Full Name

Charles James Barnett

Born

October 31, 1796

Died

December 31, 1882, Brighton, Sussex, (aged 86y 61d)

Charles Barnett was 28 when he became president of MCC in 1825 and, like his four predecessors, was a truly poor cricketer. Proving it was more about contacts than skill, a career average of 5.16 with the bat did not stop him playing four times in the top match between Gentlemen and Players. His tenure as president was marked by the fire which destroyed the original pavilion and, with it, all the early MCC records. He was a Liberal MP between 1830 and 1835, and latterly Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire.
