England in Bangladesh Test Series - 2nd Test

Bangladesh v England

England won by 9 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

This partnership has reached 41 now, frustratingly for England

100.1

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, full, and Naeem gets the left leg forward and across to exhibit a solid forward defensive

100.2

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, streaky edge! Looked as though he opened the face on that but the ball squirted off the edge, falling short of any catchers however

100.3

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, full and driven hard into the covers

100.4

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, straying onto the legs, and Naeem shuffles across to try and get it away fine, but can't get the connection and Prior scoots round to cut the ball off

100.5

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, full again - looking for some swing - and driven off the front foot back to the bowler

100.6

Broad to Naeem Islam, no run, full of length and pushed firmly to mid off

End of over 101 (maiden) Bangladesh 355/8
Naeem Islam    40* (122b 4x4)      SCJ Broad    18-5-69-1
Shafiul Islam    25* (26b 5x4)      GP Swann    33-5-98-3

men all round the bat for the tailender

101.1

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, beaten! The ball drifted away and turned in a touch, beating the batsman in the flight and just brushing past the outside edge without making contact

101.2

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, gets forward to defend back to the bowler

101.3

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, and once again, the ball is tossed up and is met with a stretch and the full face of the bat

101.4

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, pushed into the covers off the front foot

101.5

Swann to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, shot! Quicker ball from Swann - arm ball - and Shafiul picked it up early and leaned forward to scythe the ball through the covers. Well, it certainly looks to be an easy-paced pitch with shots like that!

101.6

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, flighted again, and Shafiul defends

End of over 102 (4 runs) Bangladesh 359/8
Shafiul Islam    29* (32b 6x4)      GP Swann    34-5-102-3
Naeem Islam    40* (122b 4x4)      SCJ Broad    18-5-69-1

Tim Bresnan to replace Broad

102.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, and he starts by attacking the stumps straight away, delivered from slightly wide of the crease and angling in, but it is defended off the front foot

102.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, wide of off this time, and Naeem has nothing to do with it

102.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, on a length on or around off stump, and Naeem hovers on the back foot to push to point

102.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, full but still tailing in to the off stump, and defended with the full face of the bat

102.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, tight stuff from Bresnan, not giving Naeem anything and this one - speared at off stump on a length - is defended

102.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, strong finish from Bresnan! After moving the ball in to the right-handed Naeem with the first five, he gets one to nip away to beat the batsman's defensive prod. Close...

End of over 103 (maiden) Bangladesh 359/8
Naeem Islam    40* (128b 4x4)      TT Bresnan    14-5-40-1
Shafiul Islam    29* (32b 6x4)      GP Swann    34-5-102-3

And silly point has now come out

103.1

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, on the front foot, and pushed to mid on

103.2

Swann to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, Shafiul is enjoying himself out there! No foot movement, but the weight goes forward and he swings through the line to send the ball through the covers, beating the fielders and away to the boundary

103.3

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, pressing forward to defend

103.4

Swann to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, rank long hop, absolute filth from Swann and Shafiul rocks back to pull the ball handsomely over square leg. Good shot to a bad ball

103.5

Swann to Shafiul Islam, no run, Swann finds his mark again, and Shafiul responds with watchful defence

103.6

Swann to Shafiul Islam, 2 runs, well, he didn't seem to hit that too hard but the ball raced away off the drive over a quick outfield and they pick up a couple

End of over 104 (10 runs) Bangladesh 369/8
Shafiul Islam    39* (38b 8x4)      GP Swann    35-5-112-3
Naeem Islam    40* (128b 4x4)      TT Bresnan    14-5-40-1

104.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, full and on the off stump, defended

104.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, in the off stump channel once again, but wide enough for Naeem to lift the bat out of the way and leave alone

104.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, there's that ball that jags away off the seam once again! Naeem pulled the bat away from it, pulling it inside the line, but only after the ball had already beaten him.

