India in Bangladesh Test Series - 1st Test

Bangladesh v India

India won by 113 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

83 overs will be bowled today, hopefully! Lunch will be taken at 12.00 pm local. The break will be for 30 minutes, next two sessions will be 2 hours each, light permitting.

Shafiul will open.

Shafiul Islam gets his Test cap. The huddle breaks away. By the way, there's no UDRS for this series. That's the Umpire Decision Review System.

Toss: Shakib Al Hasan has won the toss and Bangladesh will bowl. Expected decision. Sehwag says it's a good track to bat on. Sreesanth, Ishant, Zaheer and Mishra form the bowling attack.

For Bangladesh, Shahadat Hossain and Shahriar Nafees are playing. We'll have the full team up soon. Shafiul Islam will be making his debut.

I've been told that the weather has cleared up and a it's a nice, chill, charming wintery day.

10.32am: Good news. The toss is at 10.40 local time. Play will start at 11.

10.30am: It's inspection time and I'm waiting for some info. Stay on.

10.12am: The umpires will have an inspection at 10.30 am local time (10.00 am IST) , which is about 20 minutes from now.

Sethuraman: "Since we are playing only two Test matches against Bangladesh with no excellent track record against India, we should have given a chance to youngsters such as Rahane, Manish Pandey, Pujara, Kholi, and Raina to make a mark in Test cricket. A balance between seasoned players and youngsters would have been ideal to groom newer players. Are we waiting for the young players to be past 35 years before they get a chance?"

Karthikeya: "@Arun: Yuvraj Singh's scores in India's last three Test series - vs England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka (the last 12 months) - 14, 85*, 27, 86, 22, 0, 54*, 9, 40, 68, 67, 23. That's 495 runs at 49.5 batting at number 6 in a strong batting line up. What would you like him to do to cement his place in the side?" Fair point.

9.51am: Here's another bit of news. Harbhajan Singh has been ruled out due to a stiff neck. India are playing three seamers and a spinner, Amit Mishra.

Just a clarification. Don't be confused by the names in blue above. It's only the squad list and not the final playing XI. The XI will be updated only after the toss. Dhoni and Harbhajan aren't playing and that's confirmed.

Raghav: "@Dharmaraj: I agree that Subramaniam Badrinath and the likes are never given a look, but same was the case with KKD some time back. Remember the amount of chances Yuvraj got in tests (when he started), and Rohit Sharma got in ODIs. Its good to give KKD a few chances even as a specialist- afterall he will always be the uncomplaining "filler" for someone."

Arun: "Why should Yuvraj always be a first choice in Tests?. His test form is erratic & inconsistent to say the truth. He has not yet cemented his place in team with performance ,but only in the team of his reputation. We could try some youngster like Vijay in his place in this series."

9.43am: While we wait, let's take a look at some of the mails.

Dharmaraj: "It's always good to have reliable keeper-batsmen like Karthik (and we have a few others as well) to replace Dhoni in an emergency. Still the selectors should not use this as an excuse to retain Karthik in the squad and play him as a batsman even after Dhoni returns. Playing Dinesh as a specialist batsman is a gross injustice to specialist batsmen who tower over him in talent and performance (even his TN team mates like Badrinath, Vijay, Mukund, or even his namesake Arun Karthik)."

Shakil says I jumped the gun with my comment on playing Tests at this time of the year. He says: "This is the best time for cricket in Bangladesh - not in summer or monsoon."

9.32am: Some bits coming in from the ground. The covers are off. There's an inspection on. A fat wet roller is being wiped with a dry cloth. Bangladesh are practicing next to the center pitch. And the Indians are practicing in the nets. The pitch is being swept clean now. Stumps are being put in.

Good signs there. An official word is awaited.

Well Sriram is on his first tour of the country and on one of his days off, made the effort to meet Mohammad Rafique, probably the best spinner the country has produced. In case you missed this story which came out about a week ago, read it now. Highly recommended and quite a fascinating story of a man who rose from poverty.

9.10am: Still no official word on the toss. The weather has cleared up very marginally, the pitch is still covered and it's very cold out there. First the dew in the one-dayers, now the fog. Much excitement in store folks. Begs the question whether we should be playing Tests at all in Bangladesh at this time of the year.

In the meantime you can read Ian Chappell's opinion on the UDRS and Pakistan's erratic performances in Australia.

8.55 am: We have some bad news. There will be a delayed start because of fog and dew. We said earlier that it was overcast. The extent of the delay is not known. The umpires and match referee will carry out an inspection, hopefully soon. There will be a delayed toss.

I remember fog was quite an issue last year at this time in Bangladesh. The tri-series was being played.

8.45am: Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chittagong. The toss is about 15 minutes away. The news from yesterday is that MS Dhon is sitting out with a back spasm and Sehwag will lead. The one certain change is Karthik for Dhoni.

