Again the umpires take down another reading from the light meter. Harper and Doctrove have a lengthy chat, offer the light to the batsmen who accept it and walk off the field. That's that. End of day 1. Only Wasim Jaffer missed out, shouldering arms to a delivery that cut back in. All the rest feasted on a placid track and India have ended up a healthy 295 for 3.

We will have an early start tomorrow. 18 minutes early. 9.42 local time which is 9.12 IST. Catch you then.

End of over 77 (9 runs) India 295/3
SC Ganguly    82* (132b 10x4 2x6)      Rajin Saleh    3-1-12-0
SR Tendulkar    80* (137b 7x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    13-2-29-0

4.29 pm The umpires are walking out. And now the fielders and the batsmen troop out as well. Super. Let's see whether the light holds out and we get 23 overs of play.

Another interesting news that came out today was that Bashar said his decision to continue playing one-day cricket was prompted by Sourav Ganguly. Click here to read more.

Suneer: "It would be interesting to see Sachin and Saurav's approach today, especially given that only 23 overs have to be bowled, and both are approaching their tons. I expect a run rate of not more than 3.5 till they reach their centuries"

Indeed, it would be very interesting. btw they need two more runs to establish the fourth wicket record against Bangladesh. The previous best is 164 between themselves at Dhaka in 2004-05. Bangladesh have a very good opportunity to put the two under pressure and try for a breakthrough.

4.00 pm Umpire Harper: "Inshallah, If there is no further rain, the game will start at 4.30 pm. We will have 23 overs of play today." Interestingly, just before the umpires went out there, the groundstaff were panicking, says Sidharth Monga, our man at the ground. They were getting ready with covers, anticipating some rain but settled down. The sky cleared up and the umpires went in.

Jay Vyas: "Seeing the fight for places, Do you see a reasonable chance of Ishant Sharma playing, if not then how would you rate this move by the team management on the morale of new players?"

It would depend on how VRV Singh and RP Singh go in this Test. If one of them gets injured or bowl rubbish, then the young Ishant might get a chance.

Sky, from USA, reckons, "They should have covered the entire ground overnight with a tarpaulin sheet, so the outfield would not have been wet this morning. its absurd to delay a day's play by 5 hours!"

Madhu: "Hi there! I'm just wondering about the nature of the pitch going by two facts. Fast bowlers took all three wickets so far and India included three fast bowlers. Is the pitch really helping fast bowlers more than spinners? "

Now ... it's difficult to say. We have to wait and watch whether any moisture has seeped through the track and if it will be overcast. The three wickets that fell don't give much indication actually. Jaffer just shouldered arms to the first delivery. It was the new ball and was bound to have some movement. The second, Karthik, fell pulling from well outside off stump. Bad shot selection. Dravid was undone by some extra bounce. Ie more than what he anticipated. The experts reckon It will take some slow spin on day 4 and day 5. So we just have to wait and watch.

Rahat has been sitting at Chittagong stadium, looking at the mopping operations. All day long. "I am among the very few spectators still in the stadium. I am amazed with myself! How patient I have been the whole day! A wasted weekend... Any way thanks cricinfo for your heartbreaking updates. I am planning to leave now. I am logged in from my cell phone. "

If you think you know your cricket, try and crack the Cricinfo quiz. The May episode has just been launched.

3.05pm Arrgh. More bad news. There will be another inspection at 3.55 pm and they are looking at 4.30 pm local time! And I thought the umpires said this would be the final inspection. Apparently, some wet patches have not dried up yet. Hmm ... So wait till 3.55 pm. Twiddle the thumbs, crank up the music and er.... do some work.

Anuj is bored. So he sends me a mail asking, "When exactly did it stop raining?"

Hmm... Sometime between 8.15 and 8.30 am. There was some drizzle here and there. More here than there.

Rahul is getting impatient. "hi, is there any chance of a game today or is it rather being a optimist?"

Well... If there is no further rain - it has not come down for quite some time now, I think we will have play at 3.30 local time. The wicket is intact and the wet patches in the outfield are drying. There is one final inspection at 2.55 pm, we will definitely know then boss. So wait for a little while more.

Phil sends us this query: "I read that some bigwigs from the BCCI were arriving there today -glad they haven't had much to watch thus far. You reported Whatmore arranging a net-does that mean he has concluded his talks with the BCCi types?"

