off stump and goes on the second bounce to the keeper...not a great sign in the third over

End of over 3 (maiden) England 4/0
AN Cook    2* (12b)      Shahadat Hossain    2-1-2-0
MA Carberry    2* (6b)      Rubel Hossain    1-0-2-0

3.1

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, that's a cracking shot from Carberry to register the first boundary of the Test as he stands tall and drives square past point...that's a strong area for Carberry

3.2

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, and he follows that with a flowing cover drive as Rubel tries to compensate by pitching up...Carberry took a stride forward and drove sweetly through the line

3.3

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, fired wide of off stump and he resists having a dart at another drive

3.4

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, good reply from Rubel, banged in and it lifts past Carberry's chest as he sways out of the line...interesting stuff all of a sudden

3.5

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, fuller again this time, nicely judged and left alone

3.6

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, that's a ripper...driven dismissively through mid off with a perfect straight bat. He won that over without a doubt and it will have helped settle any early nerves

"I'm following the test live as I'm in Japan and it's midday here - just the right time for cricket. Real chance for some of England's new hopes to make an impression." Japan...always good to hear where people are following from

End of over 4 (12 runs) England 16/0
MA Carberry    14* (12b 3x4)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-14-0
AN Cook    2* (12b)      Shahadat Hossain    2-1-2-0

Down to two slips and a gully already

4.1

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, outside off and it goes comfortably through to the keeper

Bangladesh already on the defensive which is baffling to say the least...but, then, so was bowling first

4.2

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, same again from bowler and batsman as another one goes through to the keeper

Ashkibir wants to issue a stark warning to all the England fans. "Walk in th park"??? Are you kidding me? The one-day series was no way an easy ride for the English..they would have lost a match if the umpires had not messed up.."

4.3

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, closer to off stump and Cook has to play this time, defending into the covers

4.4

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, comes half foward and drives off a thick inside part of the bat back to the bowler

"One of the great grunters," David Lloyd says of Shahadat

4.5

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, a lot of effort going in for not much reward from this pitch as Cook defends on the front foot

4.6

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, too wide to interest Cook at all...the shine isn't going to last long. Not long until spin I reckon

"With Day 1 action currently underway here tonight in Canada, I'm faced in making a choice whether to keep watching the comm, or watch my daily comedy show for about an hour. That must be the toughest choice I've ever had to make," says Mike, who has clearly lived a very sheltered life.

End of over 5 (maiden) England 16/0
AN Cook    2* (18b)      Shahadat Hossain    3-2-2-0
MA Carberry    14* (12b 3x4)      Rubel Hossain    2-0-14-0

5.1

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, good line of middle and off, Carberry defends square on the off side

Carberry has a high back lift, if that's of interest to you all

5.2

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, he picks up another boundary, this time off a thick outside edge as it runs between second slip and gully down to the vacant third man

5.3

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, on off stump, no width offered which is important, and it's defended down the pitch

5.4

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, 1 run, opens the face a touch and finds space on the off side...this has been a good over so far, a consistent line around off stump

5.5

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, just as a I say it's a good line, he sprays one wide outside off which is left alone

5.6

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, this one doesn't bounce much and Cook squirts it into the off side with a fairly ungainly poke

End of over 6 (5 runs) England 21/0
AN Cook    2* (20b)      Rubel Hossain    3-0-19-0
MA Carberry    19* (16b 4x4)      Shahadat Hossain    3-2-2-0

6.1

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, too wide at Cook who doesn't even consider play a shot

6.2

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, nearly a breakthrough as this finds the edge of Carberry's bat as he jumps into a defensive shot, but the lack of pace in the pitch means the edge falls short of second slip

6.3

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, excellent follow-up from Shahadat, Carberry almost in two minds whether to play or leave as it shapes back a fraction with a touch of swing

6.4

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, this one dies on the surface and almost rolls through the keeper...good luck batting last on here

6.5

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, more clear effort from the bowler, complete with sound effects, and another leave from Carberry

6.6

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, on middle and off, defended with the head right over the ball and he holds his pose for a few seconds

"Quite seriously you have to be desperate to be awake watching Bang Vs Eng play, let alone watch England play. You guys doing the commentary need to be given Nobel prizes for patience." Thanks, George Bharani, but the sad thing is, if I wasn't here I'd probably be watching at home.

