That is tea and ends a near-perfect session for England. Bangladesh were fortunate to get the breakthrough when Trott was given out but after that Cook and Pietersen batted positively and with ease to leave England in complete control at this stage.

End of over 59 (6 runs) England 243/2

    • AN Cook 113 (166b 10x4 2x6)
    • KP Pietersen 51 (62b 8x4)
    • Mahmudullah 14-1-45-1
    • Shakib Al Hasan 14-0-52-0

And it'll be a tired Bangladesh bowling attack that ambles out after tea. Cook and Pietersen are well set, and could easily build a massive first innings total here. Liam Brickhill and Sahil Dutta will be taking you through the last session.

End of over 61 (2 runs) England 253/2

    • AN Cook 119 (171b 11x4 2x6)

Bangladesh look deflated in the field, heads are drooping, hands on hips.

61.2

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, off stump half volley now, but bunted straight to mid off

Mark Kidger has gazed into his crystal ball and found this: "Wait for the torrent of criticism of KP when he gets out for 80-90. And, if he doesn't, there will be a torrent of criticism that his century is only against Bangladesh!" I have a feeling you're right Mark.

61.3

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, much better line and length on the ball, but there's not even a jot of movement on it and Pietersen has no trouble rocking back in defence

Pietersen has looked to be positive since tea

63.1

63.2

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, on a length and straight, Pietersen leans across and taps the ball to midwicket

63.3

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, good ball, on a length and just outside off, inviting a drive but the footwork wasn't great. Nothing on it though, so no alarms as Pietersen pushes into the off side

63.4

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, FOUR, top shot! Absolutely drilled straight back past the bowler, all along the ground. Superb example of a straightish on drive

63.5

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, no run, he pulls the length back slightly, and Pietersen moves back and across to defend

"Since Captain Cook took the helm of ship England," begins Marcus unable to hold back his chuckle, "he has shown great maturity to put England in a unassailable position. Arf, arf."

Gnasher reckons that's the best shot Pietersen's played since he lost the captaincy...

63.6

Rubel Hossain to Pietersen, 1 run, and he's almost done it again! Another straight drive hammered back past the bowler, but this one is too straight and smashes into the stumps at the non-striker's end

    • KP Pietersen 64 (87b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 121 (173b 11x4 2x6)

    • AN Cook 121 (176b 11x4 2x6)
    • KP Pietersen 65 (90b 10x4)
    • Shakib Al Hasan 17-1-55-0
    • Rubel Hossain 11-0-65-1

"KP has had to overcome the first serious flaw in his game i.e. against left arm orthodox spin. This is a greater challenge to him technically, tactically and mentally than the pace of SA or Australia. Cut the guy some slack, this might be the making of the more mature KP." It's a fair point, Kirk Steel, although nobody has panned KP as yet.

65.1

65.6

Chris Bennett has this "I have just found the hawkeye feature you now offer. As a web developer myself it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to the web, but i must say, this feature is [very] hot!!!" Yes, as the man says, our Hawk-Eye feature is excellent. Check it out.

"What odds will you give me on Pietersen being out lbw for 94 to one of the left arm spinners trying to reverse sweep his way to the century?" Honestly Peter Pennekett, I think the odds would be very long.

67.6

Naeem Islam to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen's got himself in a tangle there! He went back to defend, but the ball turned and bounced more than he expected, and took the inside edge, clipping the pad on it's way down and rolling between his legs and past the stumps. No harm done though

End of over 68 (5 runs) England 279/2

    • KP Pietersen 74 (107b 12x4)
    • AN Cook 122 (179b 11x4 2x6)

75.4

Abdur Razzak to Pietersen, OUT, oh no! Would you believe it!? Pietersen is bowled on 99 to a dastardly left-arm spinner, top stuff from Razzak. Pietersen went back to a full ball, trying to nurdle it away, and the ball spun past the edge and crashed into off stump. Sad end to a wonderful innings, but the left-arm-spin hoodoo continues to haunt him.