Well ... BCCI is being tightlipped about it. Niranjan Shah, the secretary, has just said, "The final decision will be known by the first or second week of June. The coach selection committee will meet in Bangalore on June 4 and within the next four-five days, things will be finalised." Shah denied that that the Board's top brass had come here to talk to outgoing Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore, but said he was open for a discussion if the Aussie so desired.

"If he wants to meet me, I am open to it. There is no problem." Shah, who is slated to return to India tomorrow, said the BCCI officials were here on an invitation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board and not to negotiate with Whatmore. "We have come here on an invitation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to watch the game. We had come here hoping to see Sourav (Ganguly) and Sachin (Tendulkar) score a century. We have not come here to talk to Whatmore."

BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla: " Yes there are a few names. The BCCI is approaching it with an open mind. However, considering the availability of the best coaches, Dav could be a frontrunner. Ravi Shastri is here to talk to him. Pawar will not speak to him."

2.10pm There will be another inspection, the final one, at 2.55 pm with the hope that the game will start at 3.30 pm local time. The sun is shining brightly and we will have game till 6.00 pm local time. The game will start 30 minutes early in the next three days.

The Indian players are out their doing the warm-up routine. Whatmore is also out in the sun, arranging a nets session.

12.48 pm local time The next pitch inspection will be at 2.00 pm local time.

12.40 pm The umpires are out there, inspecting the field. The sun is out and the covers are coming off. There were six layers of different coverings on the wicket. The wicket looks pretty good. There are some wet patches in the outfield. The sun is out in full splendour though. So, hopefully we can have game soon.

11.50 am The groundsmen are yet to hand over the ground to the umpires. The first inspection will take only after that. India's fielding coach Robin Singh, who inspected the ground along with bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad and administrative manager Surendra Bhave, said, "Even if play starts, it will not be not before 3 p.M. Local time (1430 IST)."

10.13 am It's highly unlikely that we would get any play in the first session. That's that. I am Sriram Veera and the break gives us an opportunity to rewind to the first day's play.

There were a few interesting passages of play yesterday. Rafique and the other left-arm spinners tried to get Rahul Dravid lbw by operating from round the stumps, bowling a lot of arm-balls, the one that comes in with the arm. Dravid, in the past, has got into trouble a few times by getting the left leg a touch too much across while defending on the front foot. Interestingly, here, Dravid adjusted by moving his left leg more straight down the track rather than across, choosing to stay adjacent to the line, and avoided getting the bat around the front pad.

Rafique then tried the same thing with Tendulkar. Again, Tendulkar took care not to get his left leg across but he was in trouble once when he survived a very close lbw shout and was lucky to survive.

Against Ganguly, the spinners started pitching it really full, again going for the lbw. They would bowl orthodox left-arm spin at him, turning in, off a length, from just outside off stump and then, suddenly, slip in a few really full ones. On a placid track that didn't offer much spin or bounce, the going was tough for the spinners.

9.30 am local time Hi there. Bad news. Rain delays start of play on second day.

Sidharth Monga, getting wet at the ground, sends us this: "Overnight drizzling and early-morning rain have made the first day's play difficult. It started raining at around 6am and went till about 8.15am. The outfield looks in a bad state, and the teams will come to the ground later in the day only.

The good news, though, is that the rain has stopped and the groundsmen have started working on the wicket. First of all, they will need to dry the covers, so that they can take them off the square. The outfield doesn't boast of the best drainage system and is also the slow-drying type because of the high clay content. Even inspections are not likely before noon.

Chance of play in the first session looks bleak, and if it rains again, the whole day's play may have to be called off. Where is the sun when we needed it?"

-------------- Some stats for your perusal. From HRG: " When Tendulkar crossed fifty, he scored his 79th fifty plus score {35 Centuries plus 44 Fifties} and is now on par with Gavaskar who has 79 fifties {34 C plus 45 F}. Others to score more fifties are AR Border 90 {27 C plus 63 F}, BC Lara 82 {34 C plus 48 F} and SR Waugh 82 {32 C plus 50 F}.

Tendulkar and Ganguly have added 163 runs so far. They need two more runs to establish the fourth wicket record against Bangladesh. The previous best is 164 between themselves at Dhaka in 2004-05. -----------

Righto, Shahahat 'Rajib' Hossain to start the proceedings..

9.57 am Right the umpires are walking out to the middle and we are moments away from the start, Kanishkaa Balachandran will take you through the start of play.

