Sydney Sixers, the reigning Champions League and Big Bash League trophy holders, have bolstered their squad for this summer by signing the Pakistani batsman Umar Akmal.

Like his national team-mate Shahid Afridi at Sydney Thunder, Akmal will be available for the Sixers' first three BBL matches, offering the kind of aggressive batting he has exhibited for Pakistan since his debut as a 19-year-old in 2009.

"I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the Big Bash League when the Sixers approached me," Akmal said.

"I'm looking forward to spending December in Australia and will be aiming to assist them to go back to back and win the tournament again."

The Sixers have also signed the New South Wales rookie-contracted batsman Daniel Hughes, an opening batsman for the North Sydney grade club.

Hughes can be expected to slot into the Sixers' top order once David Warner departs for his expected national duty.

umar akmal ix my most fvrt batsman... he is great & talented player. hope he can perform well in the big bash league and slap all of those who always trying to make him down. No one is there to give him some confidence and to boost up his talen. I hope that in SS he will be given full opurtunity and learn many much more things under the experience of different talent cricketers of the world.

@cisco420 How do you know for certain he can't play at 3 or 4?

Who was the one that took Pak home against SA and rebuilt the innings, plus was the last batsmen against SL in the T20 WC?

Also, Afridi had no choice but to play him down the order because he had Misbah and Younis in the side, even though he wanted more youngsters in the team but the selectors did not oblige.

Lastly, Umar has a much better FC record than both Azhar and Shafiq!!

  • cisco420 on November 6, 2012, 20:22 GMT

@Stark62 , Why blame Misbah, even Hafeez and Afridi played him down the order. Umer is a hitter and is suited for few balls only. He can't be sent one down and asked to build a innings. Pakistani captains and coaching staff understands that and thats the reason he is not even in our Test squad.