104.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, in the channel again, but a good 8 inches outside off stump and left alone

104.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, metronomic stuff from Bresnan, hurling the ball down on a length around off stump time and again. This time it's defended

104.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, FOUR, back of a length and rearing up at the batsman, the ball squirts off the outer half of the bat but played with soft hands to send it down safely and into the gap between slip and gully for four

End of over 105 (4 runs) Bangladesh 373/8
Naeem Islam    44* (134b 5x4)      TT Bresnan    15-5-44-1
Shafiul Islam    39* (38b 8x4)      GP Swann    35-5-112-3

Tredwell in now, with a slip, and a silly point

105.1

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, floated up with some turn in to the batsman and defended

105.2

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, tossed up again, and Shafiul's eyes light up - he just stands there and clubs the ball away, over the bowler and past mid off for four

105.3

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, tries to slash a shorter ball from Tredwell, but the shot meets only fresh air

105.4

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, defended off the front foot

105.5

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, and now off the back foot, defended again

105.6

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, Shafiul is going for his shots here, and he's pulling it off! This one was flighted on middle and leg, and he cleared the left leg to try and hoick it over mid on. He didn't get the height or timing he was hoping for, but got just enough on it to beat the leaping mid on fielder. Exciting batting!

End of over 106 (8 runs) Bangladesh 381/8
Shafiul Islam    47* (44b 10x4)      JC Tredwell    30-5-93-2
Naeem Islam    44* (134b 5x4)      TT Bresnan    15-5-44-1

106.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, Bresnan still keeping it tight, zoning in on off stump and defended by Naeem

106.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, just outside off, and left alone

106.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, outside off and left alone again

106.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, rare lapse of concentration from Bresnan as he sprays the ball wide down the leg side. But a diving Matt Prior cuts it off

106.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, on a length on off stump and Naeem stands up tall to ride the bounce and drop the ball down defensively at his feet

106.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run

End of over 107 (maiden) Bangladesh 381/8
Naeem Islam    44* (140b 5x4)      TT Bresnan    16-6-44-1
Shafiul Islam    47* (44b 10x4)      JC Tredwell    30-5-93-2

107.1

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, tossed up and the batsman lunges out to defend

107.2

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, the length is pulled back just a touch and defended off the back foot

107.3

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, FOUR, there's the half century! Take a bow Shafiul Islam! The ball was tossed up on off stump and it was slammed up and over the covers, racing away for four. Excellent innings, all the more so from a No. 10 batsman

107.4

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, pressing forward to defend

107.5

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, 2 runs, deft touch from Shafiul, he steps back to run the ball off the face of the bat down to third man

107.6

Tredwell to Shafiul Islam, no run, full and Shafiul lunges out to smother the spin and defend

End of over 108 (6 runs) Bangladesh 387/8
Shafiul Islam    53* (50b 11x4)      JC Tredwell    31-5-99-2
Naeem Islam    44* (140b 5x4)      TT Bresnan    16-6-44-1

108.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, 1 run, just short of a good length, and enough width for Naeem to guide the ball down to the right of third man

108.2

Bresnan to Shafiul Islam, OUT, and Shafiul's cameo comes to an end. Bresnan fired the ball slightly wider of off and Shafiul threw his bat out at it without moving his feet an inch. The ball took a healthy edge, and though it died on its way through to Prior, he did well to dive forward and to his right to snaffle the catch. And so ends a good innings from Shafiul, which took Bangladesh within touching distance of 400

Shafiul Islam c †Prior b Bresnan 53 (76m 51b 11x4 0x6) SR: 103.92

108.3

Bresnan to Rubel Hossain, no run, and some spice immediately from Bresnan. A rising ball on off stump is fished at, and missed

108.4

Bresnan to Rubel Hossain, no run, too wide this time, and left alone by the batsman

108.5

Bresnan to Rubel Hossain, no run, length on off stump, and pushed into the covers

108.6

Bresnan to Rubel Hossain, no run, full and at the stumps, Rubel jams the bat down to send the ball to mid on

End of over 109 (1 run) Bangladesh 388/9
Rubel Hossain    0* (4b)      TT Bresnan    17-6-45-2
Naeem Islam    45* (141b 5x4)      JC Tredwell    31-5-99-2

Steven Finn comes in to the attack as England look to finish off the innings. How will Naeem respond?

109.1

Finn to Naeem Islam, no run, he starts with a solid forward defensive. Patient, so far

109.2

Finn to Naeem Islam, no run, full and a foot outside off stump, Naeem drives the ball square to the deep point fielder, but turns down the run

109.3

Finn to Naeem Islam, no run, aimed at middle and leg, and Naeem shuffles across and tucks the ball defensively to leg

109.4

Finn to Naeem Islam, 1 run, Finn fires in the yorker just wide of off, and Naeem digs it out. He's done well to pick up a run there, just running the ball off the face down to third man

109.5

Finn to Rubel Hossain, FOUR, full and Rubel gets half forward to defend. The ball took a thick edge but found the gap between the slips and the gully and, with no third man in place, down to the boundary

109.6

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, good ball from Finn, just outside off and Rubel has a little fiddle at it. Lucky not to get the edge there

And, as the players take drinks, I'll be handing the commentary over to Sahil.