9.40am Sidharth says it's like sunny Alabama at the moment at Chittagong. I've never been to Alabama and I'm not sure he has either. But as long as the rain stays away and we're able to get play for best part of the last two days, there just might be a jot of interest left in this game.

I'd expect India to declare overnight and put Bangladesh in first thing in the morning. Sherlock Sidharth, however, says that the Indians haven't put on their kits, indicating perhaps that there's no declaration yet. No official word yet though.

"Problem with declaring overnight, is it might allow Bangladesh to get on top if they bat out the remaining 2 days. I guess India would just keep batting and make sure Bangladesh are totally worn out till next test and win the match and series," says Parthiv.

9.30am Sidharth Monga reports with positive news from Chittagong. "The game is expected to start at 10am local time [9.30 IST]. It hasn't really rained since last evening and there's just a light drizzle here and there. The umpires and the teams have inspected the conditions and have decided on 10am to make up for lost time."

Fourth day, 9.20am Good morning all, welcome to the fourth day's play of the first Test between Bangladesh and India. Sriram Veera's taking a break today and I, George Binoy, will bring you news of rain, sun and cricket at Chittagong.

11.15 am: Play has been called off. The fourth day's play will start, weather permitting, 30 minutes early at 9.30 am local time tomorrow. Hopefully Cyclone Akash would have relented by then. That's it for now. Catch you tomorrow. Pray for some sunshine.

Hi there. Bad news. Rain delays start. Heavy rain since dawn waterlogged the Ruhul Amin Stadium, where poor drainage facilities will make the ground staff's task tougher even if the weather improves. There are several puddles of water around the outfield. It is still raining out there. That's that. The umpires will have a look at around 11.30ish and reassess the situation. The cyclone Akash has played havoc with the game.

Yesterday, the sun came out smiling after rain stopped around 8.30 am. Still we didn't get play underway till the evening. So I wonder whether we will have any play at all today.

I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you all the live rain reports today. While we wait, lets have a look at what the papers are saying.

Paper round-up The Kolkata-based daily Telegraph is running a rather interesting item. Gossip. Ah! I see you getting really interested. "Somebody known to The Telegraph called Dav Whatmore around 7 pm on Saturday at the Peninsula Hotel. Without waiting for the caller to speak, Bangladesh's outgoing coach chirpily said "hello Niranjan..." He'd assumed the caller was Niranjan Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary!" Whatmore quickly recovered, but let the proverbial cat out of the bag, strongly indicating that a line of communication had been established between him and the BCCI."

The Dhaka-based daily The Daily Star is also running a story on Dav Whatmore, titled 'Dav drawing whose attention?'

The poor drainage facilities have come under the scanner. New Age, another Bangladesh daily, has the story. "The BCB officials, however, blamed the water level under the ground for taking so much time to make it playable. 'You all know, the ground is very close to the sea. Naturally, the water level here is higher than the other grounds of the country. It took some time to dry up the field,' said Rafiqul Islam, the chairman of the BCB ground and facilities committee."

Are you wondering what the Indians are eating in Bangladesh? Take a deep breath and sigh in relief. PTI serves us the scoop. Apparently, Anil Kumble is so bowled over by by the taste of wood apple sherbet that he has asked the Chef the recipe. Hmm ... Moila fish, a local delicacy was also a hit with the Indians. Interesting times we live in eh, digging up hotel kitchens. Wonder what Bradman ate on tour. Apart from the bowlers ie.

Elsewhere, IANS screams that Bangladesh is a banana country. Lower your eyebrows, it's the fruit that they are talking about. " It is a big business as bananas are grown in large quantities in this country, with Narshinghdi district near Dhaka being the hub. "Banana is available throughout the year. It is mostly eaten for breakfast and students pack them in their tiffins to school. We also import bananas from Nepal, but the Bangladeshi variety tastes much better," said Noman Mohammad." Yummy!

Bangladesh have set out what they planned to do, getting early wickets and forcing a decleration. Time was always going to be factor and we can't say yet if India have enough of it to bowl Bangladesh out twice, weather permitting too of course. The wicket is still a belter and Bangladesh should help themselves to a few runs.

No sign of Kumble yet on the field as the Indians come out. We will keep you updated as and when we receive word.

The openers are coming out, Javed Omar and Shahriar Nafees. Three slips and a gully. Zaheer Khan to open for India. Here we go