I can't begin to tell you how gutted Sahil was when KP got out. Utterly disconsolate. And Shakib has decided to take the new ball - It'll be Shahadat and Rubel Hossain to share it

82.1

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, 1 wide, and he starts with a horrible wide! That's slipped out of the hand and barely on the wicket, way, way wide of off stump

82.1

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, no run, much better line, just outside off stump and just a hint of movement away from the right-hander. Not too much pace on it though, and Collingwood watches the ball go by easily

82.2

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, 1 run, short and just a bit too straight, allowing Collingwood to move across and 'nurdle' the ball into the leg side

82.3

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, good ball, Shahadat's starting to find some rhythm now. This one is hurled in on off stump, angling across Cook who pushes onto the front foot to defend back to the bowler

82.4

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, angling the ball across again, but this one is pushed slightly too wide and Cook leaves alone

82.5

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, 1 run, loud grunt from the bowler as he delivers, but the ball slips leg side and Cook tucks it away easily off his hips.

82.6

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, no run, on off stump, Collingwood gets back and across in solid defence

End of over 83 (3 runs) England 339/3

    • PD Collingwood 9 (20b 1x4)
    • AN Cook 147 (221b 13x4 2x6)
    • Shahadat Hossain 11-2-38-0
    • Abdur Razzak 14-0-59-1

Well, it won't be Rubel from the other end - Razzak will continue with the new ball

83.1

Abdur Razzak to Cook, FOUR, and the ball just slides on with the arm - Cook plays for turn and the ball takes a thick outside edge, racing away wide of slip and down to third man. Frustrating for the bowler

83.2

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, on the toes and pushed firmly to leg, but straight to the wide-ish midwicket

83.3

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, hit straight back to the bowler

83.4

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, bowled full and straight again, and once again Cook taps the ball back to Razzak

83.5

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, slightly wider of off stump this time, Cook drives into the covers

83.6

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, Cook stretches forward to defend

And that edged four brought up Cook's 150 - top innings from the captain, and he'll be hoping to go on and help to build a massive first innings total for his team

End of over 84 (4 runs) England 343/3

    • AN Cook 151 (227b 14x4 2x6)
    • PD Collingwood 9 (20b 1x4)
    • Abdur Razzak 15-0-63-1
    • Shahadat Hossain 11-2-38-0
84.1

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, (no ball) 2 runs, digs this one in, but not much pace or bounce in the wicket and Collingwood has no problems rocking back to pull the ball through midwicket for two. And he's overstepped in making the effort

84.1

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, FOUR, short and wide this time, Collingwood waits in the crease and slashes the rank long hop in front of cover point. The fielder was on the boundary, but that was hit really hard and whizzed past his outstretched hands

84.2

Shahadat Hossain to Collingwood, 1 run, back of a length and nurdled to leg for one

84.3

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, 2 runs, slipping towards the left-hander's leg stump from over the wicket, Cook whips the ball through midwicket

"Cook closing in on his highest test match score... will he get there today is the only thing exciting left to happen before the close," declares Paul. Funny what gets people excited.

84.4

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, hurled at off stump with another loud grunt, Cook leans forward to defend with the straightest of bats

Shahadat really lets go with a loud grunt every ball. Bangladesh's answer to Monica Seles

84.5

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, no run, fuller this time, and on off stump once again and Cook defends

84.6

Shahadat Hossain to Cook, 2 runs, short and wide of off stump and Cook cuts hard, but there's cover out on the boundary so that'll just be one

End of over 85 (12 runs) England 355/3

    • AN Cook 155 (231b 14x4 2x6)
    • PD Collingwood 16 (23b 2x4)
    • Shahadat Hossain 12-2-50-0
    • Abdur Razzak 15-0-63-1
85.1

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, no run, tossed up from around the wicket to the right-hander, Collingwood drives hard but straight to mid off

85.2

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, no run, well flighted again, and the length was just right - Collingwood unsure as to whether to come forward or back

85.3

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, no run, takes a couple of steps down the track but Razzak sees him coming and pulls the ball down. Collingwood hurried in defence

85.4

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, FOUR, and he follows it up with a really bad ball. Full and wide of off stump and thumped through the covers with plent of bottom hand. No consistency from the bowlers today, and they've been punished for it

85.5

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, FOUR, down the track again and he gets to the pitch this time, slicing an inside-out drive powerfully through the covers to find the boundary once more. Too easy.

