South Africa tour of Bangladesh, 2007/08 / Commentary

South Africa in Bangladesh ODI Series - 1st ODI

Bangladesh v South Africa

South Africa won by 9 wickets (with 79 balls remaining)

Pitch: No grass. Slightly dry and it could slower as the day progresses, is the verdict of the experts on the pitch. South Africa have gone with two spinners, Harris and Botha.

Toss Mohammad Ashraful has chosen to bat. "We have to bat well. We have three debutant players, if we can bat well in the first hour, we can do well."

Smith I would love to restrict them to 200 but the pitch and outfield looks good. So I just want our bowlers to bowl well.

0.1

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, no run, right on target; in the zone outside off stump and moves away, Tamim shoulders arms

0.2

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, Fab shot to get off the mark. It was a on a length, a tad fuller perhaps, and outside off stump, Tamim leaned across and just knifed on the up and through extra cover. That's the way he plays his game.

0.3

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, no run, hits the deck on the leg stump line, and it straightens to thud in to the thigh pad

0.4

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, no run, Tamim is stronger on the off as compared to leg and again Nel cramps him with a delivery on the pads and it strikes the thigh pad again. Nel gives one long stare at the batsman

0.5

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, again on the hips and Tamim is a touch unsure but manages to push it away in front of square leg

0.6

Nel to Junaid Siddique, no run, lands on the middle and leg, moves towards middle and is turned to the on side.

End of over 1 (5 runs) Bangladesh 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

1.1

Langeveldt to Tamim Iqbal, no run, around the off stump and Tamim tries to drive on the up but gets a inside edge on to the pad

I am Sriram Veera and will bring you all the action today.

Langeveldt to Tamim Iqbal, no run, length delivery, around the off stump and Tamim inside-edges another intended on-the-up drive

1.4

Langeveldt to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, streaky boundary to the fine-leg region. A length delivery that came in and Tamim gets another inside-edge as he tries to drive through extra cover. Lucky escape, the ball rushed past the leg stump

1.5

Langeveldt to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, Width outside off and Tamim slays it through extra cover. In style.

1.6

2.2

Nel to Junaid Siddique, no run, full and outside off stump, leans forward to push it to mid-off

2.3

Nel to Junaid Siddique, no run, loud shout for lbw. Nel can't believe its not been given. Close call. Enamel Haque, the umpire who was a former cricketer himself, was not convinced. Full in length, on the middle and moving towards middle and off, he was on the front foot and was struck in line. Close.

2.4

Nel to Junaid Siddique, no run

2.5

Langeveldt to Junaid Siddique, no run, pushed across Siddique and the keeper de Villiers gathers.

3.5

Langeveldt to Junaid Siddique, 1 run, the inswinger (to the left-hander) is troubling the batsman. Fullish, and he shut the face of the bat early and got a leading edge, in the air, but luckily, for him it went over the short cover fielder and landed safely. He is off the mark. Finally.

3.6

Langeveldt to Tamim Iqbal, no run, Full and outside off, swing and a miss

End of over 4 (2 runs) Bangladesh 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
Tamim Iqbal    15* (14b 3x4)      CK Langeveldt    2-0-11-0

Nel to Tamim Iqbal, 1 run, and again but this time driven to left of mid-off

6.3

Nel to Junaid Siddique, no run, on the leg and middle, tries to whip it to midwicket but the ball rolls towards square leg. As the tv replays show, he invariably gets his bat down from the leg stump. Ie He picks up the bat and it comes down in an angle from the leg stump towards the off. So he is good on the off but to play on the leg side, he has to then turn that bat angle and hence is ineffective.

Safi, from Bangladesh, is very disappointed with his team. "As a Bangladeshi fan, I am ashamed of Bangladeshi team's performance. I don't think BD team is good learner of the game. They simply never learn nor improve. As a poor country, we put lot of money into the game but no improvement. No one in the team is consistent. I really feel they should play with tier-2 or 3 team. The Test status should be taken away. They lose almost all of the game by an inning. It's humiliating."

Ade Khan: "Bangladesh is a team that has been wounded by numerous defeats from nearly all teams. But, their wounds always seem to heal, and when they do, even if it is for a very limited amount of time, they are as good, if not better than some of the top nations in the world. We have seen this in may instances, with the likes of Pakistan, Australia, India and even South Africa having felt this (rewind back to the 2007 World Cup). "

21.2

Botha to Shakib Al Hasan, 2 runs, on the middle and leg, paddled away to fine leg

21.3

Botha to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, leans forward to defend

Farhan Anwar: "I am a Bangladeshi and I am a true cricket fan, Bangladesh shouldn't be allowed to play test cricket, it demeans test cricket by the way Bangladesh has been performing. We have heard for many years that with age and experience they will improve, 50 + tests and numerous innings defeats, all done usually by 3rd day? Bangladesh should indeed be playing 1st class teams. That way they can get to learn the basics of the game. no one gets to learn when they are being pulverised, they are too busy defending to learn."

So there are serious issues the Bangladeshi side have to address if they are to compete in International cricket... and batsmen of his class with an average of 22 in ODI cricket and 30 in First-Class? 46.4

Nel to Abdur Razzak, no run, slower one, swing and a miss

46.5

Nel to Abdur Razzak, OUT, low full toss, swiped low to covers where Smith takes it. The batsman thinks it might have bounced, the two umpires confer and he is given out. They don't refer it to third umpire. Smith claimed the catch. Replays don't confirm or deny it. Akhtar Ali Khan, on air, believes it bounced. I will wait for another replay to confirm his doubt.

46.6

Nel to Shahadat Hossain, OUT, yorker fetches him another wicket. It crashed into the front boot in front of leg and middle. The umpire Enamul reckons it would have clipped the leg. Hmm..

As for the Smith catch, I am still not sure of passing a verdict based on the replays.