Just seeing some pictures from the ground, it looks quite overcast. Sreesanth has his woolens on. That tells you a bit about the weather.

Sehwag fired his pre-series salvo yesterday saying that "Bangladesh are an ordinary side." As Sriram Veera put it, Sehwag talks just the way he bats - see the ball and whack. Simple as that.

12.6

Mahmudullah to Gambhir, no run, tossed up outside off and defended with a dead bat

12.00pm: India end on a strong note at 63 for no loss. The ball is stopping a bit on the batsman. We saw quite a few inside edges and hurried shots, especially from Sehwag. Not the most convincing start for him but he's got his eye in. Expect spin straight after lunch because Shakib got some turn and bounce in his first over.

Here are the revised playing times - (local time): 11.00 start, Lunch 12.00-12.40, Tea 15.10-15.30, Close 17.30

So join us at 12.40 pm for the second session.

Kunal: "I got a very basic doubt about test rules. Why is it that the lunch is still taken at the pre-decided time even if the play started 1 hour late in the morning due to bad light/rain etc. Shouldn't the session go on for 2 hours specially in situations where there is possibility of more rain/bad light in the afternoon and hence worthwhile to get as much play possible now?"

End of over 13 (2 runs) India 63/0
G Gambhir    22* (40b 3x4)      Mahmudullah    1-0-2-0
V Sehwag    38* (41b 6x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-4-0

Welcome back. Sehwag and Gambhir walk out. Shahadat runs in.

13.1

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, FOUR, short and wide, he arches up and steers the loose ball intentionally over the slips for four

13.2

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, no run, nothing shot this time, just flashes at a length ball without any footwork and misses out

13.3

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, FOUR, fuller ball on the stumps and he eases it past midwicket, beating Mahmudullah who runs from deep square leg and cannot stop it

13.4

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, FOUR, short of a length and he just cracks that between backward point and the slips to raise his half-century off 45 balls, a record for India versus Bangladesh

13.5

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, no run, back of a length on off stump, 129ks, defended off the back foot

13.6

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, 1 wide, terrible ball, three miles outside off stump as he searches for pace

"It is not easy to bowl a wide in Test cricket," says Gavaskar on air. Hear, hear.

13.6

Shahadat Hossain to Sehwag, 2 runs, see ball, will hit. Simple philosophy for Sehwag, who clobbers a fuller ball past extra cover and gets two as the sweeper does very well in the deep so haul it in

Neat little over after lunch, eh?

End of over 14 (15 runs) India 78/0
V Sehwag    52* (47b 9x4)      Shahadat Hossain    2-0-20-0

V Sehwag c Tamim Iqbal b Shakib Al Hasan 52 (70m 51b 9x4 0x6) SR: 101.96

A nothing dismissal. Just chipped the ball to the catcher. Could not contain himself. Bangladesh are ecstatic. Shakib got the ball to turn a bit. Smart field placing from him too. In walks Dravid.

End of over 15 (1 run) India 79/1

G Gambhir    23* (42b 3x4)      Shahadat Hossain    2-0-20-0

15.1

Shahadat Hossain to Gambhir, no run, hits a good length outside off and Gambhir lets it go

15.2

Shahadat Hossain to Gambhir, OUT, edged and taken! Gambhir gets sucked in by one that pitches short of a length and sits up more than anticipated, but truth be told he had no business chasing it and ends up snicking a rising catch to the wicketkeeper, cuing wild celebrations from Bangladesh

G Gambhir c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Shahadat Hossain 23 (74m 44b 3x4 0x6) SR: 52.27

Big wicket from Shahadat. The openers are gone. That one just sat up and Gambhir chased it as it left him slightly. No need to flirt with that ball at all. Here's Tendulkar to join Dravid, who is yet to face a ball. Bangladesh are jubilant. Tendulkar takes his time to mark his guard and all that. Two slips wait.

15.3

Shahadat Hossain to Tendulkar, no run, good ball, pitches back of a length and deviates off the track, getting Tendulkar to play back and across

15.4

Shahadat Hossain to Tendulkar, no run, not a good ball to bowl to a new batsman, spears it down the pads

15.5

Shahadat Hossain to Tendulkar, no run, fuller ball, looks for movement, Tendulkar pushes to mid-on

15.6

R Dravid    0* (6b)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-1-5-1
SR Tendulkar    0* (4b)      Shahadat Hossain    3-1-20-1

Tendulkar takes his time to adjust ... come on.

Well, well well. India's top order has come apart. Each wicket was down to loose shots, no disrespect to the way Bangladesh have bowled though. Sehwag pushed a ball in the air, Gambhir chased one away from his body, and now Dravid played all over the ball as he tried to take it off his stumps. Whatever it is, Bangladesh are all over India. Three wickets in no time. Real test for the visitors. Test cricket is the best.