85.6

Abdur Razzak to Collingwood, no run, pulls the length back and Collingwood, having already done the damage, is content to hang back and drop the ball defensively towards point

End of over 86 (8 runs) England 363/3

    • PD Collingwood 24 (29b 4x4)
    • AN Cook 155 (231b 14x4 2x6)
    • Abdur Razzak 16-0-71-1
    • Shahadat Hossain 12-2-50-0

Rubel Hossain to replace Shahadat, who hadn't used the new ball very effectively

86.1

Rubel Hossain to Cook, 1 run, slightly too straight first ball, and you can't bowl there to Cook. The left-hander whips through midwicket but there's a fielder on the boundary there

86.2

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, no run, decent pace, but pushed full and too wide, Collingwood just watches the ball go by

86.3

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, no run, better ball, closer to off stump and with a bit of wobble on it. Collingwood presses half forward to defend

"The big question - who will get to 4000 runs first? Cook or Collingwood - my money is on Collingwood!" The BIG question Paul, really?

86.4

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, FOUR, scythed away behind point for another boundary. That ball got what it deserved - short and wide and absolutely hammered away

86.5

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, no run, he follows it up with a bouncer, but it's dug in much too short and the ball loops way over Collingwood's head. He barely had to duck under that one

86.6

Rubel Hossain to Collingwood, 2 runs, short again, and Collingwood angles the ball down to third man past a diving gully fielder for a couple

End of over 87 (7 runs) England 370/3

    • PD Collingwood 30 (34b 5x4)
    • AN Cook 156 (232b 14x4 2x6)
    • Rubel Hossain 13-0-79-1
    • Abdur Razzak 16-0-71-1

And that takes the partnership past 50 - it's come in quick time too, hardly any pressure at all on England's batsmen now

87.1

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, flighted from over the wicket, Cook tucks the ball defensively to midwicket

87.2

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, slightly shorter and pushed off the back foot to mid on

87.3

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, Cook moves across this time to whip the ball off his legs, but straight to square leg

87.4

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, tossed up on the toes once again, and tapped straight to square leg

Well the Paul union is out on force, good on them "Actually, I was just asking myself that 4000 run question the moment it appeared in your commentary - it clearly is the question on everyone's mind. My money on Collingwood too."

87.5

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, flighted full and straight but Cook is determined to see out these final overs without any alarms - defended with a straight bat

87.6

Abdur Razzak to Cook, no run, Cook lunges forward to defend again, and that's a maiden

End of over 88 (maiden) England 370/3

And it appears Aftab Ahmed is going to have a bowl. Perhaps they're thinking the batsmen might lose concentration against his dobbers

88.1

Aftab Ahmed to Collingwood, no run, a touch of swing away from the right hander, but that's pitched wide and moving wider of off stump

"I like to get up the aggregate batting records on Statsguru and see who players take over during the day. Today Cook has gone past Collingwood, Imran Khan, Flintoff and Hussey, among others. Thrilling," excellent stuff Adam.

88.2

Aftab Ahmed to Collingwood, no run, finds the off stump line this time and Collingwood defends

88.3

Aftab Ahmed to Collingwood, 2 runs, floated half volley and Collingwood has a full-blooded drive, but the ball takes the inside edge between Rahim's legs and down to fine leg. Airy drive, not great at this stage

88.4

Aftab Ahmed to Collingwood, no run, defended much more watchfully this time

88.5

Aftab Ahmed to Collingwood, no run, this one nips back in to Collingwood a touch, but no pace whatsoever on it, and he defends easily

Last over of the day coming up, and it'll be Tamim to bowl it - another part-timer, but a spinner

89.1

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, no run, really loopy delivery, pitching outside leg and striking the pad. A very optimistic appeal is quickly quashed

89.2

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, no run, slipping down leg, Cook misses it and Rahim fumbles but unlikely there was a stumping chance