End of over 110 (5 runs) Bangladesh 393/9
Rubel Hossain    4* (6b 1x4)      ST Finn    8-2-49-1
Naeem Islam    46* (145b 5x4)      TT Bresnan    17-6-45-2

Thanks Liam. The first hour has belonged almost entirely to Bangladesh, fantastic stuff from them, less so from England. Can Naeem push the score beyond 400?

110.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, Bresnan continues to wobble the ball around the off stump, he has bowled tidily all tour, Naeem leaves alone

110.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, this is a fraction further outside off stump, Naeem happily bides his time, leaving alone

110.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, Bresnan quickly adjusts his line, honing in on off stump, Naeem not looking for anything expansive early in the over, just blocks

110.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, slightly fuller, Naeem rocks forwards and defends once more

110.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, FOUR, someone with a laptop in the England dressing room should do a fancy calculation to work out how many runs have gone through third man. Or they could trust their eyes. Whatever really. Naeem angles this through to the third man region to bring up an excellent fifty, really fighting hard

110.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, sees out the over with a resolute defence and Rubel will have strike next over

End of over 111 (4 runs) Bangladesh 397/9
Naeem Islam    50* (151b 6x4)      TT Bresnan    18-6-49-2
Rubel Hossain    4* (6b 1x4)      ST Finn    8-2-49-1

111.1

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, Rubel is nothing if not in control here, standing tall, offering the straightest of bats

111.2

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, another broad-batted defensive shot from Rubel, given his lowly average, he must be in the form of his life judging by this

111.3

Finn to Rubel Hossain, FOUR, wonderful batting from Rubel, looking every bit a top-order batsman, leaning gently into the ball and check-driving through the covers for four to bring up the 400

111.4

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, strides into a forward defence with confidence

"That's the best tailend cover-drive I've seen since Hoggy at Trent Bridge in 2005", chirps Miller. Fair point.

111.5

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, good sharp ball from Finn, finds some bounce which follows Rubel. Finn then chunters a few words, Rubel's disinterest is quite enjoyable

111.6

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, flicked through into the midwicket region, they decide against the single

End of over 112 (4 runs) Bangladesh 401/9
Rubel Hossain    8* (12b 2x4)      ST Finn    9-2-53-1
Naeem Islam    50* (151b 6x4)      TT Bresnan    18-6-49-2

112.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, amusingly Tim Bresnan has a desperate sounding, elongated appeal, like a man falling down a long slide without wanting to. Or something. It was a bouncer, by the way, which Naeem ducked under

112.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, full toss pushed out into the off side, but the real story here is that a third man has been placed!

112.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, outside off stump, Naeem has better things to do than play at it, like leave

112.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, well if anything could exemplify the slowness of the pitch it was this, dug in short, Naeem thought about ducking, then thought about swaying, then decided, after another pause to pull it down towards fine leg without getting it away, he probably had time for three other shots in between

112.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, once again blocked comfortably

112.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, FOUR, well, having finally decided to post a third man, there was a rather cunning plan to remove it, Naeem duly angled it away for four straight where the man would/should have been. Top stuff from him

End of over 113 (4 runs) Bangladesh 405/9
Naeem Islam    54* (157b 7x4)      TT Bresnan    19-6-53-2
Rubel Hossain    8* (12b 2x4)      ST Finn    9-2-53-1

113.1

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, good short ball again, Finn in one of his set-English-hearts-fluttering-with-extra-bounce moods it seems, Rubel sways out of the way hurriedly

113.2

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, another good sharp short ball, Finn finding life in this desperately poor, slow pitch, Rubel again hurries out the way

113.3

Finn to Rubel Hossain, FOUR, Finn pitches it up and is met by the correct full blade of Rubel, check-driving with authority back down the ground for four. Really good shot

113.4

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, you can forgive a No. 11 for things like this, just fencing the bat at a fullish ball outside off stump, he missed it of course, it's been that kind of morning

113.5

Finn to Rubel Hossain, no run, more solidly behind this one, no fuss, just a full face of the bat