Slip and a short leg catching

7.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Carberry, no run, on off stump, leans forward and defends

7.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Carberry, no run, getting a good stride towards the pitch of the ball, is careful to smoother any hint of turn...and there isn't much

7.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Carberry, no run, positive footwork from Carberry, down the pitch and drives it hard back to Shakib who then threatens to hurl the ball back down the pitch but decides to hold on

7.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Carberry, no run, defended with soft hands to the leg side

7.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Carberry, no run, round the wicket, on off stump and defended to the off side this time

Steady start from Shakib who will have plenty of work today

End of over 8 (1 run) England 26/0
MA Carberry    23* (27b 5x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-1-0
AN Cook    3* (21b)      Shahadat Hossain    4-2-6-0

8.1

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, hurls himself through the crease again but he can't make the batsman play

8.2

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, 1 run, full on off stump, Cook leans into a drive which goes to the right of mid off who makes a good diving save to keep them to a single

8.3

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, Shahadat huffs and puffs but can't blow Carberry away as this is outside off stump

8.4

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, flung well wide of off stump, nothing doing from the batsman who leaves alone

8.5

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, on leg stump, but Carberry misses out as he clips it straight to the man forward of square

8.6

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, wide outside off stump, left alone by Carberry who has dominated the scoring so far

End of over 9 (1 run) England 27/0
MA Carberry    23* (31b 5x4)      Shahadat Hossain    5-2-7-0
AN Cook    4* (23b)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-1-0

Comes round the wicket

9.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, no run, angling across the left hander onto off stump, Cook leans forward

9.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, SIX, the one-day series has finished, but Cook has brought out the slog-sweep with great effect as he clears deep midwicket with ease and collects his first boundary in fine style

9.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, no run, flicked out to short midwicket

That was the third six of Cook's Test career

9.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, no run, flat outside off stump and left alone

9.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Cook, no run, worked out to midwicket to end the over

End of over 10 (6 runs) England 33/0
AN Cook    10* (29b 1x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    2-0-7-0
MA Carberry    23* (31b 5x4)      Shahadat Hossain    5-2-7-0

10.1

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, 80mph, outside off stump and again the batsman doesn't have to play

10.2

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, and again, far too wide of the off stump and in the first session of a Test match this is a criminal waste of the new ball

10.3

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, FOUR, flamboyant pull from Carberry as he whips this off his hip with Caribbean flair...it wasn't that short, but he picked up the length very quickly

10.4

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, drags his line and length back to off stump, defended into the off side

Changes the angle and comes round the wicket

10.5

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, outside off, comes in with the angle but it has started too wide and doesn't make him play

10.6

Shahadat Hossain to Carberry, no run, goes on the second bounce through to the keeper to end Shahadat's sixth over and that might be his spell done and dusted for now

End of over 11 (4 runs) England 37/0
MA Carberry    27* (37b 6x4)      Shahadat Hossain    6-2-11-0

11.5

Naeem Islam to Cook, no run, pushed down to mid on

11.6

Naeem Islam to Cook, 2 runs, swung through the leg side, not quite as convincing as his first sweep for six and it goes through square leg...it was quite full on off stump and he dragged it a touch

End of over 12 (4 runs) England 41/0
AN Cook    14* (35b 1x6)      Naeem Islam    1-0-4-0
MA Carberry    27* (37b 6x4)      Shahadat Hossain    6-2-11-0

Shahadat has a rest and Rubel Hossain comes back into the attack

12.1

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, no run, very full, very wide and Carberry chases one for the first time as he drives without conviction and plays over the top of the ball

12.2

Rubel Hossain to Carberry, 1 run, driven uppishly through the covers and there's already a sweeper out for the paceman as well

12.3

Rubel Hossain to Cook, (no ball) 2 runs, flicked off the hip through the leg side, nicely timed but it's pulled in short of the rope

12.3

Rubel Hossain to Cook, no run, full and outside off stump, Cook decides to leave alone rather than drive...he said in South Africa that he was putting the cover drive away

12.4

Rubel Hossain to Cook, FOUR, but he's still playing the pull and that was a dismissive shot through midwicket as Rubel dropped short and was punished...easy pickings

12.5

12.6

Rubel Hossain to Cook, 1 run, cut into the covers...that was a seven-ball over. Oops.

End of over 13 (13 runs) England 54/0

13.5

Naeem Islam to Cook, no run, defended to the leg side

18.1

Mahmudullah to Carberry, no run, big shot here as Carberry is beaten again! He looks in trouble against the offspin, pops forward and it spins past his defensive prod, thuds into the pads but probably missing off stump

18.2

Mahmudullah to Carberry, OUT, gone this time! Mahmudullah has caused all kinds of problems for Carberry. A big sweep against the spin attempted, but Carberry finds nothing but fresh air and the ball crashes into he front pad, looked out and replays show it was hitting. Vital breakthrough for Bangladesh who have looked all to flat this morning.

MA Carberry lbw b Mahmudullah 30 (75m 51b 6x4 0x6) SR: 58.82

Jonathan Trott comes to the wicket.

18.3

18.4

Mahmudullah to Trott, no run, again a fraction too short from the bowler allows Trott to get back and prod towards midwicket

18.5

Mahmudullah to Trott, 1 run, replay but the line was a fraction closer to the legs, allowing Trott to turn it away finer for a single down to fine leg

18.6

Here is Shakib to bowl at his opposite number.