89.3

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, no run, HUGE appeal from fielders and crowd, but that pitched way outside leg again and the appeal is dismissed

89.4

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, 2 runs, full and on leg stump, whipped away behind square leg

89.5

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, no run, with just two balls to go, Cook presses forward in defence

89.6

Tamim Iqbal to Cook, no run, and no alarms off the final ball either, loopy delivery is easily defended back down the pitch, and that'll be stumps

Plenty of applause for the England captain as he leaves the field, and rightfully so. He's capitalised on a weak effort from Bangladesh's bowlers to take England to a very strong position after they were put in by Shakib this morning.

There wasn't much in this pitch for the seamers or the spinners - although Mahmudullah and Naeem got some sharp turn at times - and Bangladesh used no less than eight bowlers on the first day of the Test. They had done reasonably well to remove Michael Carberry and Jonathan Trott, although there was some doubt over the second decision, but then let the game slip away from them with some loose bowling and sloppy fielding.

In the midst of Cook's partnership with Kevin Pietersen one got a real sense that Bangladesh had just about given up. Their fielding was lacklustre, the body language was downcast and there was no electricity in the field. Pietersen's dismissal for 99 to Razzak gave them a slight boost but once again the bowlers lacked the consistency to build any pressure on the new batsman, and Cook added a further 55 with Paul Collingwood before the close.

Bangladesh face a momentous task to fight their way back into this game after a negative performance on the first day. They could well have another full day in the field tomorrow, as Cook looks utterly at ease against their bowling attack and Collingwood's capacity for crease occupation is no secret.

It's not been the smartest display from Bangladesh. So tell us what you think they should do on our Facebook page. Andrew McGlashan's bulletin will be up shortly too, so have a look at that to see what his astute cricketing brain has made of the first day's play.

Meanwhile, if you like your sport with fast cars the merry-go-round that is Formula One has got underway in Bahrain and we have new Cricinfo-style commentary available. Click here to check out the site and follow what's going on throughout the weekend.

Well, that'll be all from Andrew McGlashan, Sahil Dutta and, latterly, Liam Brickhill for today. Do join us for the second day's play tomorrow from 9am (0300GMT).

Cook and Paul Collingwood make their way out with the Bangladesh team. Shakib Al Hasan needs some magic from somebody with the ball. Rubel Hossain will get the first chance...

9.25am Just a few minutes before the action starts. Can Bangladesh get any better? Will Alastair Cook get a career best? How many runs do England want? Stay tuned for the all the answers. I'd like to think England will declare between lunch and tea, but I don't think they will (if they aren't bowled out, of course). More like in the final session.

9.20am The word from Andrew at the ground is that it's a quiet start to the day and reports "an almost non-existent crowd right now" which isn't great news. Dare I mention there was a good crowd at the opening IPL game last night? OK, I have. It was a decent match, too, with Kolkata Knight Riders downing the defending champions Deccan Chargers. England's Owais Shah was win the runs which was good to see.

Anyway, back to this match. "A few last-minute throw downs," says Miller. I presume he means for the England batsmen, but Andrew could be having a net himself. He once dismissed Mike Gatting, if he hasn't got round to telling you. I've heard about it a few times. In detail.

Andrew's pictures have been great viewing on this trip. Here's the latest, a pile of fruity goodness. Good to see you are getting your five-a-day. "Bangladesh markets could teach Tesco a thing or two about stacking," he says.

9.00am Good morning and welcome to the second day's play from Chittagong. I'm Andrew McGlashan and will be joined by Sahil Dutta and Liam Brickhill to bring you all the action.

England are handsomely placed after Alastair Cook ended the opening day on 158 while Kevin Pietersen hit 99 before being bowled by Abdur Razzak. Talking of KP, he was pretty forthcoming in the post-match press conference about his recent struggles.

Don't forget that for those of you following us from the US you can watch this series online through ESPN360. But remember to keep Cricinfo open as well. Keeps us in a job. I'll now try and wake Andrew Miller up and get the latest news from him...wish me luck.