113.6

Finn to Rubel Hossain, FOUR, brilliant, there is nothing quite as irking as a final wicket partnership, especially when runs come like this, genuine edge, between slip and a gully at catchable height, goes through to that boundary

End of over 114 (8 runs) Bangladesh 413/9
Rubel Hossain    16* (18b 4x4)      ST Finn    10-2-61-1
Naeem Islam    54* (157b 7x4)      TT Bresnan    19-6-53-2

114.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, fuller and slightly angled down leg side, tickled round the corner to fine leg but they reject the single

114.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, this time it's outside off stump, Naeem leaves alone

114.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, I'm not quite sure how you'd get Naeem out here, he'll probably have to gift his wicket, but he's in no mood to right now, defending resolutely instead

114.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, defended again firmly into the covers

114.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, FOUR, with two balls left, Cook adjusts the field, removing the third man, Naeem is thinking a little quicker, or at least the edge of his bat is, so it flies along the ground straight to where the fielder should have been again for another boundary

114.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, easily blocked away to end the over

Bangladesh's No. 10 and 11 have both made more runs in this innings than in their previous Test career. (And No. 4 equalled his previous...)

End of over 115 (4 runs) Bangladesh 417/9
Naeem Islam    58* (163b 8x4)      TT Bresnan    20-6-57-2
Rubel Hossain    16* (18b 4x4)      ST Finn    10-2-61-1

Here comes Graeme Swann

115.1

Swann to Rubel Hossain, no run, Rubel defends nonchalantly into the off side

115.2

Swann to Rubel Hossain, 1 run, quite a nice shot this, flicked from outside off stump through the midwicket region for an easy single

115.3

Swann to Naeem Islam, no run, Naeem defends this very easily off the back foot

115.4

Swann to Naeem Islam, no run, slightly fuller, very slow turn, Naeem defends

115.5

Swann to Naeem Islam, 1 run, milked, rarely have Test runs been as easy, tapped down to long on for one

115.6

Swann to Rubel Hossain, no run, Rubel continues his good work, defending well, Swann looks to the heavens, and mutters words which would probably send him to hell

End of over 116 (2 runs) Bangladesh 419/9
Rubel Hossain    17* (21b 4x4)      GP Swann    36-5-114-3
Naeem Islam    59* (166b 8x4)      TT Bresnan    20-6-57-2

116.1

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, if Bresnan was taller he would be a real handful, he rarely errs from the off stump line, Naeem is forced into a tight defence

116.2

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, once again probing the off-stump channel, Naeem is solidly behind it

116.3

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, drags his length back a fraction, but the line remains impeccable, Naeem is equal to it all, defending well

116.4

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, Naeem defends off the front foot well again, is he waiting for another third-man trick shot?

116.5

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, Bresnan giving no room to work with, and Naeem giving nothing away either

116.6

Bresnan to Naeem Islam, no run, completes an excellent maiden over with a rising ball outside off that Naeem defends

End of over 117 (maiden) Bangladesh 419/9
Naeem Islam    59* (172b 8x4)      TT Bresnan    21-7-57-2
Rubel Hossain    17* (21b 4x4)      GP Swann    36-5-114-3

Having just mentioned heaven and hell, here is Rev. Dr. Arthur Caldwell to ask and answer his own question. "Can we safely say now that Cook should never become a permanent English captain? I should think so. It seems to me that every time a young batsman comes into the national team he's bestowed with the informal title of "future English captain" simply because of his age rather than any credentials he may have."

117.1

Swann to Rubel Hossain, OUT, gone this time, Swann has the breakthrough! Rubel prodded forward and feathered an edge through to Prior, who made no mistake.

Rubel Hossain c †Prior b Swann 17 (40m 22b 4x4 0x6) SR: 77.27

Innings break. A terrific morning for Bangladesh, Naeem and Shafiul played excellently and even Rubel struck gold with a few shots. On an easy-paced pitch with some even gentler field settings they were put under no pressure at all, stroking 89 in no time, 45 of which, I'm told, went through third man. You can check that out on our swish Hawk-Eye feature, by the way.

There are a lot of emails varying on the "Cook has been cooked" and "Tiger's tail wagging" theme coming through. So rather than talk any more about them I should mention the players are back out there and Alastair Cook and new opener Jonathan Trott will face a gleeful Shafiul and Rubel
