Sydney Sixers, the reigning Champions League and Big Bash League trophy holders, have bolstered their squad for this summer by signing the Pakistani batsman Umar Akmal.

Like his national team-mate Shahid Afridi at Sydney Thunder, Akmal will be available for the Sixers' first three BBL matches, offering the kind of aggressive batting he has exhibited for Pakistan since his debut as a 19-year-old in 2009.

"I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the Big Bash League when the Sixers approached me," Akmal said.

"I'm looking forward to spending December in Australia and will be aiming to assist them to go back to back and win the tournament again."

The Sixers have also signed the New South Wales rookie-contracted batsman Daniel Hughes, an opening batsman for the North Sydney grade club.

Hughes can be expected to slot into the Sixers' top order once David Warner departs for his expected national duty.

@TabiXh Umar Akmal is not capable of scoring runs even against the women's teams LOL.

umar akmal ix my most fvrt batsman... he is great & talented player. hope he can perform well in the big bash league and slap all of those who always trying to make him down. No one is there to give him some confidence and to boost up his talen. I hope that in SS he will be given full opurtunity and learn many much more things under the experience of different talent cricketers of the world.

The experience will do him a world of good.

Umar akmal is a consistent duck scorer....Waste of money for sydney sixers...

Best of luck umer i think he will be usefull in upcoming cl for ss.

@cisco420 How do you know for certain he can't play at 3 or 4?

Who was the one that took Pak home against SA and rebuilt the innings, plus was the last batsmen against SL in the T20 WC?

Also, Afridi had no choice but to play him down the order because he had Misbah and Younis in the side, even though he wanted more youngsters in the team but the selectors did not oblige.

Lastly, Umar has a much better FC record than both Azhar and Shafiq!!

Posted by cisco420 on (November 6, 2012, 20:22 GMT)

@Stark62 , Why blame Misbah, even Hafeez and Afridi played him down the order. Umer is a hitter and is suited for few balls only. He can't be sent one down and asked to build a innings. Pakistani captains and coaching staff understands that and thats the reason he is not even in our Test squad.

A very good chance for the young lad to learn, hope he gets the best out of this opportunity.

now a days umer akmal name top of the list in my favourite cricketer because i like his agressiveness nd hard hitting...

Nice to see Umar will get some good practice. Its hard to understand though why Fawad Alam is not a regular, he has proven himself at the top level. Hes a consistent performer and hes one of the very few Pakistani firstclass players to average above 50...hes averaging 57.00. Also i believe Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz have also shown great promise at the top level and deserve a chance.

sorry to say but another young talent ready to be waste by pakistan by playng plenty of 20-20 cricket over the different country. like afridi, azhar mahamood. he needs to focuss on returning and maintaining the place in test cricket rather than playing 20 20 for different team. he is very talented player and could be a big player for pakistan in test match, odi and t20 in future.

Great pick! May he will be the best batsman of that tournament but he will only play 3 matches :(

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 14:45 GMT)

Umar has his best T20 performances against Australia so that might have added to the sixers interest.

Umar has made a mark as a finisher of sorts. If the sixers stint ascends Umars fielding standards, it would be terrific.

they are planning for Champions league tournament i think next tournament is In India thats why they need a batsman familiar to subcontinent conditions

He is a batsman who has played from no.3 to no. 6 in T20s so he can provide great flexibility in the batting order, also a good fielder and a part time wicket keeper!

Posted by ozwriter on (November 6, 2012, 11:45 GMT)

great pick. he looks a class player.

Posted by zenboomerang on (November 6, 2012, 11:14 GMT)

This is great news - adds another Pakistan player whom are very well respected by the Oz public, even to the point of one player getting cult hero statis in Tassie for a number of years... Pity Akmal can't put in a full BBL season, but national duties are more important than domestic comps...

This guy deserves a bit recognition, considering he was the stand out performer with the bat for Pak and he batted @ no. 5 or 6 at times, therefore was usually left to rebuild the innings or had to bat with the tail.

Misbah is destroying Umar's talent by not letting him bat higher up the order (no. 3 or 4) and allowing him to nurture.

Posted by jonesy2 on (November 6, 2012, 10:30 GMT)

fine pakistani talent. sixers can afford to have overseas players.

Best of Luck to Umar and Sixers. He is my favorite player in current Pakistan team. Some time he can become too explosive to handle. But I would agree with "Meety" he needs couple of county season to tighten his technique.

Posted by   on (November 6, 2012, 8:30 GMT)

I am a big fan of Umar Amal. He's is by far the best current Pakistani batsman. I think he has been been under utilized by Pakistani cricket team. He should be batting at number 3 in all forms of cricket for Pakistan.

Lets see how he does in Big Bash !

Posted by gknabhnani on (November 6, 2012, 7:40 GMT)

oh that's reallly a great news umar akmal is my favourite and i want to see in the big bash league and also in the next year champions league

Posted by satish619chandar on (November 6, 2012, 6:16 GMT)

Good pick. He can be devastating on his day and can keep wickets when needed too. Sixers doesn't need keeper but he can be a big addition to the middle order.

Posted by MJPAD on (November 6, 2012, 6:12 GMT)

Is DAVE WARNER in Sydney Thunder or Sydney Sixers!!!!!!!

Posted by getsetgopk on (November 6, 2012, 6:10 GMT)

Meety: Agree, he NEEDS a full county season to sort his technique out especially in seaming and swinging conditions, talented no doubt but will disappoint you when most needed, one or two county seasons are a must for him at this stage, there will be plenty of time for T20 league cricket.

Posted by Mary_786 on (November 6, 2012, 6:06 GMT)

Afridi and Khawaja in the Thunder and Akmal in the sixers, sounds good.

A good Chance Young star!

Sydney sixers z my most favorite domestic side along lahore lions, purely bcoz of their 3 quicks plus lumb.INCLUSION OF UMAR HAVE MADE THS SIDE EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE N EXCITING IN front of me

Posted by Meety on (November 6, 2012, 1:58 GMT)

I like this bloke. I think he needs to do a County stint to tighten up his game. Should have over 10yrs of quality cricket ahead of him!

Posted by mdhedhi on (November 6, 2012, 1:23 GMT)

This is pretty exciting news as this is the only decent Akmal. Thanks Sydney Sixers, and good choice. BBL is definitely worth a watch now.
